Sunday of the Passion - Palm Sunday
The first and second readings and psalm are the same this Sunday every year:
Christ emptying himself of divine power and protection, willingly becoming
vulnerable to those who struck him and put him to death. Mark’s passion story
begins with an unnamed woman anointing his head, perhaps to proclaim him
Messiah, and Jesus saying she has anointed him beforehand for burial.
Gathering

In the gathering area we hear of Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem -
L: Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!
C: Hosanna in the highest!

The Gospel is read.
L: This is the good news.

*PROCESSION1 WITH PALMS
Follow the worships leaders in a ritualized procession suitable for weather
conditions. Please join us in singing:
“Jesus is coming – pave the way with branches – Jesus is coming – Hosanna!”

4 – Release for the captives…
5 – Debts are forgiven…
As we process into the sanctuary:

The PROCESSION has been a liturgical (worship-related) activity throughout most of Church
history. The procession recalls Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday) and his
procession to Calvary (the “way of the cross": Passion Sunday and Good Friday), but is not
limited to these two events in the life of Christ. Bringing the gifts to the table at the offertory is a
procession. Liturgical dance is a form of procession. Often choirs process. People process.
Procession can be an act of solemnity (e.g., a funeral procession) or an act of celebration (e.g., a
procession to Baptism). On this Sunday of Palm and Passion the procession of solemnity and
celebration face off. Jesus ironically enters Jerusalem triumphantly, like a king might, but the story
shifts painfully to his eventual procession to the cross. We are invited to join in this tension,
keeping in mind that the ultimate procession from death to life is yet to come!

All are welcome at the table. After you have received the bread, you may dip it

you may eat the bread and then drink from the last cup which is a common cup of
wine. Children who do not yet commune may come forward for a blessing.

Announcements
Easter Breakfast – The youth will be serving an Easter Breakfast on Sunday, April 5,
starting at 9:00am and serving until 10:00am. A variety of egg dishes will be served,
along with fruit, muffins and juice. A freewill donation is requested and all proceeds will
go towards their trip to Detroit for the ELCA Youth Gathering in July. Their goal is to
raise $1000. A Thrivent Action team has been formed and will help provide funds for the
food served and for decorations.
No Sunday School on Easter. There will be no Sunday School on Easter Sunday, April
5, at 9:00am. Please join us for the Easter Breakfast (see above).
Choir. No choir April 1. On April 2 (Maunday Thursday) Choir meets at 6:15pm. Even
though there is no Wednesday connections on April 8, Choir will meet that night at
7:00pm (note the earlier start time.) The last choir meeting of the year will be May 13.
March Mission of the Month – CES & MN FoodShare. Today is your last chance to
make a financial contribution to CES during this Campaign. MN FoodShare will multiply
all food and cash donations received during March. Please make your check out to OSLC
and note CES on the memo line or on your envelope. Thanks for supporting CES during

Benefit for Our Saviour’s Community Service: Caritas Vocal Ensemble will present a
concert on behalf of OSCS on Sunday, April 19, at 3:00pm, at Lake of the Isles Lutheran
Church, 2020 West Lake of the Isles Parkway, Minneapolis. Admission is free, and a free

will offering will be taken to support the work of OSCS. Light refreshments will be
served. Please come, and bring your friends. This concert is suitable for all ages. Caritas,
a nonprofit, offers a capella chamber music from virtually every genre – madrigals and
folk tunes, sacred, pop and international, and more.

Hospitality: for Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil, we need lots of
