Programme
to Plugged In - New Wine’s worship training day.
Today is about a bunch of Kiwis coming to share,
learn and grow together. Many of us don’t work for
a church, haven’t passed grade 8, and can’t re-wire
the latest FOH speaker. But we love God and want to
keep offering our best.

the local church. We’re all about championing the
Church, in all her wonderful diversity, as she advances
God’s Kingdom and changes this nation.
Today you’ll meet people from other ordinary places
who have the same heart as you and face the same
stuff as you. The day will be filled with real ideas to take
back and use week in-week out in your local church.
There’s something for everyone; all-in sessions, worship,
panel discussions, a variety of electives.
Most of all by the end of the day we want you to leave
refreshed, secure in the knowledge of who you are in
Christ, and that you leading well blesses not just your
local church, but the very heart of God.

When entering All Saints Community Centre the;
HALL is the large room opposite the kitchen
LOUNGE is the room adjoining the hall
GREEN ROOM is the first room off the corridor past the kitchen
RED ROOM is the second room off the corridor past the kitchen
OFFICE is at the end of the corridor off the foyer
Lunch Options
Head to the street and find a local cafe to suit your tastes, including our
mate Robert next door at Café Royale.
Want more? There’s foodhall style cuisine in The Plaza, Pak’n Save
behind the church or Palmy’s Parnell-style cafés one block ahead on
George Street.

OTHER INSTRUMENTS
ACOUSTIC GUITAR
Richard Brown - Red Room
Brass, woodwind, strings - whatever you play come and gain a better
understanding of how to include these instruments in a worship team.
SOUND
Ben Brunskill - Hall
Learn the secrets behind a great sound check and getting the best sound
using the system you’ve got. The session will also include time to ask
those puzzling sound issues about your own church setup.
Visuals
Chris Darnell - Lounge
A look at both the practicalities of projecting worship song lyrics in a way
that assists a congregation to worship with confidence, and other ways
the space in which we worship communicates and matters.
KEYS
Steve Papworth - Green Room
This elective will cover three main areas;
a) An overview of standard keyboard instruments, sounds and textures
and how to apply them;
b) Practical tips on applying chord variations to a keyboard part to add
depth to a worship song;
c) Working with other instruments in a band setting.
CHARACTER OF A WORSHIPPER
Lyndon Tongs - Office
We lead worship from where we’re at. Come and discuss the importance
of living a life of worship, the significance of having a tangible relationship
with God and a heart that is full of reverence, thankfulness, praise and
love for Him.
Ben Brunskill - Red Room
In this session Ben will discuss tools and techniques for playing the
acoustic guitar effectively in a worship setting. This session is hands on,
practical and has time for all those picky question.
DRUMS
Hayden Lauridsen - Hall
This elective is all about drumming in a church environment and the role the
drummer plays in the music team. We will cover a very musical approach to
drumming and have a chat about things from playing styles to techniques,
tone and volume through to band leading, click tracks and cool gear.
THEOLOGY OF WORSHIP
Mark Easton - Lounge
The role of worship in our lives and the form it takes is guided consciously
or unconsciously by various principals. Why do we do what we do? How
can we be sure we’re worshipping in spirit and in truth? What role does
Sunday morning have? Compliment the amazing practical tips you’re
learning today with some deeper reflection on worship.
ARRANGING
Steve Papworth - Green Room
This workshop will be in two parts. a) Arranging for a standard worship
band format to create effective dynamics, and b) how to add orchestral
instruments to a worship band and write parts for them.
BASS
Richard Brown - Office
This session will explore the role of a bass player in a worship team,
looking at musicality, how to support a worship leader, how to work with
a drummer, among other things. The session will be fairly informal and
suitable for players of all levels.

WORKING WITH WHAT YOU'VE GOT
Hayden Lauridsen - Red Room
Come and discuss creative and practical ways to work with what you
have to bring out the best in your music team, whether small, large or
anywhere in between.
VOCALS
Alice Hocquard - Hall
This elective looks at the basics for maintaining, protecting, and
strengthening the most diverse instrument there is - your voice. It will
also cover correct mic technique, a vocalist’s role in a music team, your
responsibility to the wider church, preparing your heart for worship and
the important element of listening.
TEAM TOGETHER
Twelve months is just too long, so we’re
inviting all past, present and future
team to Team Together later this year.
We want to see God’s Kingdom come in

PLANNING A WORSHIP TIME
Rachel Dann - Green Room
Constructing a worship time that leads people to encounter God and
allows them freedom to respond to Him requires careful planning.
This session will share some ideas of how to plan, format and develop
a worship time for your congregation and will look at transitions,
programme elements, songs and their structures.
ELECTRIC GUITAR
Sam Couper - Office
This elective looks at how the electric guitar can take the sound of your
team to the next level, alongside some tips for playing in a worship band.
We’ll also cover the essentials on gear and how to get the best with what
you have. “We don’t wake up and decide to worship for 20
minutes, and then the worship begins. When we
worship, we’re simply joining in with the eternal song
sung throughout creation.
Our worship is in response to God. He reveals and we
respond. We see and then we sing. We hear and then
we act. He blesses us and then we bless him.”

Speakers
DOT COSTLEY describes herself as
a seriously grey-haired person, who
has been a worship leader at All Saints
Palmerston North through nearly 30
years of change in church music. We
describe her as one seriously wise chick
well worth sitting at the feet of to glean
pearls of wisdom.
MATT SOONG is a carpenter who
plays the piano. He spent 10 years in
London involved in the indie rock scene
and the Worship Central team under
Tim Hughes. Matt has also played
keys for artists including Ron Kenoly,
Anita Prime and worked with some top
international producers.
BEN BRUNSKILL is a sound engineer
and musician from Masterton. He
started by doing sound in church and
has gone on to work alongside bands
and artists in both the church and
secular music scene. Ben believes good
sound is not rocket science and enjoys
passing on his knowledge to help
churches communicate better.
HAYDEN LAURIDSEN has been
playing and performing for almost 20
years in a range of musical genres. And
it all began in the church music scene.
He is well known as the drummer in
the highly acclaimed bands Dirt Box
Charlie and Truly Made and recently
toured with the Eclipse Pink Floyd
Tribute show. Hayden is involved in
the Creative Arts team at Salt Church,
Palmerston North.
MARK EASTON has always had a
love for music and has spent much
of his life playing styles from jazz to
ska to americana folk. He regularly
leads worship at Kingston Community
Church, Palmerston North and has a
heart to see worship as an authentic
and creative response to God.
CHRIS DARNELL is a member of the
New Wine Leadership Team and is an
Anglican Vicar in Whitby. When not
working he likes to listen to good music,
go for walks, devour information, make
music, design things, whistle, talk to
himself and whatever else tickles his
fancy.
LYNDON TONGS attends Life Church
Palmerston North and is an active
songwriter who performs regularly in a
variety of environments. With over 15
years experience in youth ministry and
leading worship teams it makes sense
that he now works as an Insurance
Broker. Yeah right.
ALICE HOCQUARD has been
singing all her life. As a two year old
she was often found singing in the
bathroom and repeatedly flushing
the toilet, pretending each flush was
applause. When not working full time
for PeopleSafe, a Health and Safety
software, Alice and husband Jeremy
run a photography and videography
business.
RACHEL DANN grew up in Palmerston
North surrounded by a God focused,
people serving, loving family. When
not nursing, she serves at Crossroads
as the Deputy Music Director and
is part of the programming team for
their Nightchurch service. Rachel has
a heart to teach others and to pass on
what she has learnt along the way.
RICHARD BROWN is a maths lecturer
at Massey University, a husband,
and Dad to 5 kids. The thing that
has always kept him sane is music whether playing bass, worship leading,
playing the violin, or being involved in
musical theatre.
SAM COUPER plays electric guitar
and leads worship at Palmerston
North Central Baptist and is generally
excited by anything that’s loud with 6
strings. He is passionate about music
and how it connects people with God.
STEVE PAPWORTH is the Business
Development Manager for a specialised
manufacturing exporter. He has played
keys in bands since the mid-70’s, was
part of a song-writing duo in the 80’s,
worked with orchestras in the 90’s
and is currently the Music Director of
Crossroads Church, Palmerston North.
Steve has also occasionally been let
loose on the electric guitar and bass.
VAUGHN TONGS started drumming
as a child for his parent’s homegroup,
quickly evolving to church drumming
and travelling as a family gospel band.
These expriences cemented in Vaughn
a deep love and passion to worship
God, and train others to do likewise.

power and presence of God and biblically faithful as we together wrestle
with God’s Word to us now.

living as Spirit empowered disciples, expectant of the supernatural
presence and power of God;
engaging in Kingdom centred mission, seeing lives and communities

which we are blessed with.
