C Y C L E 4 2 E D I T I O N 1 1 8 PAGE Roughly thirty-five lucky cadets accompanied our top YCA staff to the State Capitol Building in Jackson last week. Cadet Tarmon went on the trip, and she had some interesting details about her visit. “I went with some other cadets and even Colonel King accompanied us. They chose one cadet from each county (who had no citations) to go on this trip with us,” she replied. “The trip to the Capitol was unlike any trip you will ever go on in your life. The bus ride up to Jackson MS, was full of chatter and excitement, because we were going to meet the Senators and the 64th Governor himself, Phil Bryant.” “When we arrived at the Capitol Building, everyone got off the bus in an orderly fashion, and formed our ranks. When we were formed up, and at attention, our tour guide gave us a short briefing on what we were going to do, and see. Right off the bat, we were told about the building, and its architecture. “The beauty of the Capitol was breathtaking” she added. “We went through a metal detector, then we started our tour. We had to climb up 5 flights of stairs, pass through another metal detector, walk to the other side of the building. There we found ourselves in the Gallery of Senators. We sat while the Senators voted and spoke their parts. Next, the YCA’s Cadets were recognized, and the Senators came up to meet the cadets that represented his, or her district. We also visited the House of Representative and were recognized. State Representatives from various counties also met with us.” Next we were given a tour of the building itself, going to all floors and admiring the architecture. We marveled at designs engraved in the marble pillars, and stone lime walls. Finally we got a tour of the “Hall of Governors.” In this hall there was a portrait of every Governor the state of Mississippi has ever had. We were pointed towards a few portraits, and were told about them, and some of their history. Cadet Salas, who also attended said, “This trip has helped all of us learn a little more about our beautiful state, Mississippi.” “After that we went back to the front of the building to be present for the Governor’s speech for Mississippi Musicians Day.” We got to witness Governor Bryant declare March 17th, Mississippi Musicians Day and took some pictures with him,” Tarmon explained.” The governor gave a short speech on this new holiday for musicians in Mississippi, and introduced a few well known blues artists. After listening to a few songs, we took a few pictures with the Governor and artists, then we said our farewells. The beauty of the Capitol was breathtaking. There were so many colors, lights and historical symbols. We heard a variety of interesting music styles that I’m sure we all enjoyed. Tarmon added, “The trip was definitely something I will never forget. I guess this all goes to show that good behavior goes a long way.” Cadet Lawson Hotel Cadet Salas Charlie 3 C Y C L E 4 2 E D I T I O N 1 1 8 PAGE 4 C Y C L E 4 2 E D I T I O N 1 1 8 PAGE On Mar 10, 2015 Foxtrot started off the week with a basketball game against the Bravo Bulldogs. The Bulldogs, and Warriors had practiced profusely. I talked to some of Foxtrot’s players, and they said, “We are more than ready for the game!” The scores show the hard work of both teams. Foxtrot defeated Bravo, putting up 34 points to Bravo’s 24. The star players were Stewart, and Broger for Bravo, and Woodman, and Jefferson for Foxtrot. It was an exciting game, and we can’t wait for the next one! Cadet Ricks, Foxtrot 5 C Y C L E 4 2 E D I T I O N 1 1 8 PAGE 6 As we all know, pass has come and gone. It was nice going home, and spending time with our friends, and family. There’s nothing like home, as they say. I hope everyone had enough junk food and sweets over pass because it’ll be a while before we get it again. Now that we’re back, we need to be focused of the big picture. Our GED test is almost over, and college has already started. This is such a tremendous step in all of our lives. Who would have thought we would make it this far? Although we may get frustrated, and sometimes want to throw in the towel, remember we are here for a reason. Some of us don’t have a second chance to get an education. Not only is the YCA amazing for giving us the opportunity to get our education. But also it is a program that will get us farther in life, and maybe in ways we can’t imagine right now. I am proud to be here, and I hope everyone else is, as well. Remember to stay focused, and thank your cadre along with Col. King and Col. Hosey, without them, this wouldn’t be possible.
