Anzac Day Commemoration
As Anzac Day 2015 draws closer this Anzac Centenary promises to be one of the
most significant commemorations to take place in our lifetimes. It will be a time to
honour and reflect upon the service and sacrifice of all those who have worn our
nation’s uniform - past and present.
One of the main objectives for the Centenary is to increase the understanding of
all Australians of the Anzac experience, our military history and its enduring
impacts on the Australia of today. For us, as a primary school, it is important that
we present the issues around the Anzac experience in an age appropriate way, not
glorifying war but understanding more the historical and cultural significance and
that the baton of remembrance is passed on to this and future generations.
Around Anzac Day itself, we will be organising a special ceremony, part of which
will be planting a sapling that has been germinated from an original Gallipoli Oak
that a digger recently brought back from Gallipoli. We are thrilled that we are one
of only a few hundred schools in Victoria to have been given an original oak.
To begin this special time of commemoration students and their families from
our school have been invited to take part in a commemoration service organised
by the Oakleigh/Carnegie RSL sub branch this coming Sunday morning. Our
students have been invited to ‘plant’ poppies that have been made by
community organisations around Oakleigh.
I invite all families to participate in this ceremony at the cenotaph, corner of
Drummond Street and Atherton Road.
Order of Events – Sunday, 19th April

10.15am: Assembly in Drummond Street, near corner of Logie Street, for
March to be led by Oakleigh City Band.

10.30am: The Cenotaph, corner of Drummond Street and Atherton Road
Oakleigh . Local Commemoration Service to be conducted by President of
Oakleigh Carnegie RSL Sub Branch including wreath laying.

11am: Following the Commemoration Service there will be a special service
to honour the 372 Oakleigh service men and women who served in World
War 1, and whose names are listed on the ‘Great War 1914 – 1918 Roll of
Honour’ located in the Oakleigh/Carnegie RSL foyer. This service will see the
completion of a project being conducted in partnership between Oakleigh/
Carnegie RSL and community organisations to make 400 ‘poppies’ which the
children and young adults from these organisations and other schools in the
Oakleigh area will ‘plant’ in the ground around the cenotaph to create a
powerful image in memory of Oakleigh service men and women who served in
WW1.

11.30am: Refreshments to be served at the RSL rooms, 95 – 97 Drummond
Street, Oakleigh.

Canteen Update
A reminder that our School Canteen will only operate on a Friday from hereon due to issues with financial viability. A new menu will
be distributed this week in readiness for this coming Friday.
Community Raffle
Our major fundraiser this year will be the Monash Community Raffle. The first prize is a car. Thank you to parent Kate Quin who has
offered to coordinate the raffle for us. More information will be circulated in the near future.
Special Assembly
Next Monday we welcome back an ex student, Longzen Han, who enrolled at our school in 1998 as a new arrival with no English. She
has since qualified as a lawyer and is about to publish her first children’s picture story book. Her journey since arriving in Australia is a
wonderful story and it will be great to hear her insights and listen to how she developed the book at our whole school assembly.

EVERYONE.
To a child a book is not just a book; it’s a
journey to wherever their imagination wants to
take them.
The Lions Club of Wheelers Hill invites you, as
parents, to take your children on a journey of
excitement to their Book Sale at Blackflat
Community Centre – Cnr. Waverley and
Springvale Roads in Glen Waverley on 16 th and
17th of May.
There will be 100’s & 100’s of books for
children of all ages, from infants through to
teenagers.
Prices for these books range from $0.50 to $2.50
and the doors will open at 8.00am on Saturday
and at 9.00am on Sunday.
Oh yes, we also have 1000’s & 1000’s of books
for adults as well.
Host Families Needed For New Exchange
Students in 2015
Many girls and boys aged between 15 and 18
from exciting countries like Italy, France,
Belgium, Germany, Holland, Canada, Japan,
Switzerland, Brazil, Norway, Sweden,
Argentina, Finland and Austria are hoping to
come here to study for 3, 5 or 10 months from
July this year and stay with a volunteer family
that is willing to host and welcome them and
can afford an extra member at the family
table. If you feel you could do this for them
for the length of their stay or even some of it,
