ANDHERI: BJP MLA Ameet Satham's illegal hawker surprise drive has shut
sooner than expected. Mumbai Messenger had reported that the local MLA,
along with other members (BJP-VP Andheri (W) Satyajeet Sharma and Vicky
Mehra, VP BJP-Yuva Morcha Rohan Rathod and Abhishek Tiwari) and the
Municipal officer, had demolished illegal stalls in various parts of Andheri. This
was part of surprise drive, aimed at instilling fear amongst illegal hawkers and
clearing them off various areas. It was undertaken after incessant complaints
from residents.
Shops that had encroached upon areas of Manish Nagar, JP Road, Ceasar
Road, Ratan Nagar and Bon-Bon lane were demolished. Despite such efforts,
the hawkers have returned and continue to fearlessly encroach upon areas that
are rightfully to be used by citizens, such as footpaths. They have been
carrying out business without any disruption. For innumerable residents, the
issue is far from being solved and the efforts invested last week, have been
futile. There are around 20-25 illegal stalls running valiantly in Bon-Bon lane
itself including several grocery, fruit and Vada-Pav stalls, a tea shop, a cycle
repair shop and a few other food stalls. When asked, none of them had any
license to carry out business.

D.N.NAGAR: Is Mumbai's Air Traffic Control (ATC's)
transmitting station located at D N Nagar in Andheri
West safe and secure? The answer is no. Though
Mumbai has gone through several turbulences like
terrorist attacks, bomb blasts and so on, the Airport
Authority of India (AAI) has not learnt any lessons
and left the entire area free for all. Ignorance with
regards to security is dangerous and could make
the area a soft target for bad elements.
India's second busiest airport, Mumbai's flights
safe landing and takeoff are controlled by the Air
Traffic Control (ATC). The main wireless
transmitting station centre of the Airport Authority
of India (AAI) is located in one of the posh localities
of D N Nagar at Andheri West. Many towers are
installed here for transmitting messages for
smoother flight movements. The transmission
centre is spread over 64-acres right from the preindependence period.
Unfortunately, the main transmission area is not
secure and safe. Surprisingly, the boundary wall

“The menace of hawkers illegally taking over
pavements and creating nuisance for pedestrians and local
residents of the area needs to stop. This is like their 'raaj.'
They set up stalls without licenses wherever they wish.
How is a tax paying citizen expected to fearlessly walk on
the road, without the fear of potholes or the need to dodge
illegal vendors? The BMC needs to be made accountable in
more than one way. Their callous attitude towards the
residents and the citizens as a whole reflects on the city,
especially the suburbs, which is nothing but overcrowded
and unhygienic,” laments Rajiv Grover, a local resident.
Vishwa Shah, a social activist and Andheri resident who
recently led a campaign against hawker encroachments
said, “The authorities have created untimely issues before
the onset of monsoons. Hawkers continue to be an integral
part of Andheri, without being allocated space for the same
in the Development Plan. Underground subways can be
created to resolve this issue. Also, hawkers are encouraged
by the full support of the public at large. Residents need to
refrain from going to them, if they want them to go away.”
“The BMC vehicle has been going around places,
evicting illegal hawkers. The situation has certainly
improved. 100% eradication in a week isn't possible.
Similar drives have been conducted at Juhu, Juhu Church
Road and around Lallu-Bhai Park. The BMC's labor staff is
certainly hand-in-glove with the hawkers, which is why I
personally had to supervise the drive on April 28. On April
30, we met Municipal Commissioner Ajay Mehta, who had
given strict instructions to Ward Officer Parag Masurkar for
undertaking ruthless action against the encroachers.”
“Even though people might feel BMC's preoccupied with
monsoon preparations, the encroachers have to be
removed regardless of the season. Also, if the BMC doesn't
take any action, I certainly will,” asserted MLA Ameet
Satham.
“All the stalls lie in a No-Hawker zone. After complaints
from residents, we conducted an anti-encroachment drive
on April 28, but the MLA can't conduct a drive each day. We
have been continuously pressurizing the BMC, but they
hardly seem concerned about the issue. It's the BMC's job
to wipe out the area off encroachers with the help of the
local police. They are accountable to answer all the
questions,” replied Satyajeet Sharma BJP-VP Andheri W on
being asked how the administration sought to resolve the
issue.
“The BMC encroachment van has continuously been
patrolling the area and has been trying vigorously to
evacuate the pavements, but the information reaches
hawkers even before the van reaches the spot. We are
trying everything possible to evict illegal hawkers,” replied
Parag Masurkar.
Vijay Khabalee Patil, PRO BMC Mumbai assured of
action on receiving further complaints. “Let us know where
the vendors have returned and we will do what we can,”
said Patil. Corporator Vanita Marucha said, “The stalls are
illegal and even after being evacuated several times,
hawkers and vendors return each time, so I guess it would
be better to arrange an alternate open space for them.”
All concerned authorities shed the matter off
their shoulders and provided no assurance to resolve the
issue any time soon. In no time, the blame-game started
and political and bureaucratic officers blatantly blamed
each other.
On the other hand, the hawkers are unhappy and

Many private vehicles enter and exit (See Pic) from there. The area is a cricket ground and many
children play cricket there. There is only one private security guard, who is least bothered to ask
anyone who enters and exits from the gate. This correspondent visited the site and found that a
lone security guard relaxing in the security shade.
The AAI management is ignoring safety and security measures of wireless transmitting area for
unknown reasons. If any untoward incident like terrorist attacks or sabotage takes place, it could

dreading another surprise drive. “After the 28th, no demolition has taken place,
but the BMC vehicle came once and took the temporary shed from over my
stall,” quoted Manohar, a Vada Pav vendor at the site. Prem Kumar, a grocery
vendor is dreading another drive, “They say the BMC authorities can come
anytime and start vandalizing our stalls, but no one has troubled us since the
last drive.”
Even after promises from concerned authorities, there has been no
improvement in the state of affairs. The 'hawker raaj' continues to prevail and
all efforts and promises by the authorities only seem to be frivolous and naïve in
nature.
spell disaster for flights operations. It might come to a standstill. One can see that many intruders
are roaming around in the premises. It is unbelievable but true that some drug addicts were sitting
behind long grown grass near the wall of “The Club” area.
As per the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) guideline, wireless transmitting area is
strictly prohibited and no one is permitted in the area, except AAI employees and designated
personnel. It should be fully secured and protected with high walls and security gate. It should be
manned by armored guards for round the clock safety and security.
A highly place source in the AAI, on the condition of anonymity said, “About six months back a
decision was taken to increase the height of the walls from the current five feet to eight feet. New
fencing should be installed and electric current should be activated. Also, a security alarm should be
installed. In case one tries to trespass, he would get a current and emergency alarm would ring
constantly. It looks like all these norms remain on paper and the management is also ignoring it for
unknown reasons.
It may be noted that all over the world, transmission centres are located in secure areas.
Adequate security arrangements like armored security guards, patrolling vehicles and closed circuit
televisions (CCTV) are in place to protect the area. This can avoid any untoward incidents.
Gajanan Kirtikar, Local Member of Parliament said “A lapse in AAI's Wireless Transmitting area at
Andheri is really a cause of concern. How can the AAI authority
ignore security of crucial set ups? The safety and security of prime
set ups and Mumbai city is of paramount importance and should be
fool proof. I have personally reviewed the entire area and found
many lapses. I am writing a letter to the Minister of Civil Aviation
and Central Minister of Home affairs, highlighting the issue.”
Nitin Shirgaonkar, a local social activist says “The AAI wireless
transmitting area should have security arrangements by the CISF
or local police for better security and safety. It is a need of the hour
to take corrective measures before any disaster takes place due to
security lapse.” When contacted, G S Bawa, G M, PR, his secretary
said, "He is in a meeting and will get back to you.” Sanjay Jain, GM
Vigilance was unavailable for comments. His secretary told this
correspondent, "He is in a meeting and will connect to you as soon
as he returns to office.” B S Tiwary Regional deputy commissioner,

LOKHANDWALA: The patrons of Mumbai Congress and the
residents of Lokhandwala, united to express solidarity with the
people of Nepal in a relief rally held on May 3, to raise funds for the
earthquake victims.
Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam led the rally from the
front along with top Congressmen including District President
Baldev Khosa, leader of Opposition Bala Amberkar, Ex-MLA Ashok
Bhau Jadhav, Municipal Corporators Jyotsna Dighe and Vanita
Marucha, Gafoor Khan, Vice-President of the Congress' Women
wing Gurpreet Kaur Chadda and other prominent leaders.
The rally set forth at 10:30am from Celebration Sports Club,
Lokhandwala and veered onto Lokhandwala Complex. Congress
officials went from door to door, shop to shop, to raise funds for
the cause and people happily obliged to help in whichever way
they could. Congress workers rode on bikes, followed by the big
guns and a van, carrying speakers clamouring for aid to the noble
cause. Several auto rickshaw drivers stopped in their way to drop
money into the moneybox and extend a helping hand.
“Rescue operations are almost complete, so the need of the
hour is to accelerate the relief work. We would be sending clothing
and medication in bulk along with monetary assistance. I myself
might fly to Nepal for the same. I humbly appeal people to
contribute to our efforts. These efforts might not create a huge
impact, but it is our duty to help our neighbours in adversary
circumstances, in the name of mankind and humanity,” quoted
Nirupam while talking to the media.
Baldev Khosa stated, “We are aware that this rally might not do
wonders in terms of capital, but it would at least raise awareness
and appeal. The All India Congress Committee is committed to
help the victims. A separate amount would be added by the
Congress Committee itself, to this rally's collection and would be
wired to Nepal and parts of Bihar.”
The rally moved on to Bala Sahib Devras Marg towards
Dhirubhai Kokilaben Hospital and ended at Andheri Railway
Station. The active participation of top Congress leaders and
beaming energy of their workforce made the rally a success,
hailing the humanitarian cause. Mumbai Congress has separately
opened an account which goes by the name of 'Mumbai Congress
Nepal Relief Fund' to which people willing to contribute can
donate.
“I read the accounts of the victims in newspapers and got to
know that bodies are still being discovered from under the rubble.
In Kathmandu, people don't posses utensils to drink water. The
situation is sensitive and we want to give all that we can. We are
also sending aid with people leaving for Nepal to help in the relief
operation,” said Jyotsna Dighe.
Leader of Opposition, Maharashtra assembly Devendra Bala
Amberkar informed about similar rallies being organised in other
Talukas of Mumbai. “Mumbai Congress has organised similar
rallies in Andheri (E), North Mumbai, South Mumbai and other
talukas as well.” Apart from this initiative, fund raising is also being
carried out on a personal level. “We are contributing to Mumbai
Congress's efforts as much as possible. My own society is raising
money and other utilities, which would be delivered to Nepal
through Mumbai Congress. I also appreciate the efforts of Singer
Mika Singh's NGO Devine Touch which has already left for Nepal,”
Gurpreet Kaur Chada, VP Women Congress Committee, Mumbai
regional.

KASHISH BIJLANI (16), DAUGHTER OF SHIVANI BIJLANI
Residents of Sundervan Complex
Three words to describe your mother: Adorable, affectionate, admirable
Ways in which the both of you are alike: We are both very social, warm
and friendly people. We like being in groups and are easy to get along with.
Ways in which the both of you are different: We are both
temperamentally very different. Mom is cool as a cucumber and I am very
hyper. Mom is very soft spoken, while I am trying to follow her footsteps.
Valuable lesson of life your mother has taught you: She has taught me
all I need to know to live a life of a sixteen-year-old teenage girl. She has
taught me how to feel. Well, she did not only do that but also taught me how to
handle feelings of fear, guilt, excitement, sadness and anxiety.
Qualities you admire about your mother: I admire so many of them but
to mention a few I would say my mother is very generous and kind hearted.
She is very polite, graceful and I love her in every way possible.
Mothers Day plan: Mothers Day worldwide is a day for many people to show
their appreciation towards their mother, but for me, I would rather celebrate
Mothers Day in a very simple manner where I would listen to her and do things
that would make her happy.
HAZEL PAUL SINGH (33), DAUGHTER OF MARY PAUL
Resident of Versova
Three words to describe your mother: Life, Love and Learning
Ways in which the both of you are alike: Many who know us think we
are carbon copies of each other. We like to keep things simple and rarely
experiment but at the same time we are determined sometimes bordering on
stubbornness . Family has always been our priority and nothing brings us more
joy in extending help to everyone around.
Ways in which the both of you are different: The only thing that we
slightly differ in our thought process and approach to things is the way she has
always liked to plan for the future and I prefer living for the day but this could
also be a reflection of our generation and today's unpredictable times.
Valuable lesson of life your mother has taught you: The most
valuable lesson taught by her is the will to survive. Having to fight a battle with
Cancer and her determination to overcome it has made me a stronger person.
She has always been my pillar of strength and her will to survive the odds is the
most valuable lesson I have learnt.
Qualities you admire about your mother: She is the most selfless,
giving, loving and caring person not only to her children or family but to
everyone around. I call her Mother Teresa.
Mothers Day plan: Unfortunately now that we live in different cities, it
gets difficult to celebrate the day together but I would have loved to do fun
activities that she would enjoy through the day like shopping, eating out and
watching a film.
RUCHIR ARORA (27), DAUGHTER OF PRETTI ARORA
Residents of Lokhandwala
Three words to describe your mother: Understanding, confident and
pillar of strength
Ways in which the both of you are alike: We are compatible with each
other and I can share anything and everything with her. I can freely express my
feelings to her, which makes me feel really lucky.
Ways in which the both of you are different: We are different in
handling situations. She gets hyper while I calm her down.
Valuable lesson of life your mother has taught you: She is a very
helpful person and seeing her doing things for people even if it means going out
of the way, has also moulded me. I have become like her. I love this quality
about her.
Qualities you admire about your mother: She is extremely dedicated
to her family and loved ones. She will go out of the way to help those dear to
her and everyone else around.
Mothers Day plan: I would love to take her on a date to Dubai...since
that's her favourite place.

Resident of Lokhandwala Complex
Three words to describe your mother: Mum Meri Jaan
Ways in which the both of you are alike: Both of us love irritating each
other, at the same time, we are inseparable. We cannot do without each other.
Ways in which the both of you are different: I love messing up with
things and then finding solutions to the thing, whereas she loves to keep it
simple, without any problems.
Valuable lesson of life your mother has taught you: My mother has
taught me one of the most important lessons – No matter what problem or
difficulty you face, you always need to have faith in yourself and faith in God.
She has also taught me to work hard to achieve my goal.
Qualities you admire about your mother: I admire every single thing
about my mother. She possesses the best qualities in every possible way and
she has gladly passed on her positive vibes and influence on everyone around
her.
Mothers Day plan: I will bake her a cake, along with some tasty food, with
a perfect gift.
AVNI MEHTA (17), DAUGHTER OF ANJALI MEHTA
Resident of Lokhandwala
Three words to describe your mother: Flawless, beautiful and
superwoman
Ways in which the both of you are alike: Since we are both Tauruses,
we ag=hare a lot in common. There's barely anything I like, and she doesn't.
Ways in which the both of you are different: Like I said, we have
almost everything in common. From our favourite colour, to our favourite
hobbies. Everything. She is more like a twin to me.
Valuable lesson of life your mother has taught you: My mom teaches
me something new everyday. She is one of the strongest people I have ever
come across. She has always taught me to stay strong, no matter what.
Troubles come and go; how you deal with them is what is important.
Qualities you admire about your mother: She has a heart made of
gold. Never in my life have I heard her say 'no' to anyone. She's full of love and
warmth. Its because of her exuberance, that the atmosphere at home is always

Three words to describe your mother: Friend, caring and giving
Ways in which the both of you are alike: We both like food, we like
cooking. We also resemble each other a lot and get tensed quickly about
things.
Ways in which the both of you are different: My mom is not tech savvy
while I am. She is a cleanliness freak, an attribute that I am still learning from
her. She is extremely particular about small things while I am not.
Valuable lesson of life your mother has taught you: Help others
without expecting any payback. She has instilled in me very high morals and
values in me which I am glad I will carry with me my entire life.
Qualities you admire about your mother: My mother is extremely

Mothers Day plan: As the day
suggests, this is a special day for
mothers. However, I don't plan
anything fancy. I want to do the small
things that make her feel special like
making her favourite sandwich,
making her tea or buying her
favourite flowers. Also, I choose to be
off the phone to show her I care, and
spend time with her instead.

The mangrove area is turning into a hot spot for
dumping all kinds of debris

LOKHANDWALA: On May 1, the residents of
Andheri West came out together in the support of
mangroves, whose depleting condition has been
bothering environment lovers since long.
The residents alleged that Jankidevi School
authorities are encroaching on the CRZ land in the
area. A resident said, “I am living here since the
last 20 years. This was a narrow lane earlier but in
the recent years, I have witnessed this lane turning
into a wide road. This land is reserved for
mangroves. Then how can it be used for something
else?”
In recent years it has been observed that the
mangrove area is turning into a hot spot for
dumping all kinds of debris. A concerned resident,
Soni said, “I see loaded trucks coming in this area
and dumping garbage here. If you take a look, you
will see piles of debris actually killing the
mangroves.”

Residents have
also registered a complaint at the Versova police
station. Local resident Harina Kanchan said, "We
have filed a complaint against the authorities of the
school, which is being run by National Congress
Party (NCP) leader Narendra Verma. But even
after the complaint, the police has taken no
action.”
Filmmaker and Social Activist, Ashoke Pandit
and AAP Mumbai Convenor Mayank Jain were
also roped in by residents to take a look at the
dying mangroves. Ashoke Pandit said, “I am
surely going to take up this issue. All I need are the
documents; I will take care of the rest.” Mayank
Jain said, “This is a CRZ land and no one is
authorised to touch this land. This is against the
law and intolerable.” Mayank also called the BMC
ward officer to explain to him the issue to which
the Ward officer replied, “I have no idea about
what is happening there. I need to take a look first.”
The Forest Department officials were also
called in who clicked pictures of the ground and
took all the reports. Officer Mayur Borte said, “We have made all the reports
with pictures. It will be sent to the higher authorities and they will soon take
action.”
This week, the committee members of Cosmos Society,
Lokhandwala Complex, spoke to Kritika Sharma about
the development work and issues in and around their
society, consisting of 46 flats. The society Committee
included Chairman Ravinder Bedi and Secretary Sanjay
Parashar along with other members Devendra Pandey,
Sunil Sampat, Dr. Rajinder Gandhi, Joe C D'Souza,
Dadarkar and Padma Mirchandani. The committee
members praised the BMC that all year round, they have
never had any water or electricity issue. They also praised
the builder, as till date they have never made any big
investment towards maintenance. They all recently
renovated their lobbies and have focused on making their

society the best one to live in...
Smooth Working: Praising the smooth work of the changed. I think the club should be run by all the
society, the members said, “In every society, there is a members.” Devendra Pandey said, “What they do is that
fight for something or the other but in ours, there are no they target a representative who is not very active and also
disputes. This is probably because we only have 46 flats isn't in their interest. Then they try to find out a person in
and work is done only after all members arrive at a that society who they know well and then switch him with
unanimous decision. We keep every society member the person who is not in their favor. Through this method,
they try to create a vote bank for

Sanjay Parashar said, “When it
comes financial issues, we have maintained total and never let any such manipulation happen. We want the
transparency. Whenever we take up any development managing committee to work for the association and not
work, we circulate the balance sheet amongst members so just for the club.”
Development Plan: Devendra Pandey said, “In
they know where their money is going.”
Children's contribution: Parashar said, “Recently Lokhandwala, the maximum FSI given is 3.5. On the
we gave Rs. 1 lakh to the children of the society and asked contrary, in Lokhandwala around 1.8 FSI is used. So if only
them to build their own club. It was done in order to make 3.5 is going to be the maximum then no one in this area is
them responsible. They have beautifully made a club going to develop. At least 5 FSI is required, which is not
wherein they have installed all indoor games they like.”
The Chairman, Ravinder Bedi said, “We are also planning
to take up 'Swachh Cosmos Abhiyan' wherein we are going
to give kids complete authority to plan an activity for the
society.”
ISSUES THAT IRK MEMBERS:
Celebration Sports Club: The members said that all
the issues surrounding the club are discussed openly in
their committee meetings. The secretary said, “Whenever
we write letters to the club, they never reply. They should
acknowledge the fact that our society falls under their
association.” Sunil Sampat said, “The working of that club
is manipulative. Suppose there are 109 societies that fall
under the federation, and only one representative member
is allowed to vote from every society. So to win an election,
one man has to win the trust of 50-60 people and he will be
through. There is no representation of sentiments of the
general people. Whether a society has 16 members or
160, they have just one rep and one vote. This needs to be

given in the Development Plan. If this doesn't happen then
redevelopment in this area will be very difficult. The DP
2034 has been scrapped but the DCR which consists of FSI
has not been scrapped yet.”
Rising crimes: The secretary said, “Many chain
snatching cases have taken place on Back Road. Even in
our lane, this year, 2-3 chain-snatching cases have taken
place. Along with that, prostitution, bike racing and drugs
are a huge problem. Now our own club has wasted Rs.2.5
crores on registration, which hasn't happen. Now instead,
if they would have installed CCTV cameras all around
where no there is no surveillance, then crimes would have
reduced.”
Taxi Stand: Sunil Sampat said, “In our Third Cross lane,
there is an unauthorized taxi stand. Someone filed an RTI
and found out that not more than two taxis can stand here.
But 5-6 taxis keep standing, creating a bottle neck and
traffic issues. The best part is that they never want to
travel are short distance like even going to the airport.”

People’s Verdict
Salman Khan has been sentenced to 5 years imprisonment in the muchawaited 2002 hit and run case. He was held guilty of all the eight charges
inflicted on him. This is what residents of Andheri had to say about it to
Gajendra Goswami...
Poornima Advani, Former Chairperson National commission for
Women: Salman Khan case gives a strong message that putting
up front entities cannot always help.
RACHIT SACHDEVA, 29:
I think it's a good decision. Things have changed a lot
since the incident, which claimed a life as well. So I
guess he deserves it.
VINAY SAHAL, 34:
The decision is good though it came too late. I feel
happy that the victims and their families have finally
received justice. I would be happier if the High Court
doesn't overrule the verdict of the Sessions Court.

CHETAN KATE, 38:
5 years is a fair term. I think the decision is justified
taking into account that it had already been delayed for
13 years.

Evening was called in to embrace the beauty of Urdu language and celebrate its spirit
SONIA PALKAR, 35:
I feel 5 years is too much considering the amount of
charity work he has done through his franchise Being
Human. But he obviously needs to be punished for what
he had done. A lesser term in prison would have been
fairer.
“Those whom I considered
to be the saviours of Urdu,
turned out be its true
enemies”
– Lata Haya
SHADAB SHEIKH, 28:
I am a die-hard Salman fan. He should have been
acquitted. 5 years in jail is a rough decision. Even a
year's imprisonment would have been ruthless
considering he's already suffered a lot of humiliation in
the case.

SUYOG DHAHAKE, 29:
If someone has committed a crime then he should be
adjudged accordingly, no matter who he or she is. If
Salman would have been acquitted today, tomorrow
someone else would have done the same things.
Jurisdictional matters should be judged regardless of the
profession of the convict and I'm very happy with this
verdict.
PRIYAL DESAI, 21:
Even Salman Khan is an Indian citizen and even he's
accountable to severe punishment if he's committed a
crime. Culpable homicide is a severe offence and so the
verdict is fully justified.
MILLAT NAGAR: On May 1, Haya

The organizing committee
included Lata Haya, Nirdesh Aftab and

for the evening. Renowned poets and
shayars recited verses, including Prof.

Commissioner of Police, Mumbai
Krishna Prasad, Ex cabinet minister of
Maharashtra, Mohammad Arif
Naseem Khan and film Actor,

honor.
This was the first ever Mushaira in
Millat Nagar. The evening was called
in to embrace the beauty of Urdu
language and celebrate its spirit.
“Until I was on stage and reciting
poems, organizing a Mushaira
seemed easy to me, but it turned out
to be a tedious task. I especially thank
Millat Nagar Residents Welfare
Federation for their considerate
support. I like to be called the
daughter of Urdu and all my life I have
worked to spread its beauty and
power. All of us are here for the love of
this language. Lets embrace it to the
fullest,” clamoured Lata Haya. She
lamented people who misused the
language for their personal gains,
aiming at several authorities,
politicians and artists. “I got little help
from people I expected to help me the
most. Those whom I considered to be
the saviours of Urdu, turned out be its
true enemies,” she loathed in a heavy
voice.
VISHAL SHARMA, 28:
I heard the news and I am disheartened. We treated

A FLIGHT TO STUDY ABROAD
PHOTO/NIKET KOTECHA
If you wish to study abroad and are holding yourself back due to
lack of knowledge, inadequate funds, little knowledge on the
application process, this is what you need to read. Sumit Sial, the
director of 'Kompass Careers,' an overseas education and
immigration firm, gives insight into the entire process in a
conversation with Shrutika Sukhi...
What is the procedure if one wishes to study aboard?
Students are first asked to do a research on the career they
wish to choose and short list the country and the university they
wish to apply to. We see their eligibility criteria and their financial
background. Their aptitude test is also taken. Once the university
and institutes are short listed by us, we make applications to the
universities and wait to receive an offer letter from them. Once
we get that we ask the student to choose from the universities we
received an offer letter from and pay the first semester fee
(especially in Australia; Canada does not require fees). Financial
statements are very important. Universities don't take students
who aren't financially stable. One has to show that they can fund
for the course they have applied for and live there for at least one
year. Once the payment is made, the student gets a COV
(Conformation of Enrolment). Once the COV is received by us, we
apply for the students visa, which is valid for a couple of months
more than the duration of the course. Post this, the student is
almost set to go. We conduct a seminar on pre-departure
information wherein tips and guidelines are given to students as
to how to find part time work, their accommodation and other
problems they may face.
How does the firm help students?
We make sure that we understand the student's aspirations
and career path chosen. Many times students wish to change
their field. We see their eligibility, financial status and then offer
possible suggestions. Once the student makes a choice, we make
applications. Help with all documentation, statement of purpose,
recommendation letters are sorted. The final figures are given to
them. As we have tie-ups with various banks, we help them with
the loan process too. We also make a two-year budget for their
expenses so that the student gets an idea of the expenses
incurred. Help is provided even to procure a visa through
application as we have visa experts who maximize the chances.
After the person lands in the county desired, we constantly keep
in touch with them and help them for a few months until they are
independent.
What are the benefits of studying abroad?
The courses pursued are globally recognized. The Australian
qualification is recognized globally while Indian qualification is
not. Indian qualification is accepted in Middles East and Africa. A
person gets international exposure. Communication skills
improve; students are more confident.
The professional
environment abroad is very different; they learn work ethics.
Which countries excel in which courses?
Australia is very good for vocational courses, any skill set
training jobs. There are also great MBA programs there. Out of
100, the top 7 MBA institutes are in Australia. There are also great
IT programs. Same is the case with Canada and New Zealand. UK
is known for higher degrees in fields like Law, Medicine or
Doctorate. Germany is great for Automobile Engineering.
Which is the toughest country to crack?
USA has a very tedious admission process; it's very
competitive and tough. Canada, New Zealand and Australia are
the most relaxed western countries for admissions. UK,
depending on the university, requires entrance exam scores.
How long does the application process take?
It takes around 2.5 months for the entire process. From the
time of application, to the offer letter it takes around 4-8 weeks,
depending on the university. Conformation of enrollment takes
around a week, 20-25 days for a visa.
Radio Jockeying – Making Waves
Gajendra Goswami
Although the radio industry in India is very
old, it has gained tremendous popularity only
in the last few years and the profession of a
Radio jockey has witnessed an immense boost.
RJing as a career has great scope for progress
and guarantees fame and praise. If you're not a
9-5 job person, are creative, passionate about
music, have a way with people and a flair for
communicating, then a career as a Radio
Jockey might just be the right choice for you.
An RJs job is a thrilling one and offers
opportunities to meet various artists and
celebs. Even though the success rate depends
entirely on the RJ himself, the career prospects
for an RJ are vast and vivid. Its job profile
offers plenty of money, fame and recognition.
Many RJs have alternate careers as event
anchors and comperes. Many companies also
hire RJs to do voice-overs for their radio
advertisements. Apart from these, an RJ has his
own set of audience and fan-flair.
An RJ’s job essentially requires creativity
and ability to grasp the attention of audience
when they speak, apart from which the right
attitude towards the job is compulsory. It
doesn't necessarily demand high education
qualification but, mandates a good sense of
humor and a rational viewpoint. It is a prerequisite for an RJ to have a high aptitude,
suitable voice for broadcasting and
immaculate overall personality and
confidence. It is notable that RJs can't afford
glitches or errors as there are no retakes on
radio shows unlike television and Film. Apart
from these evident qualities good linguistic
skills remains the key to becoming an able and
efficient Radio Jockey. The radio industry is a
skill based industry and it requires discrete
natural abilities.
There are several institutes in our country
that offer specialized courses that guide one to
become a successful RJ. Although many RJs
today have never gone through any formal
training, these courses lay great emphasis on
confidence building and might just carve out
your natural caliber to become an RJ. A lot of
critical work goes on before the show airs. The
scriptwriting, initial research and ensuring that
the show runs smoothly also entirely depends
on the RJ as well, formal training may boost
your chances. A course teaches the ABCD of a
Radio Jockey's profile and voice projection,
modulation, inflection and other skills to be a
master of the art.
In India the following institutions offer
certified courses to fulfill your dream to
become a successful RJ.
· Radio City School of Broadcasting,
Mumbai
· Indian Institute of Mass Communication,
New Delhi
· Xavier Institute of Communications,
Mumbai
· Jamia Millia Islamia , New Delhi
· The Mudra Institute of Communications
(MICA), Ahmedabad
The radio industry in India is inflating. After
the Phase-II Policy introduced in 2005 was
well received, Phase-III Policy extends FM
Radio Channels in 227 new cities, in addition
to the present 86 cities, with a total of 839 FM
Radio Channels in 294 cities. This clearly
indicates the vast audience it will reach out to,
with FM Channels in all cities with the
population of one lakh and above.
“An RJ is never out of job” confesses Noyel
Keymer, who is in the business since 1999.
Noel is faculty in Radio Jockey at Xavier's
Institute of Communication, Amity University
and Whistling Woods International, Mumbai.
His flamboyance shouts aloud that Radio
Jockeying might be a job of the future, at least
in India. There are plenty of opportunities in
the Radio industry and they are calling
confident personalities. People looking for
some exposure in Media arts can definitely
propel in an initiative to try become an RJ.

What does Kriti Sanon
miss about Delhi?
Young actress Kriti Sanon may be in a very happy space because of the way
her career has been shaping up, but there is one thing that the actress truly
misses.
She misses eating street side Golguppas. Kriti, who was born and brought up
in Delhi, used to love eating Golguppas from the street side in her locality along
with all her friends. It had almost become a routine for the young actress to go
and grab a plate of a golguppa along with her gang of friends.
Now, and especially here in Bombay, it is not very easy for her to step down
and visit a street side eatery. According to the actress, the entire feel and fun to
binge on a plate of golguppas carries a different pleasure to it all together!
She is very fond of chaat and prefers relishing it from a road side eatery
instead of eating in a restaurant. Kriti Sanon who has made it on her own in
Bollywood truly has lived a story of fairytale. With her debut film performing so
well at the box office, the actress will soon be seen in Rohit Shetty's next titled
“Dilwale” opposite Varun Dhawan.
Shraddha Kapoor receives
her best compliment
Shraddha Kapoor recently met Hema Malini at an event in Mathura. The two
bonded over many things. The duo infact had a lovely interaction where they
discussed dance, films, and the industry at large.
During the conversation Hema Malini told
Shraddha how she is the 'new dream girl.'
Shraddha was absolutely speechless. The young
actor got one of her best compliments in the
most unexpected manner. It took Shraddha a
moment to register, accept and thank Hemaji for
the compliment.
Shraddha was elated to be called the new
dream girl by Hema Malini herself. Later in the
day, Shraddha could not contain it and called her
mom Shivangi to tell her about the incident.

“I HAVE BEEN IN THE INDUSTRY FOR 9 YEARS NOW,
BUT I AM STILL FINDING MY PLACE”
- Mimoh Mimoh, the proud son of legendary Mithun Chakroborthty is all geared up to
prove his acting prowess in his forthcoming film 'Ishqedariyan.' Having learnt his
lessons in the industry the hard way, he has a candid chat with Kritika Sharma
about himself...
Describe yourself in one word...
Complicated
Was acting your first love or there was something else?
I always wanted to become an astronaut. I loved knowing about the whole
galaxy. I never thought of becoming an actor.
How did acting happen?
Acting happened when I was in the US doing my Astronomical degree course. I
was signed for an internship in NASA. I had summer vacations so I thought of
doing a one-month crash course and got myself enrolled in New York Film
Academy. When I started that course, I felt that this is something that I am good
at. It gave me a lot of confidence and that is why I pursued it.
Being the son of legend Mithun Chakroborthy, how was it when you
entered the industry?
When I entered the industry, people had a lot of expectations from me because
of my dad. But eventually I was criticized a lot. But I think everybody has to be
grilled and I was grilled the right way. I learned a lot and now I have become
more humble and patient.
According to people, a star kid always has an easy entry in the
industry. How true is that?
I have been in the industry for 9 years now, but I am still finding my place. I think
it's wrong what people think because everybody enters this industry with their
own destiny. For some it doesn't take so long, but it took me 9 years maybe
because it was just not my time.
Who is your role model?
Hrithik Roshan
Your first good remarks were by whom and what?
It was from my friends. They said that I have a lot of caliber and it's just that I
haven't prepared myself the right way. They always said that if I am given a
chance with the right approach and right sort of publicity, they would definitely
see me more on screen.
Your worst criticism...
It was when someone said that a junior artist is a better actor than me.
Your highest and lowest points in life...
My best time is right now because I feel sound and mature in terms of acting. I
have also become more responsible. My lowest point was in the initial stages
when I used to make a mess of everything. I had a bit of over confidence and
didn't know the difference between right and wrong. But today I believe that I
am rising only because of those downfalls.
How was the experience of acting with your father?
Working with him was a great experience. I enjoyed it thoroughly. There was a
little pressure as well because usually you are performing in front of a senior but
then he was my father. He may not be judging me at that point of time but I used
to believe that he would judge me. Luckily, I pulled out the one scene really well
which we had together in that film. He was quite impressed. So it turned out to
be a golden moment for me.
Current plans...
Right now, until May 15 I am eating, drinking and breathing just one movie
'Ishqedariyan.' It is going to be my finest project till date. I have been very
confident throughout the film. I am really excited about it.

INNER PEACE
the way to bliss!
A way from confusion to reality
In today's world, you will find plenty of
people complaining that they are
confused about things and situations
and because of this feeling, they feel
stuck in life. To get out of confusion,
we first need to understand what is
confusion and how we create it. Once
we are aware about it, then it
becomes very easy to get out of it and
gain clarity.
What is confusion? A situation in
which people are uncertain about
what to do or are unable to
understand something clearly. Why
do people get into such situations?
They get into them because they are
unable to make positive decisions or
not take ownership to make a positive
decision or belief about themselves.
We can't control the environment –
the only person we have control over
is ourselves. As change is only
constant, the environment or
conditions keep changing and
because the decision is made
accordingly, it also feels incorrect as
the change occurs.
For example, in a scenario where
you are believing you are unloved,
and you want to believe you are loved
but not making a decision or believing
you are loved, look outside for people
to love you in a way you believe you
are loved. Till the time the person is
behaving in the same manner, you
believe you are loved. The time the
opposite person behaves in some
other manner for whatever reason,
you start believing you are unloved
again. In this situation, your belief
about you are loved is depending on
the other person and the condition of
how he behaves and so it keeps
veering from time to time. You might
believe you are loved at times and
unloved at other times.
In the same scenario, if you have
the clarity and believe that you are
wonderful and loved always, then no
matter what the other person does or
the situation is, you will always feel
loved because you are not dependent
on the other person for making a
decision for you, or a belief that you
are loved and wonderful. The same
goes for all positive decisions you

make about yourself as your outer
world is a reflection of the inner world.
When you aren't clear about
yourself, it keeps giving you
experiences to match the unclear
beliefs and once you clear, it even
gives you the clear experiences. Now
how to get clarity? Whenever you are
confused, pay attention and
understand what you are feeling.
What is the present belief you have
about that situation or yourselves?
When you get the clarity of that, you
even get the clarity of that, which you
don't want to believe about yourself.
Once you get clarity about what you
don't want to believe about yourself,
at the same time, it becomes easy to
even understand what you do want to
believe about yourself. Once you get
the clarity of what you want to believe
about yourself, then just make that as
your decision and belief and stick to it.
Your experience will change with that
belief naturally. Enjoy the path from
confusion...to clarity.
Painful expressions say it all...
Shaili Madan
Painful as it might feel, piercing a hole through the skin and
inserting a piece of metal, bone, shell, ivory or glass, to be worn
as an ornament has been around for a millennia. Body piercing
is a worldwide fad followed by men, women and children. This
trend has sky rocketed since the past five years, especially
among teenagers who pierce just about anything like their
eyebrows, navel, tongue, lips, nipples and other genital parts.
Body piercing has been practised for as long as five
thousand years. Talking about its origination, bellybutton rings,
tongue piercing and nipple piercing is stated to have originated
in the Middle East almost 4000 years ago. From there it spread
to India in the 16th century, where it was quickly adopted by
the noble class. It has, in the beginning, as it is now, been used
as a personal expression, a religious ritual, an official, or royal
distinction or more often recently, a trend in fashion.
Contrary to the popular trend, girls with tongue. Bellybutton
or other body parts pierced, are at times chastised and publicly
humiliated or may be stereotyped as hippies or freaks. A body
piercing freak says, “I have always liked piercing. They strike
me as oddly flattering and delicate, a way to draw attention to
the beauty of the body. Piercing, like clothing, expresses
personality. It takes style to carry off piercing and self-esteem
to wear with pride. Neither of these things should be
discouraged, particularly among the youth.”
Like body piercing, body tattooing has been practiced in
varied cultures for many centuries starting from the Egyptians
era from 4000 – 2000 B.C. The Egyptians identified tattooing
with fertility and nobility. Later o in medieval ages, it was used
by Rajputs to identify strength. Till today teenagers use it as a
way to identify with liberalisation.
Tattooing today has extended to various parts of the body
like the lower and upper back, chest, arms, naval, lips and also
close or on private parts. Neil, a resident of Lokhandwala states,
“I always wanted a tattoo for as long as I can remember. But I
never knew what I wanted and it took my forever to find my
design. I would think about it for days on end, and always came
up with something different, but never something that
conveyed my true feelings. One day I finally found the one I
wanted and it was an expression of my feelings. I have to say
that my first experience was not the most painful I have ever
experienced, but it was long and irritating. I knew I had chosen
the right design, so the pain factor was not even a factor when I
thought about the beautiful design on my body. Basically the
moral of the story is to find a design that means something to
you!”
Though a number of youth succumb to the new fashion and
trends, they must be equally aware of the serious health
concerns these trends may sometimes lead to. Any procedure
that penetrates the dermis and epidermis such as tattooing and
body piercing carry a risk for certain infectious diseases.
Unsterilized tattooing and piercing equipment and needles can
spread serious infection like Hepatitis, Tetanus or possibly even
HIV. Tattoos are not easy to remove and in some cases may
cause permanent discoloration. Scarring, swelling, infections,
discharges, skin thickening, allergic reactions and other
complications may occur if procedures are done incorrectly or if
the skin is not cared for properly.

The oakroom is divided in to two parts internal and external. The
complete space is beautifully done up - the indoors section screams of
elegance and vintage, with cream-coloured tufted plush armchairs, lending
an old-world Brit ambiance to the restaurant. Opulent lights, extremely
structured sofas, and an illuminated wine rack all adds to the charm of the
place.
The exterior area is courtyard like area, which to some extent is more
contemporary in decor, with an al fresco seating, complete with yellow
walls and comfortable garden wicker chairs looking as fresh as a summer's
day. The best part was that the entire area was glass panelled and air
conditioned, allowing the daylight to seep in - perfect for the hot summers
and lunch dates making it quite an ambience.
The menu is classic and has covered almost leading Indian and
Continental cuisines. Executive Chef Mahtab Ansari has created
outstanding menu to cater to every one.
The most sought after and popular dishes among non vegetarian includes
Roast chicken with beer gravy, pan seared basa, chicken poached in
Malabari masala and South Indian style lamb nalli.
The vegetarian lovers also have vided varieties. The popular and most
sought after dishes are focaccia and emmental cheese, baked spring
vegetable risotto, vegetable korma in lemon grass sauce and assorted
vegetables kofta in spicy tomato gravy.
If you are cricket lover and want to watch IPL match on large screen
television in the restaurant than, not to forget their specially conceptualised
IPL Menu, the paneer (cottage cheese) starters is really great. Their prawns
in raw mango curry and Goan fish curry is an absolute hit and not to be
missed.
The Oakroom is frequented by known celebrities celebrities like John
Abraham, Sherlyn Chopra, Dipti Naval, Kailash Kher, Sushma Seth, Rajpal
Yadav. The South Indian stars who visit oakroom includes Surya and Arjun
Sarja to name few.
Executive Chef Mahtab Ansari says
“Our all day dining restaurant Oakroom,
where one cannot just enjoy a power
breakfast or a multi-cuisine meal but also
enjoy a quiet afternoon reading a book or
surfing the net with a 24 hour wireless
internet connectivity. It serves as a perfect
dining option for meetings, hang-outs or
even a midnight snack. If you’re in for a
romantic fine dining meal, you can
experience it at the high-end outside dining
area enclosed with see thru glass and airconditioned enhancing its exquisite
elegance. We have created our both
Continental and Indian menus keeping in
mind the people of our neighbourhood and city. This is the place to
experience the magic of classic ambience coupled with gracious hospitality
adding charm to your wonderful evenings”.

Dehumidifier for Art Galleries
An art museum or gallery generally consists of an exhibition space with
art objects, sculptures, furniture, textiles, drawings, pastels, watercolours,
collages, prints, artistic books, decorative arts, costumes, metal art forms &
photographs. Humidity is a major concern in order to safeguard and protect
the art work against the presence of increased moisture in the environment.
Increase in the moisture content could lead to deterioration of the art work,
papers and canvases. Change in the temperature and relative humidity can
cause the material to corrode, swell or warp and lose its value thus degrading
the value of the art work. Preservation of these art works from the harsh
humidity issues are a major concern for all art galleries. Dehumidifiers for
preservation of these art works are the best solution to solve these problems.
AMFAH Dehumidifiers are the most effective way of controlling the
relative humidity level at art galleries & museums. Using this Dehumidifier
for art galleries and preservation of the art work is very convenient and
hassle free. It helps to protect from the growth of mold, mildew and dust mites
due to excessive moisture in the air. These dehumidifiers help to eradicate
dampness caused by increase in relative humidity; it protects the art work
from getting degraded. It can set the environment humidity to the right level
thus protecting the art work at all time. Setting the right level of humidity in an
art gallery is a must in
order to restrict the
wooden and metal
artifacts from
developing black
spots thus making
them brittle.
Condensation on the
canvas can lead to
fungal growth thus
eroding the paintings
and discolouration of
the same. AMFAH
Dehumidifier fits in
best to protect from all
these humidity issues

Bhais were high on
style quotient
The crudeness of their vocation stood in sharp
contrast to their lifestyles. Criminals, yes, but Mumbai's
gangsters were social climbers and achievers in their
own right, and leaders of men. They were never wary of
flaunting that status.
They lived it up, matching lifestyle with stature. It
was difficult to miss the flashes of the understated yet
elegant don Vito Corleone (of The Godfather), the loud
yet sleek Tony Montana (in Scarface) and the abrasive
yet flamboyant Vijay, played by Amitabh Bachchan, in
Agneepath, in our earlier dons. Swanky cars, posh
houses, beautiful arm candy, preferably movie stars, and
all such trapping of high life, it was all par for the course.
Abdul Karim Khan aka Karim Lala's penchant for
the good life was no secret. The tall and handsome man
looked every inch the Pathan he was in his ethnic suits;
he was equally presentable in Western clothes.
A regular at Bollywood parties, he cherished his daily
quota of Black Label scotch and 555 cigarettes. His
charming ways did not make him out of place in the
celebrity circle, and he had some real big names to boast
of as friends in the glamour world. Actors Dilip Kumar
and Feroze Khan were just some them. However, despite being passionate
about Hindi movies, he never patronised the industry. The association was
more about the presence, the feeling of being equal to the high and the mighty.
The whites he wore did not quite go with the activities Haji Mastan indulged
in, but he made a style statement strong enough to be imitated in several movies
like the Bachchan-starrer Deewar later on.
The chain-smoking Mastan moved around in a sleek chauffeur-driven
Mercedes and was rarely seen minus his designer white dresses. Unlike Karim
Lala, he was involved in the movie business and is known to have financed a
movie with his girlfriend in the female lead. He even gifted her a bungalow
near Dev Anand's house. A big fan of Madhubala and Zeenat Aman, his
acquaintances included some Bollywood A-listers and political figures.
His contemporary, Dharavi don Munnaswamy Varadarajan Mudaliar aka
Vardabhai, too loved his whites and looked the perfect South Indian
businessman in his safari suits. A hero among the Tamil community, he loved
parties and hosted many of them.

Carving out
impressionable minds
It is a spiritual law that whatever is focused upon increases; we
'sow what we reap.'
Love it, hate it – the fact is that
television and the Internet are here to
stay. Do you remember a time before
the Internet? I do. And this is pretty
much word for word what grownups
said about kids back then.
As for television, today my home
receives hundreds of channels (not
necessarily watchable content).
There are a large number of us who
strongly believe that the old days of
television promoted a safer world for
children who watched perhaps one
movie a week and some cartoons,
rather than feast themselves on a
Bruce Willis mouthing expletives
while shooting 44 or more terrorists
in less than a minute. There are,
however, other opinions which say
that the proliferation of television
channels and access, are a great
medium for learning. This also is true
since the kids of today certainly seem
much better connected to current
affairs, general knowledge and the
global village.
So where lies the balance? Can
we really blame television or the
Internet for teaching our kids
violence? I suspect that just like in
the old days, where a good book
would teach a kid about good things
and hateful book would teach them
about hate. Television for kids is also
about discipline and control.
Whereas, the Internet is a fantastic
tool and like any tool people can
misuse it...like for example a knife is
a tool that can be misused!
On average, urban children watch
more than twenty hours of television
per week. Thus, there are many
opportunities for children to see
violence on TV. How much impact
TV has on children depends on many
factors: how much they watch, their
age and personality, whether they
watch alone or with adults, and
whether their parents talk with them
about what they watch on television.
While a direct 'cause and effect'
link is difficult to establish, is it likely
that some children may be
vulnerable to violent images and
messages they see on TV?
Absolutely! But not all violence
shown on TV is in films – the daily
news and Internet is so full of it that,
unless filtered by parents, it may
have a more severe effect on kids –
especially since it is reality.
It is a spiritual law that whatever
is focused upon increases; we 'sow
what we reap.' Hence, violence
begets violence: fear begets fear: and
the dismal word depicted on the
Premier, Varada bore a close
resmblance to the lead character
in Mani Ratnam's Tamil hit Baljeet Parmar
Nayakaan, later made into
Dayavan in Hindi. The movie is
believed to be screen adaptation of his life. Ruthless to
his opponents and a god-fearing man to his followers, he
used to organise a massive Ganeshotsav near the
Matunga railway station. Bollywood bigwigs, including
Amitabh Bachchan, were regulars at his pandal.
GenNew gangster Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar, the man
who rewrote all rules of the gangland to build his crime
empire, combined the style quotient of all the earlier
dons. He, too, loved the colour white; his mansion in
Dubai was named White House; he owned a white Rolls
Royce; smoked white Cartier cigarettes; and always
carried a white Cartier lighter. The pen he carried was a
Cartier, also white in colour. A big fan of Armani suits in
the later days, Dawood loved gambling and was a
regular visitor to casinos in Monte Carlo and London.
He loved the company of the big and the famous,
particularly those from the cricket and the movie world,
and that he hosted lavished parties for them in Dubai is well-documented. He
was a night bird and enjoyed mujras and other dance shows in Dubai in the
company of his famous friends. He was discreet about his political associations
but is understood to have a huge clout in the power circle.
Though he avoided drinks, he is a chain smoker. “Liquor is haram in Islam,
so I do not touch it,” he once said.
Dawood's pal-turned-foe Chhota Rajan, not as classy as his elders in the
trade, was however, a quick learner. He was fussy about his looks, rather
fascinated by it, and kept looking at himself for hours in the huge mirror he had
put up in his office in Dubai. In the aftermath of the 1993 Mumbai blasts, Rajan
left Dawood and Dubai and settled down in Malaysia where he hired private
tutors to teach him read and speak English.
Chhota Shakeel, Dawood's chief lieutenant, however, failed to grow
beyond his uncouth and rustic image. Dagdi don Arun Gavli remains an
introvert and poor conversationalist, with little hint of style or grace, a far cry
from the image of flamboyant the mafia bosses elsewhere in the world.
news and Internet is fast becoming a
self-fulfilling one. Television
programs rely heavily on the
dynamic duo of action and violence
to attract audiences. According to
one estimate, by the time most
children leave primary school, they
will have seen approximately 8000
murders and more than 100,000
other acts of violence on television.
Such staggering numbers have
contribute to a growing public
perception that not only has this
depiction of violence become more
pervasive, but that they way in which
the violence is portrayed openly
suggests that violence is the best or
the only way to resolve interpersonal
conflicts.
Another linked issue is about the
depiction of the negative
consequences of a violent act – both
in the punishment and in its timing.
Children are definitely susceptible to
believing that crime / violence pays
if the punishment is not depicted or
comes much later.
To leave this argument here
would be completely unfair to
television or for that matter any
medium of communication. The
ultimate responsibility of a child's
learning rests fairly and squarely on
the parents. It is your assessment and
control of what they see, and more
importantly the messages they take
away from what they see, that will
eventually decide their attitudes
about violence.

Dear Editor,
Read your editorial on how you got
Sanjay Dutt arrested and I have an
opinion about that. It has been
observed that these celebrities easily
commit crimes and go scot-free.
Even Salman Khan is running away
from what he has done. Even Sanjay
Dutt, after getting arrested, he keeps
coming out from jail on furlough.
Why are these people not treated
equally as the others? I don't know
when is the time going to come that
law will be equal for both celebrities and common man.

Meditation – the term may seem interesting to some while
boring to others. For those who may find it dreary, may at
once conjure up the picture of a bearded man sitting cross
legged in front of an entrance to a cave or a high on a
mountain top. However, meditation today is not only
confined to mountain tops, but it has indeed formed an
integral part of each of our lives, though most haven't
awakened to it as yet.
Meditation is one of the most important components of
Yoga, which is a mind-body therapy involving a series of
exercises. The word 'meditation' covers many practices
from visualizing situations, focusing on objects or images,
thinking through a complex idea, or even getting lost in a
provocative book, all qualifying as meditation in the broad
sense. However, in yoga, meditation generally refers to the
more normal practice of focusing the mind and observing
oneself in the moment. Simply put, meditation is designed
to carry us beyond conclusions created by our thoughts and
senses so that we are able to experience everything in its
truest form. Therefore, it is a focusing of the mind on a
single object so as to create a cessation of all thought. As
thoughts dissipate, the mind becomes quiet and devoid of
all distractions, and we are able to exist completely in the
present moment. Practiced to its advanced stages,
meditation is contented to be the means of achieving the
exalted state of enlightenment or supreme self realization.
The techniques of meditation are simple and easy to
learn, though the ability to keep the mind focused takes
time, patience and practice. And while few reach the exalted
state, meditation confers many benefits along the way. The benefits of practicing
meditation regularly, include reduction of stress, tension, anxiety and frustration
as well as improved memory, concentration, inner peace and physical well being.
Meditation has also proven to be highly effective treating psychological
conditions such as obsessive compulsive disorders, depression, schizophrenia
and anxiety.
Follow the following steps for yogic meditation;
• Sit in a comfortable position, either cross legged on the floor or in a chair. Sit
up tall with the spine straight, the shoulders relaxed and the chest open.
• Rest the hands on the knees with the palms facing up. Lightly touch the
index finger to the thumb.
• Relax the face, jaw and belly. Let the tongue rest on the roof of the mouth.,
just behind the front teeth. Allow the eyes to lightly close.
Meditate for a sound mind, body and soul

• Breathe slowly, smoothly and deeply in and out through the nose. Let the
inhale start in the belly and then rise gently up into the chest. As the breath slows
and deepens, let go of any thoughts or distractions and allow the mind to focus
on the breath. Feel the breath as it moves in and out of the body, feeling it move
through the nose, throat, windpipe and lungs.
• Feel the body as it rises and falls with each breath. Bring as much of your
awareness and attention to your body and breathe as possible with each
moment. As the thoughts return to the mind, let them go, and return the focus
back to the body and the breath.
• Practice this meditation for 10-20 minutes. To end, gently let the eyes blink
open, inhale the palms together in front of the heart, exhale and gently bow.
Take a moment or two before moving on with the rest of your day.
All this…for a sound mind, body and spirit…in just 15 minutes a day! Don't

Illness is the culminating result of various short and long-term hazards our body is prone to.
One of the many causes for illness is the accumulation of harmful toxins in the body.
Detoxification is the process of systematically eliminating these chemicals as part of the
healing process.
Over the course of time, detoxification has been established as a widely used treatment
and concept in alternative medicine. It is helpful for those suffering from unexplained
fatigue, allergies, bloating, menstrual problems, low-grade infections and mental problems.
It is a systematic process of the body's natural cleaning through resting the organs,
promoting elimination of harmful chemicals, improving circulation of the blood and
refueling the body with healthy nutrients. Professionals recommend everyone to detox at
least once a year. Detox can be carried out at hospitals, clinics or at home under supervision
of a medical professional.
Many toxins are stored in fat, which subsequently travel to different parts of the body
through bloodstream; thereby it is important to intake a lot of fluids to dispose them. Also,
restraining oneself from smoking, drinking, drugs, caffeine or anything which acts as toxins
and obstacles to your healing process. Minimal use of personal care products like shampoo,
deodorants, and cleansers is strictly recommended to accelerate detoxification.
Stress can be a significant health deterrent. It creates toxins in large amount and slows
down detoxification enzymes in the liver. Yoga, Qigong and Meditation are simple and
effective ways to relieve stress and reset mental and physical reactions.
There are many detoxification programs and recipes, depending on individual
requirements. Its can vary from two days to two weeks. “Detoxification needs strict
adherence more than anything. It requires a patient to go sugar free. It should be understood
that most of the food products we consume gets converted into sugar in our body, therefore
under a detoxification program, one must consume only veggies, seeds, healthy nuts and if
possible, a little fish as well,” explains Deepa Nandy, a certified nutritionist. “It is important
to restrain from dairy products and pro-biotics as well. Enough intake of water is the key to
detox. Some specialists also advise fasting for a day or two if possible. Yoga and exercise is
also a key to a successful detoxification process,” she continues.
Illness strikes without invitation and when it does, it strikes with rampage. So, don't wait
for illness to get hold of your body. Detoxify now and stay healthy. Remember, prevention is
better than cure.
Beat the back pain
You are a couch potato: Leaving your muscles untested and unstrengthened does no favors for your lower back. Get up every half hour or so if
you're binge-watching a show on Netflix and incorporate exercises like the plank
(hold 30 seconds or more for 2 to 3 sets) to strengthen your back and core.
You Smoke: Nicotine cuts down on healthy blood flow all around your body,
and that includes to your vertebrae and spinal discs. This can cause them to
break down, resulting in inflammation and pain.
You are depressed: The odds of having back pain were 1.6 times higher
for subjects with symptoms of depression and anxiety. Stress can cause
enormous muscle tension in the lower back.
You overdo it with exercise: Too many repetitions or using heavy weights
can trigger back pain and stiffness. Normal muscle soreness usually goes away
the next day. But lingering pain bending down, twisting, or extending your back
that continues in the days after the workout should be evaluated by a medical
professional.
You have a urinary tract infection or kidney stones: UTIs can cause
bladder inflammation, which can cause abdominal pain that radiates to the
back. Kidney stones can also cause back pain when they block drainage of the
kidney.
You have an undiagnosed health problem: Back pain can also be a sign
of osteoporosis, an abdominal aneurysm, uterine or ovarian cancer in women
and even lung cancer. We can't always identify the specific reason for lower back
pain, but advanced techniques to diagnose the cause — such as x-rays, MRI or
CAT scans or other tests — give us a leg up toward getting our patients back to
pain-free living.

Keshav Suri, Executive Director at The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group
Andheri has one of the finest and most spacious new Night
Club namely Kitty Su, located in The Lalit hotel at Sahar.
Keshav Suri is Executive Director at The Lalit Suri Hospitality
Group. He is the brain behind ‘Kitty Su’ which has been
awarded as ‘Best Night Club’ in Delhi by Times Food and
Nightlife Awards three years consecutively. He is also
tasked for operations and management of the current
properties and is spearheading the new project, The Lalit
London.
Keshav is an alumnus of prestigious St. Columbus
School, New Delhi. He graduated in Law and Business from
the University of Warwick, has a Master’s Degree in
International Management from Kings College, London
followed by an LLM Degree from School of African &
Oriental Studies (SAOS), London. Before joining The Lalit
Suri Hospitality Group, he has worked at Standard
Chartered Bank and Unilever. In candid talk with Mewati
Sitaram
What made you launch kitty su in Mumbai?
I love Mumbai as it is a one of the finest global city of the
World. But whatever may be the reason, it lacking in good
night clubs. The people of Mumbai are really outgoing and
have money power to spend for their entertainment and
enjoyment. "I always wanted to start a club of my own, and
I always knew I’d call it Kitty Su. I have developed it as the
most exclusive place in Mumbai and certainly it would boast
of exclusive clientele, exclusive décor and alcohol too.
Earlier there used to be many night clubs which were very
poular but they became things of the past. This thought
process compelled me to think on that line and idea of kitty
Su emerged in my mind.
Who inspired you to open Kitty Su?
My family is a pioneer in hospitality industry known as
Lalit Suri group. Right from the childhhod I used to hear
conversation from my parents about hospitality industry in
my drawing room. Stalwarts of the global hospitality trade
used to visit our place to discuss various issues with my
father late Lalit Suri. At that point of time made me develop
interest in hotel industry. My parents were great visionary
and always wanted me to do astonishing in the life
professionaly. My mother Dr Jyotsana Suri inspired me to
know nuances of hospitality. This was main reason Kitty su
was born. My thought process was completely supported
by my mother.
Is starting a night club is just about music and
lights?
Starting a night club is not just about music and lights. It
requires management skills and need to do lot of
homework. One has to think various aspects like, how
about the bartenders? What about the DJ, his choice of
music, lights, and how about that volume? You need to
design your night club in accordance with the theme you
are going with and the target audience you are trying to
attract. It’s not “build it and they will come”.it’s not all about
what you want, or what you would like. It’s about what
concept will sell to your targeted customers. Once
operational, you need to talk to people. Are they having fun
in these places? What do they like? What do they dislike etc.
How it would be different in from other night
clubs?
The Lalit group always belives in things extraordinaire
and Kitty su will revolutionize the live music scene in this
city. Kitty su is a best place to evolve nightlife experience,
the place fuses of various elements -the dedicated surround
sound systems. It has plenty of glamour to offer, especially
at 3 a.m. when all the other drinking holes around Mumbai
have shut for the night. Walk in and you are enveloped into
a darkened world of decaying perfume and private tables
with spacious floor for dancing. At Kitty Su there is a
separate VIP area with a separate bar and personalized
service entertained by invitation only.
How many Kitty Su are operational?
Currently there are two Kitty Su operational, one in
Chandigarh and another in Delhi. Third one has opened its
door in Mumbai. We want to make it a pan India night club
and are planning to open in Bangluru and Kolkatta very
soon.
Uber launches Pune-Mumbai
InterCity services
Mumbai Messenger Correspondent
MUMBAI: Uber is steadily expanding it's wings in India –
On the Maharashtra Day weekend, they have, for the first
time, launched inter-city services. Called UberINTERCITY,
the service has been launched for travel between Mumbai
and Pune.
Since launch, Uber had been plying cars Intra-city
(within the city), but this is for the first time that they have
launched a service for travel between two cities. Sanil
Bhatia, Uber's Pune General Manager said, “We have
made this move since our launch in Pune. Our riders and
partner drivers have often asked us to connect the two
cities through our app. We are excited to present
uberINTERCITY, which further strengthens our
commitment to building an efficient, seamless and
sustainable urban mobility network between
Maharashtra's financial and industrial hubs at the push of
a button.”
The service will work, just like normal services. The
users will just need to pick uberINTERCITY rather than
normal UberGo or UberX. Unlike based-on-distance
pricing, the Pune-Mumbai or vice-versa ride rate will be
fixed at Rs. 3999/-. Like in the normal rides, the app will
have Send Status and SOS Button for safety of
passengers.

PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar
20): An unexpected
expense, perhaps
requiring repairs to the house or
car, might take a chunk out of your
bank account. This may be
disheartening for you. You've
worked hard for your money and
now you might have to put some of
your plans on hold. Still, you need
to be philosophical about it. Take
care of it and move on.
ARIES (March 21 to April
20): Career changes may
be on the horizon.
Although positive in the long run,
the events leading up to the
change may seem catastrophic.
Your employer could go out of
business or move too far away for
you to commute. The secret here
is not to panic. You will probably be
glad that this happened. Success
and good fortune are coming.
TAURUS (Apr 20 – May
20): Pay attention to your
dreams. They're likely to
be interesting! If possible, write
down your impressions the
moment you wake up. After a few
days you can review your notes
and you may be surprised by what
they reveal. You're in the mood for
a major change in your life, and
your dreams may point you in the
right direction.
GEMINI (May 21 – Jun
20) : Changes within a
group you're affiliated
with might profoundly affect you.
Perhaps the group is veering in a
new direction that doesn't
particularly interest you. You might
need to re-evaluate your
involvement. This could make you
rather sad since you've grown fond
of the people and won't want to
lose them as friends. Only you can
decide what to do.
CANCER (Jun 21 – Jul
22): You've been working
hard lately and your body
needs time to refuel. Spend some
quiet time at home. Curl up at
home and let your mind travel
where it may. Even though your
body slows, your mind is more
active than ever. This would be a
fruitful time to strategize creative
changes you'd like to make at
home or work.
LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22):
Some rather shocking
news could come to you
from a friend. This probably won't
affect you directly, as it most likely
concerns the world economy, or
big business, but you still might
worry about its long-term effects
on society and you. You could
discuss it with friends. You need to
remain objective. It might be less
serious than it seems.
VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sep
22): A dip in the stock
market might cause you
to worry about your own financial
future. You may have some
investments that could be
temporarily negatively affected.
Bear in mind that such events don't
necessarily reflect trends. Take
steps to create some kind of safety
net if you wish, but don't assume
the worst. The market could go
back up.
LIBRA (Sep 23 – Oct 22):
You might find that some
of your ambitious plans
finally seem to be paying off. You
should be happy about this, but
you might panic a bit, fearing that
everything could crash at the last
minute. Don't assume the worst
and don't waste your energy
worrying. Keep striving! You've
gotten this far. With a little effort,
all should go well.
SCORPIO (Oct 23 – Nov
21): If you've been doing
some creative or jobrelated writing, you might be tired,
blocked, and unable to muster the
energy to turn on the computer.
You need to ask yourself how
important it is to get it done. It's far
better to wait another day and do it
well than grind out something that
is not up to your standards.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22
– Dec 21): A project of
some kind you've been
working on could be going well,
Sagittarius, but today you might
experience a sudden rush of
inspiration that makes it a lot
better than you originally
envisioned. This could involve
effort that seems intimidating at
first, but the results should be
worth it. Summon all your energy
and determination and get to it.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 –
Jan 19):A family member
could be experiencing
business difficulties. Your
sensitivity could cause you to feel
their anxieties. You might want to
make it clear to this person that
you're there for him or her, but you
also need to be objective about the
situation. Protect yourself by
surrounding yourself with white
light. It won't help your relative if
you're stressed.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 –
Feb 18) : A friend or
relative could be ill, out of
work, or otherwise beset by
problems. You may want to do
whatever you can to help out. This
could be frustrating, but you will
feel better for having done what
you can. This person needs to face
and deal with his or her
responsibilities. They're out of your
control to fix.
