 Masterpiece Living FAQ Who is Masterpiece Living? Masterpiece Living (MPL) is a multi-­‐specialty group committed to changing the aging experience and perception of aging. This is achieved by building strong partnerships with like-­‐minded aging field organizations to maximize the potential of older adults, thereby enriching lives, enhancing cultures and enlightening a nation. What is Masterpiece Living? Masterpiece Living (MPL) is an initiative that began as a direct descendant of the MacArthur Foundation’s research on aging. MPL provides a comprehensive support system that promotes successful aging. This support includes exclusive resources and expertise necessary to create organizational cultures that promote healthy lifestyles shown by research to result in a successful aging experience. MPL’s data-­‐driven, holistic approach and emphasis on resiliency achieves dramatic, measurable outcomes. Is Masterpiece Living a program? No. While Masterpiece Living utilizes special programs to support its successful aging initiative, it is not a program. The MPL initiative is about changing the way in which we view and treat older adults in our community and empowering older adults to continue to grow physically, intellectually, socially and spiritually. What is Masterpiece Living’s affiliation with the Mayo Clinic? The Mayo Clinic is one of MPL’s partners. MPL provides tools and resources from the Mayo clinic, and integrates their expertise into the MPL initiative. Based on a 10-­‐year landmark study by the MacArthur Foundation, we now know that 70% of physical aging and approximately 50% of mental aging is determined by the lifestyle choices that we make every day. We are not resigned to accept a life of steady decline as we age. Instead, aging can be a time of growth if we maintain our physical and mental skills, reduce our risk for disease and injury, and stay productive and engaged with life. What do you mean by the “four components of successful aging"? Continual focus and growth intellectually, socially, spiritually and physically means we are more likely to age successfully. What Research supports Masterpiece Living? As a direct descendant of the MacArthur Foundation’s 10-­‐year research on aging, MPL has spent more than 15 years bringing this research to life and has worked directly with industry leaders and experts. MPL continually uses Lifestyle Reviews to collect and measure data. Today, as a result of continuous development and evolution, MPL is partnered with more than 70 organizations and is committed to creating a better aging experience for all. What are Data Revelations? Data Revelations are the result of studying and analyzing all of the successful aging data collected from the Masterpiece Living network by way of measurement tools called the Masterpiece Reviews. Having these scientifically validated tools and one of the largest successful aging databases, Masterpiece Living and its partners are compelled to contribute to the existing body of knowledge in the aging and health promotion field with the ultimate goal of changing the mainstream perceptions of aging and influencing public policy. What do you mean when you say, "we're changing public policy"? The United States is an aging society, a society in which older men and women are increasing in numbers and proportion. Current policies and institutions have not yet adapted to these demographic changes. Relevant research can provide www.mymasterpieceliving.com evidence upon which to base public policy that will optimize life quality and reduce costs. Is Masterpiece Living research or evidence-­‐based? MPL uses a research-­‐based lifestyle approach and provides measurable tools for individual lifestyle evaluation, feedback, and intervention coaching, organization cultural interventions, and outcome data on parameters crucial to aging successfully. How does MPL benefit older adults of an organization? MPL Data Revelations continue to demonstrate the increase in resident engagement and overall life satisfaction and a decrease in disease and injury risks. Additionally, Masterpiece Living offers a voluntary and anonymous survey that asks recent move-­‐ins how important the successful aging lifestyle was in their decision to move into the community. Results from that survey reveal that for many older adults of MPL organizations all across the US, lifestyle is a key factor. What support/team member training do you provide to partners? Partners within the MPL Network have access, and are included, in ongoing data collection that measures and analyzes the four components of successful aging (Intellectual, Social, Physical and Spiritual). Partners are also provided with ongoing support materials for team member training, resident Lifestyle Reviews, Programs by Masterpiece, sales and marketing support and Purposeful Programming resources. Partners receive ongoing consultations with a MPL representative dedicated to their organization as well as support calls and monthly webinars. Learn more on our How It Works page. What does it mean to be a Certified Center for Successful Aging (CSA)? Center for Successful Aging (CSA) certifications are awarded to “best in class” among forward thinking, cutting edge leaders in the aging field who have implemented innovative policies and procedures that provide a unique culture of growth and empowerment for older adults, and have met all the criteria set by a team of experts in the aging profession. This designation sets CSAs apart as regional destinations for successful aging, and was awarded to two organizations in 2013 and six organizations in 2014. Established in 2008, the Masterpiece Academy is dedicated to providing expert guidance in the field of successful aging. Under the direction of Dr. Gobble, PhD, Director and Professor Emeriti, Fisher Institute for Wellness and Gerontology at Ball State University, the Academy synthesizes and distributes the most important information for your continuing educational needs in aging and health related services. The academy brings research to life through their Speaker’s Bureau, webinars, team member training, continuing education, data analysis, annual Lyceum and special Programs by Masterpiece. What are Programs by Masterpiece? Programs by Masterpiece are research-­‐ and education-­‐based campaigns that support the culture of successful aging.
