The Waratahs Rugby Club Celebrating 75 Seasons (Formed in 1940) OLD BOYS ASSOCIATION Waratah Oval in Newcastle won’t be quite the same this coming June long weekend! The famous local suburban sporting ground will see old rugby players running around in multi-coloured clothing, funny painted faces, giant sumo wrestlers - and even a game of premier rugby. President of The Waratahs Rugby Old Boys Association, Mark Queenan, said the attractions were part of a Family Rugby Day being organised by the club for its Diamond Jubilee celebrations. “We’re mixing family fun with the sport of rugby at Waratah Oval on the Saturday (6 June) as we celebrate our 75th anniversary,” said Mark. “The Waratahs had already planned a lot of attractions for the June long weekend as part of its celebrations but a deferred rugby match against Nelson Bay has added to the attractions. “The Family Rugby Day, for which we have invited the Old Boys to pull on their boots and have a game of rugby as one of the features (see above), is now being combined with the premier round against Nelson Bay. “The Old Boys game will be played under Golden Oldies rules and we are attracting a lot of former players to the ground for what is sure to be great day.” Mark said members of The Waratahs were invited to bring along their family as there will be plenty of attractions for children. He said face painting, the opportunity to be a sumo wrestler, plaster painting and a jumping castle would keep young members of the family fully engaged.
