MID-SEMESTER REPORTS
Students will be bringing home their mid-semester report cards on Thursday, April 30th. If you have
any concerns about your student’s progress, please call any member of the administration or Mr. Rob
Poissant, the Guidance Chair.
As we draw closer to the end of the school year, we remind students that even though the weather is more conducive to being
outside, our classes continue until final evaluations June 18-24. There is still half the semester, with all related assignments and
evaluations of student performance to conduct, and final examinations/performance tasks worth 30% of the final mark to
complete before those summer holidays begin.
REPORTING OF STUDENT ABSENCES & LATES
It is very important that you notify our Attendance Office to report and verify your child's absences. You can notify
us in any of the following ways :
1. E-mail our Attendance Hotline at [email protected]
2. Call our Attendance Office at (705) 431-5950 Ext. 40281
3. Send a note to the Attendance Office.
4. If your child is going to be late please call the office and indicate what approximate time
they will be arriving and have them sign in at the office.
Extended Absences:
If your child is going to be away for an extended period of time, we require an Extended Absence form
to be completed PRIOR to the absence (where possible). Extended absences for all but medical reasons are strongly
discouraged, particularly at this point in the semester, but if unavoidable, parents/guardians are reminded that it is the student’s
and parents’ responsibility to get caught up on the work missed.

SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
The Special Education Department is reminding students with IEPs to talk to their teachers about June exams and
remind them of the accommodations that they would like. Examples of accommodations are; extra time, computer
use, Kurzweil reading program, Scribes (mainly for students in locally developed level classes), enlarged copies of
exams. If you have any further questions please talk to your Special Education Resource Teacher. Exam
accommodations must be discussed before June.
Also, students are reminded to use the resource room (room 120) if they need extra support in their classes for
tests, assignments or day to day work. Do not wait for a test before coming to get help.
GRADE 9 MATH EQAO ASSESSMENT-GRADE 9 ACADEMIC AND APPLIED
(SEMESTER 2)
On Tuesday, June 9 and Wednesday, June 10, students in grade 9 applied and academic
mathematics courses will be participating in the province-wide Grade 9 Assessment of
Mathematics.
This assessment, administered by Ontario’s Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO),
measures each student’s achievement against the expectations of The Ontario Curriculum. The
results show how each student performed in relation to the provincial standard. EQAO results
are an additional tool to help students, parents and schools evaluate student progress. They
provide valuable information that supports strategies for improving the quality of public education in Ontario.
NANTYR SHORES MENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVE
Nanty Shores is part of a mental health initiative within the Simcoe County District School Board. This year we have created a
Mental Health Team within the school and a Mental Health Plan to promote positive mental health and wellness amongst our
staff and students. As part of this initiative, Nanty Shores is celebrating Mental Health Awareness Week from May 4 to 11 and
we have organized various events and activities taking place within the school and with community mental health partners as
well.
On May 7th we will be having a dramatic presentation of a Canadian play written by Tom Slater, called “A Permanent
Solution.” This play uses characters in high school to discuss the issues of depression and suicide in teens. “A Permanent
Solution” brings to light the struggles, impact and danger of letting mental health problems continue without help and support
from friends, family and the community. It focuses on the benefit of talking about mental health problems and connecting with
others for support.
Following the presentation, students will participate in a classroom discussion about the production, mental health and school
and community supports. This guided discussion was created by The Suicide Awareness Council, the Canadian Mental Health
Association and the Upper Grand District School Board. The discussions will be led by teachers, guidance counsellors or
school/community mental health professionals. Additional supports will be available to students on an individual basis as
needed.
If you have any questions or concerns or if you would like more information about this presentation, please contact Liselle
Prickett at 705-431-5950 extension 40824.
EDUCATION WEEK – CELEBRATING PUBLIC EDUCATION
Education Week, May 4 to 8, is a province-wide celebration of student achievement and excellence in education. It

ECOs Updates
After years of hard work by staff, students and administration, the goals of the Claire Philp Memorial
Solar Panel Project have finally become realized. Installation began over the March Break and the
finishing touches continue into the Spring. Nantyr is proud to be home to the second largest solar panel
project in the County.
Each year, Nantyr Shores applies to be certified as an Ontario EcoSchool. As the only high school
participating in Simcoe County, Nantyr has been honoured to receive Silver recognition for the past four
years. We continue to strive for Gold as we improve in areas related to energy use, leadership, waste
minimization, school ground greening, stewardship and curriculum.
Recently, Busch Systems approached the School Board to become a community partner with a local high
school in order to deliver an improved waste management system. Of course, they were directed to
Nantyr where organics collection is already taking place and, with the new sorting stations, the success of
the program is sure to continue!
Lastly, please consider contributing to our Scrap Metal Drive. Donations can be made to the school in
support of the Enviroventure program and their annual trip to the White Mountains. The drive will continue
until the end of April.
GET READY TO GENERATE SOME EXCITEMENT!
The Simcoe County District School Board has partnered with AMP Solar Group and
Potential Solar to install solar panels on the rooftops of 41 schools across the County,
generating over 4 mW. The 41 schools were successful applications approved by the
Ontario Power Authority as part of the Feed In Tariff (FIT) program, producing renewable
energy to feed the provincial energy grid. As part of this partnership, students will be able
to monitor the energy produced at their school and compare it to other schools in the
County as well as other schools in Ontario. Students will have access to real data that can
be used in the classroom. Students will also have opportunities to engage in solar and
renewable energy workshops and presentations at their school. The preparation for
construction will commence March 11 and will be fully operational by the end of July. Revenue generated through this program
will be used to enhance environmental learning opportunities for staff and students and expand on energy conservation efforts
in our building. For more information, please contact the SCDSB Environmental Systems Coordinator, Jessica Kukac at 705734-6363 extension 11514.

INFORMATION FROM THE SIMCOE MUSKOKA DISTRICT HEALTH
UNIT REGARDING MEASLES
With the recent cases of measles in Ontario, the local public health unit is encouraging
parents to ensure their child’s immunizations are up to date. According to the Ontario
Ministry of Health, children who are in school should have received two doses of the
MMR (Measles, Mumps & Rubella) vaccine; the first dose after their first birthday and the
second dose at 4 to 6 years of age. Anyone born in 1970 or after should also ensure that
they have received two doses of the MMR vaccine. Those born before 1970 are
assumed to be immune as they were likely exposed to measles as a child.
According to the immunization records that the health unit currently has on file for all school age children in Simcoe
and Muskoka, about 85% of children have received two doses of MMR vaccine. It is important to notify the health
unit if your child receives immunizations at your health care provider so that their immunization record can be
updated at the health unit.
Measles is a contagious virus that spreads very easily from person to person through coughing, sneezing and even
talking. Symptoms begin with fever, runny nose, cough and red eyes followed a few days later by a red rash around
the face which spreads to the chest, arms and legs. Approximately 10% of people with measles will develop
complications such as ear infections, pneumonia or encephalitis, which can lead to seizures, deafness, mental
disabilities or death.
For more information, please visit the health unit’s website at www.simcoemuskokahealth.org or call Health
Connection at 705-721-7520 or toll free at 1-877-721-7520.

can choose child care that suits their family’s needs. It provides information about different types of care,
and indicators of quality in child care settings.

PACK A RAINBOW IN YOUR KID’S LUNCH!
The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit would like to remind parents
about the importance of a school lunch full of colourful veggies and
fruit. Try some of these tasty kid-friendly ideas to ensure they will eat
what you pack:
Add grated carrot to egg or tuna salad
Pack veggies or fruit in small bite size pieces for easy eating
Prepare veggies and fruit with different tools that change the shape and add interest to your child’s lunch.
Use melon ballers, vegetable crinkle cutters, cookie cutters or even an egg slicer to make some great
shapes. Use a shake of cinnamon on cut fruit if it tends to turn brown - they will enjoy the new flavour to
their favourite apple or banana pieces. If your kid is a dipper, add a small container of yogurt or pudding
for fruit dipping or cottage cheese or hummus for veggie dipping. For more information you can call
Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-5720 and speak with a public health nurse or visit the
health unit website at www.simcoemuskokahealth.org.
CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH WEEK
Children’s Mental Health Week is May 3 to 9. One in five Ontario children and youth struggle with mental
health concerns - that's about 500,000 kids. Children's Mental Health Week is about promoting positive
mental health, increasing the awareness of signs related to children and youth struggling with mental
health problems, decreasing stigma and understanding how to access community supports that are
available to improve well-being. For more information, visit http://www.kidsmentalhealth.ca/.
NOTICE TO STUDENTS AND LEGAL CUSTODIANS OF STUDENTS
REGARDING OUT OF AREA REQUESTS

Students will be permitted to continue in attendance as long as space is available. They may be required to
return to their home school or transfer to another school when the capacity of the school they are attending
has been reached and space is required for students residing within the attendance areas.
