NDHSRA
AND
BOWMAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Dear High School Rodeo Queen Contestant:
The spring rodeo season is almost in full swing and before you know it, the State Finals will be here!!!
I’m sure you have already marked your calendars for June 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th. I look forward to
seeing you then!
There is a great team of ladies and gentleman that are busy making sure that the 2015 Rodeo Finals
event is the best ever!
This letter is to inform you of the rules and regulations of the NDHSRA Queen pageant, as well as to give
you some helpful hints. It is important that you have fun while competing for the title of Miss North
Dakota High School Rodeo Queen. Enjoy yourself!
The following are the categories in which you will be judged:
Modeling (1-25 points)
The modeling score will take into consideration the attire each contestant has chosen, as well as her
ability to model with poise, grace and confidence. She must effectively project her personality to the
audience and the judges. You will be modeling to the music of your choice, while information from your
application is being read. BRING YOUR MUSIC ON A CD, MARKED WITH YOUR NAME AND NUMBER
AND TITLE OF THE SONG.
These are some things to remember regarding modeling and your appearance:







Use sharp moves and show confidence.
Wear pantyhose under your clothing.
Simple touches may accent your outfit.
Be sure that your hat is clean, nails polished, boots shined, etc. If it is a close race, the judges
may have to look for all of these added details.
Use variety; dare to be different. This could apply to the speech category as well.
Be fussy about your hemline.
Be sure to include your rodeo competition number with your entry form so that I can have a
button made for you. You need to have this on while modeling and giving your speech.
Appearance (1-25 points)
You will be judges on how well you look in what you are wearing, as well as the appropriateness of your
actual attire. The judges will be looking for neatness, cleanliness, make-up application, hairstyle, and
basically how well put together your outfits are. Use your National book as a guide regarding attire.
Please note that during the Horsemanship competition, you will need BLUE DENIM JEANS WITH A
PLAIN WHITE COLLAR BLOUSE (no ruffles, accessories, tuxedo shirts, or other fancy styles allowed). Hat,
boots, and belt are a must, of course. Be sure to wear your rodeo number pinned to the back of your
shirt during this event (required).
During the Speech and Modeling competitions, you have the option to wear a suit, dress, skirt and
blouse. Note that long sleeves are a requirement. Again, hat, boots, and belt are a must.
The Queen’s Social is an event that is not considered a competitive function. This is a social event – you
may be observed, but not judged. Choose attire for this function using your best judgment.
While attending GRAND ENTRIES and the CORONATION, no dresses or skirts, vests or jackets will be
allowed. Wear colored jeans and dress pants and a blouse or shirt. Boots, belt and hat must be worn.
Your physical appearance depends upon your attitude. Judges look for a positive, uplifting attitude in a
contestant. Do not compare yourself to anyone else. Know yourself and be the best you can be!
Personality (1-25 points)
The judges will be looking for a well rounded person who displays the following characteristics:







Intelligence and good common sense.
Educated, conversational ability in areas with emphasis on grammar and enunciation.
Attractiveness, not necessarily to mean beauty in this sense, but whether or not the contestant
radiates self confidence without making an issue of it. She should also show maturity, high
moral standards, sincerity and integrity.
Personality reflections, to include contestant’s style of attire, overall appearance, magnetism,
and eye appeal.
General interest in other people, in the pageant and in the rodeo as well as noticeable
consideration for others.
Self projection, ability to project one’s personality, whether on horseback in the arena or before
the audience while modeling or speaking. Also to be considered are sense of humor,
showmanship, ambition, desire, and enthusiasm.
Happy outlook on life in general!
NOTE: The judges will each receive a copy of your completed questionnaire.
Personal Interview (1-50 points)
There will be a short interview with all judges. They will ask general questions. Judges are looking for
honesty, sincerity and the real you. No questions regarding sex or religion may be asked during this
interview.
Prepared Speech (1-50 points)
You will be required to give a two (2) minute speech on the following: SPEAK ABOUT YOUR COUNTRY,
STATE, OR ANYTHING WITH A WESTERN THEME.
Speeches will be timed, so keep it at two minutes. Judges will be looking for originality and creativity.
Make sure your speech comes from the heart.
Impromptu Question (1-25 points)
Each contestant will be asked to answer an impromptu question following her speech. This may be on
any subject and will allow the judges to see how well you think on your feet.
Horsemanship (1-50 points)
This division best demonstrates the ability of the contestant to handle her mount confidently, smoothly
and correctly. The horsemanship will follow the National rules and will include a reining pattern and the
grand entry flag presentation (see enclosed pattern). Once you have completed your pattern, return to
the arena, approach the judges area and dismount your horse. At this time you will be asked a few
horsemanship/equine related questions. No grand entries at the rodeos will be judged, but you must
ride in them as though you are being judged.
NOTE: The contestant will receive a zero (0) from each judge for falling off or being bucked off the
horse during the horsemanship pattern.
Written Test (1-25 points)
A test of fifty (50) questions will be given on the NHSRA rulebook. True/false, multiple choice and fill in
the blank questions will be used on the test. Be sure to study that rule book!!
There will be no photographic judging in this contest. IT IS STRONGLY SUGGESTED BY THE NATIONAL
ASSOCATION that you have a photo or portrait ready before the state competition, so that in the event
you are crowned NDHSRA Queen, your National application can be completed and sent in right away. If
it is not possible to have a portrait done prior to the State competition, please include a casual headshot
with your application. Please include a hard copy for display as well as a digital copy emailed to me at
