We, the Parish of Our Lady of the Rosary, are a pilgrim church. Under the
mantle of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we grow as a people of God following Jesus,
celebrating the Eucharist, living apostolic service, continuing faith formation
and Marian devotions. We strive to bring the joy of the gospel and imitate Jesus
through compassion, mercy and love, especially for the poor and marginalized. We seek to be faithful stewards providing a heart and home for all. Our Lady of the Rosary

While Holy Communion may only be received by
prepared Catholics, our non-Catholic guests are
welcome to receive a special blessing from the priest
during distribution. Simply cross your arms on your
chest as you approach the priest.

An old beggar lay on his
deathbed. His last words were to
his youngest son who had been his
constant companion during his begging
trips. “Dear son,” he said, “I have
nothing to give you except a cotton bag
and a dirty bronze bowl which I got in
my younger days from the junk yard of
a rich lady.” After his father’s death,
the boy continued begging, using the
bowl his father had given him. One
day a gold merchant dropped a coin in
the boy’s bowl and he was surprised to
hear a familiar clinking sound. “Let
me check your bowl,” the merchant
said. To his great surprise, he found
that the beggar’s bowl was made of
pure gold. “My dear young man,” he
said, “why do you waste your time
begging? You are a rich man. That
bowl of yours is worth at least thirty
thousand dollars.” We Christians are
often like this beggar boy who failed to
recognize and appreciate the value of his
bowl. We fail to appreciate the infinite
worth of the Holy Spirit living within
each of us, sharing His gifts and fruits
and charisms with us. On this major
feast day we are invited to experience
and appreciate the transforming,
sanctifying and strengthening presence
of the Holy Spirit within us. This
is also a day to renew the promises
made to God during our Baptism and
Confirmation, to profess our faith, and

Baptism Class
The next Baptism class will be this Thursday,
May 28th at 6:30 PM in the St. Gianna Room of
the Pastoral Center. Parents wishing to have their
child baptized and confirmed adults who have been
asked to be a godparent must attend this program,
which is regularly offered by all the parishes.

Liturgy Background
How beautiful is the thought that the
Holy Spirit lives within us! Saint Paul
reminds the Corinthian community of this
fact when he asks, “Do you not know that
you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit
dwells in you?” (I Corinthians 3:16). It is the
Holy Spirit who develops our intimacy with
God. “God has sent the Spirit of His Son
into our hearts crying, ‘Abba! Father!’ (Gal
4:6). “God’s love has been poured into
our hearts by the Holy Spirit who has been
given to us” (Romans 5:5). “No one can say,
‘Jesus is Lord,’ except by the Holy Spirit” (I
Corinthians 12:3). Moreover, we know that
it is the Holy Spirit who teaches us to pray
(Romans 8:26). By the power of the Spirit,
we also know the Lord Jesus through His
Church. Pentecost Sunday is the birth date
of the Church. It is the Holy Spirit who
enlivens, enlightens, guides, and sanctifies
the Church. We know Jesus through the
Sacramental Mysteries of the Church. The
Holy Spirit is at the heart of the sacramental
life of the Church. Baptism, Confirmation
and Holy Orders are the Sacramental
Mysteries in which people receive the seal of
the Holy Spirit. It would be impossible for
us to receive Jesus in the Eucharist without
the descent of the Holy Spirit at the Epiclesis
of the Divine Liturgy. Even forgiveness of
sins comes through the Holy Spirit (John
20:21-23). The Holy Spirit both confirmed
the apostles in Holy Orders as priests and
empowered them to forgive sins by His
power, work which He continues today in
each of our priests.
1) We need to permit the Holy Spirit
to direct our lives: i) By constantly
remembering and appreciating his
Holy Presence within us, especially
through the sacraments of Baptism and
Confirmation. ii) By fortifying ourselves
with the help of the Spirit against all
types of temptations. iii) By seeking the
assistance of the Spirit in our thoughts,
words, and deeds, and in the breaking
of our evil habits. iv) By listening to
the voice of the Holy Spirit speaking
to us through the Bible and through the
good counsel of others. v) By fervently
praying for the gifts, fruits and charisms of
the Holy Spirit. vi) By renewing our
lives through the anointing of the Holy
Spirit. Life in the Holy Spirit is a life of
commitment, of sacrifice, and of joy. It is a
call to love as Jesus loved, not counting the
cost. As Saint Paul exhorts us, “Walk by
the Spirit and do not gratify the desires of
the flesh. If we live by the Spirit, let us also
walk by the Spirit” (Galatians 5:16, 25). 2) We need to cultivate the spirit of
forgiveness. The feast of the Pentecost
offers us the chance of looking at
the role which forgiveness should play
in our dealings with others. Thus we
are challenged to examine our sense
of compassion, patience, tolerance and
magnanimity. Learning to forgive is a
lifelong task, but the Holy Spirit is with
us to make us agents of forgiveness. If
we are prepared on this day of Pentecost
toreceive the Holy Spirit into our lives, we
can have confidence that our lives will be
marked by the Spirit of forgiveness.
3) We need to observe Pentecost every
day. “It will always be Pentecost in
the church,” affirmed Oscar Romero,
Archbishop of El Salvador, on

Pentecost Sunday 1978, “provided the
church lets the beauty of the Holy Spirit
shine forth from her countenance. When
the church ceases to let her strength rest
on the power from above which Christ
promised her and which he gave her on
that day, and when the church leans rather
on the weak forces of the power or wealth
of this earth, then the church ceases to be
newsworthy. The church will be fair to
see, perennially young, attractive in every
age, as long as she is faithful to the Spirit
that floods her and she reflects that Spirit
through her communities, through her
pastors, through her very life.” Archbishop
Romero’s words remind us -- as does
today’s Gospel -- that Pentecost is not just
one day, butevery day. Without breath,
there is no life. Without the Spirit, the
church is a field of dry, dead bones. Fulton
J. Sheen once said about the Church,
«Even though we are God›s chosen people,
we often behave more like God’s frozen
people--frozen in our prayer life, frozen
in the way we relate with one another,
frozen in the way we celebrate our faith.” Today is a great day to ask the Holy Spirit
to rekindle in us the spirit of new life and
enthusiasm, the fire of God’s love. Let us
repeat Cardinal Newman’s favorite little
prayer, “Come Holy Spirit:”
“Come Holy Spirit Make our ears to hear Make our eyes to see Make our mouths to speak Make our hearts to seek Make our hands to reach out And touch the world with your love. AMEN.”

Padre Pio Devotions
Monday, June 1st
The Padre Pio Group will meet at 6:35 PM in the
Church for Recitation of the Rosary with Mass
at 7:00 PM followed by Prayers & Benediction.
Anyone is welcome to join us in Padre Pio
Devotions on the First Monday of the Month.
Our Lady’s Gifts will be open in the evening for
this event.
School Of The Madeleine is the Catholic
elementary school of St. Mary Magdalene
Parish. The school is located in the Mission Bay/
Bay Park area and serves students from preschool
through grade 8. The school offers special
programs in accelerated math and Spanish in grades
5-8. Madeleine also has a computer and brand new
science lab. Applications for the 2015-2016 school
year are now being accepted. Currently there are
openings in kindergarten through 7th grades. For

Resolved To Serve This Year?
The Ignatian Volunteer Corps is currently
accepting applications for retired or semi-retired
women and men. Volunteers for our Jesuitsponsored program have the opportunity to serve
the needs of people who are poor, to work for a
more just society, and to grow deeper in Christian
faith by reflecting and praying in the Ignatian
tradition. Volunteers serve eight or 16 hours a week,
and meet monthly with a Spiritual Reflector and

Beginning Experience Weekend

From time to time the office receives requests to
have certain events or information announced to
the parish. Space permitting, we are always happy
to accommodate these requests. If you or your
organization is ever in need of this service, please
satisfy the following criteria:
• emailed to the editor at [email protected]
• pdf & jpg formats are acceptable, but we still
must have the plain text as well (special layouts
are considered but subject to available space)
• submitted at least 10 days prior to desired date,
which equates to the 2nd Thursday before the
Sunday you are considering (during holiday
seasons or special office scheduling, this
deadline is subject to change in order to meet
our transmission date)
• all ads are presented to the pastor for approval
and should be relevant to the Church and the
Parish Family
Perpetual Membership
Every week a Mass is celebrated in our Church for
all those inscribed in our Perpetual Membership. A

Wine Challenge
The Nuova Gen committee is hard at work
planning our next Ferragosto celebration, happening
this Summer on August 15th. There is a golden
opportunity for all of Little Italy to assist them
with the success of this event going on now. They
are looking to us to see who can bring in the most
donated bottles of wine for the night of the big
event. Please bring your donations by the Pastoral
Center during normal business hours!

Reconciliation (Confession) ~ Saturdays from 4:00 to
5:00 pm, weekdays 11:30 am to 12:00 noon, 30 minutes
prior to each Mass (must approach the altar and request
from the priest).
Matrimony ~ Notice is required 9 (nine) months in
advance and before any other arrangements are made (i.e.
hall rental, invitation printing, etc). Contact Timothy.
Christian Education Classes (CCD) ~ Offered to
all registered parish students attending public school.
Kindergarten through Confirmation attend on Sundays from
9 to 11 am. Registered private school students wishing to
receive Communion & Confirmation must attend the two
year program for each Sacrament.
R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) ~
Instructions for Adults desiring to receive the Sacraments of
Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist meet Tuesdays at

To be modestly and tastefully dressed is a sign of respect for God, for our selves, and for others.
It’s a false assumption that God does not care how we dress. Jesus told us “Whatever you do to the least of my brothers,
you do it to me.” If our attire is indecently provocative (short shorts, strapless, backless, spaghetti strap dresses/tops, or
displaying cleavage), displaying unwholesome graphics (skulls, advertisements, scantly clad people) or tattered, it becomes
offensive to our brothers and sisters who are worshipping the Lord and therefore offensive to God’s Majesty.
Ask this question: “Would you dress this way before God?” You are! He sees everything and you are in His house.
