MARY’S CHURCH Our Parish Mission Founded in 1833, Old St. Mary’s parish is the first Catholic parish in the Chicago area. Guided for more than a century by the vision of the Paulist Fathers, we are a diverse and welcoming community dedicated to serving the spiritual needs of the South Loop and greater Chicago area. As a unified Church and School community, Old St. Mary’s Parish promotes the mission of the Paulist Fathers to welcome those who have been away from the church, to build bridges of respect and collaboration with people of diverse backgrounds and religions, and to promote justice and healing in our society. Thank You! April 19, 2015 Old St. Mary’s is wheelchair accessible. Large print missalettes are available near the entrance. Please return them after Mass. Special hosts are available in the sacristy for those who are gluten intolerant. Do you have difficulty walking to the front of the church for communion? Please ask an usher to let the communion ministers know where you are so the ministers can bring communion to you. Receiving the Body of Christ is too important to miss out. The ministers do scan the congregation, so if you forget to let an usher know, put your hand up so they can see you. We want to accommodate you. PARISH STAFF REV. Mystagogy is an ancient word that simply means “unfolding the mysteries.” During the Easter season, the Church unfolds the mysteries of Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection so that the newly baptized, along with the entire community of believers, can grasp more fully the meaning of the paschal mystery. Today’s scriptures offer a lesson in mystagogy for us all. Jesus’ place in salvation history is recounted by Saint Peter in the first reading and interpreted by Jesus himself in the Gospel passage. Like students who sit at the feet of their master, let us gather around the table of God’s word, asking God to open our hearts and minds to a renewed sense of the meaning of the paschal mystery in our lives. From Saint Margaret Mary Sunday Missal, © J. S. Paluch Company We welcome the following new parishioners to the Old St. Mary’s community. Richard Rosengarten & Margaret Mitchell Francesco Schiavulli & Jamie Lynn Nicastro During the month of March we welcomed the following individual into the community of the faithful through the sacrament of Baptism. Michael John Novak From the Pastor’s Desk Dear member of the Old St. Mary community, Did you know that we have parish boundaries? They are 18th St. to the south, Lake Michigan to the east and the Chicago River to the north and west. That is quite an area! Of course, Old St. Peter’s Shrine Church is also within those boundaries and serves many people, but it is technically not a parish. Also we know that many people living within our boundaries attend Old St. Patrick’s, Saint James, Holy Name Cathedral, or some other parish to which they are drawn. We know, too, that many who live outside of our official boundaries attend OSM. They are most welcome here. It is helpful to us, however, to know who our parishioners really are. So whether you live within the parish boundaries or not, if you attend OSM regularly, please register. This can be done online at our website www.oldstmarys.com or by using a hardcopy form available in the Commons. There are many exciting events that happen within our parish boundaries which would be of special interest to our parishioners. One such event coming up is Sr. Helen Prejean’s April 23 appearance at the Chicago Public Library. I hope many of our parishioners turn out to see and hear her. I have heard her speak in the past and can attest that she is a dynamic presenter. You will be glad you went. You will see an item with more details elsewhere in this week’s bulletin. We will be keeping an eye out for other events that take place in our neighborhood that we think would interest our parishioners Sincerely, DID YOU ATTEND ST. DOROTHY CHURCH OR SCHOOL?? St. Dorothy Church (450 E 78th St. Chicago) will celebrate its 100th Jubilee in June 2016! They are looking for information on past members or graduates — And looking for memorabilia from pre-1960 especially. Please contact them with your information or materials. The jubilee website (with email) is www.stdorothyjubilee.org or call 773-651-7000. Page Four OLD ST. MARY’S CHURCH Sr. Helen Prejean, CSJ, author of Dead Man Walking, will be speaking at the Chicago Public Library, 400 S. State St. on Thursday, April 23 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Sr. Helen’s book, first published in 1993, inspired the film of the same name. Over 20 years later and with capital punishment still legal in 32 states and for some federal crimes, Sr. Helen’s account of both the plight of the condemned and the rage for the bereaved is as enlightening and devastating as it ever has been. The event is free, but seating in the Cindy Pritzker Auditorium at the Library is first come, first serve. 385 is maximum capacity. If you would like more background information on Sr. Helen, you can go to her website at www.srhelen.org. Students from Old St. Mary’s school and our Religious Education program will receive the sacrament of Communion for the first time next Sunday, April 26 at 2 PM. There will be 60 children who will begin receiving this sacrament that reminds us of what Jesus Christ did for us in his life, death and resurrection. The Sacrament of Holy Communion is the third of the Sacraments of Initiation. It is called a sacrament of initiation because, like Baptism and Confirmation, it brings us into the fullness of our life in Christ. The LiƩle Sisters of the Poor will be speaking briefly a er communion at all of our Masses this weekend. The Li le Sisters are a community devoted to the care of the elderly poor. They were founded in France by St. Jeanne Jugan in 1839. Today they operate nursing homes in many countries. In Chicago, they operate St. Mary’s Home on N. Lakewood Ave. Their visit with us is one of a series of special events we are having at Old St. Mary’s in honor of the members of religious communi es who live and/or work near us during this Year of Consecrated Life. April 19, 2015 YEAR OF SACRAMENTS • ONE WORD AT A TIME Suffer The Martyrology is a thick book that contains entries for every day of the year. Each day lists the men and women, boys and girls across two thousand years who have given their lives in witness to their faith in Jesus Christ. It is an impressive assembly of countless witnesses to the faith. Most probably, we will not be called to shed our blood in witness to our faith. We will, most definitely, have to suffer in some way because of our faith in Jesus Christ. In the Gospels, Jesus clearly tells his disciples that there is a cost in following him. Of course, they will be joyful and full of hope in him, but they will also endure the difficulties of misunderstanding, contempt, perhaps even persecution. In short, suffering is an inevitable part of discipleship. To support us in our suffering, he gives us his Holy Spirit in the sacrament of Confirmation.
