Running Lines issue 9

The CAS competition continues this week with Cranbrook hosting Waverley in the 1st XV fixture
at 3.15pm. Teams in the Junior School play a combination of Riverview, Trinity, Shore and Kings
in venues all across Sydney. Could I please reiterate the need for boys to stay and reserve for the
game after them.
I have also included some information on upcoming fixtures against Sydney Grammar. For the
13s, 14s and 15s these are mid-week fixtures before the long weekend. For the 16As, 2nd XV and
1st XV these are in the last week of the holidays.

Match reports 9 May
1st XV Lost 21-29
The 1st XV went up against Barker last weekend in a tight contest. The early stages of the game
saw both teams wearing each other down. The first points went to Barker after taking advantage
of a concentration lapse. Strong carries from McNiven saw Cranbrook answer with 2 penalties
off the boot of Coppola.
This was then followed by a try by Szangolies after linking up with Barakat putting Cranbrook
back in the hunt. After a period of play, Barker went further ahead with another try and penalty.
It was 11-17 going into half-time with plenty of work to do.
Shortly after play resumed, both teams added 3 points to their total from their kickers. Then
Barker managed to twice breach the Cranbrook defence to extend their lead.
The Boys in White then came up with a try of their own later in the second half off the back of
some structured phases, but it wasn’t enough to finish off Barker at their home ground. With the
end score of 21-29.
2nd XV Won 17:14
The boys trained hard all week in the lead up to our game against Barker. Communication was
great, intensity was up and we were feeling good. We arrived at Barker and the rugby gods had
blessed us with a sunny day.
Barker kicked off to us with the first few minutes of the contest being a very physical with hard
hits from Olly Crowe and James Clifton-Bligh. They paved the way for Max Winton to convert
a penalty goal and put us up by 3. We went back into an arm wrestle for dominance and
dominance is exactly what James Clifton-Bligh was injecting, with forceful carries and
devastating hits, the momentum started to shift our way.
On the back of some amazing counter attack, backing up and supporting, who other than James
Clifton-Bligh was there to finish off an amazing try from a Jackson Senes off-load. Barker
didn’t want to go into the break, down 10-0, so they threw everything but the kitchen sink at us,
but to no prevail, our gutsy and sometimes frantic defence had us holding on by the skins of our
teeth. With some brilliant defence from Oskar Harington and our forward pack we managed to
hold up a certain try and send us into the half time break ahead 10-0.
We knew Barker weren’t going to come out with their heads down, they wanted to win this
match on their home turf. They came out with answers to every single one of the attacks we
threw at them and they started to run with determination and purpose. They opened us up down
the left-hand side and with a few good passes scored a nice try. We composed ourselves in the
in-goal, knew exactly what we had to do, and as quick as they changed the scores we struck with
some amazing back line movement initiated by Ed Negus who threw a lovely ball to the flying
Jack Fagan who ran through multiple opponents to score in the corner; 17-7.
As the day got older, it also got hotter, fatigue set in and it went back to an arm wrestle, with
neither team moving an inch. Players were still putting in 110%. Tom Chirnside, probably the
smallest prop in the competition, but what he lacks in size he makes up for with sheer brute
strength; Ollie Burston dishing out hits way above his weight class; Peter Doohan acting like a
bulldozer running over anything in his path; Jack Anderson, even with a busted eye, managed to
not let a single person run by him; George Gibson with some momentum-swinging tackles that
seriously rocked the opponent; Mischa Tanne with his slippery and elusive runs and Rueben
Antico doing everything, showing why he is the 2nd XV captain. Final score ending at 17-14,
good job boys!
3rd XV Won 28:7
After being washed out last week the 3rd XV arrived to a clear day at Barker desperate to have a
run. The team started solidly with Henry Poole stealing their lineout ball. Marcus Corah was
making breaks but the first half pressure was not sustained enough to produce points; Barker led
7-0 at the break.
The second half saw a lift in intensity, Brett Treisman nailed the receiver at the kick-off and our
go-forward was established. Harry Susman inspired with a barn storming break out of our half
to set up a fantastic try. Isaac Elias was always dangerous running with the ball and finished
with 2 tries. Ed Schiller used the hit and spin to maintain momentum and get one and Harry
Susman used power to cross the line. Arden kicked well for 4/4. Angus Crawford led from the
front with strong carries and off-loads which stretched Barker’s defence. All in all a good start,
but of course some areas to improve before we meet Waverley this week.
4th XV Loss 7:36
The 4th XV were inconsistent in their first game of the season. When Cranbrook had the ball in
hand they were strong and aggressive but too often this enthusiasm wasn’t matched in defence
with Barker able to score several tries. The team will be looking to bounce back in their first
home fixture of the CAS Season against Waverley.
5th XV Loss 10:41
Although the immediate start to the first half was strong and well-coordinated a decision saw a
turnover on the opposition 5m line and immediate loss of territory. Barker spread the ball wide
and soon lodged 2 tries. Strong phase play saw Andrew Gallagher capitalise on organised phase
play to drive hard from the back of the ruck and secure the first try for Cranbrook. Barker scored
another 2 tries prior to the break.
The second half saw Cranbrook secure the breakdown more effectively and enjoy more
possession. Max Overall received the ball at pace on the opposition 22 late in the second half,
broke 2 tackles to score a great solo try.
16A Win 42:17
After their second consecutive win, the 16A's left Hornsby with smiles all round. The match
began with a simple mistake from Cranbrook leading to a try from Barker within the opening 5
minutes.
However a try and conversion from Finnbar Stenmark saw both teams sitting on the same
amount of points, and by halftime the scoreboard read 12-14 to Cranbrook.
Following some strong defence from Andrew Glastras and Peter Milios Cranbrook were able to
capitalise, with Connor Sprague crossing the white line with 10 minutes to play.
Cranbrook came away victorious with the final score reading 17-42. It was a solid overall
performance from the team, with some aspects still to improve on for the upcoming fixture
against Waverley.
16B Loss 19-21
Coming from a rained off the weekend before the boys were always looking to start the season
well. Having trained well all week we were always confident that we could have a good chance
of coming away with our first win. After having a good start second rower Finn Weir crossed
the line to put us on top. Hard running from Pardey, Sleight and the front row we were definitely
putting Barker on the back foot.
After playing aggressive footy we had managed to receive a scrum in Barkers 22 in which we
ran hard at the line and prop Sleight managed to cross the line for a second try. At half time we
were on top and after a review of our first half play we came into the second half expecting to
play even better.
After Reynolds passed under the sticks for another try we looked to be in a great position. Near
the end of the game however Barker crossed the line twice due to poor awareness and we were
left defeated 21-19. Mention must go to the front row of Barta, Chalik and Sleight who played
extremely well along with Pardey, Reynolds and Walker who had strong carries and were able
to turn over the ball regularly. Although a close game all the boys agree that we are going to
need to train even harder this week so we can get a win against Waverley this week.
16C Loss 12:22
The 16C’s sadly opened up the season with a loss. The team had a fairly close game but
unfortunately Barker came away with a win 22 – 12. The opposing team had strong defence and
were very confident in attack. The boys are heading into next week with their heads up and
focused to hopefully come away with a win against Waverley.
15A Loss 5:40
As the 15A's ran out onto the field eager to prove that they are a team on the rise. They were
struck with an injury in the first 5 minutes with Matt Harris being escorted off the field. To
make matters worse Barker had scored a try minutes later, followed by another one shortly after.
To Cranbrook’s credit they worked their way down the opposition end before the break with
Tim White showing great initiative and strength to force his way over.
The half time score of 5 – 12 was a promising one for Cranbrook and a reflection on their
performance. At half time the coaches emphasised line speed and the boys took this to heart and
forced Barker into several early mistakes.Unfortunately some costly turnovers from Cranbrook
allowed Barker to score several run away tries. While it was a promising performance the team
knows it needs to cut out the mistakes which are proving costly.
15B Loss 24-5
A very good first half against Barker saw the scores level at 5-5 at halftime. Despite great
commitment in the second half, we lost a bit of structure and also composure when near to the
opposition line, failing to capitalise on our chances.
In response, Barker had a couple of good breaks from loose play and ran away a bit in the
second half. We did very well to hold on at the end and the boys can be very pleased with the
stoic defence they showed throughout.
15Cs 17:22 Loss
Round 2 for the 15c’s highlighted a drastic improvement on the preceding round against St.
Aloysius. The boys knew Barker would be a physical game, so they worked hard at training
during the week to strengthen tackling technique and aggression. This training was clearly
evident on the field, with strong defensive efforts from Monty Morrison-Budge and Jamie
O’Sullivan.
On the back of this momentum, attack began to flow more freely, highlighted in some damaging
runs from Liam Lucas which materialised in a try. The squad was very proud of the effort
displayed on Saturday despite a narrow 22-17 loss, and are looking forward to taking on
Waverley.
14A Won 22:14
The 14As were coming off a win where we did not play anywhere near our potential and knew
that this week’s assignment, Barker College, would require a much
more aggressive performance. We started extremely well with Oliver Carroll scoring a hard
earned try off the back of some great ruck work. We didn't take our foot off the pedal and Oliver
Lamens scored in the corner off some great decision-making from Jude Gibbs.
Our next try was the result of good coaching and good execution scoring off a driving maul
from a line-out five metres out through Gabe Meyer. We went into the break 17-7 up with Jake
Taylor making one and missing two difficult sideline conversions, knowing we would have to
work hard to maintain this lead. We came out and did just that, with our big prop Hugo
Hayman scoring a rare try in the corner securing another important win. It was an improved
performance from Round 1 but Round 3 will present a greater challenge still.
14B Won 12:7
The 14Bs ran out feeling nervous when they saw the size of the Barker team: but those nerves
didn¹t last long as they soon got to work. It was a tough and physical match, having to grind out
against the big Barker boys. A number of phases around the corner were put together
throughout the first half, but some boys running sideways prevented the momentum needed to
cause trouble for Barker. Unfortunately, when the backs got the ball they were shut down
effectively by the Barker defence.
A try to Remy Livingstone gave us a confidence boost coming into the break. At half time we
were told to straighten up and take hits and try to give as much support as possible. In the first
half we did not have great success getting over the advantage line off the 9, so we went to two
man Pick and Gos. We were able to rumble the ball up the field which resulted in a try to Tom
Greig, and a great conversion by Ben Waitsman from the 15m line gave us the extra two.
When we got the ball back in hand, Barker tightened up their defence and again shut down our
two main ball carriers resulting in Barker scoring a try. As the half went on, we became tired as
we had to work so hard for any metre gained. With 10 minutes left in the second half Barker
were in our 22, we had to man up and defend with great pride and gusto to hold them out: which
we did. With a scrum to us with two minutes to go, we finally got the ball up field to the 40m
line and kicked it out to win the match. It was a gutsy and hard fought 12-7 win.
14C Loss 22:26
The Cs played an enthralling encounter against Barker this week. Barker was a very big team
and we were much smaller than them; however, we were not intimidated. The Barker side
started strongly and within a few minutes we were down 7-0. The Cranbrook boys kept their
heads up and worked very hard, resulting in a try to James Heron. Marlon Moseley missed the
conversion to leave Cranbrook trailing 7-5 but, after just a few minutes, they were in the lead
with James Stevens touching down in the corner.
Barker then hit back with two tries to lead 19-10. Cranbrook then made a lot of interchanges
and, whilst the boys in the backline were quite unfamiliar with each other, Marlon Moseley and
Sam Wright still managed to work well together and set Nick Paetzholdt up for a try. The
conversion went over from out wide to have Cranbrook lead 22-19 with only a few minutes left.
On the last play Barker managed to score from some poor Cranbrook defence. The end score
was 22-26 but the team played well and can take out many positives from this clash.
13A Loss 0-10
On Saturday the 9th of May the 13 A’s travelled out to Barker for their first CAS game of the
season. We knew it would be a tough game and we put in our best efforts. However we couldn’t
cross the line or control their attack. Unfortunately we came away with a loss 10-0. Everyone
attacked well. Next time we need to work on our defensive line, integrity and line speed. Now
we need to get ready to play against Waverley next week.
13B Loss 5-32
The first game of the season was a game of two halves for the B’s. The first half demonstrated
the boy’s preseason work through dominating the ruck and possession, however were unlucky to
go into halftime behind 7-5. The second half was a much different game, with Barker
demonstrating a greater performance and as a result dominating the second half to run out
winners 32 – 5.
13C Loss 10:80
Despite the scoreline, the Cs competed well with a much bigger Barker team but had far too
many lapses in concentration which led to tries. A failure to compete at the breakdown and to
make first up tackles led to periods when opposition ran at will. However there were five minute
periods when the team built pressure and looked dangerous.
The Cranbrook fist try was a classic, after a forty metre run by hooker Angus Wilson and then a
side stepping burst by fullback Casper Crowe. Angus Wilson was inspirational in the forwards
and well supported by Matt Geng and Max Hootman. In the backs Casper Crowe and Finn
Graham-Nye made some good breaks and tackled with heart.
13D Loss 10:65
With only nine starting players, Barker ‘loaned us six of their big squad. It was an entertaining
game, dominated by the Barker ‘No 1’ side. The combined side managed two tries but had
sixteen scored against them. Finn Wong made some powerful runs and tackled aggressively,
Oscar Guth was gutsy at half back and Jude Cooper on the wing made some impressive tackles
and some powerful runs.
12B Loss 7: 30
It was a vastly improved performance from the 12Bs who lost to this same Scots side by 65
points before the holidays. Cranbrook’s attitude to tackling in particular was far better than the
previous effort and forced Scots into many errors. A few late tries to Scots was not indicative of
the game which has taken place.
12C Loss 3-5 and Loss 3 – 8
The 12Cs ventured up north to Koola Park for their long awaited first match of 2015. The
opposition looked well drilled and hungry but the boys did not shy away.
The First match against Arden. It was an intense match with pressure building from both sides.
But one side had to give way and unfortunately at the end Cranbrook succumbed, losing closely
5-3 tries to 3.
The second match was against St Aloysius. The first half was not promising with quick early
tries to Aloysius, but after managing to hold on to possession we clawed our way back with
some quick tries. Although the 8 - 3 score may not reflect their performance, it had many
promising aspects.
11A Loss 15-20
What a huge improvement from last week. There was 100% effort from all the boys in defence
and attack. We unfortunately fell short one try. Jamie F stood out showing brutal defence
against a strong Waverley side.
11B Loss 0:32
This week against Waverley saw a clear improvement in positioning and defence. A lack of
team work and some focus meant some early tries for Waverley. More practice at training on
passing the ball is needed, which should help us to finish off opportunities with points.
10A Win 28:0
The 10A’s had a convincing win on the weekend beating Trinity 28-0. The boys started the
game strong with a great display of defensive structure led by Nicholas Renwood. Stefan Ferster
as always was damaging with ball in hand splitting the Trinity defence to get Cranbrook off too
an early lead.
The forwards dominated the breakdown both in attack and defence which gave the backs the
chance to show their class. Dylan Melvey controlled the game brilliantly with some sharp
passing from half back Zachary Parker. The 10A’s are now looking forward to their round 3
fixture against Shore eager to continue their winning ways
10B Won 37:0
Saturday saw the mighty U10B take on Trinity an old foe with plenty of talent. The boys had a
fantastic start with 2 tries coming in the first half from our speedy wingers: James Stoddard and
Jamie Dawson-Damer:
The tries came so quickly the proper pitch hadn’t even been brought in 5 metres, which of
course as intelligent Cranbrook boys they used this to their advantage both skirting around the
defence with their speed. This tempo carried on throughout the First half with fantastic defence
(Toby Logan putting in the biggest hit of the half) and tries being run in from everywhere
(Danny Sassoon scoring two). By half time we were up 25:0.
The second half was similar with Cranbrook dominating the possession: however Trinity still
came out firing and if not for some good defence from Eddie Walker they would have been in
the corner. The coaches bribed the boys with a Mars Bar for whoever made the biggest hit in the
game. Up steps Sam Harris. He went on a hunt making about 3 monster hits and taking the Mars
Bar from Logan. Overall a great win however passing will need to be worked on throughout
training this week.
10C Loss 20:30
Being the first match of the year, it took the first half before the team realised they were playing
Rugby. During the second half, the boy’s began to minimise mistakes and put some real
pressure on their opposition, resulting in some good tries. Stronger tackling and clearing out at
the breakdown will help for the future.
9A Loss 20: 25
A glorious morning met Cranbrook's newest rugby recruits at Hordern. With a tough pre season
under our belts it was time to get the season under way with a Bang!
We tackled very well for game 1 and also saw some promising ball carries from all players.
However our big weakness, and ultimately our downfall was not being able to hold onto
possession for long enough periods. Mosman Prep had a couple of strong players who stole the
game from us with two late tries. A promising start to the school rugby careers of these
Cranbrook men!
9B Loss 30:45
A harsh lesson for the Cranbrook U9B boys on Saturday. The clear difference between these
two inexperienced sides was the tackling. In training this week the boys will be focussing on
this essential aspect of the game.
The home side ended the stronger team but the damage has already been done during the first
half, Certainly Cranbrook’s ball retention was impressive at times and there was some positive
pieces of broken play running. The U9Bs will now play Kings, away on Saturday at 8am.

Rotunda and BBQ Roster
The Cranbrook Rugby Club would like to encourage you all to sign up for a shift or two on the
rotunda or BBQ during the season. It is easy to do; just click the link below and enter your
details. It is a great way to get to know other parents and some of the kids in the Cranbrook
rugby community. We usually find it works best if you sign up for an hour before or after your
son plays, as you usually have to be there then anyway as they warm up or reserve for the next
team.
