A Message from Erica Lee Hi Everyone! My name is Erica, and I will be the new JUMP intern for this upcoming school year! I'm an Ohioan majoring in Neuroscience with a minor in Visual Arts. I love painting, cats, and anything related to medicine especially the brain. My friends tend to describe me as considerate, outgoing, and bouncy. I'm so excited to get started and meet all of the wonderful JUMP members! What is your favorite book? I have many books that I love; I can't pick just one as my favorite. In general, I tend to love fantasy books like Harry Potter and retellings of fairy tales like the Once Upon a Time series. I also enjoy mystery novels and anything classic like The Great Gatsby or Pride and Prejudice. Where is one place you want to travel that you have not yet been? Singapore! My mother is from Singapore, but we haven't been there since I was a baby. As a port, Singapore brings together a wide variety of cultures and nationalities. I would love to explore it from coast to coast and finally meet all of my extended family. What has been the biggest obstacle that you have overcome? The biggest obstacle I've overcome was the transition from a small public high school to Johns Hopkins. I struggled during my first semester to adjust to the culture and curriculum; however, I found a sense of belonging within Pi Beta Phi that truly helped me succeed in the following semesters. What is the hardest thing you've done? Filling out my applications for college was perhaps the hardest thing I've ever done. I find it very difficult to write about myself in general and the added pressure of wanting to get into a prestigious school made it even harder. I was fortunate that my family helped me through the process; I wouldn't have been able to succeed without them. What's an interesting quirk about you? By weight, I carry more food than anything when I'm travelling. What advise do you have for JUMP students? I advise JUMP students to step outside of their comfort zones and try something new. Whether it's meeting new people or signing up for a dance class when you think you're a terrible dancer, reaching beyond your comfort zone will help you grow as a person and perhaps even change your perspective on life. You might find that you really enjoy underwater basket weaving or that you feel at home in a sorority. Branch out, you never know what you'll discover. What about JUMP attracts you? The diversity of JUMP's members was what attracted me to JUMP. As someone of mixed Asian and Caucasian descent, I find it hard at times to label myself or meet people who have faced similar experiences. JUMP provides a place for people to share common experiences and relate to each other. The JUMP community is very open, and I look forward to joining it. What is your vision about the future of JUMP? I see JUMP becoming not just a home away from home for its members, but a program that will unite its members in a spirited, engaging community. I wish to see JUMP become letters proudly worn by members as we work to create a better experience within JUMP and in the community of Baltimore. JUMP is a wonderful program, and I hope to see it become even more so. What do you want to take away from JUMP? Over the course of my time as a JUMP intern and member, I hope to grow as a person and create lasting memories with the people I will meet. I hope to create friendships that will last a lifetime and to find ways to see my vision for JUMP come to fruition. If I can leave JUMP a better program than when I start, I am confident that my time at JUMP will be one of the best experiences of my undergraduate career. What is one thing that excites you most about the JUMP team? I am most excited to get to know everyone and form friendships with them. I already feel very welcomed by the JUMP team, and I look forward to working with them to create the best JUMP experience for everyone. JUMP SOM Intern Get to know Marcela Sierra-Arce! A Message from Marcela Sierra-Arce As a brief intro, I am a rising sophomore at Hopkins. I am originally from Miami, Florida, but my family recently moved to San Antonio, Texas. I am a neuroscience and psychology double major, and you can usually find me involved in some type of research or community service. I look forward to working with the JUMP team and meeting all the new JUMP members! What is your favorite book? The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri Where is one place you want to travel that you have not yet been? Bora Bora What is the hardest thing you've done? Coming from a tight-knit community, the hardest thing I have done coming into college is become independent. In college, you will learn a lot about yourself and your limits. Also, you should know that it is okay to be alone sometimes. Do you have any Advice for JUMP students? The most valuable advice I can give is to take time out of your schedule to try new things and to make sure to take some time for yourself. I'm not going to lie, to succeed at Hopkins you will need to dedicate a great amount of your time to studying. However, you don't want to or need to burn yourself out either. It is always important to keep a balance between your academics and extracurriculars. What about JUMP attracts you? I most like that JUMP provides us with so many resources to succeed at Hopkins. I find the mentoring system to be especially helpful in keeping freshman on track throughout the year. What is your vision about the future of JUMP? I wish to be able to contribute to JUMP's legacy of providing networking and growth opportunities to underrepresented minority students as well as ensuring a successful college transition. What is one thing that excites you most about JUMP? I am excited about building lasting relationships with the members of the JUMP team. JUMP SNMA Scholarship Winner Here are a few words from Hemen Muleta about her SNMA experience. From Left to Right: Michele Kihara, Hemen Muleta, Alejandra Rodriguez, Sophia Ottleben I can't express how fortunate I feel for the opportunity I had to attend the SNMA conference. As a current applicant to medical school, the conference was exactly what I needed to encourage and support me during the application process. One of the most helpful parts of the conference was a medical school fair which allowed me to network with many medical students and admissions representatives, allowing me to understand the environment in different medical schools and which ones I'd like to apply to. In addition, I was able to participate in both mock interview and personal statement revision sessions conducted by physicians. The conference was also a great opportunity to get to know the Hopkins medical students, create bonds with them, and get helpful tips . Thanks to the conference, I can now count on several medical students to further revise my personal statement and other parts of the application. Even more, the conference offered many workshops, from suturing and MCAT tips, to A Day in the Life of a Doctor. Having the opportunity to hear and interact with successful doctors of color was extremely important and inspirational for me. I remember at one point during the conference thinking to myself that "I too had the potential to become a physician". Of course, the SNMA conference is not just business. I had an absolutely wonderful time exploring the wonderful city of New Orleans, trying foods from alligator to gumbo, catching the beautiful sounds of Jazz on the streets, and browsing the famous French Market. Thank you JUMP and everyone else who made this trip possible! ~Hemen Muleta MILESTONES Thursday April 23, 2015 Time: 5:30-7:30pm Armstrong Medical Education Building Celebrate with us!
