A state of ketosis is when the liver produces ketone
bodies and uses them as a source of energy. Ketones
bodies are natural biochemicals produced by the
liver and are made when the body breaks down fat
for energy.
Most people believe that in order to lose as
much fat as possible, they need to restrict their
carbohydrate intake as much as they can. While
urinary ketone excretion means that body fat is
being excreted causing fat loss, very high levels
of ketones (‘large’ reading on your ketostix) make
your blood more acidic and overburden your
kidneys.

Anecdotally, higher levels of ketones may actually

block the release of free fatty acids from fat cells.

Test yourself in the morning
How To Avoid ‘‘Fruity’’ Breath
Ketone concentrations are generally
higher in the morning since urine is
more concentrated and lower in the
evening. For this reason, it is advisable
that you test yourself in the morning.
Ketogenic “fruity” breath is not
pleasant for most people. To avoid
this, drink a lot of water, mint tea
and make sure you eat foods rich in
electrolytes. Avoid too many mints
chewing gum, as it may put you out
of ketosis; there is probably hidden
carbs affecting your blood sugar!
Daily Fluctuations
Keep in mind there are daily
fluctuations caused by changes in
hormone levels. Don’t get discouraged!

Extra Virgin Olive Oil Recommended
Another aspect that affects the level
of ketones is the amount of fat in your
diet. Some of you may show higher
