2014-2015 NATIONAL SAVE
AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED!
SAVE CHAPTERS OF THE YEAR:
Cuthbertson High School (Waxhaw, NC)
Cuthbertson High School has been extremely active this year with plans to
accomplish a lot more before the end of the school year. They conducted
back to school safety activities, coordinated a school-wide anti-bullying
week, celebrated National SAVE Day, International Day, LGBT Marriage
Equality awareness, and International Day of Peace.They presented a session
at the SAVE Summit, conducted school wide 9/11 memorial activities,
received multiple grants, conducted a supply drive for the SAVE chapter in
Sierra Leone, created and shipped 157 dresses for Africa, conducted a food
drive for their county shelter, raised over $2000 for their homeless shelter,
organized multiple blood drives
and made valentine gift bags for
their domestic violence shelter.
Their SAVE Chapter is known for
giving back to their community
and addressing difficult violence
related issues. Great job!
Lockhart Elementary School (U.S. Virgin Islands)
Lockhart Elementary School SAVE Chapter is receiving the SAVE Chapter
of the Year Award for their outstanding dedication to SAVE and their
community.These young students presented their version of “Why Can’t We
Be Friends” at a community rally wih over 700 attendees. Each month they
create and present a message to share with their student body reminding
students to strive for peace and unity. They were active during No-NameCalling Week and Random Acts of
Kindness Week. Utilizing performing
arts, they sing, dance, role play, chant,
and recite poetry that focuses on peace
and nonviolence. Their advisor, JoAnne
Saunders, states, “students who once
could not get along together, now come
to the club as hand-holding friends, bringing new members with them every
day.” Great job Lockhart!

SAVE STUDENTS OF THE YEAR:
Courtney Leo Myers (White Oak High School, NC)
Leo is an enthusiastic, focused change agent against violence everywhere; especially
against the bullying of students who are gay, lesbian, and/or transgender. Leo successfully
leads club meetings along with many presentations
at the high school, middle school and elementary
school. Leo is a positive role model with a cando attitude. This transcends to students that, “it
is ok to be different.” Leo believes in SAVE and
incorporates the mission statement, mantras
and philosophies into everyday life and shares it
willingly with others. Assistant principal David
Anderson stated that “Leo has helped to shape
the SAVE Club on White Oaks campus. Today, it is
one of the most popular and active clubs on our campus. It is not a coincidence that
Leo has been the President of the club for two of those years.” Congratulations Leo!
Sydney Gilbert (Muckwonago High School, WI)
Since her freshman year, Sydney has worked tirelessly to promote and model the
objectives of SAVE. She has served as president of her chapter for two years and has
initiated numerous activities and campaigns to promote nonviolence and mitigate
bullying in her school district and community. Sydney initiated the first “True Beauty
Day,” which is a day to promote being ourselves
rather than focusing on the media’s views of
beauty. She is a strong believer in peer-to-peer
teaching and created multiple activities for the
chapter to utilize when working with their local
middle schools. Sydney played an integral role in
planning and conducting a large community event
called “Bullying: Declassified.” Sydney has become
the face of SAVE at her 1600 student high school.
She is looked to as a model and spokesperson and has brought several life-changing
initiatives to the high school, middle school and elementary school. Sarah Dianch
remarked that “Sydney is the most dedicated SAVE officer she has had in her nine
years as a SAVE Advisor. So much of her inspiration will be carried forward into future
years of SAVE.” Congratulations!
SAVE ADVISOR OF THE YEAR:
Officer Daisy Watson (Biloxi High School, MS)
Officer Daisy Watson is passionate about SAVE and everything that it stands for. She
is known as the glue for the Biloxi High School SAVE Chapter because she keeps
everything running smoothly. She encourages her students to put community and
safety of others first. Officer Daisy helped them organize a very successful toy drive
in accordance with the Biloxi Police Department called “Santa Wears a Badge,” which
allowed them to distribute over 1500 toys to children in the community. With her
guidance, the chapter promoted safe driving and drunk driving awareness by using
her contacts to set up DUI reenactments with real police, ambulances and the fire
department. Officer Daisy also cares about the cohesiveness of the club. They focus
on team building and building positive relationships.
Even with such a demanding job as SRO, she always
finds time to dedicate to the chapter.She has turned
the club into one of the biggest in the school. Under
her guidance the SAVE Chapter also hosted the
Mississippi Teen Safe Driving Workshop sponsored
by Allstate. Congratulations Officer Watson!
NATIONAL SAVE SUMMIT March 21, 2015
The National Youth SAVE Summit took place in Raleigh, North Carolina on March 21 and eight states were represented!
Youth traveled from near and far to particpate in workshops, peer-topeer presentations and activities that encouraged, educated, engaged
and empowered them with violence prevention strategies. Keynote
speaker Mike Hall inspired students to “live the life of a hero” and treat
others with kindness. Feature speakers included Angie Bynum, Gary
Weart and Laurie Schloff. We would like to thank all the workshop
presenters, volunteers, Board members and Youth Advisory Board
members for their hard work to make the Summit successful!
NATIONAL YOUTH VIOLENCE PREVENTION WEEK March 23-27, 2015
The goal of the National Youth Violence Prevention Campaign is to raise awareness and
to educate students, teachers, school administrators, counselors, school resource officers,
school staff, parents and the public on effective ways to prevent or reduce youth violence.
This week long national education initiative involved activities that demonstrated the positive
role young people can have in making their school and community safer. With the help of
partner organzations and schools nationwide, the hashtag #NYVPW trended on Twitter in
the United States during the week. Thank you to all who participated in National Youth
Violence Prevention Week. Remember, everyone can play a role in preventing youth violence!
Twenty Twinkling Stars Opportunity for SAVE Chapters
The National Association of Students AgainstViolence Everywhere
was selected by the Arbonne Charitable Foundation to receive
a grant to engage, empower, encourage and educate teens in
providing character education to younger students. Through
the grant, SAVE chapters will lead outreach to preschools,
kindergartens and first grade classrooms to provide lessons on
positive character traits, kindness, and bullying prevention.

Nino Sustache Scholarship - Application Deadline June 1, 2015
The Nino Sustache Scholarships are awarded to deserving high school graduates for living a life
of nonviolence and being positive role models through Students Against Violence Everywhere
(SAVE). Two graduating high school students (one living within 100 miles of Kenosha, WI) will
receive $1,000 to further their education. Both awards will be presented at the Nino Sustache
Memorial Golf Outing on August 9, 2015 in Kenosha, WI.

KnowBullying, a free smartphone tool, produced by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
Administration (SAMHSA), is designed to address the needs of children ages 3–18 and includes
discussion prompts for adults working with children who are bullied, who witness bullying or who bully

Monthly Focus: Bullying & Relationship Violence Prevention
SAVE members can strive to prevent bullying and relationship violence by educating
the public about warning signs, consequences and proactive steps to safeguard
possible victims. By approaching the program from three angles: crime prevention,
conflict management, and service projects, SAVE members can help thwart these
growing areas of violence. Bullying and relationship violence can cover many areas
including (but not limited to) child to child bullying, dating violence, child abuse,
sibling abuse, domestic violence, and interpersonal violence (e.g. between friends).
With April being National Child Abuse Prevention Month, bullying and relationship
violence prevention are perfect topics to address in your school and community.
