Suggested Bible reading for this week:
READ :: Matthew 5:1–12
This is the beginning of Jesus’ most famous teaching, the Sermon
on the Mount. Included is a collection of ways to be blessed by
God. Inherently, many of these are connected to having a gentle
spirit. While reading this, consider your interactions with others –
is it reflective of the way God has been gentle with you?

Part 3 from the series:
For the week of April 26, 2015
__ What was your high and low from the past week?
__ Today, we are talking about Gentleness, so here is a question
to get you going: Have you ever broken something valuable?
PLEASE WATCH THE DVD’S ‘MAIN SESSION’
INTRODUCTION
When we compare our unfiltered lives to a world cropped and edited
where everything is perfect, we’re left with thoughts of frustration. The
struggle to know who we are in the world without compromising who
we are in Christ is a battle as old as mankind. Today we are looking at
God’s desire to build gentleness into our lives.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. When something doesn’t go your way, how do you typically
react?
2. How would you define gentleness? What characteristics are
commonly seen in someone who is gentle?
3. In what ways would people say you are gentle? Are there specific
situations where you struggle to be gentle?
4. Read Matthew 5:5. In the Bible, meekness and gentleness are
synonymous. How does cultivating a life of meekness improve
or change you?
5. Describe a situation where you exemplified being “understanding,
not demanding” (or someone with you). How could you regularly
use that philosophy to impact others?
6. Philippians 2:4–5 says: “Care about them as much as you
care about yourselves and think the same way that Christ Jesus
thought…” How does taking the time to understand someone
impact your ability to be gentle with them?
7. Rick Warren implied that being demanding, judgemental and
being “cross” are the opposite of being gentle. What area in
your life do you need to work on to avoid these tendencies?
THOUGHT TO TAKE WITH YOU
Being gentle in a situation is not a weakness or character flaw. Rather,
to be gentle means to have strength under control. If we consider
Jesus, he displayed a life of gentleness towards those he met – yet,
no one would consider him weak. Consider the way that God is with
you: gentle, compassionate, and kind. Where in your life do you
need to extend that same gentleness to others? How can you show
the love of Christ through a spirit of meekness?
BE SURE TO PRAY TOGETHER AS A GROUP…
__ What are some things going on in your life that need prayer?
