Beloved Artist Mary Cassatt and
the American “Ex Pat” Experience
Claire Cross, M.A. from University of Chicago
When Mary Stevenson Cassatt, from a prominent
Philadelphia family, announced in 1864 her intention of
going abroad to study art, her father said, “I’d almost
rather see you dead.” But Cassatt rejected the traditional
conventions of her time and persevered to rise up and
become an established member of the Parisian art scene
in late 19th century Paris. She was friends with the radical
French Impressionists, although she could not join them
at the the intense cafe discussions as a proper lady. Cassatt,
who never married, painted touching images of mothers
and children. Enjoy her daring Impressionist canvases, her
pastels and beautiful prints. Hear of her life, her forty year
relationship with Edgar Degas, and her end-of-life regrets.

shown in various states of dress and undress, and depicted
in public and private settings in Paris and the surrounding

these almost mythical creatures? Their fascinating and often
poignant tales as models, mistresses, and muses will be

Chardin to Cezanne: Masters of
French Still-Life Painting
Tish Robinson, The Wonders of France
Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin and Paul Cezanne span two
centuries of French still-life painting. Chardin dominates the
genre in the 18th century with his unsurpassed paintings that
evoke a spiritual quality and a simplicity of subject matter,
masterfully elevating la nature morte (still life) from humble
to divine status. The Impressionists and Post-Impressionists
continued this tradition, with Cezanne reigning supreme,
gloriously bringing inert objects to life. These little known
works of art by these masters will astonish you!

topics, or come just to listen and learn from opinions of others.
“The Jewish Home” or “There is a

a few examples. They represent very
strong political and social principles that
are changing Israeli society. Join Moshe
Pomerantz for an in-depth look at the new
parties and their leaders, and what this may
mean for peace and war, the ‘new middle
east,’ relations with the United States, and
democracy itself in Israel. The political

Why the Humanities Matter
in an Age of Cultural Challenge
Jim Kenney, Executive Director, Common Ground
learn
A recent New York Times article by Nicholas Kristof (“Don’t
Dismiss the Humanities”) has caused quite a stir. Kristof
argues that “the world would be poorer...if we were all coding
software or running companies.” He goes on to cite three
philosophers who have shaped the way we can understand the
world. Isaiah Berlin applied pluralism of values to a “muddled
and complex” world. John Rawls approached injustice and
inequality by asking that social contracts be based on fairness
by setting aside personal identity and assuming a position not
qualified by color, wealth, ability, or social position. Finally,
Peter Singer, the pioneer of public awareness, provided
impetus to animal rights and our moral obligations to animals.

Suzanne Hales, Dramatic Book Reviewer
Few families can boast of not one but two saints among their
ancestors, a great aunt who was the last tsarina of Russia,
a father who was Grace Kelly’s pinup and a grandmother
who was a princess. Pamela Mountbatten was born at the
very end of the Roaring Twenties. As the younger daughter
of glamorous heiress Edwina Ashley and Lord Louis
Mountbatten, Pamela spent much of her early life with
her sister, nannies and a menagerie including a bear, two
wallabies, a mongoose, and a lion cub. You will learn about
her life during World War II when she and her sister were
sent to live on Fifth Avenue in New York City with Mrs.
Cornelius Vanderbilt. In 1947 her parents were appointed
to be the last viceroy and vicereine of India as it became
independent. Vivid and engaging, this witty, intimate memoir

in 1882 who began performing at the age of 12. When Hitler
came to power in 1933, Jewish musicians began to lose their
positions in orchestras all across Europe. Huberman felt
compelled to move the finest of these artists to Palestine,
and Orchestra of Exiles sheds light on this unsung hero who
saved nearly 1,000 people from certain death. The musicians

Dark Comedy Films
Reid Schultz, Filmmaker, Academic, Columbia College Faculty
Join Reid Schultz to analyze some of the funniest and most controversial film comedies of all time. Dark comedy is
characterized by morbid or grimly satiric humor, having gloomy or disturbing elements, and taboo subjects are treated in
a humorous manner. You laugh yet you feel a little ashamed for laughing. Each month, view a different dark comedy film
and take part in a discussion to explore the notion of humor and why something is funny. This course showcases films that
contain provocative material and is intended for audiences who are not too sensitive to adult themes and content.”
The Ladykillers
Bananas
Directed by Alexander Mackendrick, 1955, UK, 95 mins.
Directed by Woody Allen, 1971, 80 mins.
In this all-star comedy classic, music professor Alec
Guinness rents a London flat from a sweet old lady
to rehearse with his musical group. Truth is that he is
a criminal mastermind and wants to use her home as
headquarters for his next big heist. Through a series of
hilarious comic complications the gang of thieves believes
that the old woman has discovered their plan so they
must find a way to permanently silence her, if she doesn’t
get to them first. Also starring Peter Sellers and Herbert
Lom. The film was Oscar nominated for Best Original
Screenplay.
Woody Allen’s third film as a director is one of his most
manic and slapstick-oriented efforts, while referencing
the state of the world in the 1970s. The film tells the story
of Fielding Mellish, a neurotic New Yorker who follows
the love of his life to the fictional Central American
country of San Marcos, where she is involved in a group of
revolutionaries attempting to overthrow the government.
Fielding soon becomes a guest of the country’s dictator
before accidentally becoming the leader of San Marcos
himself. Eventually he is shipped back to the United States
and tried as a subversive, leading to a hilarious amalgam of
pop culture and political sight gags, one-liners, and bizarre
asides.

Harold and Maude received mixed reviews at the time of

dark humor, but it resonated with audiences and became
one of the biggest comedy classic films of all time. Harold
is a young man in his 20s with a death wish, who meets
Maude, a 79-year-old high on life. An eccentric to the core,
Maude lives exactly as she pleases, with avid collecting and
nude modeling among her many pursuits. To the disgust
of Harold’s relatives, and the befuddlement of Harold’s
shrink, Harold falls in love with her. With a wonderful
soundtrack by Cat Stevens, Maude teaches Harold a
valuable lesson about making the most of his time on earth.

The Heartbreak Kid
Directed by Elaine May, 1972, 105 mins.
In one of the most hilarious and provocative films of
all time, writer Neil Simon and director Elaine May
brilliantly attack religious stereotypes and norms. Charles
Grodin stars as Lenny, a slick Jewish salesman who, while
honeymooning with his new bride Lila, begins to have
second thoughts about his marriage once he spots the
gorgeous blond Kelly. Following a classic breakup scene
where he dumps his new wife, Lenny follows Kelly to her
upper-middle-class WASP home, where he runs into the
formidable opposition of her father. This brilliant, edgy
film rollicks with endlessly clever and inventive dialog
as it moves through various convoluted and hysterical
complications, all in the name of love and marriage.

The Creation of West Side Story
Charles Troy, Musical Theatre Historian

This brave, brilliant musical tragedy, born into a world of
musical comedy, took years to crystallize for its creators, then
overcame daunting challenges just to get onstage. Famous
buddies Leonard Bernstein, Jerome Robbins, and Arthur
Laurents were creating their Romeo and Juliet musical when
Bernstein realized he was spreading himself too thin by also
trying to write the lyrics. The group tapped the unknown
25-year-old Stephen Sondheim, who completed the creative
foursome with a bite that the daring project needed, and with
a soulfulness that he never again attempted.

But he did, thanks in part to President Harry Truman riding

overlook the degree to which basic technological change is
neither new nor short-term, but this historical perspective is
crucial to understanding.

Race Across the Plains: Building
the Transcontinental Railroad
Joyce Haworth, Historian, College of Lake County
The great effort from 1863 to 1869 to link the nation by rail
took risk, genius, and courage: risk from investors, the genius
of engineers, and the courage of men who did the building.
The United States government set up a fierce competition
between two rail lines, the Union Pacific and the Central
Pacific, to see who could lay the most track the fastest. Both
rose to the challenge, and the story of their success in linking
east to west is a dramatic one. It is also an excellent window
on American society as it was right after the Civil War.

Fifty years ago, in 1965, Germany and Israel reluctantly
entered into diplomatic relations. What at first glance seems
to be a rather unlikely relationship, especially in light of
the shared history, has evolved over time into a blossoming
friendship and successful economic bond. In order to make
this possible, Germany had to face its Nazi legacy and
subsequent collective guilt. Join German historian Anette
Isaacs as she discusses how her native country has attempted
to cope with the guilt of causing the Holocaust, and how
this painful process heralded a new era in German-Israeli
relations.

Legacy of Burnham’s Plan of Chicago

Chicago Tour Guide
Daniel Burnham and Edward Bennett’s 1909 vision for the
city is still revered, but the plan’s actual results are often
misunderstood or forgotten. Dennis McClendon’s view
of the central city will look at the Chicago Plan’s physical
legacies: Navy Pier, North Michigan Avenue, Northerly
Island, a straightened Chicago River, Ogden Avenue,
Congress Parkway, Union Station and Wacker Drive.
You’ll look at projects that greatly benefited the city, at
proposals that later generations reconsidered, and at heroic
accomplishments that in the end meant little.

The Bill of Rights
Gary Midkiff, College Professor
The Bill of Rights was written by James Madison in 1789, in
response to calls from several states for greater constitutional
protection of individual liberties. These amendments to the
Constitution were written shortly after that document was
ratified and listed a series of prohibitions on governmental
power. These key words and phrases still make our country
unique. The story of why these specific rights were spelled
out and not others, the compromises that were made in
their creation to satisfy both the Federalists and the AntiFederalists, and the spirited public discourse our citizens have
had since then, will all be part of the story.

Poetry Sharing Circle
Robert Soare, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus,
University of Chicago
Marlene Mitchel, Facilitator
In 1936, Alan Turing, a 23 year old student at Cambridge
University, invented the universal computer to solve a
famous mathematical problem. Turing’s brilliant solution
was artistically and mathematically beautiful, explained by
comparison with slides from Michelangelo’s famous statue of
David. When Britain entered World War ll in 1939, Turing
built a physical model of his theoretical computer and used
it to decipher the seemingly “unbreakable” Nazi Enigma
cipher machine, shortening the war by two years and saving
millions of lives. Dr. Soare tells the dramatic real story of
Turing behind the recent movie, The Imitation Game, as an
historical lecture with no technical background required.

Inside Cuba
Libby Hellmann, Author and Researcher
The Beautiful Hill Towns of Tuscany
Cruising the backroads among the Hill Towns of Tuscany,
you’ll visit lovely Sienna, historic rival to Florence; and take
in the medieval delights of San Gimignano and Volterra.
Driving past villas and vineyards leads to the wine villages
of Montalcino and Chianti’s Radda and Gaiole, and the
beautiful piazzo and frescoes of Arezzo. Other highlights
include the movie-set towns of Cortona and Montepulciano,
as well as the Etruscan boroughs of Sorano and Pitigliano
set amidst their strange sunken roads. Just beyond Tuscany’s
borders, you’ll explore Italy’s “crater lake,” and Rick Steves’
beloved Bagnoregio.
Our beautiful Earth is already confronting environmental
degradation unprecedented in human history. Our
grandchildren and great grandchildren will be the ones
who suffer. From Australian Aborigines to North and South
American native tribes who lived for thousands of years
productively in harmony with the environment, hopefully we
can learn how to avert irreversible disaster.
Libby Hellmann’s Havana Lost takes place in Cuba during
the Revolution of 1958-59 and during Cuba’s Special Period
in the early 1990s. In addition to going to Cuba, the author
did extensive research on the country and its history. This
presentation goes beyond today’s rhetoric and will deepen
the understanding of our neighbor which lies only 90 miles
from the Florida coast.

Mahatma Gandhi: Liberator of Modern India
Bill Helmuth, World Traveler
Bill will follow Mahatma Gandhi, beginning with his 20
years living in South Africa where he developed his “passive
resistance” to government violence. Returning to India in
1913, Gandhi became the irresistible moral force that freed
his country from the colonial clutches of England in 1947.
You will visit his headquarters, Ashram in Amadabad, then on
to his final footsteps in New Delhi, where he was killed by a
fanatic. Certainly Gandhi was a fascinating and indispensable
figure of the 20th century.

Adam’s First Wife: The First Jewish Feminist
Rabbi Adam Chalom, Ph.D.
The Biblical story claims that humanity began with Adam
and Eve. But rabbinic imagination, noticing a discrepancy
between human creation in Genesis 1 and Genesis 2,
imagined a new first woman named Lilith. Who was Lilith,
what did she represent, and how did she become a symbol of
Jewish feminism in the 20th century?

Are the Ten Commandments
Obsolete?
Buddy Schreiber, Educator
Americans of all faiths have embraced
the Ten Commandments, but do we
follow them? How many murders
are there each year? Burglaries?
How often do people lie? Gossip?
Disrespect their parents? Buddy
Schreiber will present the details
of the violations in each of the
Commandments in America today,
from murder to adultery, to worship
of “idols” (like money), and all the
rest. What can be done to bring about
better adherence to these universal

Religion is Not Inherently Violent
Jim Kenney, Executive Director, Common Ground
Karen Armstrong, in her masterful new book, Fields of Blood
– Religion and the History of Violence, argues persuasively

evolving historical relationship between society, religion, and
violence in a wide-ranging and provocative discussion.
