Orange County High School Receives National Recognition
May 27, 2015
Each year U.S. News and World Reports analyzes the performance of America’s high schools and ranks
them within their state and the nation. To determine rankings, U.S. News reviews data on over 21,000
public high schools in 50 states and the District of Columbia. High achieving schools are awarded gold,
silver or bronze medals based on their performance on state assessments and how well they prepare
students for college. In its most recent education report, U.S. News recognized Orange County High
School (OCHS) in Orange, Virginia as one of the top performing high schools in the nation.
U.S. News was most interested in four key areas as they compared the success of all high schools across
the nation whether they are public school, charter schools, or magnet schools. The four key areas are
student-teacher ratios, the college readiness of each school’s graduates, and student proficiency in both
mathematics and reading. In addition to the student-teacher ratio information, the data reviewed for
Orange County High School included state assessments (the SOLs) and the Advanced Placement (AP)
performance of Orange County High School’s students. At its conclusion, U.S. News ranked Orange
County High School among the top 100 high schools in Virginia and awarded the school a Bronze medal
nationally, ranking it among the top third of all high schools in the nation.
“This recognition is certainly a tremendous honor. To be recognized among the best for the work you do
is a wonderful thing,” stated OCHS Principal Doug Duncan. “At the same time we know we must continue
to search out new and different ways to enhance the education of our students. We are always looking
for ways to help better prepare our students for success after high school on whatever path they choose.”
Linda Carlton, director of secondary instruction, added, “It is wonderful to be recognized by U.S. News
and World Report as one of their top high schools in the U.S. and Virginia. I would like to compliment Mr.
Duncan, his staff, and the students of OCHS for earning this recognition which is a testament to their hard
work and pursuit of academic excellence.”
