LESSON PLAN Elementary Fitness Chart Kits Cross-Curricular Integration with Numeracy Summit Series Challenge Integrate numeracy with fitness charts! Goal: Summit the seven highest mountains on each continent. Mountain heights are provided on the following page. Instructions: • Place students in groups of 2,3 or 4. • Provide hand-out to track reps & pedometers to track steps. • Start with the lowest mountain peak first. • Use easier circuits and progress to hardest for Mt. Everest. • Use repetitions & steps and the Functional Fitness Charts to design your challenge. • Determine how you would like to determine the number or reps and steps for each summit. For example: • Mt Puncak Jaya (Australia) is the smallest 7S at 4,884 m or 16,024 ft. • Students must complete 4, 884 reps and 16,024 steps to summit it. • With 6 stations set up and students rotating between doing a station & jogging/walking (alternating pit and cardio circuit design). • Using 50 secs w/10 secs; rest/change-over time. • Completing the circuit 2X would equal 24 mins. • Avg. reps =1,200-1,800 & steps in a half gym = 3500-4000 • You would summit in 4 days. Added excitement: Add visuals of mountain range in your classrooms and use “team names” for groups. Provide background on each mountain range. Plot distances after each session.
