The American Red Cross Lifeguarding course provides entry

The American Red Cross Lifeguarding course provides entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent
recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies, and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses
until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. This class is being offered in the Blended Learning Format. In this format some
of the classroom work is completed independently online by the student while the remainder of the course will take place at the Mount St.
Mary’s Knott ARCC.
Prerequisites
1. Must be at least 15 years old on or before the last day of class, which is Wednesday, may 20, 2015. Proof of age will be required.
Acceptable forms of identification include a driver’s license, state identification, birth certificate, or passport.
2. Swim 300 meters continuously, demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl,
breaststroke, or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not permitted.
3. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.
4. Complete the following timed event within one minute, 40 seconds.
a. Starting in the water, swim 20 meters.
b. Surface dive, feet or head-first, to a depth of 8 feet to retrieve a 10-lb. object.
c. Return to the surface and swim 20 meters on the back to return to the starting point. Both hands must be holding the object
and the face must stay at or near the surface.
Certification Requirements
Students must attend all class sessions, successfully perform all required skills, successfully complete three final skill scenarios, and pass the
two written exams with a minimum grade of 80 percent or better.

The online portion of the course: 7.5 hours
The on-site portion of the course: 19.5 hours
The total course time:
26 hours
The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training/First Aid/CPR/AED certification is valid for 2 years.

How to Register
1. Complete the class registration form and submit it to the Aquatic Coordinator, Beth Raub, with the appropriate course fee
before 5 p.m. on Friday, April 24, 2015.

Once your registration form and payment have been received, you will receive an email from Beth Raub with instructions
telling you how to complete your registration on the American Red Cross website to pay the $35 American Red Cross fee and access
the online portion of the course.
Course Preparation
1. The Lifeguard manuals, CPR masks, and a course syllabus will be distributed at the first class session and must be brought to every
class.

Class participants must bring a bathing suit and one or two towels to every class. Goggles are strongly recommended.
