You always said that you wanted to give back to
the community in some way. Now here’s a perfect opportunity. That is exactly what I wanted to do
when I became Chair 5 years ago - give back to my neighborhood. I also was interested in meeting
more of my neighbors. We were in the thick of the Great Recession and I was working full-time and
attending Central Washington University working on my BAS degree in Business Administration.
Volunteering as chair for the NW Neighborhood has increased my confidence, added to my experience working with a variety of people, helped me to be a better public speaker, increased my organizational skills, and was a great addition to my resume. June Robinson was our Vice Chair at the
same time when I began leading the neighborhood and now she is one of our representatives in the
Legislature! You just never know where volunteering will take you.
Contact us at [email protected] if you’re interested in simply learning more about the
scope of these volunteer opportunities, the time commitment involved, the good you’ll be
able to do, and the fun you’ll have.
Nominations and Election for NW Neighborhood Officers – Open positions are: Chair & Vice Chair.
Other positions can be challenged; they are Secretary, Treasurer, and 2 Representative to the
Council of Neighborhoods, 1 Alternate representative.
The NW Neighborhood Association has focused on creating community for over 20 years.
Chairperson – Research and schedule speakers for neighborhood meetings, run monthly meetings,
liaison with the Office of Neighborhoods, oversee neighborhood projects.
Vice-Chairperson – Assist the Chairperson with meetings, help organize neighborhood projects.
Secretary – Take minutes of monthly meetings, Board meetings and produce newsletter.
Treasurer – Manage mini-grant monies and the neighborhood bank account.
Council of Neighborhoods Representative – 2 positions and one alternate - Represent the NW
Neighborhood at the Council of Neighborhoods meetings, (10 meetings a year), write and present a
report at the NW monthly meeting.
*Board members are asked to commit to a one year term

Whittier has a beautiful campus and a beautifully remodeled school which was completed 2 years
ago. Garden areas were made, but sadly are not maintained. These garden areas have bushes,
but they are mostly covered in weeds. This inspired me to volunteer my time and efforts.
Mrs. Olsen and Mrs. Safely take their students on verbal travels around the world, and they are the
inspiration for the gardens I have been working on. Each garden area is designated as a country
(or two) and I want to plant flowers, bushes, etc. that originated from those countries.
Last summer we were able to get the weeding under control with the help of a church group and I
have managed to keep the weeds under control in most areas in the front. Much of the flower beds
are filled with wood chips that are not plant friendly. I have purchased some garden mulch to
replace the wood chips but we need much more. We are ready to plant in some of the gardens, but
as I am the only one working on and funding this project, new plants and mulch are slow to be
purchased.
I have an area that needs help in the front along the college fence. In this area I would like it to
have a variety of apple trees which I thought would be a good supplement for school lunches. The
cost to the school for this fresh produce would be $0 dollars. Fruit trees cost in the range of
$25.00 to $40.00 each. The parents and students could
have a fun activity on a Saturday in the fall to harvest
their fruit. I am looking for NW neighbors who would like
to volunteer and help beautify this area.
I have set up a GoFundMe account online with the title:
“Whittier Elementary School Gardens” to help with
funding for this project and am in hopes that our
neighborhood would be willing to help. Would you rather
send a check? Please contact me; [email protected] or 425-299-2493.

Mother of All Garage Sale is
CANCELLED for 2015!
The volunteers for the Mother
of All Garage Sale met in
April to discuss our
neighborhood garage
sale and how the
Sewer Project “M”
might impact this
neighborhood
event. We all agreed
that the extensive
tearing up of roads and
problems with parking that we
anticipate to happen in July
would make this event very
difficult.
Although there is no official
garage sale, any neighbor is
welcome to have a garage
sale on this date. There
just will be no
“official” signs,
advertising, posters, newspaper
articles and ads,
etc. Many neighborhoods will be having
garage sales this summer.
The 7th Mother of All Garage
Sales will return Saturday,
August 6, 2016.
