EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN WORSHIP
Third Sunday of Easter
April 19, 2015
Mission Statement: “We are disciples of Jesus, growing in faith,
serving our community, and connecting others to Christ.”
Welcome to Christ Lutheran Church
If you are a visitor, please know of our delight in having you in our midst. Join with us in
the praise of God and at the Lord’s Table. We have a policy of open communion inviting
all who are members of Christ’s Church to share in his Holy Meal. Children not yet
prepared to receive this sacrament are invited to come forward and receive a blessing. If
you are without a church home, please return and worship with us regularly.
In the time before our service begins, all are encouraged to pray and reflect in order to
make us open to God’s Spirit. For a reflection and meditation resource to use before
service begins, we encourage you to read Martin Luther’s Small Catechism found on pages
1160-1167 in The Evangelical Lutheran Worship Hymnal. Children are always welcome
in our worship. A quiet nursery is available at the back of the sanctuary if parents need a
place to take their young children during the service. A Children’s Bulletin is available.
Our ushers will be glad to assist you.
Please take a moment to sign our attendance book and pass it on. Visitors, please provide
your mailing address so we can acknowledge your presence. Members, please provide any
updates or changes to your contact information.
The Lord’s Supper
The Lutheran Church teaches that in Holy Communion the body and blood of Christ are
truly present in the bread and wine, and that through this gift we receive forgiveness of
sin, life, and salvation. We invite all who are baptized and share this faith to come to the
Lord’s Table and receive this gift. Both wine (dark) and grape juice (light) are offered.
Those unable to come forward should mention this to an usher; the pastor will serve you in
your pew.
INVITE someone to worship with you. All of us know someone who needs the Lord and a
place to worship and serve. In your circle of influence, be an influence for Jesus Christ.
Your invitation will make a world of difference in that person’s life!
Prayer Requests
Anyone with a prayer request, please fill out a red prayer card located in the pews, at the
beginning of the service and hand it to an usher during the Hymn of the Day following the
sermon. The requests will be offered during the prayers in the service. You may also call
the church office at 785-5560 and relay your request to the church secretary, who will
make certain the information gets to the prayer chain ASAP.

WELCOME
*CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS
PASTOR: Blessed be the Holy Trinity, + one God, who calls us beloved children, who
gathers us into one flock, who guides us into all truth.
PEOPLE: Amen.
PASTOR: Let us confess our sins, trusting that God will forgive us and cleanse us from all
unrighteousness.
[Silence for reflection]
PASTOR: Faithful and just God,
PEOPLE: we confess that we are captive to doubt and fear, bound by the ways that lead to
death. We have not loved our sisters and brothers as you have first loved us.
Forgive us, God of mercy. Let your Holy Spirit work in us to change our lives
and make us new, that we may know the abundant life given in Jesus Christ,
our risen Lord. Amen.
PASTOR: In this is love, not that we loved God but that God loved us and sent the Son to
atone for our sins. In the name of + Jesus Christ, I announce to you that your
sins are forgiven. Let the perfect love of God cast out fear, fill you with joy, and
inspire you to live for others.
.
PEOPLE: Amen.

*THE GREETING
PASTOR:
PEOPLE:
The grace of Jesus Christ, the mercy of the Holy One, and the Spirit of the
living God be with you all.
And also with you.

*THIS IS THE FEAST
3
*THE SALUTATION
PASTOR: The Lord be with you.
PEOPLE: And also with you.
*THE PRAYER OF THE DAY
PASTOR: Holy and righteous God, you are the author of life, and you adopt us to be your
children. Fill us with your words of life, that we may live as witnesses to the
resurrection of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and
reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
PEOPLE: Amen.
THE WORD
THE FIRST LESSON:
Acts 3:12-19
After healing a crippled man, Peter preaches to the people how God's promises to Israel
have been fulfilled in Jesus. Through the proclamation of Christ's death and resurrection,
God is offering them forgiveness and restoration in Jesus' name.
12[Peter]
addressed the people, "You Israelites, why do you wonder at this, or why do you
stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we had made him walk? 13The God of
Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our ancestors has glorified his
servant Jesus, whom you handed over and rejected in the presence of Pilate, though he
had decided to release him. 14But you rejected the Holy and Righteous One and asked to
have a murderer given to you, 15and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from
the dead. To this we are witnesses. 16And by faith in his name, his name itself has made
this man strong, whom you see and know; and the faith that is through Jesus has given
him this perfect health in the presence of all of you.
17"And
now, friends, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. 18In this
way God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, that his Messiah would
suffer. 19Repent therefore, and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out."
The Word of the Lord.
PEOPLE: Thanks be to God.
THE SECOND LESSON:
1 John 3:1-7
God has loved us in order to make us children of God. Though we do not yet know the full
details of our future existence, we trust that God will reveal it just as God revealed Jesus
to take away our sins.
1See
what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that
is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
2Beloved, we are God's children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we
do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. 3And
all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.
4
4Everyone
who commits sin is guilty of lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5You know that he
was revealed to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6No one who abides in him sins;
no one who sins has either seen him or known him. 7Little children, let no one deceive you.
Everyone who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous.
The Word of the Lord.

*THE GOSPEL VERSE
*THE GOSPEL
Luke 24:36b-48
In this account of an appearance after his resurrection, Jesus opens the minds of the
disciples to understand him as Messiah. Jesus convinces them that he has been raised and
sends them on a mission to proclaim the message of repentance and forgiveness.
36bJesus
himself stood among [the disciples] and said to them, "Peace be with you." 37They
were startled and terrified, and thought that they were seeing a ghost. 38He said to them,
"Why are you frightened, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39Look at my hands and
my feet; see that it is I myself. Touch me and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones
as you see that I have." 40And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his
feet. 41While in their joy they were disbelieving and still wondering, he said to them, "Have
you anything here to eat?" 42They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43and he took it and ate
in their presence.
44Then
he said to them, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with
you—that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms
must be fulfilled." 45Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, 46and he
said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on
the third day, 47and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his
name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48You are witnesses of these things."
The Gospel of the Lord.
PEOPLE: Thanks be to God.

HYMN OF THE DAY
“Lord, Be Glorified”
ELW 744
*THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy
Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died,
and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into
heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living
and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the
forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
*THE PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH
PASTOR: Let us pray.
PEOPLE: Have mercy, O God.
*THE PEACE
PASTOR: The peace of the Lord be with you always.
PEOPLE: And also with you.
The congregation is invited to share the Lord’s peace with one another: “Peace be with you.”

*THE OFFERTORY PRAYER
PASTOR: God, accept and bless these gifts that are signs of your gracious love for us. We
give these offerings to be used for the work of your kingdom. We give ourselves,
our time, and energy to be used as your hands and feet in the world. We give
our hopes and dreams to you and place them in your hands.
PEOPLE: Amen!
*HOLY COMMUNION
PASTOR:
PEOPLE:
We are the body of Christ gathered together in community at the meal of
Christ’s victory over sin and death.
In this body there are many members, but we are all one body in Christ.
PASTOR:
PEOPLE:
We gather at the table where we meet the risen Christ in bread and wine.
You are the lamb who was slain for our sin. You are the son of the Living God.

Adult Sunday Bible Class
The leaders and members of the Adult Sunday School Class invite you to come and join us every Sunday
morning at 9:45 am in Heinrich’s Hall. We use the Augsburg Bible Studies, a quarterly dated Bible Study,
which covers a wide range of biblical books and themes. Come share the fellowship of our members, our
open and sincere discussion, and a study of how these scriptures relate to us in our lives today. We look
forward to seeing you.
Attention All Singers
Our Adult Choir rehearses on Wednesdays from 5:00-6:00 in the music room, which is located in the
education building. If you are here on the Island for a week, a month, 6 months or full time, please know
that you are welcome to join us. On Sundays, the choir meets at 10:10 to warm-up and go through that
day’s anthem, then sings at the 10:30 service each week. An ability to read music is helpful, but not
mandatory. Come join us when you can to help in this wonderful ministry to Christ Lutheran Church!
Questions? See, call or e-mail Karen Osborne at (342-2133 or [email protected]).
American Heart Association Heart Walk
May 9 at Shelter Cove Park. Once again, Wayne Sebulsky is our Team Captain for Christ Lutheran Church.
Why the Heart Walk? Did you know 1 in 3 Americans have some form of cardiovascular disease and that
heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined? We can change these statistics by
joining together to walk and fundraise for Heart Walk. We had such a great time last year as a team in
Bluffton. An online team page to sign up for the walk or to donate is at
http://heartwalk.kintera.org/palmetto/christlutheranchurch. The ID is CLC2015 and the password is
Lutheran. Let’s strive for another great turnout and represent CLC! You can help by walking or donating.
For more information, contact Wayne Sebulsky at 843-715-3287.
Sign Up to Give Altar Flowers
Save your Sunday to dedicate the altar flowers by signing up on the Flower Chart that is posted on the
foyer bulletin board (across from the bathrooms). The price for each flower arrangement is $35.00.
Sign up for your special day to commemorate a birthday, a wedding anniversary, the remembrance of
a loved one, a special gratitude, or just to give thanks to God.
CLC Book Club
The Book Group will be meeting Saturday, May 9, at 1:30 at the home of Linda Kondor. Please let her
know you are coming at [email protected] or 681-4962. We will be discussing the book Being

Family Promise 2015
Christ Lutheran Church has committed to be a support church again for the coming year for All Saints
Episcopal Church. This will be the 8th year in which All Saints will be a host church. The benefit of that is
that they have a well-developed program to serve their guests with meals, shelter and loving care. We
have been asked to seek from our congregation volunteers to cook a meal or be an overnight guest at the
church. The specific weeks are: April 19-26, 2015; August 23-30, 2015; and October 11-18, 2015. We
prayerfully ask you to look at your calendar and choose an evening, hopefully in each time period, in each
time period, in which you can volunteer. Please call Alan Coyne, Christ Lutheran’s coordinator for Family
Promise, for more details. His office number is 843-682-8106; Cell is 843-290-2124; Home is 843-6819747. Email is [email protected].
Deep Well: Collection Sunday
The first Sunday of each month is our collection Sunday. Please consider all of the ways Deep Well helps
people right here in the Lowcountry and how you can help them. Any and all donations of non-perishable
food and household paper goods are greatly appreciated. Paper towels, toilet paper, Kleenex, cereal and
spaghetti sauce are especially needed right now!
Soup Kitchen Mission
God has given us the honor to SERVE the homeless and poor of this island every second Thursday of the
month. Our next opportunity is May 8. We are calling all members with a heart for service and mission
and BAKING to sign up to help once a month at the Soup Kitchen at St. James Baptist Church (corner of
Beach City Road and Dillon Road). The kitchen feeds approximately 100 people every Thursday (from noon
to 1:00 pm) and is supported by many other churches in our area.
We are asked to provide the dessert every second Thursday of the month (our first one is June 12) for the
100 or so people. Please let us know ASAP if you are willing to bake some goodies (i.e. cookies, cupcakes,
brownies - individual serving type things), can donate fresh fruit, can serve or deliver food that day or all
of the above! You can email or call Silke at 843.29.2823 or [email protected] to see how you can help!
Musical Fellowship Event!
Mark your calendar now for the first Saturday in May, May 2, and plan to join us in Heinrich’s Hall at
6:30 for a wonderful Christian concert presented by Tim Malchak.
Tim Malchak is an American country music singer/songwriter. He partnered with Dwight Rucker in
1982 to form the country music duo Malchak & Rucker. They became the first black/white duo in country
music history.
Tim moved to South Carolina in 1992. In 2001, he released his first Christian album, Pathway to Glory,
on his own Parable Records. Later that year, he launched Tim Malchak Ministries. To date he has
released 7 Christian CD’s.
We encourage you to bring family and friends. A free will offering will be collected at the door.
This event is brought to you by CLC’s Fellowship Committee.
