Making the Calls: Attorneys General at the Fulcrum of Equality
(2:00-3:00pm)
Location: Auditorium/Grand Gallery
Description & Purpose Mark Herring and Jack Conway are the Attorneys General of Virginia and Kentucky, respectively.
They’ve faced very different opportunities and challenges in their roles, befitting the differences between
their two great states. But when they faced the question of whether to continue to appeal rulings
declaring their states’ gay marriage bans unconstitutional, each chose to stand up for equality. During
this panel, each Attorney General will deliver remarks on their work and priorities in their state; the
panel will then pivot to a discussion about the personal and political dimensions of their
decision-making, focusing on the full toolkit Attorneys General have at their disposal to advance greater
equality for the LGBT community.

Marriage Equality at the Eve of Decision: From Proposition 8 to the Present Moment
(3:45 - 4:45pm)
Location: Auditorium/Grand Gallery
Description & Purpose Just days before the Supreme Court hears oral arguments in
Obergefell v. Ohio
, we’re thrilled to convene
a conversation with three of the legal thinkers who’ve played pivotal roles in the battle for marriage
equality thus far. The Honorable Judge Vaughn Walker heard the arguments in the
Perry
case
in

California, ultimately ruling against Proposition 8 and barring its enforcement. Distinguished professor
of constitutional law Kenji Yoshino has recently published
Speak Now: The Story of Hollingsworth v.
Perry,
which argues that the oral arguments Judge Walker heard provide a template for furthering LGBT
equality around the world. And Roberta Kaplan’s arguments before the United States Supreme Court in
Windsor v. United States
convinced the Court to invalidate part of the Defense of Marriage Act,
providing a basis for the further establishment of marriage equality in dozens of states. Panelists will
discuss their historic work in detail and offer their expert perspectives on what’s yet to come.
