Title:
Efficient Sampling in Higher Dimensions
Abstract:
Sampling is fundamental to all areas of scientific inquiry, with examination of a subset of a
population of interest usually the basis for analyses that relate to the population as a whole. Efficient
sampling ensures that this selected subset provides the maximal amount of information for the
smallest cost. Methods for selecting scientific samples have evolved substantially over the last fifty
years. However, efficient sampling of high dimensional big data requires new methodology that
builds on recent developments in statistical modelling and optimisation. This talk will summarise the
research that has been proposed as part of a Discovery Project application that aims to develop the
theory and software for this type of large scale higher dimensional sampling, and to evaluate its
performance in selected areas of scientific research.
