OLD ST. MARY’S CHURCH
Our Parish Mission
Founded in 1833, Old St. Mary’s parish is the first
Catholic parish in the Chicago area. Guided for
more than a century by the vision of the Paulist
Fathers, we are a diverse and welcoming community
dedicated to serving the spiritual needs of the South
Loop and greater Chicago area.
As a unified Church and School community, Old St.
Mary’s Parish promotes the mission of the Paulist
Fathers to welcome those who have been away from
the church, to build bridges of respect and
collaboration with people of diverse backgrounds
and religions, and to promote justice and healing in
our society.

Old St. Mary’s is
wheelchair accessible.
Large print missalettes are available near
the entrance. Please return them after Mass.
Special hosts are available in the
sacristy for those who are gluten
intolerant.
Do you have difficulty walking to
the front of the church for
communion?
Please ask an usher to let the communion ministers know
where you are so the ministers can bring communion to
you. Receiving the Body of Christ is too important to miss
out. The ministers do scan the congregation, so if you
forget to let an usher know, put your hand up so they can
see you. We want to accommodate you.

GOD’S WORD TODAY
Today’s readings are some of the most reassuring
and hope-filled in the Lectionary. When we hear
words such as “love” and “joy” used over and
over again in a set of readings, it is a signal for us
simply to thank God for the incredible gift given
to this world in and through Jesus Christ. Here,
and only here, can we find a fountain of love and
joy that will never run dry. Here, and only here,
can we find the kind of hope that can pull us out
of even the deepest despair. As the word of God
is proclaimed this day, let us be filled with
thanksgiving for the inestimable gift that comes to
us in Christ Jesus.
From Saint Margaret Mary Sunday Missal, © J. S. Paluch Company
I have been writing to you about the
Church’s Year of Consecrated Life and
how it relates to the Paulist Fathers
and to Old St. Mary’s. This week I
want to address the second aim for
the year, which is to invite religious
communities “to live the present with
passion” and, by extension, for our
Paulist staffed parish to do the same.
The Paulist founder, Isaac Hecker, was
very much a religious seeker. He
recognized a hunger in his soul that
was satisfied when he discovered
Catholic Christianity, converted to the
faith, and integrated its teachings into
his life. Then it became his lifelong
task to proclaim the “good fit” of
Catholicism to his fellow citizens.
Today, there are still many “seekers,”
more even than in Hecker’s day.
Those of us who embrace the Catholic
faith as our spiritual anchor know that
many would find deeper meaning to
their lives if they understood the faith
as we do. There is good reason to
have passion for the Paulist mission in
our day! The need for it is greater
than ever.
Certainly, the community served by
Old St. Mary’s in the Loop and South
Loop has many spiritual needs. There
are many good people in our
neighborhoods and yet many of them
hunger for deeper meaning, for
spiritual fulfillment. We, as a parish,
need to live our faith in a way that
makes it attractive to our neighbors.
We have much to offer. Can we offer
it with fervor and joy? Yes, we can!

OLD ST. MARY’S CHURCH
YEAR OF SACRAMENTS • ONE WORD AT A TIME
Connect
The Eucharist, we firmly
believe, makes present to us the
Body and Blood of the Lord in
his self-sacrificing love. And by
receiving him in Holy
Communion, we connect
ourselves with him. In fact,
this is the sustaining and
life-giving connection of our lives. The Eucharist
enables us to have this personal connection with
the Lord. It would be a mistake, however, to think
that it stops here.
The Eucharist connects us not only with the Lord
but with each other in him. That is the gist of
Paul’s important words to the church in Corinth:
“Because there is one bread, we who are many are
one body, for we all partake of the one bread.” (1
Corinthians 10:17) Looking at our connection
with other people through the Eucharist radically
changes how we see our relationships, even our
closest ones. We discover the depth and power of
those relationships because we are connected in
him who holds all of us in his love.
