ABOUT COLLEGE, COURSES & RULES
FOREWORD
It was the ardent zeal for advancement of women education that led to the establishment
of Maharajadhiraj Uday Chand Women’s College in Burdwan on July 28, 1955. The
college owes its establishment to the dedicated efforts of Late Santosh Kumar Bose,
an enthusiastic member of the town’s intelectual elite; the sincere co-operation of Dr.
Bidhan Chandra Roy, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, and to crown all, the
magnanimity of His Highness Uday Chand Mahatab, who offered a part of his royal
palace to be used as Women’s College. Later on, a portion of Anjuman Kachhari
attached to the palace was also gifted to the College. As a mark of gratitude the
institution has been named after the former Raja of Burdwan, Maharajadhiraj Uday
Chand Mahatab. During 2004-05 the College celebrated its Golden Jubilee, the glorious
50-year of its effort to spread the light of education among women. The Jubilee function
was inaugurated by Mr. Somnath Chattopadhyay, Hon’ble Speaker, Lok Sabha
(2004-09). In 2005 the college introduced PG course in English and came to be
recognized as constituent college of the University of Burdwan. The courses run acquired
great success in quality, regularity and performance with success rate above 80%. A
good number of our ex-students have been placed in different Government and Private
Institutions and earned honour for their alma mater. During the current year the college
has been celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of its establishment.
AFFILIATION
Ours is a Government Sponsored College, originally affiliated to C.U., subsequently
affiliated to the University of Burdwan. In order to accommodate the ever increasing
number of students, the Arts section has been extended to the Morning Shift since 1971.
In view of huge demand of students the College introduced P.G. Course in English in
2005. For smooth running of the PG Course the College takes the help of Faculty from
Burdwan University and also from different Colleges.

COLLEGE RULES :
1. The manners of a student must be correct in the College campus. She is expected to have
fellow feeling and due regards for teachers and staff alike.
2 She should not make noise in the library, the classrooms and the college office. Silence
should be maintained while moving through the corridors and the assembly hall.
3. Each student is to participate in and keep discipline in the various functions, meetings,
competitions, Students’ Union Election and such activities in the college.
4. No student will be allowed to get in or out of a class without the teacher’s permission.
5. Regular and attentive class attendance is compulsory. Without stipulated percentage of attendance no student will be permitted to take her Test Examination.
Absence from the Honours class for ten consecutive days without any intimation
to the College Authority will lead to dropping of the name of the student from the
attendance register.
6. Students should observe all examination-rules and abstain from adopting unfair means in
the examination hall.
7. College Identity Card should be collected from the College office at the time of Admission
and should be kept secure as proof of studentship.
8. The Academic Calendar is to be regularly filled up and got signed by a teacher every
month. Otherwise, attendance calculated by the seacher will be treated as final. Application
explaining reasons of absence is to be made as per proforma printed in the Academic
Calendar.
9. After the commencement of classes every student will have to regularly follow all
Notifications made by the Authority. Information of general nature like application
for Free Studentship, date for filling up Forms for University Enrolment, Registration and Examination is not individually communicated to the students.
10. Use of Mobile phone is strictly prohibited inside the classroom.The cell phone may be kept
in the silent mode to receive emergency phone calls.
11. Generally within two months of Admission, each student is required to fill up
Registration cum Enrolment Form. This is a must for every student and as the
University here gives a dateline, no student is generally allowed to fill up Registration cum Enrolment Form beyond date. If this Registration cum Enrolment
Form is not filled up on time, no student is recognized as a student by the
University and therefore, is not eligible to appear at the University Examination.
12. As Hindi and Music are non-taught subjects in the College, every student is required to
meet the General Section within a week of the commencement of classes for necessary
formalities - seeking permission from the University for Hindi Combination and forwarding
names to Padmaja Naidu College for Music Combination.
13. All regular students of the college must attend 75% of classes held during a
session. University rule will be applicable for having less than stipulated attendance.
14. Students must use College property (furniture, fan, light, water cooler, laboratory equipment
etc.) with care and caution. Any student found damaging college property will have to pay
compensation for the loss/damage.

15. Students are expected to go through college website (www.mucwcburdwan.org), Notice
Board & Digital Display Board regularly to update about any academic / administrative
schedule.
16. Science students must attend Theoretical as well as Practical classes regularly.
Students who bunk Theoretical classes may not be allowed to attend Practical
classes at all.
17. In case a student changes the SIM of her mobile phone, she will have to inform the college
authority in this regard.
COUNCIL & ASSOCIATION
STUDENTS’ UNION
A lawfully constituted Students’ Union exists in the College to ensure proper implementation
of students’ welfare schemes and also to vindicate the academic rights of the students. The
Students’ Union, in co-operation with the teachers & staff, also ensures student - participation in diverse cultural and academic activities and in the annual sports meet of the College.

LIBRARY
Students are given cards to borrow books from the General Library. Books borrowed from
the library should be checked before borrowing and taken care of while reading. Any loss
or damage must be compensated for. Advanced Honours students are given one extra book
for fifteen days. The department selects the advanced learners on the basis of their
performance. All General course students are entitled to borrow books for a stipulated
period of time. Internet facility is available in the library. The Library cards are to be
returned compulsory before filling up of examination forms.
SEMINAR LIBRARY
Nearly all the Honours departments of the College have Seminar Libraries. Honours students may borrow books of frequent use from the Seminar Library of their department.
BOOK BANK
Needy students of the College may apply for Textbooks from the Book Bank after TEST
Examination. The Application must be supported by Income Certificate issued by appropriate Authority. Screening is done when the number of Applicants is too large. Text books
issued from the Book Bank are not required to be returned before the completion of the
Final Examination.
HOSTEL
For students coming from far off places, there are three well-furnished Hostels in the
college campus - Roquia, Swarnakumari and Sarala. Priority for accommodation is given
to the students with Honours in consideration of merit and in some cases, distance.
Allotment of Hostel seats is made subject wise. A boarder, willing to leave Hostel after two
months of Admission has to pay seat rent for one-half year. Each Hostel has a warden and
adequate number of mess- staff. PWD candidates are entitled to special consideration for
Hostel admission.
TRAVELLING CONCESSION
The College issues Railway Travel Concession (RTC) Form to day –scholars commuting
from home. Application for the same is not entertained during the Summer Recess and the
Puja Vacation. The RTC form is normally issued on Quarterly basis.

PARKING
There is provision in the campus for keeping cycles of the students and the staff alike.
Cycle tokens are to be collected at the beginning of the Academic Session from the
caretakers of the cycle stand on payment of necessary charges (@ ` 10.00 per month) and
these tokens are to be returned after the Test Examination. Once the token is issued, the
discontinuity is to be officialised by return of token and written application in this regard.

OTHER ACHIEVEMENT
The College has been awarded the Best Prize (District Level) for success in Kanyashree
Prakalpa.The Students of the College have also received the Best Award in the District and
Burdwan Division in Youth Parliament Competition.
HEALTHY PRACTICES
PLACEMENT CELL
The Placement cell with the help of the department concerned has been actively engaged
in finding suitable placement for students. Every year campus recruitment drive by IBM/
WIPRO is held and a number of students get offers for job from the company even before
they pass out of the college. With the assistance of the District Employment Exchange the
College has been trying to extend better career guidance service to the job aspirants.
COUNSELLING CELL
The College has a personal counselling cell for the students. The factulty associated help
students to tide over stress and strain in situations of crisis.
EVALUATION
The College has a system of evaluation of the performance of the teachers by students,
much appreciated by NAAC. Students of the College are expected to be seriously and
attentively engaged in the learning process so that they might be in a position to evaluate
the performance of their instructors. The acquisitional progress of the students is assessed
throughout the year through class tests (normally four tests for Hons papers of 100 marks)
and two other Tests are held. The tests are to be taken seriously, for marks obtained in
class tests are recorded in the Merit Register and taken into account to determine the
eligibility of a student for taking University Examination. As part of modification of
education pattern the college has introduced Supplementary Test for students who missed
their Pre-Final Test on medical or other grounds.

PARENT-STAFF MEETING
The college meets the parents/guardians of the students every year usually on July 28. All
parents/guardians are cordially invited to attend the meeting and enrich the College Authority with their valuable suggestions for improvement.
ANTI-RAGGING SQUAD
Ragging in the College Hostel is strictly prohibited. Any student found guilty of ragging may
be rusticated by the college. Hostel boarders are required to immediately bring to the
notice of the Authority each case of ragging for appropriate disciplinary action. As per
UGC guideline, an anti-ragging squad has been formed by the Governing Body. Any student
feeling harassed may move the Anti-ragging Squad for justice. The following are the

As per UGC guideline the college management has constituted a committee for protection

MAGAZINE & JOURNAL
ESONA, the college magazine, is regularly published to nurture the artistic/literary and com
municative potentials of the students. Orginality and scholarship are the criteria for selection in the matter of publication and the decision of the Magazine sub-committee is final
regarding publication of submitted material.The College publishes a Multi-disciplinary
Refereed journal JAST with the contribution mainly from the faculty of the college.
WALL MAGAZINE
The College also periodically publishes Wall Magazines separately for Science, Social
Science and Literature students. The entire work of publication is done by the students
themselves. The College Alumni Association has shown interest in ensuring the regularity
of its publication.
SPORTS
Our students are regularly selected for University team, specialy Handball, Kabadi & KhoKho team. Apart from organizing the Annual Sports Meet the college on a regular basis
sends outstanding sports persons to participate in different Inter-collegiate and District
Sports Meet. The College has created Gymnasium facility for all its students. There is also
scope for playing out-door games in the playground developed in 2012.

NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME (NSS)
Students are always encouraged to join the N.S.S. unit of the College as volunteers. The
N.S.S. volunteers organize various programmes at regular intervals. N.S.S. programmes
aim at social development through Literacy Drive, Family Planning Programmes, Medical check-up, Environmental awareness etc. After completion of 240 hrs of social service in a span of two years, the volunteers are entitled to get an N.S.S. certificate from

NATIONAL CADET CORPS (NCC)
Students admitted to the college may join the N.C.C. as cadets under 5 Bengal Battalion
(Girls). The College helps arranging training classes, parades and firing practice for the
enrolled cadets in the College campus. Classes and training are held for two hours once
a week on every Sunday. The N.C.C. authority supplies uniform and other necessary
articles to the cadets. Once enrolled as a cadet, a student has to undergo training at least
for two years. The army arranges various camps, like Advanced Leaders’ Camp, Republic Day Camp, All India Summer Training Camp and Neighboring State Camp for the
cadets.

INFORMATION FOR ONLINE ADMISSION
Registration for Online admission will be allowed during a specified period through
admission website (www.mucwcadmission.com) and the steps are given below.
a) STEP-I (Registration):
Registration includes entries of student details: (Name, date of birth, parent's name,
guardian's name, address, category [UR/ SC/ ST/ OBC-A/OBC-B], PWD (YES/NO),
mobile number, marks obtained (% of marks of secondary/equivalent level and subject
wise marks of higher secondary/equivalent level) & name of the Board, Registration
number, year of passing (higher secondary/equivalent level).
Name of the Board at higher secondary/equivalent level must be selected from the list
of approved boards (NOS, IGNOU, CBSE, ISC, WBCHSE, RMV, NSOV, OTHERS).
Un-enlisted boards are to be written by selecting 'OTHERS'.
To restrict multiple registrations by single applicant, name of the Board & registration
number at higher secondary/equivalent level will be considered for verification of
identity.
After successful completion of Online Admission Form Unique Registration Number and
Form Number will be generated by Computer. These are very important and will be
forwarded via SMS. (if mobile number is available).
The Unique Application Number will be treated as User Id and Date of Birth (dd/mm/
yyyy) will be treated as Password for further communication.
There shall be a provision for changing password for security purposes and that should
be remembered.
b) STEP II (Payment for Registration) :
For confirmation of Online Registration applicants must get a print-out of the e-challan
for Registration and deposit registration fee (Rs. 100/-, Non-Refundable) at any branch
of SBI within notified dates.
Duration for online registration and payment of registration fee is 9 days. (Nine days
for registration as well as submission of registration fees).
Those who want to make cash payment are to close all formalities regarding payment
within banking hours of the dateline.
Service charge may depend on "Mode of payment".
c) STEP III (Locking of choices)
Applicants must "LOCK" their choices only after they have finalized their options. If
candidates fail to lock their choices by 5.00 PM of last date (final day i.e. 9th day of
registration), their last saved choices will be automatically locked using "AUTOLOCK"
feature.
Applicants will be allowed to exercise maximum six choices for Honours Course from
among those subjects for whom they are eligible.
All choices will be considered equally preferred.

d) STEP IV ( Publication of merit list)
Subject-wise and category wise merit list will be generated on the basis of intake
capacity separately for Honours and General Courses. So applicants who want to study
in the college even if Honours in the subject of preference is not available are to apply
for the same.
Reservation as per rule: UR 55%, SC 22%, ST 6%, OBC-A 10% & OBC-B 7% (PWD
3% will be reserved considering all the categories).
Reserved category applicants will be considered in unreserved list as well as reserved
list provided that they have equivalent merit point; otherwise they will be considered only
for reserved category. If a Reserved category candidate having name in both Reserved
and unreserved lists gets admitted, she will be treated as unreserved and the reservation
facility will be extended to the next in reserved merit list.
e ) STEP V (Acceptance of choices)
Applicant must click the "ACCEPT" button to book her seat for the subject(s) in which
she has been merit listed within stipulated phase. Otherwise her name will be deleted
from the merit list.
Duration for each phase of online admission will be 2+1 days of which the Final day
must be a bank working day.
f) STEP VI (Payment for admission):
For confirmation of online admission applicants must get a printout of the e-challan for
admission and deposit admission fee (as mentioned) at any branch of SBI within
stipulated date.
Those who want to make cash payment are to close all formalities regarding payment
within banking hours of the dateline.
Service charge may depend on "Mode of payment".
All the online admissions are provisional.
g) STEP VII (Verification of documents):
Within every phase merit listed applicants must appear in the college office with all
testimonials (in ORIGINAL) including payment documents (e-challan of registration and
admission) and print out of filled-up online Admission Form for verification.
After verification, applicants will have to deposit course fee, where applicable, at college
cash counter and collect roll number specific bill book to complete the admission process
(Fees structure).
If any discrepancies are found during the verification of original testimonials, the college
authority will have the right to cancel the admission of the student but the fees deposited
will be refundable.
Verification of documents for confirmation of admission is to be completed before the
expiry of next phase (i.e. for Phase 1, within Phase2; for Phase2, within Phase3 and
so on).\
GENERAL INFORMATION
Applicants are requested to visit admission website (www.mucwcadmission.com)
regularly for updating about how many seats are lying vacant in a particular subject of
her option.

Applicants may apply for Only Honours course or Only General course or Both Honours
and General courses.
Eligibility Criteria for Honours and General Courses:
i. Passing H.S. /equivalent level in 2012, 2013, 2014 & 2015.
ii. For Honours course, at least 45% marks in aggregate including Honours seeking subjects
(or allied subject).
iii. For General Courses, at least pass marks in aggregate including combination subjects.
iv. In practical based subjects pass marks is to be obtained separately in theory and
practical parts.
Merit point calculation:
Merit Point for Honours courses (M) = X + Y + Z
Merit Point for General courses (M) = Y
where
X : % of marks obtained at secondary/ equivalent level (except additional subject);
Y : % of marks obtained at H.S. /equivalent level (best one language and best three electives
except Environmental Studies);
Z : % of marks obtained at H.S./equivalent level in the Honours seeking subject/allied subject.
No marks from merit point will be deducted for year lapse i.e. for passing in 2012, 2013
& 2014.
SMS information of allotted choices will be sent to applicant as per serial number in the
applicant's choice list. However, as the same may remain undelivered for technical
faults, applicants are requested to verify status at the beginning of every phase.
After 1st phase if any discrepancies be found regarding student data, corrections of
merit list will be made strictly on the basis of applications from candidates along with
supporting document before the publication of merit list for the third phase of admission.
In case of inadvertent error the applicant may apply with proper documents for
consideration in the next phase. The claim of such candidate for a Honours subject will
be entertained if the merit point comes down to the level of her Grade and if any seat
lies vacant after accommodating all other candidates of equivalent Grade.
The provisional admission is to be ultimately approved by the affiliating University to
which every admitted student is to apply for Registration and Enrolment.
Applicants who have already registered but have not got chance for admission to any
of the six honours courses of their choice may change their option subject to the
following conditions:
a. There must be a subject in which all the applicants have been offered chance for
admission but seats are vacant because the merit listed candidates have not accepted
the chance.
b. The applicant exercises her option by revising her earlier choice i.e. surrendering the
stipulated number of subjects of first option.
c. The maximum number of subjects available for re-option is three.
d. The candidate fulfils the eligibility criteria for studying the subject.
e. Exercising this option means her name will be automatically deleted from the merit list
of the subject she is surrendering for the purpose of re-option.
f. Applicants will have to visit the college website for notification regarding date of reoption, if any. The decision of the admission committee will be final in this regard.
