Why Did the Cheering Stop?
Gene A. Smith, an American historian, authored a book entitled, “When The Cheering
Stopped.” The book told of Woodrow Wilson, and the events surrounding WWI. Upon the
end of the war, people were optimistic. They believed that the last war had been fought. The
dream was that the world had at last been made safe, and the way had been paved for worldwide democracy and freedom.
When Woodrow Wilson paid his first visit to Europe, he was greeted by large crowds. He was
more popular than the greatest war heroes. He was viewed as an icon of hope. There were
cheering everywhere he went!
In all, the cheering lasted for about a year, then it began to stop. Why? The political leaders
throughout Europe were interested more in their own agendas than a lasting peace, and the
people slowly lost hope...
On the home front, Wilson met opposition in the Senate, and his league of nations was never
ratified. Under tremendous stress, his health began to fail. In the next election, his party lost.
Woodrow Wilson, who almost two years earlier was heralded as a hero, came to his last days
as a broken and defeated man, it is very sad. Yet, history is filled with examples of people who
started out humbly, rose to great popularity, and came to the end of their life in utter humiliation.
We see such an example in the life of one man, Jesus, the son of a carpenter, educated in a
small town called Nazareth. One who gained favour with men, one who was cheered and
praised and rose to great popularity, would soon be mocked, scorned, and utterly humiliated
by the same people who did the cheering and welcomed him into the city.
On that Palm Sunday as Jesus approached Jerusalem, there were several things that He was
aware of. He knew the hearts of the people. The Jews were under heavy Roman oppression.
There were heavy taxes, restrictions and oppression, and Jesus knew all about those things.
Jesus knew that the Jews were in search of someone. They desired a king, a conqueror, someone to set them free. Someone who would lead a revolution against Rome and change everything that they did not like.
They had seen the mighty works of this man Jesus. They saw him opened the eyes of the blind;
they saw Him healed the lame; they saw Him fed the multitude; they heard about Him raising
Lazarus from the dead; they listened to Him teach with authority. “Surely, this man must be
the Messiah we have been waiting for,” they thought. For, who could do more miracles and
teach them with such authority than the Messiah Himself? Jesus was without a doubt the one
who would set them free! So, Jesus came to Jerusalem, and the crowds began to cheer.
And the timing was right when he came into the city - It was approaching the Passover feast.
That was symbolic of the event where the Lord passed over Egypt, and Pharaoh, the oppressor
of God’s people let His people go!
So, they were thinking, “Maybe, Jesus would somehow lead us from the restraints, oppression
and cruel treatment of Rome!” And Jesus knew their heart. He knew what they were thinking.
They wanted Him to do exactly what they wanted Him to do: they wanted someone they can
manipulate and act as their puppet to achieve their political agenda.
So when Jesus rode into Jerusalem, the crowds waved palm branches and shouted, “Blessed is
the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” In Matthew 21, “Hosanna to the Son of David:
Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest” Hosanna means,
“Save us!” but then not much later something happened. The cheering stopped—because Jesus did not do exactly what they expected he would do.
They asked amongst themselves, “Why didn’t he gather any troops?” “Why didn’t he lead a
revolt against Rome?” “Why didn’t he do this and do that?” Instead of purging the Romans out
of the city, he went to purge the moneychangers out of the temple. Instead of whipping the
Roman oppressors and he went to whip the Jews out of the house of God! Instead of rising
against Caesar, he taught people to pay taxes to him. He taught people that it is more blessed
to give than to receive! He taught that in order to be great or a leader, you must be a servant.
He publicly denounced the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and Scribes. Jesus did everything the
people didn’t want him to do and said things people didn’t want to hear. And when he seems
to being led to the road of crucifixion, people despised, mocked and rejected him because the
people in Jesus’ day were only interested in accepting him in their own terms. This is why the
cheering the stop.
My friend, if you are coming to Him today seeking true peace, you cannot come to Him on your
own terms; you must accept His terms. You must come through Him and Him alone. Because
there is no other mediator between God and Man, except Jesus Christ. You cannot come to
Him in your own time. You cannot say, “Maybe tomorrow...maybe next year...maybe later.
Because there maybe no tomorrow, no next year. You cannot come to Him with your owe merit. You cannot say, “I come to you with my good works. And you give me a ticket to heaven.”
That is not how it works. You cannot approach God with your own whims and fancies.
So, when you come to Him you must accept His claims that He (Jesus) is the Son of God, that
He is the lamb of God and that He is the Lord and Savior! If you refuse these things this life, you
will lose your opportunity to eternal life, and all that will be left for you is eternal judgment in a
place called hell. And, I urge you humbly and lovingly because I desire to see you be with me
and the myriads of born again Christians in heaven! Will you come to Jesus today and receive
Him as your Saviour?

Prayer: the Christian Soldier’s Secret Weapon
(Ephesians 6:18)
As we conclude our series of study on spiritual warfare, and
although we have already talked about the six pieces of the
spiritual armour which Paul mentions, we still have one vitally
important piece left. And although we looked last week which
we considered to be the only weapon that is both offensive and
defensive—the sword of the spirit—today we come to another
weapon which is just as powerful, maybe even more powerful
at times – it is called prayer.
I.
Perpetual Prayer: “Praying always with all prayer and
supplication” (Ephesians 6:18a)

Powerful Prayer: “in the Spirit” (Ephesians 6:18b)
1. It gives God the pleasure for us to ask Him for our
needs (Matthew 7:11)
2. Prayer is also the means which God accomplishes
His will in and through hour lives. (Luke 11:2)
3. Prayer helps us to learn to depend upon God
(James 1:5)
A. It does not mean speaking in tongue.
B. It means two things:
1. Being filled with the Spirit when we pray
(Ephesians 5:18,19)
2. Praying according to the will of God (Luke 11:2, 1
Thessalonians 5:17,18)
III.
Perseverant Prayer: “and watching thereunto with all
perseverance” (Ephesians 6:18c)
A. It is challenging to pray with perseverance (1
Thessalonians 5:17)
Summary: Prayer is powerful warfare activity. It is what God has given to us to
make use of His power in this battle we are in. When we were under enemies
fire, which we are, let us pick up the radio and say, “God, I need some help.”
And he would send it. So, next time you are facing a dire situation, call out to
God for help, and He will send it. But we need to know how to deploy our
secret weapon:
 We need to be perpetual in prayer – that means we need to have an attitude
of prayer in our daily life and we can do that by including singing of hymns and
spirituals songs as our prayers.
 We need to be powerful in prayer – we need to be filled with the Spirit when
we pray and pray according to God’s will.
 We need to be perseverant in prayer – that means we need to be persistent
in prayer for God is righteous and fair.
 We need to be petitionary in prayer – we need to be both general and
specific in our prayer.

器：

1. 人的法官常常是不公和不义的
2. 但神永远是公正，公义的
我们需要有力的祈祷 - 我们需要被圣灵充满，并按照上帝的旨意祷
告。
我们需要警醒不倦的祷告 - 这意味着我们必须坚持不懈地祈祷上帝，
因他是正义的，公平的，他必听我们的祈祷。
我们需要代求的祈祷- 我们需要一般和具体的我们祈祷。

 Pray for Israel’s protection and the salvation of the Jews in the Lord
Jesus Christ. For God to restraint Islamic terrorists/extremists from persecuting Christians and attacking innocent civilians.
 Pray for missionaries around the world for protection, provision
and for God’s grace in the ministry and guidance.
 Pray for Brother Haiseng Lim in his sketch-and-tell and youtube children’s evangelism ministry.
 Pray for missionaries serving in regions and areas where persecutions are rampant and severe: Evangelist Juniar and Helmi evangelising to the Muslims in East Java, Indonesia.
 Pray for Pastor Mark Lehman in his preaching and teaching ministry in Taiwan and other countries and regions.
 Pray for the gospel work of other BPCs: Covenant B-P Church,
Perth: Rev. Mark Chen and the Session; Hope B-P Church: Health
and strength for Rev. Ki and strength, in search of assistant pastor and

 Pray for all those who are involved in the ministry of Providence BP Church (eg. preachers, pianists, ushers, refreshment coordinators, publication ministry and etc.). Our outreach and evangelism to the
lost and building up of the saints in and around Mawson Lakes.
 Pray for God’s leading and guidance for all those who are involved
in the ministry of PBPC.
