General Information
The skills and knowledge required by a competent worker are described in terms of
Competency Standard Units. For the electrical industry, these units are laid down in
the National Electrotechnology Competency Standards.
To be assessed as ‘competent’ against National Electrotechnology Competency
Standards, individuals need to demonstrate they have –
 acquired specified essential knowledge and associated skills (EKAS)
and
 undertaken related workplace functions.
The assessment of specified essential knowledge and associated skills is carried out
during the off-the-job component of an individuals’ training, normally through the
assessment of Essential Knowledge and Associated Skills Learning Specifications
whilst undertaking the qualification at a College/Skill Centre.
Work experience records provide evidence that the applicant has, over a period of
time, carried out relevant workplace activity (e.g. install …) including each element
(plan, carry out, complete) across the range of equipment or procedures
autonomously and to specified requirements. That is, these records can be used to
make judgments about the applicant’s on-the-job performance.
The purpose of this document is to provide a mechanism the employer can use to
ensure that the apprentice/applicant has exposure to all of the experience
required by the training package to be deemed competent.
This document will be attached to the apprentice/applicants’ training contract
and monitored by the RTO on a six monthly basis.
