CONTENT CREATORS
Intelligent Tone
Management Solution
The Key to Creating Next Generation Video
Technicolor’s Intelligent Tone Management solution offers an immediate opportunity to unlock the millions of hours of existing SDR
content and release it into an HDR world. This software plugin can boost the dynamic range of legacy content by adjusting the
image on a localized basis and adapting it to new display technologies. As Technicolor has chosen to pursue an open approach to the
development and deployment of its Intelligent Tone Management solution, this plugin enables the creation of any kind of content on
any platform and is licensable across multiple popular color grading systems.
The entertainment industry has always looked for ways to
leverage new technologies in service of better consumer
viewing experiences. This overarching goal continues today
with innovations like 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD) and the
development of new enhancements based on Higher Dynamic
Range (HDR), Wider Color Gamut (WCG) and Higher
Frame Rate (HFR).
 The Challenge
While these technological developments offer great promise,
there is an immediate challenge: very little content takes
advantage of these new capabilities.
As a result, the pressure is on to find solutions that not only will
showcase natively graded HDR content, but that can enhance
existing Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) content to deliver a
compelling customer experience.
 Introducing the Key
to the Future
The Intelligent Tone Management solution from Technicolor
offers an immediate opportunity to unlock the millions of hours
of existing SDR content and release it into an HDR world. This
software plugin for popular color grading systems can boost
the dynamic range of legacy content by adjusting the image
on a localized basis and adpating it to new display technologies.
This capability is critically important to the entire value chain of
content creators, owners, distributors as well as manufacturers
of TVs and Set-Top Boxes. It delivers the promise of meeting
demand for enhanced content as new HDR devices start to hit
the mass market.
 B
enefits of Technicolor
Intelligent Tone Management Software Plugin
Technicolor’s Intelligent Tone Management software plugin gives
broadcasters and content owners new options for efficiently
producing HDR content. It analyzes video content in real-time,
providing colorists with the ability to manipulate luminance in
the shadows as well as adjust mid-tones and highlights with an
unparalleled level of control. The plugin provides an immediate
and high quality HDR version but also has uses for colorists
when grading SDR legacy content as well. The plugin retains
the original creative intent when expanding the project to the
HDR space.
Technicolor’s solution brings to life the wonder of greater depth,
richer colors and more details for a more realistic and immersive
cinematic experience.
Technicolor’s Intelligent Tone Management solution empowers
broadcasters and content owners to create HDR content in their
own facilities for quick turnaround and in-house control.
 A

the UHD Alliance* (www.uhdalliance.org), the forum looking
to establish an open standard for HDR grading. Technicolor’s
Intelligent Tone Management plugin is licensable across
multiple popular color grading platforms including Autodesk’s
Lustre and Blackmagic’s DaVinci Resolve. An OpenFX version
of the plugin will be available, enabling use across all platforms
that support the interoperable plugin format.
 HDR
