PTA Presidents’ Message
We have finally begun to thaw out after a long, cold,
snowy winter. However, Mother Nature hasn't been
very kind to us yet this spring. But that's ok--it's always
warm and sunny inside the walls of School #5!
We hope you have had at least one opportunity this
year to witness first hand how the staff and
administration truly go above and beyond their call of
duty to ensure each and every child has a magical and
rewarding experience here!
Think of the staff and administration as an orchestra.
Mrs. Provvido is the conductor. Sometimes all the
instruments play at once and sometimes music will
only come from a certain section. But everyone works
together in such a way that creates the most amazing
sounds! So thank you School #5 for making beautiful
music--literally and figuratively--with our children!
Respectfully,
Tommy Beirne and Kathy Schirrmacher

8 Tips to Stop Literacy Loss Over the Summer
“… you can count on us to continually expose your children to
interesting content that stimulates their critical and creative thinking.”
April/May 2015
Dear School #5 Families,
Where has the time gone? It seems like just yesterday I was welcoming everyone to a new school year. Yet, in the
blink of an eye, spring has arrived and we are in the midst of our final trimester! It is said that time moves quickly
when one is engaged in joyful and enriching experiences. I am proud to say that this is at the very foundation of
the School #5 mission. As we approach the last few months of the year, you can count on us to continually expose
your children to interesting content that stimulates their critical and creative thinking.
Our commemoration of Earth Day is just one instance by which we will achieve this goal. All classes will be taking
part in the April School-Wide Read Aloud, The Buffalo Are Back, by Jean Craighead. This beautiful picture book
tells the little known story of how the buffalo, an American icon, was on the brink of extinction. Students will
learn of the consequences that occur when nature’s delicate balance is disrupted, and of Teddy Roosevelt’s role in
bringing this majestic creature back to the full herds that roam our country today.
As you know, this year’s theme is the Power of Perseverance. Our teachers have
done a fine job of recognizing students who exhibited academic perseverance.
They include stories of students working hard to achieve grade level
accomplishments such as, memorizing multiplication tables, editing, writing, and
reaching independent reading goals. The word perseverance has become
common place at School #5 and is now a typical part of student lexicon.
Undoubtedly, the celebrations that took place for these personal
accomplishments are another reason why the school days seemed to fly by.
Spring is here and we have so many wonderful things ahead of us, from the students’ smiling faces as they learn
and grow, to all the memorable events that take place during the final months of the school year. I look forward
to sharing all with my School #5 family.
Warm regards,
Diane Provvido

Kiwanis K Kids Club
Thomas Cesiro
Oceanside School #5 K Kids – ranks high in the NY Kiwanis District for EliMiNaTe
Funds. Since their official Charter last school year, the School #5 K Kids Club has
worked very hard to raise funds for the Kiwanis EliMiNaTe Project. This is a five
year project that Kiwanis International teamed up with UNICEF to rid the world of
Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus. The School #5 K Kids Club has raised over
$4,000 in the past two years and looking to raise more. This has placed them
among the top 10 clubs in New York for the most money raised competing
against other K Kids Clubs, Builders Club ( middle school), Key Club ( high school)
and Circle K (college Clubs).
On Tuesday, March 17th – Sister Anne-Marie Kirmse who heads the EliMiNaTe
project for New York District visited with the School #5 K Kids Clubs to express
her gratitude towards their hard work. The K Kids Club presented Sister AnneMarie with flowers, and thank you cards for her hard work. Sister Anne Marie
explained the EliMiNaTe projects and her work with Kiwanis. She explained that
it only takes $1.80 to provide the shots required for a mother to protect herself,
and her future babies from this disease. Based on their money raised, they will
have saved over 2,200 mothers and their children.

Hang Up and Drive
Tuesday, March 31, 2015
Jacy Good and husband, Steve Johnson, gave an
amazing and informative presentation on the
dangers of distracted driving. In 2008, Jacy survived
a car crash that claimed the lives of both of her
parents. It was caused by a teenager using his
cellphone while driving. The crash left Jacy with
broken bones, lacerations and a traumatic brain
injury. Jacy was given a 10% chance of surviving, but
after four months of hospitalization, she made a
miraculous recovery. She became a cell-phone free
roads advocate and launched “Hang Up & Drive”.
• If you are talking on your phone while driving, you
are 4x more likely to crash than a driver focusing on
the road, even hands free! That is the same
impairment as a legally drunk driver!
• 23% of all crashes are caused by cell phones
• Hands-Free and Bluetooth are NOT safer!
• Teach your children the dangers of distracted
driving
• Keep phones out of reach, or the best method power off or silence your phone while driving
• Be a good role model - Don’t Talk or Text While
Driving

Movie Day
Kristen Nestico
Approximately 100 of our School #5 Family and Friends gathered at The
Merrick Movie Theatre on February 17th to spend the snowy morning
watching The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. The movie was a
great way to escape the cold and snow, while laughing with friends,
enjoying some popcorn and laughing along to the fun and games of
SpongeBob and his underwater friends.
On Monday, April 6th, we offered our last Movie Day of the year, featuring
the new animated movie, HOME. Families really enjoyed this comic
adventure about being different and the true meaning of the word home.

“WHAT DO YOU APPRECIATE MOST
ABOUT SCHOOL #5 STAFF?”
8 Tips to Stop Literacy Loss Over the Summer
We received so many beautiful compliments honoring the teachers and staff at School #5. While we couldn’t fit them
all on this page, we promise that your message of gratitude has been delivered to each individual staff member.
Thank you for taking the time to show your appreciation.
“School #5 has served as my children’s second
home for almost 10 years. This phenomenal
staff has been instrumental in producing
outstanding citizens! A heartfelt thanks to the
entire faculty! Thank you for creating an
environment that encourages learning while
caring about each other.”
- Laura Knipe (Leo, 5th Grade)
“I would like to say thank you to EVERY staff member at School #5...from the teachers in
the classrooms, to the ladies in the office that never get to leave their desks as often as
they would like! In one way or another, all of you have touched my child's life and have
made her a better person, with all you have to offer. It takes a special person to be an
educator or to work within the system of educators! Coming from being an educator
myself, and needing that recognition once in a while to let us know we're doing a great
job--I thank you for being: great part-time parents to our kids, guidance counselors,
referees, nurses, shoulders to cry on, advice givers, leaders, listeners, and last, but not
least role models! Thank you for being you, School #5! - Kelly Herzog (Jessica, 5th Grade)
“You have ALL filled Lynda's bucket and helped her
become the person she is today. Your kindness and
innovative ways make her want to be a part of school
EVERYDAY! Individually you have all made a significant
impact on her life, which is why she is compelled to "do
her rounds" and say hello to you all as often as possible.
As a group, you've all helped to make the school #5
environment its best. I am grateful.”
– Samantha Feustel (Lynda, 5th Grade)
"We love how School #5 staff goes above and
beyond to help, and is like an extension of our family. When Julia,
our second grader, broke her foot last month, everyone went out of
their way to make her feel comfortable and safe coming back to
school and continues to put a smile on her face every day. We are so
incredibly grateful for this community of educators who love their
students and support and challenge them, and for Mrs. Provvido who
provides strong confident leadership".
- Jason and Renee Rawcliffe (Julia, 2nd Grade)
“It's such a comfort to know that the School
#5 staff is such a wonderful and supportive
team of educators, both in and out of the
classroom. Mrs. Provvido is a sensational
principal, who I believe leads by example. I
wouldn't want my children anywhere else but
here. I'm so happy I stayed here rather than
enrolling her in private school. …. Every time I
walk into the building, I leave feeling a sense
of comfort knowing my daughter is so safe
and well cared for. Thank you all so much!!!
- Samara Blake Rossi, (Isabella, 1st Grade)
“We love that our daughter
looks forward to attending
school! School #5 makes
you feel like you have an
extended family. We
are thankful to have such a
wonderful school district!”
- Michelle and Dean
Condoleo (Mia, 5th Grade)

The School #5 staff to me exemplifies the meanings of "community" & "family“. From
the front door to the top floor, there is not a member of this amazing school that would
not go beyond their path of duty for the children of School #5! There really is no better
combination of community then what we have at School #5. Being a parent of two
School #5 students, (Kiersten & Dylan) I can honestly say that I know my kids are just as
safe and watched after when they are in school, as they are at home. From the bottom
of my heart, I would like to give thanks and praise for looking out for my family, and the
other 544 kids in our school! -Tommy Beirne (Kiersten, 4th Grade & Dylan, 2nd Grade)
“We appreciate greatly how
their teachers and staff
members are so involved with
their learning and how they all
worry about them doing their
best at everything they
do. Thank you all for all the
help and for the great
experience that we have had
during the school year.”
- Yenelfi Flores (Andy and
Edison Morales, 3rd Grade)
“It’s difficult for me to select just one teacher who has touched our lives, as I
have wonderful things to say about each and every one of them… thus I’ll
remain general. So far, my experience at School #5 as a parent has been
fulfilling. Those whom I have encountered along the way have been most
devoted, supportive, professional and kind. I believe my daughter has
received warmth, nurturing and firmness in quantities! She has blossomed both academically and as an individual - and I have seen how much her
success is taken at heart! I sometimes send and receive on the weekends!!!
Finally, I’ve stumbled upon some humor every now and then – a quality that is
most important to me. And to the Head of School #5: no matter how nice
you are, you still intimidate her – and that’s just great!!!”
--Sagine Damas (Hana, 4th Grade)
School nurses are integral to students’ well-being and academic success. They play a key role in children’s
health and maintaining healthy school environments. In honor of National School Nurses Day on May 9th,
this issue’s staff spotlight is on Nurse Bigansky. Beloved by staff and students, Mrs. Bigansky is an
exceptional school nurse who always seems to know exactly what people need to feel better, especially
children. A natural caregiver, she has a compassionate heart and always eager to help others.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I grew up in the town of Malverne, where I still live with my husband and my three boys, Tommy (19), Kevin (16), and
Dylan (12). It was such a great small town to grow up in, so I decided to stay and raise my own family there. I went to
Molloy College in Rockville Centre where I received my BSN. I have been a nurse for almost 29 years (wow that makes
me sound so old!) All of my nursing experience has revolved around caring for children, which I believe is my true
calling in life. This is my sixth year at school #5, and I hope to be here for many years to come.
What is special about being a nurse in an elementary school?
Being a nurse in an elementary school is special. I am out numbered by more than 500 to 1, so my office is usually a
pretty busy place. I enjoy interacting with the kids during their school day, and learning about them and what they
need. It is wonderful to see them mature and grow up each year. I somehow feel like they are all "my" kids. I think
about them and worry about them the way you do about your own children.
If you had a super power, what would it be and why?
If I had a super power, I would want it to be the ability to heal. As a nurse, you are around people with various
diseases and conditions, and you never feel like you can do enough and help them and their families enough. The
ability to heal would enable me to do more for them.
What do you like to do when you are not working?
When I am not working, like most mothers, I enjoy being with my family and my three boys. I have one son in college,
one in high school starting to look at colleges, and one in the seventh grade so life is busy but wonderful. I truly feel
blessed. I absolutely love to cook, so I spend a lot of time in the kitchen cooking for my family and trying new recipes
out on them. I have always loved the beach, so we spend a lot of time there in the summer as well as at a lakeside
cabin upstate where my husband went as a child.
Who was your hero growing up?
My heroes growing up were my parents. They were such great role models and they taught us what was truly
important in life. Even though I lost them both a long time ago, they still inspire me today as I raise my own boys. I
hope that I am passing on the values that were instilled in me by my wonderful parents.

Parents’ Guide to
Student Success
The National PTA recommends the following activities to do at home to help
your fourth grader succeed at school this year.
Try to create a quiet place for your child to study, and carve out time every
day when your child can concentrate. You should also try to sit down with
your child at least once a week for 15 to 30 minutes while he or she works
on homework. This will keep you informed about what your child is working
on, and it will help you be the first to know if your child needs help with
specific topics.
Additionally, here are some activities you can do with your child to support
learning at home:
English Language Arts & Literacy
■ Urge your child to use logical arguments to defend his or her opinion. If
your child wants a raise in allowance, ask him or her to research
commonsense allowance systems and, based on that research, explain
reasons why, supported by facts and details.
■ Talk about the news together. Pick one story in the news, read it together,
and discuss with your child what it means.
4th GRADE
Class News
Mrs. D’Aulisa, Ms. Ginley, Mrs. Kaye,
Ms. Maguire, Mrs. Malpigli, Mrs. Stea
We have been very busy in 4th grade. We just
finished our second round of STEM. In this
unit, the students learned about the globe
including photoperiod and latitude and
longitude. They used the data they gathered
and some special clues in order to help them
to locate a mystery class somewhere in the
world. They were all successful in finding their
class. In math, we have been immersed
in geometry and using the protractor. It has
been a lot of fun. We will continue our study
of the Exploration of New York and we can’t
wait to light up the room when we start
electricity!

Mathematics
■ Ask your child to compare numbers using phrases like “times as much.”
For example, if the family cat weighs 8 lbs. and the family dog weighs 56 lbs.,
how many times as much does the dog weigh?
■ Ask your child to help you compare fractional amounts — for example, if
one recipe calls for 2⁄3 of a cup of oil, but another recipe calls for 3⁄4 of a
cup of oil, which recipe calls for more oil? (In 5th grade, your child will learn
ways to determine just how much more oil.)
When You Talk to Your Child’s Teacher
When you talk to the teacher, do not worry about covering everything.
Instead, keep the conversation focused on the most important topics.
In 4th grade, these include:
■ Doing arithmetic and solving word problems with multi-digit numbers
■ Doing arithmetic and solving word problems with fractions

The Fourth Grade Team
Meet Our Beloved Fourth Grade Teachers!
RAMONA D’AULISA
I have been working in Oceanside School #5 since September 2001. I taught 1st grade during my first
year, 3rd grade during my second year, and I have been teaching 4th grade ever since my 3rd year here.
This is my 12th year teaching 4th grade. I have taught 4th grade longer than any other teacher in the
Oceanside School District.
What attracted you to teaching?
Although I became attracted to the idea of teaching when I was in 2nd grade, you might be surprised to
learn that teaching is actually my second career. I have a Master of Arts in Psychology and worked for
the Nassau County Department of Mental Health for 15 years before deciding to become a teacher. As a
child, I looked up to and admired my teacher, Mrs. Stipple. I thought that teaching others was a true
talent that helped shape the future of our world. However, by the time I was in high school I started to find the idea of learning
about the way the mind works as a fascinating concept so I majored in Psychology in college. I stayed on that career path until I
realized that in order to really make a difference in the world I needed to work with people when they are young and become a
teacher. I went back to school to get my Master of Science in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. I am happy that I made
this decision because I love teaching and I love 4th grade! The best part of teaching is when I see my students’ faces light up with
excitement when they are learning something new—I live for the “Ah, ha” moments!
ERICA GINLEY
I am the special education teacher assistant in fourth grade! This is my first year in Oceanside and it has
been an amazing year so far! Prior to working in Oceanside, I was a substitute teacher in Brentwood and
West Islip for two years. I graduated from SUNY Cortland with my Undergraduate Degree in Childhood
Education and I graduated from Hofstra University with my Master’s Degree in Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math. I went back to Brooklyn College and earned an additional certification in
teaching Students with Disabilities. I currently am enrolled at Queens College, completing another
certification in Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages. As you can see, I love to be in
school! I enjoy learning new methods and strategies to help me grow as an educator.
What do you like to do when you are not working?
When I am not working or taking classes, I enjoy reading (especially when I am on the beach!) and coaching lacrosse. I was the
assistant coach for the Islip Middle School girls’ lacrosse team for two years. I played lacrosse throughout high school and
college.
Do you have a favorite sports team?
My favorite sports team to cheer for is the New York Giants. Some of my favorite childhood memories are from when my dad
and I would attend New York Giant football games every year for my birthday.

The Fourth Grade Team
Meet Our Beloved Fourth Grade Teachers!
TRACY MALPIGLI
I was born and raised in Franklin Square, but am now a proud resident of Oceanside. I graduated from
Hofstra University where I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education, Childhood
Education, and English. During my time as an undergraduate student, I was often found on the tennis
court as captain of Hofstra’s Division 1 women’s tennis team, in the stands with Hofstra’s Pep Band (I
played the flute), or in the studio hosting my own radio show on Hofstra Radio. I began my teaching
career in the Franklin Square School District, where I taught both first and fourth grade. During this time,
I continued to attend Hofstra University as a graduate student and earned my Master’s Degree in
Literacy Studies. Three years ago, I began working in Oceanside just down the road at School #4. This is
my second year teaching fourth grade at School #5 and I couldn’t be any happier!
When you aren’t working, what do you like to do in your spare time?
During the winter months, I spend most of my weekends snowboarding and skiing in Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Maine. Once the
weather warms up, I gravitate towards beach volleyball and tennis. My father taught me how to play tennis at a very young age
and he’s still my favorite doubles partner! I love to travel and take an insane amount of photographs whenever I’m exploring
someplace new. I don’t often sit still, but when I do… there’s nothing better than curling up with a good book!
What attracted you to teaching?
I knew that I wanted to be an elementary school teacher from an extremely young age and am almost embarrassed to admit to the
countless hours spent teaching all of the stuffed animals in my childhood bedroom. I absolutely love to learn and wanted to be able
to share that love and develop it in others for a lifetime by creating engaging opportunities for students to explore, design,
investigate, create, and discover. There is nothing more thrilling than seeing a child’s eyes light up when he or she learns
something new!
MARY RUTH MAGUIRE
I was born in Brooklyn, raised in East Northport and currently live in Long Beach. This is my 11th
year teaching, all of which have fortunately been at School #5. I attended Fordham University in
the Bronx for my undergraduate degree in Art History and Economics. I then went right onto
graduate school at Fordham University Lincoln Center for a degree in Childhood Education. I
started at School # 5 as a permanent substitute and I was Mrs. Martin’s leave replacement 10 years
ago in the very same classroom I am in now! I have taught the sixth, fifth and fourth grades.
What is your favorite School #5 event and why?
I just love the Walking School Bus event. It is such a simple event, but so much fun. I have been at
the same post since it began and I enjoy seeing the same families each year.

The Fourth Grade Team
Meet Our Beloved Fourth Grade Teachers!
CAROLYN KAYE
I have lived in Oceanside for most of my life- I went to school #9 as a child, I graduated from Oceanside
High School, and I have been teaching in the district for more than 25 years. I have always loved working
with children, and I feel so rewarded when I encounter former students all grown up, working as
productive members of society. School #5 is my favorite school, where I have spent the majority of my
teaching career. I find that the parents are caring and concerned, and I have had the privilege of
working with wonderful principals and teachers alike.
What do you like to do when you are not working?
Last year I was blessed with two grandchildren, to go along with my four daughters. We all love spending
family time together. Outside of school, I love reading and the beach. I love the mountains upstate,
Fire Island out east, and the Caribbean down south. I love to travel - especially where food and adventure are involved. My
husband and I worked as volunteers to rebuild a failing restaurant on an episode of Restaurant Impossible, spending two days
with celebrity chef Robert Irvine. We were on the set of Food Network's Chopped, where we befriended other celebrity chefs. We
also spent a day working as extras on the set of the CBS summer hit show Under the Dome.
KRISTIN STEA
I have been teaching at Oceanside School #5 for 17 years. During my time here I have taught grade 3
for four years. For ½ a year I was in grade 5 and the remaining years I have been in 4th grade. I love the
age of the students as well as the curriculum. The history of New York State is my favorite. I also enjoy
the math and science topics, as well as the great books and stories we read. If I had to pick my
favorite unit or lesson in 4th grade that would be simple! It would be the entire Colonial
America/American Revolution Unit. Watching my students shine on the stage during our
Revolutionary Town Meeting is one of the highlights of my year. I often joke and say when I retire I am
going to volunteer my time on the Freedom Trail in Boston, Massachusetts as a tour guide preferably
at the site of the Boston Massacre or, I may stay local and volunteer at Old Bethpage Village
Restoration. By the way, that is also my favorite school trip.
What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time I like to spend it with my family and friends. I enjoy taking spin classes at the gym and as soon as the weather is
nice I love to be at the beach and my cabana. I am a Yankee and a Ranger fan. My all-time favorite player is Derek Jeter!
What attracted you to teaching?
I have always wanted to be a teacher. I don’t think there was ever a time in my life I didn’t want to teach. I can still remember
setting up my Cabbage Patch Dolls in my playroom and playing school with them for hours.

On May 12th, students will be treated to a visit from Michael Harrold from
Jambo Productions. Michael is a photographer, writer, licensed teacher,
and world traveler. He talks about his experiences traveling the world to
promote multicultural awareness and respect. He uses photography and
artifacts to help tell his stories. He shows kids the realities of the
developing world and hopes to inspire them with an appreciation for what
they have.
I hope your kids enjoyed the shows we’ve selected to bring in this year. I
really tried to balance the educational component with fun. I thank Mrs.
Provvido and Mrs. Francone for their help selecting the shows and
coordinating the dates in their busy schedule. We managed to use every
penny budgeted for this year!

Volunteer Spotlight:Tommy
Renee Rawcliffe
Beirne
Tommy Beirne is a dedicated and hard-working part of our community. Inspired by his own dad, he strives to be the
best father he can be. Whether he is heading up Little League, serving as an Oceanside Library Board Trustee, or
finishing his second year as PTA Co-President, Tommy remains an active part of his kids’ lives, showing them firsthand,
what it means to “BE A LEADER LIKE JETER”.
Tell us about yourself.
I have two children in School #5 (Kiersten-4th grade & Dylan-2nd grade). I got involved in the PTA back at School #6 when my
daughter was in kindergarten. Currently, I am at the end of my 2-year term as the PTA Co-President at School #5. I'm pretty
much everywhere around the school; just look for the big bald guy with the sunglasses on top of his head! I'm also very involved
in the community as a Commissioner and Coach for Oceanside Little League, Trustee for the Oceanside Library, and I also
volunteer my time for other extra curricular activities and community activities my children are involved in.
What do you like most about volunteering?
What I like most about volunteering is that you get a chance to make a difference in someone’s life for the positive. Whether it's
just handing someone a drink , coaching them, or just doing behind the scenes work, there is always a memory and/or a lesson
to be taught and learned.
What is your favorite Sunday meal?
I love to cook! Especially for my family! Sundays are homemade sauce and meatball night. I always put out a big spread!
On Sundays, the whole family comes over and we hang and eat and take a break from life.
Who was your hero growing up; who inspires you today?
My Dad was my hero! He is a retired FDNY lieutenant who was one of the lucky ones to make it out. He was a great dad! He was
a single dad as well. I learned a lot over the years from him and still do to this day. I laugh because I notice the older I get, the
more I sound like him when I explain things to my kids. Even though he must have given me so many "life lesson quotes" the
one that sticks in my mind , and I try to hold up to it everyday is "You will have your ups and downs in life, but the only thing I
ask of you is to make sure you are a good father to your kids, as they grow up." This is what keeps me going everyday!
Are there any sports teams that you are rooting for this season? Do you have a favorite player?
Ha-ha. Well for those who see me walking around, or email me, you know I'm a pretty big New York Yankees Fan! My favorite
player was Derek Jeter. He was classy, and played the game and represented himself and his team with respect and dignity. I
feel this is very important, especially nowadays with children being influenced by professional athletes today. I always use him
as an example, BE a "Leader like Jeter“. LETS GO YANKEES!
What makes you smile?
My Family! Deb, Kiersten & Dylan are my driving force and foundation. They're the reason why I do what I do!
What is your best advice to parents in how they can help support the School #5 PTA.
GET INVOLVED! VOLUNTEER! CREATE MEMORIES FOR THESE KIDS! MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN SOMEONE’S LIFE! IT'S REWARDING
AND FUN!
In closing, I just wanted to thank everyone who I have come in contact with; parents, teachers, PTA members, fellow PTA copresidents. The last two years as the Co-President was very rewarding. We created so many smiles and memories for these
children. We truly have an AMAZING foundation of parents in the School #5 family! School #5 exemplifies the meaning of
"community" and "family". I am proud to say that this is my community and school.
