What are the Options as Loved Ones Age?
Over 75% of our population over the age of 65 will need some form of long term care
during their lifetime. Whether planning for our own needs or the needs of a loved one,
many questions need to be answered. This seminar will cover three important aspects
of your planning. First, what are the options for home care, assisted living, memory
care, nursing care and more? Second, a discussion of critical care issues such as dementia, licensed vs. unlicensed homes, rehab, socialization and cost. Finally, what are
the options to pay for the care including insurance, Veterans benefits and Medicaid?
The seminar will be presented by Janine Rosenbergh, Addington Place and Gary F.
Allen, Attorney-at-Law.

New Michigan and Federal Laws that Might Affect Your Estate Plan
New Class! Most people, when asked about their estate
plan, say they are “all set”. You should always review your
estate plan whenever you have a birth, death, marriage or
divorce in your family or a significant change in your finances. However, recent changes to Michigan and Federal
laws may also dictate that you need to make changes in
your plan. This seminar is presented by Gary F. Allen, a
Northville Estate Planning attorney with more than 30 years of experience. Some of
the new laws to be discussed include:

New estate tax law eliminates the need for complicated credit shelter trusts,
which in turn will get rid of the need to file a trust tax return after death of first
spouse each year and will provide a second “step up in basis.”

New Healthcare Power of Attorney laws permits mental health provisions.

New Michigan property transfer law effective Dec 31, 2014 permits your children to inherit your
home without losing the homestead property exemption.

New Durable Power of Attorney law requires your agent to sign an acknowledgement.

New IRS ruling only allows one IRA rollover per year.

providing speakers on a variety of interesting and helpful topics.
Unique Street Names: The Man on the Street (and Women, too!)
Many towns have an Elm Street, Washington Boulevard, or Second Avenue. Setting Detroit apart
are the recognizable names of streets like Woodward, Beaubien, Mount Elliot and Selden. Behind
each of these monikers is a man or woman who played a part in Detroit’s past. This unique presentation uses everyday street signs to explore the 300 years of Detroit’s history, and the story of the
people whose legacy is traversed by citizens everyday.

“A Meal for Me” was written to help newly bereaved persons
cope with cooking for one. It is full of helpful tips and easy
recipes that have been compiled through the years by several
dedicated Hospice of Michigan volunteers.
Enjoy!
Many have asked about the recipes that were prepared and shared by Kim Fix from Hospice of
Michigan. HOM has given us permission to reprint a few from their cookbook, “A Meal for Me.”
Hearty Breakfast
1 slice whole grain, whole wheat bread
1 slice cheddar, mozzarella or Swiss cheese
Toast bread in toaster or toaster oven. Turn cheese on top, and place on a small baking sheet.
Broil or bake until cheese melts. (Watch carefully so it doesn’t burn.) Add one slice of fried bacon
or bacon bits, if desired. Put over cheese before broiling.
Fruit Smoothie
1 cup plain yogurt (or 1/2 cup yogurt and 1/2 cup milk)
1 cup frozen or fresh fruit (strawberries, bananas, blueberries, mangos or whatever)
1 tablespoon rose water (optional, but try it for a delicious change. You’ll love it!)
2 tablespoons honey
(optional—to make this a bit healthier, add a scoop of protein powder, which can be purchased at
any health food store or peanut butter powder available in many grocery stores)
Put all ingredients into the blender, blend until smooth. This smoothie stores very well in the refrigerator for a snack later.
