Computed Tomography (CT)
Computed Axial Tomography (CT or CAT) is a computer-enhanced X-Ray study that
produces images of the inside of your body. It can be used to evaluate the head,
blood vessels, neck, chest, abdomen/pelvis, and bones and joints.
With one of the newest CT scanners available – the GE Light-Speed Ultra – Mayfair
Diagnostics can create detailed images of almost any organ or bone.
CT imaging is one of the best tools for studying the chest and abdomen because
it provides detailed, cross-sectional views of all types of tissue. Often, too, it is the
preferred method for diagnosing many different cancers (including lung, liver and
pancreatic cancer) since the images allow a physician to confirm the presence
of a tumor and measure its size, precise location and the extent of the tumor’s
involvement with other nearby tissue. CT is also invaluable in diagnosing and treating
spinal problems and injuries to the hands, feet and other skeletal structures because it
can clearly show even very small bones as well as surrounding tissues such as muscle
and blood vessels.
Physicians often use CT imaging to plan and properly administer radiation treatments
for tumors, plan surgery, measure bone mineral density for the detection of
osteoporosis, or quickly identify injuries to the liver, spleen, kidneys or other internal
organs in cases of trauma.
3
Coronary CT Angiography
Mayfair Diagnostics is pleased to offer Alberta’s first private Coronary CT Angiography,
or CCTA – a simple, non-invasive method of examining the coronary vessels that supply blood to the heart. Because CCTA uses Computed Tomography (CT) technology,
the procedure is precise, painless, quick, and delivers very accurate results.
Starting at age 45 for men and 55 for women, individuals should consider a coronary
angiography scan to determine their calcified/non-calcified plaque levels. Screening
is especially important for those with increased risk factors, including family history
of coronary artery disease, hypertension or risky behavior like smoking or inactivity.
Furthermore, CCTA can discover signs of heart disease that would be invisible to
EKG’S, stress tests, heart scans (calcium scoring) and even cardiac catheterizations.
Cardiovascular disease is the single greatest health problem in
Canada and the rest of the developed world. Health Canada suggests 37% of Canadian men and 41% of women will eventually die
of some form of cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, eight in ten
With advances in medical research, I’m aware, now more than ever, that
women are increasingly at risk for heart disease, a condition which was typically
thought to be predominantly found in men.
Canadians have at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease,
and 11% have three or more risk factors.
My health means everything to me, so of course I will take the steps necessary
to maintain it. This is why Coronary CT Angiography is the ideal choice in
preventative screening.

The Virtual Colonoscopy
If identified early enough, polyps in the colon – the precursors to cancer – can be
removed before they become cancerous.
Although the key to surviving colorectal cancer is early detection, the most common
diagnostic method – the conventional colonoscopy – is invasive, sometimes incomplete
and occasionally complicated by other risk factors. Always on the leading edge of
radiology and patient care, Mayfair Diagnostics offers the Virtual Colonoscopy (also
called CT Colonography), which overcomes the risks associated with conventional
colonoscopy. Major international research hospitals are championing the procedure as
being at least as accurate as the conventional method in detecting clinically significant
polyps and masses, with the added benefit of not requiring invasive endoscopy.
Routine screening of the colon (every five years) should begin at age 50 (age 40 for
individuals with a family history of colorectal cancer or other diseases of the bowel).
According to the Canadian Cancer Society, colorectal cancer strikes
one in 14 Canadian men and one in 15 Canadian women. Sadly,
approximately one in 30 will eventually die of the disease, even
though the vast majority of these deaths are preventable.
7
My life right now is exactly where I want it. Why wouldn’t I do everything in my
power to make it last?
My family history puts me at risk of colorectal cancer. When I turned 40 and my doctor
recommended screening, he told me about the Virtual Colonoscopy – a less invasive
but equally effective alternative to the traditional procedure. The leading edge of
medical technology: I like that idea.
The Lung Scan
After quitting smoking, early detection may be your best defense against lung
cancer. Researchers have demonstrated that routine screening reveals most lung
cancers while they are potentially curable. In a Cornell study, 90% of the patients
whose cancers were found during screening and who opted for surgical removal
were still living eight years later.
The Lung Scan is very accurate in detecting small lung cancers before they become
symptomatic or before they become visible on standard chest X-rays. Early detection of lung cancers can mean a longer life and, in many cases, a cure. These scans
should be considered for individuals with a history of heavy smoking or exposure
to second-hand smoke.
The Canadian Cancer Society estimated that in 2007, 23,300
Canadians would be diagnosed with lung cancer, and 19,900
would die of it. Though it is the most preventable of all cancers,
lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death for both
men and women.
9
Something to live for? That’s an understatement!
The older I get, the more I appreciate how richly rewarding my life really is. I know I
can’t change my past, but I can certainly take positive steps today to ensure my future
is healthy and happy and that I’m around to enjoy the great gifts life has given me.
Health Assessment Scans
By pinpointing areas of concern before they become problematic, Mayfair Diagnostics’
Health Assessment Scans can help circumvent disability from heart attack, lung and
colon cancer, and other serious illnesses. We designed our medical imaging tests to
detect diseases before they cause symptoms and while they can still be treated to
improve your health.
We offer four Health Assessment packages:
• Mayfair ASSURANCE includes Heart, Lung Scans and Virtual Colonoscopy.
• Mayfair PREMIER includes Heart, Lung Scans and a diagnostics CT scan of the
abdomen and pelvis. This examination is only offered to patients with clinical
symptoms in the abdominal or pelvic areas. It requires oral and intravenous contrast.
• Mayfair ESSENTIAL includes Coronary CT Angiography and Virtual Colonoscopy.
• Mayfair COMPREHENSIVE includes the Mayfair PREMIER plus a Virtual Colonoscopy.
“The first wealth is health.”
The best thing about being “50 something”? That’s easy: the wisdom that comes
with experience.
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson 1803-1882
Suddenly, just by virtue of being 50, we’re “at risk” for just about everything. But we’ve
learned, over the years, that the best way to deal with risk is to meet it head on. Knowing
exactly where we stand with respect to our health really helps us sleep at night.
12
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
A Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan may be your doctor’s most effective tool
in assessing the severity and determining the most effective treatment of delicate
injuries in bones and softer tissues like muscle and cartilage.
The technology, which uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce very
clear images of the human anatomy, is an excellent tool for diagnosing diseases of the
brain, spine, skeleton, abdomen and pelvis. MRI is more detailed than conventional
technologies like X-Ray.
As an example of MRI’s effectiveness in diagnosing sports-related
injuries, a 2000 study by Zairul-nizam et al, demonstrated that the
accuracy of MRI in detecting meniscal injuries was 80-84% compared
to 48-65% for clinical examination.
Getting back on track after a sports injury shouldn’t have to be an uphill battle.
Being laid up with an injury makes me stir crazy. When something’s slowing me down
or keeping me out of the race, I need to know exactly what it is – right now! That’s why
my physician relies on diagnostic MRI: it zeroes in on the problem, so we can focus on
getting me back on track.
13
Breast MRI
Breast MRI is a powerful tool for breast cancer defense and diagnosis. Although
mammography remains the standard primary protocol for detecting abnormalities in
breast tissue, Breast MRI is ideal for women with sensitive breasts, dense breast tissue
or implants, and it is strongly recommended as an additional evaluation tool for anyone diagnosed with breast cancer. Physicians frequently recommend Breast MRI for:
•Women with a family history of breast cancer
•Detecting abnormalities obscured by bone
•Distinguishing between scar tissue and recurrent tumors
•Imaging dense breasts
•Detecting, locating and staging breast cancer
•Determining if cancer has spread
•Assessing the effect of chemotherapy
• Evaluating the integrity of breast implants
To us, “a family history of breast cancer” means we need to be more
vigilant than the rest.
According to Dr. Stephen Valentine, Co-Director of Mayfair Diagnostics,
“A recent study found that MRI scans picked up additional undiagnosed
cancers missed by mammography in the opposite breast in three
percent of women who had already been diagnosed with cancer in one
breast. A significant number of unexpected multifocal cancers were also
detected with MRI, changing surgical planning. MRI technology has
become an important tool in our efforts to conquer breast cancer.”
Supplementing our annual mammograms with a Breast MRI every three
years offers us something everyone enjoys…a little extra peace of mind.

Some Answers To Put Your Mind At Ease
Do I need a Health Assessment Scan?
Most physicians endorse routine screening for most diseases beginning at age 50.
For patients with one or more risk factors (a family history of colon cancer or heart
disease; a history of diabetes, high cholesterol or high blood pressure; an inactive
lifestyle; weight problems; or concerns about abdominal disease, pelvic disease or
osteoporosis), screening should begin at age 40.
17
How do I prepare?
The Mayfair Heart and Lung Scans require no preparation. For the Virtual Colonoscopy,
you must irrigate the colon with laxatives and include temporary changes to your diet
(the same preparation as needed for the conventional colonoscopy).
What happens during the scan?
Each scan lasts only a few minutes. You may have to hold your breath for some of the
scanning, but it’s otherwise perfectly comfortable and completely painless.
Do I need a referral?
The College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta requires a referral from your healthcare provider. For the quickest possible service, referrals should be faxed to our Patient
Care Coordinator at 403.777.3198.
Who will get my results?
After your Health Assessment Scan, you will have a one-on-one consultation with a
specialty-trained radiologist who will review your images with you (applicable to CT
Health Assessment Packages only).
We’ll send your healthcare provider a detailed report, usually within 48 hours.
