I wish to be considered for the position of Associate Vice President/ Campus Executive Officer on
the Northern Arizona University –Yuma campus. Accordingly, I have enclosed my vitae and
references for your review and consideration. Should my background and experience be
compatible with your needs, I look forward to discussing the position with you in the near future.
I am confident that my collegiality, resourcefulness and administrative experience fit this
appointment well. I’ve served as the Associate Dean for the San Diego State University’s Imperial
Valley campus for the past five years and, prior to this, Chair of the Division of Professional
Studies for about seven years. In the context of these roles, I have worked closely with faculty,
staff, and administrators on the Imperial and San Diego campuses, colleagues at the community
college, and members of the community on a wide range of issues including academic program
development, transfer articulation, accreditation, workforce and economic development,
enrollment management, implementation of budget reductions, and development of revenue
enhancement strategies. Among the accomplishments on this campus that I am most proud of
having been a part are: (1) establishment of a unique integrated four- year educational program in
collaboration with the local community college that leads to completion of bachelor’s degrees in
four years (known as the Imperial Valley University Partnership), (2) the creation of an Energy
Sustainability Center and an accompanying 6 megawatt, 37 acre, revenue-producing solar field on
our 200 acre campus in Brawley, and (3) development of a working relationship with the economic
and workforce development interests in the region that brings the resources of the university to
bear on the economic, educational, and social needs of the community. The SDSU-IV campus is a
stand-alone branch campus of SDSU, an Hispanic Serving Institution, with a full range of student
affairs, academic affairs and campus operations functions including maintenance, grounds and
custodial services. There are about 40 staff persons supporting campus operations at two sites.
Student headcount is just over 900 (about 690 FTES) with undergraduate or graduate majors in
Psychology, Criminal Justice, History, International Business, Mathematics, Social Work (MSW),
Public Administration (BA and MPA), Spanish, English Literature, Liberal Studies, Nursing (RN
to BSN), Latin American Studies, and Teacher Education credential and degree programs.
Enrollment has been growing steadily over the past five years, particularly in professional studies
programs. There are nearly 100 faculty members supporting academic programming on the
Imperial Valley campus including 17 tenured/ tenure track faculty assigned full-time to the
Imperial Valley campus. Of the remainder, a small number of faculty are drawn from
tenure/tenure track faculty on the San Diego campus and the rest are part-time / full-time lecturers.
All SDSU-IV tenure, tenure track faculty members have joint appointments to their respective
departments on the San Diego campus. Most courses are offered face-to-face with more being

offered using a hybrid format involving on-line or videoconferencing technology. Increasingly,
courses are being offered completely on-line. I suspect there are many similarities in the
circumstances and challenges faced by the NAU Yuma campus and the SDSU-Imperial Valley
campus, particularly with respect to coordinating the relationship with a geographically distant
mother campus, and creating campus life for a relatively isolated and disadvantaged population in
an educationally underserved border region.
On a personal level, I have a strong work ethic, am enthusiastic, and like to work collaboratively
and inclusively with other administrators, faculty, staff, students and members of the community.
I have enjoyed a great working relationship with external constituent groups and community
leaders, often serving on boards, task forces, and working groups such as the Imperial County
Workforce Development Board, Brawley Chamber of Commerce, and Community Corrections
Partnership.

Associate Dean for Academic Affairs , San Diego State University, Imperial Valley Campus. Responsible for a
variety of academic affairs and campus management functions including: overseeing faculty Review, Tenure, and
Promotion (RTP) process; overseeing tenure-track faculty hiring process; hiring, orienting and evaluating part-time
faculty; reviewing academic contracts; program planning and course scheduling; curricular changes (CurricUNET);
