Buffalo News reporting on education described as "propaganda
disguised as journalism" by SUNY study

“There are few things more dangerous than propaganda disguised
as journalism,” reads one conclusion from a study by SUNY Buffalo
State professor Dr. Andrea B. Nikischer, who has delved into the
past year of reporting on education by the Buffalo News.
If we extrapolated her findings—and borrow the phrase quoted
above—we could conclude that there are in fact few things more
dangerous than the News’s education reporting.
“Propaganda and Policy: An Investigation into Alleged AntiTeacher’s Union and Pro-Charter School Bias in the Buffalo News”
is the title of Dr. Nikischer’s report, which takes a deep look into
the reporting done by the News with regard to charter schools and
Buffalo Public Schools.
The study demonstrates that two distinct stories are being told: The
first gives readers an uncritical look at charter schools, promoting
them as the answer to the perceived failure of the city’s so-called
failing public schools, while the second gives an overwhelmingly
negative portrayal of Buffalo Public Schools, along with their
teachers and union.
“As Buffalo has only one traditional newspaper, and virtually no
other mainstream media sources in the county provide detailed
coverage of the Buffalo Public Schools or school reform, the
power of articles published on these issues is immense,” notes Dr.
Nikischer, an assistant professor at Buff State’s Adult Education
Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz
and the Erie County Legislature announced
the appointment of a new member to the Erie
County Arts and Cultural Advisory Board
(“Erie Arts Board”) that will administer the
new, reinvigorated process for local cultural
institutions to compete for county funding.
“Today, I am proud to announce the
appointment of Fernando Garcia Martinez
as a member of the Erie County Arts and
Cultural Advisory Board,” said Poloncarz.

Rochester authorities say they have seen
a sharp increase in the number of heroin
overdoses during the past year.
The latest incident happened Wednesday
when a woman in her early 20s overdosed
on the drug, according to Rochester Police
officer Gonzalez. She is expected to
recover.
We've seen an enormous uptick in these
(cases) in the last six months to a year," he
said.
He estimates there have been roughly 60
heroin overdoses reported during the 12
months. Officers have also been arresting
more people in possession of heroin during
that time. In fact, the department sent out
a warning to police officers to be careful
when searching suspects because there
is the potential they could have a hidden
needle.
The other problem is that for every drug
dealer we arrest, three replace them. If you
drive up Clinton Street, you will find a drug
dealer on every corner for two miles. In
some cases, their can be 5 or 6 drug dealers

Public school supporters have been critical of the News’s coverage, which has, they
believe, unfairly and loudly echoed the agenda of Governor Andrew Cuomo, the Buffalo
Board of Education majority, and the nationwide school privatization and high-stake
testing movements. Now, for the first time, they can point to a qualitative study to back
these claims.
To undertake the study, Dr. Nikischer evaluated News articles published from October
1, 2013 to November 30, 2014. All articles—190 in total—were culled from the paper’s
regularly published articles, SchoolZone blog posts, and opinion pieces. Each article was
coded in three respects: 1) for content and tone (What is the article about? What is the
tone—positive, negative or neutral?); 2) for general themes; and 3) whether to include
the article in the study or not. The idea is to compare large sets of data and draw general
conclusions based on the tone and content of the articles. Disqualified articles were those
outside of the researchers’ ken and which had no relevance to the themes undertaken.
Nikischer and her graduate assistant Vanessa Ludwig undertook the coding process
separately in order to prevent bias contamination, finishing with a 99 percent inter-rater
reliability—a measure which indicates the degree of agreement between independent
coders. The articles that made it through the initial coding process were then moved to
the content analysis portion of the study, in which the researchers identified positive
signifiers (e.g. words such as good, effective, valuable, cost-saving, affordable, innovative,
hard-working, etc.), and negative signifiers (e.g. expensive, ineffective, old, stubborn,
broken, etc.). Tracking such signifiers while pairing them with previously identified themes
allowed the researchers to judge with a reliable degree of objectivity what messages are
being conveyed in the News’s daily reporting.
The report found that the News is telling a one-sided story—a story that promotes the
agenda of high-stakes testing and privatization advocates, and one that minimizes the
achievements of Buffalo Public Schools, along with their administrators and teachers.
“These topics receive very little independent coverage; when included in other stories the
tone is ‘neutral’ or ‘negative,’” writes Nikischer.
When it comes to covering charter schools, the News is markedly bullish. Those covered
most positively include former state education commissioner John King, former state
regent Robert Bennett, Cuomo, the Buffalo Board of Education majority (in particular,
the “maverick” Carl Paladino), and District Parent Coordinating Council president Sam
Radford.
“In summary, all things in support of corporate school reform receive positive and/or
neutral coverage-and lots of it,” Nikischer found.
In point of fact, the study’s “tone quotient analysis” found that of 30 articles published
on charter schools, 24 had a positive tone, while two had a negative tone and four had a
neutral tone. Twelve of the articles—including two front-page Sunday morning spreads—
were rated “positive-bias” in favor of charters, while 18 were rated “neutral.”
Most disturbingly, the News never cites academic research to back any of their claims. For
instance, Cuomo’s proposed teacher evaluation plan [the Annual Professional Performance
Review, or APPR] got a ringing endorsement the day after he unveiled it in his budget
address. Yet the very same program was later slammed by nearly every group of education
stakeholders who presented budget proposals to the New York State Assembly. The News
blindly followed Cuomo’s lead, ignoring the opinions of experts.
Consider, too, the News’s position on Robert Bennett, former Board of Regents member,
whose retention was the subject of a full-court press from the News’s editorial board
during the months of February and March.
“Regent Bennett’s hard work on education issues should be rewarded with another term,”
read the title of the February 2 entry into the opinion pages. That was followed on February
20 by “Western New York legislators should unanimously back Bennett for a new term on
the Board of Regents.” One week later, the News published a letter the title of which was
“Bennett’s experience beneficial to students,” and still another letter a week after that titled
“Let Bennett continue great work as Regent.” Five days later, after Bennett had withdrawn
his name for consideration, the News wrote, “Ousting of reformer from Regents is a
triumph of politics over education.”
The narrative generated by the News painted Bennett as a non-controversial, logical
choice. Yet, during this same time period, the News missed a big story which gave a look
into Bennett’s role on the Board of Regents. As reported by Geoff Decker at Chalkbeat in
February—the same month the News was busy with its Bennett hagiography—Bennett
asked his fellow Regents “to overturn short-term renewals the State Education Department
had recommended for three Buffalo charter schools.”
The New York State Education Department had recommended that renewals should not
have been granted for the full five-year period because of underwhelming performance
at each of the three schools: Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School, West Buffalo
Charter School, and Western New York Maritime Charter School.
NYSED recommended a four-year renewal term for the Buffalo Academy of Science
Charter School, “based on the school’s mixed academic performance across the Grade
7 through 12 program and limited academic performance in the school focus areas of
mathematics and science.” Both the West Buffalo Charter School and the Western New
York Maritime Charter School were also recommended for short-term renewals for similar
problems with performance.
“Bennett said he vouched for the schools, which deserved full, five-year renewals,
and the board went along with his request—an unusual move that the Senior Deputy
Commissioner Ken Wagner and some Regents advised against,” wrote Decker.
In other words, reform and accountability are words that apply to Buffalo Public Schools
but not Buffalo’s charter sector. The reason the News was so up in arms regarding
Bennett’s departure from the Board of Regents is because they know he had the will and
authority to push the agenda it supports even when it means undermining state education
standards. The News painted Bennett as bold reformer, but it’s a half story—one that, as
Dr. Nikischer’s research points out, the News has gotten accustomed to telling.
The bias is at full pitch on the paper’s editorial page: Each one of 51 opinion articles
produced by the editorial board confirmed the themes identified by the tone and content
analysis.
“The Buffalo News has made a choice to position schools (administrators, teachers, union)
as the root problem instead of positioning poverty as the root problem,” she writes.
The Buffalo News believes that it has the answers and seeks to advocate, not report, she
concludes: “…its reporters have positioned themselves as education experts, rather than
education reporters.”

Furthermore, the News has neglected to learn what’s happening in the broader educational
establishment. Dr. Nikischer found that the paper never, in any of the articles surveyed,
used academic research to back its claims. They have shut out competing voices in the
community—as well as competing voices in New York State and national press—and
gone their own way.
Dr. Nikischer recommends two courses of action—the first for the News and the second
for concerned subscribers: 1) hire an ombudsman to “monitor education content and
delivery”; 2) “public school supporters should seriously consider cancelling their
newspaper subscriptions and boycotting Buffalo News advertisers.”
“As the opinion articles are very strongly written, I reviewed the Society of Professional
Journalists Code of Ethics. After review, I determined that [the News] is walking a line of
ethical appropriateness,” she concludes.
Here one must anticipate an argument—that the News’s coverage of charter schools is
more positive because charter schools are simply better than public schools. An obvious
objection presents itself in the behavior of Bennett, who insisted on full renewals for three
underperforming Buffalo charters, while the News reeled off editorial after editorial in his
favor. A much simpler objection is that the job of a newspaper is not to advocate on behalf
of the powerful but to question their motives in the service of the dispossessed.
“A city with one newspaper…is like a man with one eye,” wrote the great press critic A. J.
Liebling, “and often the eye is glass.”

"We're starting to see more needles in the community where we didn't see them in the
past," Gonzalez said.
So why the increase in heroin use? Gonzalez said its part of a national trend. Production
of opium is on the rise and making its way to the United States. The drug is also much
more pure than it was back in the 1960s and 1970s when it became prevalent in the United
States. That allows it to be snorted, which might entice some people to use it who would
otherwise be turned off by the idea of having to inject it with a needle. He said they are
also seeing younger people using the drug. It's not uncommon for users to be in their early
20s.
A recent Department of Health report found that the number of people being treated for
heroin use has soared in the City of Rochester. In 2013, heroin accounted for nearly 32
percent of addiction treatment admissions compared to just more than 3 percent in 2000.
Local addiction treatment professionals say they have definitely noticed more people
seeking help for heroin addiction. Kendra Brown, a supervisor at the Drug Abuse treatment
Center, said that for a while they were seeing more people struggling with prescription
drug addiction, but that has changed.
"We have seen that shift towards an increase of actual heroin use, and sometimes that is
coupled with alcohol and other substances," she said.
She added that the withdrawal process for heroin addicts is particularly difficult, with
patients experiencing intensified flu-like symptoms. The center provides a safe place for
patients to detoxify and has started a women's treatment group focused on helping them
overcome prescription drug and heroin addictions. She said it is important for individuals
who go through detoxification to follow up with in-patient or out-patient therapy.

Parents Group Leader Wants Feds Takeover of BPS
Buffalo, NY - We've seen a lot of parents upset at the way Buffalo schools are run. But
rarely has it gone as far it did today.
Some parents came forward claiming the schools would be better off in the hands of the
federal government.
They say they're upset with a district that only graduates 55.5 percent of its students, and
has faced state and federal complaints for not letting students transfer out of failing schools
and disproportionately suspending African-American students.
As Samuel Radford of the District Parent Coordinating Council puts it "Right now we
need somebody who has the power to implement a solution." Radford says that somebody
would be a receiver or special master appointed by a federal judge or the Federal
Education department to replace the school board and superintendent in leading and
operating the Buffalo School District.
That is based on what he feels are the district's shortcomings and failings, and the prior
involvement of the Education Department's Office of Civil Rights review of discrimination
complaints
"We have children that have to fall further and further behind and the federal law tries to
prevent that. Right now the district is breaking the law and they allowed to," Radford said.

School Board President James Sampson says he understands the frustration and perhaps
the need to discuss this idea but adds "If you have a receiver and you don't do anything
with the rules and the union contract and bureaucracy that seems to have a difficult time
moving forward then I'm not sure that a receiver in and of itself would be effective."
Radford admits he has not discussed his federal takeover idea with anyone at the federal
level.
2 On Your side asked "How realistic is this that they will get involved...the way the
structure is set up, it's state taxation and regulation?" Radford replied "Well here;'s how
realistic it is. Last year in December Mrs. Elliott put in a complaint. By February the office
of civil rights was in this district saying that woo...there's a problem here."
But it turns out the state is already thinking takeover. Remember the strong words of
Governor Cuomo when we asked him about Buffalo's school issues back in 2013. Cuomo
said "Whether it's a takeover by the state, a mayoral takeover, or a charter school...there's
gonna have to be a death penalty for failing schools."
The state education department again says they are looking at the so-called Massachusetts
model for a state takeover. School Board President Sampson says he has heard it's in the
Governor's proposed budget bill. State education officials say they do not feel any federal
takeover plan is necessary.
Radford says he'll accept either the state or the feds to takeover if it improves the city
schools. But he feels the Governor won't get it approved by the state legislature because of
the teacher's union influence.

For the past several months a group of individuals that I consider think tankers
have been sitting around a table discussing the political future of our community.
We discussed the apathy that exist among the citizens here in Buffalo and asked the
question why? We compared today with yesterday and looked at what motivated
our people to vote and get involve with the political process. Looking at yesterday
as far back as the early 70’s and 80’s were advocacy and leadership ran rapid for
equality and accessibility to our elected officials for employment at all levels of
government. We realized that the common denominator were JOBS! Yes, the
opportunity to earn money to sustain family has always been the great motivator
for our community. There have been many civic organizations that have tried to
penetrate and impact the political process and while they were active provided
positive results. However most of them have been dissolved. Despite bumps and
bruises, there is one organization that still stands strong… NOSOTROS.
NOSOTROS, translated in English means “we” or “us” meaning that “we can do
it” was created by Augustin”Chito” Olivencia in the 1980’s. He realized that the
only way we could have a voice would be to join forces among all groups within
the Latino community and begin working for a common cause. The mission
would be to create a political presence among the status quo. Not only endorsing
candidates but also holding them accountable. To stand behind the candidates that
we would endorse, running voter registration drives, collecting signatures, putting
up signs and anything else that came along with getting out the vote. There are not
many politicians that don’t know who NOSOTROS is and what we stand for.
Therefore, the group has recommended that we make NOSOTROS stronger than
ever. We have created a meeting to invite all those individuals that are interested in
joining the organization, individuals that are serious about the development of the
Latino community when it comes to the political process and individuals that are
interested in running for public office.
We truly hope you can make it but please come only if you are serious in
contributing productively to the group. We are excited to take NOSOTROS to a
whole new level and look forward to having you be a part of it. We have wasted a
lot of time in our community and look forward to making up for it by developing
leaders and working with all those that can contribute to a better tomorrow for our

National Program Aimed At Reducing Violence And Improving
Community Relations Comes To Rochester
Students Help Lead The First Community Forum With Members Of Law
Enforcement
Last month group of Rochester City School District students will shared their personal
experiences related to violence, crime and culture with local law enforcement officials
from 10-11:30 am at Wilson Foundation Academy, 200 Genesee Street. The focus was to
begin a dialogue that leads to better understanding, collaboration and eventual reduction
in crime and improved relationships between youth and law enforcement. This will be
the first community forum to take place in Rochester under the direction of the Rochester
Latino Theater Company, in collaboration with multiple local groups, such as IBERO, City
of Rochester community and R-Centers, and the FR=EE Juvenile/Criminal Justice Action
and Change workgroup.
“As the only dual-language nonprofit in Rochester, Ibero is a strong supporter of the
Rochester Latino Theater Company and efforts to improve community relationships. In
any and all efforts to improve the City of Rochester, it’s important to engage the people
who actually live there. We need to ask teens what life is like for them, why they struggle,
why they turn to gangs,” says Ibero’s Director of Development and Communications,
Tricia Cruz.
“Our goal is to bring impactful experiences and programs to local students. We want to
help build a stronger community by engaging our youth and law enforcement in honest
discussions about what they’re dealing with on a day-to-day basis,” says Annette Ramos,
founder of the Rochester Latino Theater Company and producer of the local Westside
Story production that played at the Kodak Theater in November. Event organizers also
include City of Rochester staff, Ray Mayoliz, manager of Youth Outreach & Violence
Prevention, and Moses Robinson, youth advocate and school resource officer.
The community forum taking place this month is part of the West Side Story Project,
which provides an opportunity for law enforcement agencies to partner with a
nontraditional partner, such as a local theater company. Together, they work on developing
new approaches to gang prevention, youth-police relations, and cultural conflict.
The four specific goals of the West Side Story Project are as follows:
• To use theater and drama to start dialogs between youth and law enforcement officers
about youth and gang violence and youth/police relationships
• To use theater and drama to give youth tools to deal with their own internal conflicts and
conflicts with others
• To engage interested youth in producing, with the assistance teaching artists, their own
art and drama based on themes of West Side Story
• To engage the adult community in a dialog about youth violence, gangs, and strategies to
address system-wide responses to at-risk youth
The project provides an opportunity for middle and high school students to participate
in activities designed to engage youth and members of law enforcement agencies in
conversations about gang and youth violence prevention, youth–police relationships, and
immigration and racial/ethnic relations. Simultaneously, it introduces youth, particularly
those considered at-risk, to a world far away from their everyday lives—the experience of
live musical theatre and the opportunity to create their own art and drama based on themes
from West Side Story while working with professional actors and teaching artists.
So far, the local Westside Story Project has completed an anti-gang program with more
than 45 students at the Avenue D R-Center, James Monroe High School, and Hillside
Family of Agencies. Organizers are currently working with dozens of other students in
the City of Rochester. Participants will be surveyed after this month’s forum and all future
forums.
Summer of Opportunity Program/ Jobs – (SOOP) 2015
The Summer of Opportunity Program (SOOP) is an employment and training program for
youth ages 14-20 and who are still in high school. The program
is designed to provide training and employment opportunities to youth while
making a direct connection to success in school.
Summary of Activities
After an application is submitted, youth attend the following sessions:
Job Readiness Training (JRT): Youth will receive employment training that develops
communication, interpersonal, and interviewing skills that help with preparedness for
employment.
Prescreening: Youth will have the opportunity to practice and apply learned Job Readiness
skills in a mock interview. Students are expected to demonstrate the knowledge of
professional attire, behaviors, and interview techniques that they have learned. They are
rated on their interview and given useful tips and feedback for future use.
Parent Orientation:Bureau of Employment Skills Training and Youth Sevices provides
parent support and family development as a core component of its offerings. SOOP seeks
to involve and inform parents as partners in their children’s development. One-hour parent
orientations provide necessary information that help youth be successful in the process,
and also provide question and answer opportunities.
Interviews: Students who complete all requirements will have an opportunity to
competitively interview for appropriate summer employment opportunities.
Employment: Youth employees earn hands-on training and work experience during a 6-8
week summer employment opportunity with area employers.

SUNY Leaders Pushing for More Support of Public Higher Education
The leadership from SUNY campuses in Western New York are calling on state legislators
to support public higher education in the state. The President of State University of New
York at Fredonia Dr. Virginia Horvath was among the leaders that took part in a gathering
that was held Thursday on the Buffalo State campus. Dr. Horvath tells WDOE News about
some of the programs they would like to see included in the upcoming state budget...
Horvath says there is a five-year pilot program that she is pushing for that would benefit
Fredonia and two other SUNY campuses that are located near the border
Horvath says the move would lower the out-of-state tuition to one-and-a-half times the
state rate.

Observer circulation drops 10.74 percent
As the local demographics of Dunkirk change readership of continues to drop.
Circulation figures for US newspapers released Monday provided another dose of bad
news for an industry that has seen a wave of bankruptcies, closures and cutbacks in
newsrooms across the country
Average daily US newspaper circulation declined 8.74 percent during the six months
ending on March 31 compared with the same period a year ago, the Audit Bureau of
Circulations said.
Average Sunday circulation fell 6.54 percent during the October-March period, the bureau
said.
The latest ABC figures come as US newspapers grapple with declining print advertising
revenue, eroding circulation and the migration of readers to free news on the web or
specialty language paper such as Spanish and Asian
A slight consolation: the 8.74 percent decline in average daily circulation for 602
newspapers reporting figures for October-March was not as steep as the 10.62 percent drop
in the previous period.
Of the top 25 US daily newspapers, The Wall Street Journal was the only one reporting a
Monday to Friday circulation gain in the latest reporting period.
The Wall Street Journal, which launched a New York edition on Monday in a bid to
challenge The New York Times on its home turf, saw its circulation rise 0.5 percent in the
period to 2.09 million.
The Journal is one of the few US papers to charge readers online and Web subscriptions
are counted in its circulation figures.
Average circulation at USA Today, the second-largest US newspaper, declined 13.58
percent to 1.83 million while The New York Times saw its circulation fall 8.47 percent to
951,063.
The Los Angeles Times, owned by the bankrupt Tribune Co, shed 14.74 percent to
616,606 while The Washington Post was down 13.06 percent to 578,482.
The New York Daily News saw its circulation decline 11.25 percent to 535,059 while its
rival, Rupert Murdoch's New York Post, shed 5.94 percent to 525,004.
The Chicago Tribune, another Tribune Co. newspaper, lost 9.79 percent to 452,145 while
the Houston Chronicle slipped 13.77 percent to 366,578.
Other newspapers in the top 25 posting double-digit circulation declines were the Chicago
Sun-Times, down 13.88 percent to 268,803, the Dallas Morning News, which dropped
21.47 percent to 260,659, and the Detroit Free Press, which lost 13.31 percent to 252,017.
The San Francisco Chronicle shed 22.68 percent to 241,330 and New Jersey's Newark
Star-Ledger was down 17.79 percent to 236,017.
Bucking the trend were several smaller newspapers including the Naples Daily News
of Florida, whose circulation was up 21.76 percent to 77,565, the Toledo Blade of Ohio
which gained 6.30 percent to 117,704 and Pennsylvania daily the Allentown Morning Call,
which was up 4.77 percent to 103,845.
John Sturm, president and chief executive of the Newspaper Association of America, said
the latest ABC figures "should come as no surprise" but do "not tell the whole story about
the vitality of the newspaper industry."
"Nearly 100 million adults continue to read a print newspaper every day and 168 million
adults read a newspaper in print or online in the past week," Sturm said in a statement.

Nueva postura del gobierno sobre el matrimonio gay

Anticipan que no se argumentará en contra de que se reconozcan las uniones entre parejas
homosexuales
(Puerto Rico) El secretario de Justicia, César Miranda, anunciará hoy los detalles la nueva
postura del gobierno en torno a los matrimonios de personas del mismo sexo.
La expectativa desde inicios de semana es que el gobierno podría estar quitándole su
respaldo a la porción del Código Civil de Puerto Rico que solo reconoce el matrimonio
cuando está compuesto por un hombre y una mujer. Esta nueva postura se presentará como
parte de los argumentos del gobierno en un caso que actualmente está la bajo revisión del
Primer Circuito de Apelaciones en Boston del Tribunal Federal, en el que cinco parejas
piden que se validen sus derechos matrimoniales.
Esta mañana, el Comité Amplio para la Búsqueda de la Equidad (CABE) celebraba que
el gobierno se allanara a la petición del reconocimiento del matrimonio entre personas del
mismo sexo, asunto que posiblemente se anuncie en una conferencia de prensa en la tarde
de hoy en el Departamento de Justicia.
“La equidad para las comunidades LGBTT se está ganando paso a paso. La decisión
de hoy del gobierno no tiene un efecto automático en el resultado final del caso, pero
envía un mensaje importante al país: cuando se trata de derechos humanos hay que
hacer lo correcto. Y lo correcto hoy era dejar de defender lo indefendible, el discrimen
y la desigualdad institucionalizadas a través de un artículo de nuestro Código Civil que
impedía a personas de las Comunidades LGBTT decidir libremente si quieren casarse o
no”, expresó Amarilis Pagán Jiménez, portavoz de CABE y directora ejecutiva de Proyecto
Matria.
Hace una semana el liderato de la mayoría del Partido Popular Democrático (PPD) en
el Senado, encabezado por el presidente Eduardo Bhatia, anunció su intención de unirse
como “amigos de la corte” en respaldo a la posición de la Unión de Libertades Civiles de
EE.UU. (ACLU) a favor del reconocimiento del matrimonio entre personas del mismo
sexo.
En mayo de 2012, el presidente de Estados Unidos, Barack Obama, anunció la
determinación de dejar de respaldar el estatuto federal -DOMA, por sus siglas en inglésque solo reconocía el matrimonio como la unión entre un hombre y una mujer.
En junio de 2013, el Tribunal Supremo de Estados Unidos declaró inconstitucional la
ley DOMA, al determinar que niega la igualdad de las personas que protege la quinta
enmienda de la Constitución estadounidense.
A partir de entonces ha crecido el respaldo a la anulación de estatutos que impedían en
Estados Unidos el matrimonio gay, el cual ya se reconoce en tres cuartas partes de los
estados, así como en 17 países.
En Puerto Rico, el reconocimiento del matrimonio entre personas del mismo sexo ha sido
matizado en gran medida por posturas de algunos religiosos conservadores que entienden
que el matrimonio solo puede ser compuesto por un hombre y una mujer.

El canciller de Ecuador, Ricardo Patiño, confirmó el miércoles a Efe que acepta liderar ese grupo de
mediadores, cuya creación se decidió en una reunión de la Alianza Bolivariana para los Pueblos de
América (ALBA) esta semana, pero por el momento Estados Unidos no ha indicado si está dispuesto
a implicarse en ese mecanismo.
Respecto al decreto de Obama, la subsecretaria mexicana mostró su "preocupación" porque "el
lenguaje que utiliza no contribuye a fomentar el diálogo", y el embajador de Guatemala, José María
Argueta, rechazó "la imposición de medidas coercitivas" de ese tipo.
El canciller de Argentina, Héctor Timerman, opinó que Estados Unidos debía haber acudido a
la OEA antes de emitir ese decreto, porque "por más que ahora digan que Venezuela no es una
amenaza", la historia "indica que tal vez una orden ejecutiva termina siendo después un desastre en
nuestra región".

Pepper Meets Watson: Softbank's Robot Gets Smarter
Japanese mobile carrier Softbank said Tuesday it will incorporate artificial intelligence
Relevant Products/Services technology from IBM into its empathetic robot Pepper that will
be available to Japanese consumers around midyear.
The AI engine "Watson" is already used in health care, travel and insurance services in
English, but an adaptation was needed to make it work and think in Japanese, said Steve
Gold, Vice President, IBM Watson Group.
Unlike other cognitive technology that responds rather mechanically, Watson can learn
over time like a human brain, and understands the concept of probability, which makes it
sophisticated and more human-like for applications, according to IBM.
"It depends on the context of the conversation as to what the right answer would be,"
as opposed to how a computer would generally try to answer correctly, Gold told The
Associated Press. "The world is seldom absolute."
Pepper goes on sale in Japan this month for 198,000 yen ($1,700), but only to software

Chief Executive Masayoshi Son.
Consumers won't be able to get a robot until sometime between June and August, he said.
Details of the sales plan were still undecided, and an announcement will be made later, Son

A growing number of cyberthreats today arrive via seemingly harmless files that bypass

formats that include Microsoft Office, PDFs and even Web site URLs.
'Shine a Light on Dark Places'
"The number one most exploited vector for attacks within an enterprise Relevant Products/

abide by strict regulatory requirements. FortiSandbox is available as a physical, virtual or
cloud-based solution, and is designed to seamlessly integrate with Fortinet's other security
services.
Working together, those services can, for example, reroute file elements in an e-mail to
FortiSandbox for analysis, while FortiMail holds the message until it can be confirmed that
it doesn't contain any malicious code. When suspicious content is identified, data Relevant
Products/Services from the analysis automatically triggers updates to Fortinet's entire
global security ecosystem.
Finance, Healthcare Frequent Targets
In 2014, there was a significant increase in malicious e-mail attacks across multiple
industries, according to security firm Agari's most recent The State of E-mail Trust report.
Early attacks last year, for instance, were focused heavily on banks in the U.S., while
in the payments industry there was a 23-fold increase in e-mail cyberthreats against
customers in the middle part of the year.
Healthcare has also become a frequent target of cyberattacks. Overall, Agari found, "an
e-mail that appears to come from a healthcare company is four times more likely to be
fraudulent than an e-mail purportedly from a social media company like Facebook."
"These e-mails trick people into sharing sensitive information with hackers, leading to
identity theft and other crimes," according to the report. "Because victims of phishing
attacks often blame the companies they thought sent the forged e-mails, the attacks also
erode the trust companies spend years building with customers."
Other threats recently detected by Fortinet include a malicious downloader that downloads
fake PDF files, potential vulnerabilities in personal data generated by wearables and
"decoys" that launch executable malware files from seemingly harmless documents in
e-mails.

Softbank is also aggressively investing in India.

on serving as a voice and advocate for individuals and families experiencing difficult
times. Because of his background and experiences he is able to serve as a voice for
the Latino community while creating understanding and awareness among multiple
audiences. “It’s important for people to know that Pucho, Inc. serves people of all
backgrounds and of the impact it can have on their lives. I too, am a product of
Pucho, Inc. and because of the support I received here I was able to succeed. There
are so many people with great potential and we have the power to help them reach
that potential along with the support of the community,” said Wilmer during an

Wilmer is lifelong resident of Buffalo New York. He is the oldest child of Wilmer
& Elsy Olivencia and grandson to the Late Agustin “Pucho” and Carmen Olivencia.
Wilmer had the pleasure of growing up on the Eastside of Buffalo in the famous Swan
and Myrtle neighborhood, one of the first neighborhoods to welcome many Hispanic
families upon their arrival to the city. His family moved to the Westside when he was
still very young and had the best of both worlds. He attended St. Columba grammar
school, McKinley Vocational High School & Erie Community College where he
majored in Criminal Justice.
Wilmer is a former Deputy City Clerk where he sought to increase openness
in government and to increasing access to government for Buffalo’s Hispanic
Community. He was recently appointed by Mayor Byron W. Brown as the Program
Coordinator of the Anti-Graffiti and Clean City Program for the City of Buffalo. His
responsibilities include enhancing the quality of life and leading the fight against
graffiti and blight.
Wilmer is happily married to Wanda and lives in the Niagara District with their three
children: Jasmine 21, Kayla 19 and Michael 18. He enjoys camping, vacationing in
the Caribbean and hosting events at Puchos Social Club where he can be found on the
weekend enjoying a fun night out .

Pope Francis' drug war riffs keep offending the second biggest
Catholic country
First he warns of the impending 'Mexicanization' of Argentina. Then he says 'the devil is
punishing Mexico.' ¿Qué pasa, Francisco?
MEXICO CITY — Almost everyone seemed to love what Pope Francis had to say, until
he opened his mouth about Mexico.
He won the applause of millions of gay Catholics when he asked, “Who am I to judge
them?” He was cheered for telling women they had a greater role in the church. He was
named Time Person of the Year. And he even helped the United States and Cuba restore
diplomatic relations.
But a recent spat with Mexico, home to the world’s second biggest Catholic population,
signaled the honeymoon could be over, at least in these parts.
Francis first ruffled the feathers of the Mexican government in an email he sent to a
lawmaker in his native Argentina.
“I hope we are in time to stop Mexicanization,” the pope reportedly wrote Feb. 21,
commenting how his home country has suffered from a rise in drug violence. “I was
talking to Mexican bishops and it is a question of terror.”
For the pope, Mexico had become the very reference point for drug war mayhem.
When the mail became public, Mexico’s Foreign Secretary Jose Antonio Meade sent a
letter to the Vatican, complaining that it was “stigmatizing” Mexico. “We express our
sadness and concern regarding the comments apparently made in a letter from Pope
Francis,” Meade told a news conference.
When the Vatican sent a reply that it meant no offense and Mexico’s top diplomat said
things were “completely settled,” the matter seemed to be over. Until Pope Francis gave a
follow-up interview to Mexico’s biggest TV network, and made an even more provocative
comment.
Drug violence, he told Televisa on March 12, was the devil punishing Mexico; Satan was
angry because Mexicans are such devoted Catholics.
“I think that the devil is punishing Mexico with great fury,” Francis said. “The devil
does not forgive Mexico because she [the Virgin Mary] showed her son there. That is my
interpretation.”
As the statement was plastered across front pages it sparked furious debate, and some
anger, in a country considered to have a special relationship with the Holy See.
Outside Mexico City’s elegant metropolitan cathedral, several devotees coming from
prayer this week said they were disappointed with the pontiff.
“I believe in the church. But I think that saying that people have died because of some
spiritual punishment is not very respectful to the suffering families,” said Hector Cruz, a
52-year-old engineer.
Since 2007, cartel-related violence has killed more than 83,000 people, according to a
government count. Many innocent people, including students and children, are among the
victims.
Several columnists also questioned the wisdom of the pope’s words.
“Evil exists, without doubt, and its representation is Satan, the devil,” Raul Rodriguez
wrote in El Grafico. “But in this case, it is necessary to point the finger at corruption,
criminals infiltrating the government, poverty, hunger, ideological confrontation and
inequality as some of the causes of the explosion [of violence].”

About 82 percent of Mexico’s 120 million people are Catholic, according to the 2010
census, but the country has secular laws, keeping the church out of politics. The
number of Catholics has fallen from 98 percent in 1950, with some Mexicans turning to
Protestantism or atheism.
Religious anthropologist Elio Masferrer says the pope’s message was more complicated
than the scandalous-sounding headlines. In the interview, Francis also talked about
poverty and American drug consumption driving violence.
“The pope said many more things than this comment. You have to analyze these messages
carefully. He uses a lot of symbolic language,” says Masferrer, who is president of the
secular Latin American Religious Studies Association.
“Mexicans are mixed in their feelings about this. While some may be offended, others
agree with what Pope Francis says.”
Masferrer also points out that Pope Francis, who took his papal name after the saint of
the poor, has been supporting victims of violence. In December, the Vatican’s envoy in
Mexico gave Mass to the families of disappeared students in the bloodstained state of
Guerrero.
Rev. Hugo Valdemar, spokesman for the archdiocese of Mexico City, said that the pope’s
comments simply reflect the age-old Catholic position.
“Scripture states clearly that the devil is behind evil acts. This is in line with Catholic
thinking and one shouldn’t make a scandal out of it,” Valdemar told GlobalPost.
Mexican Catholics have felt a special link to the Vatican since it supported them in the
face of religious persecution after the Mexican Revolution, Valdemar said. They had
a particular devotion to Pope John Paul II, who visited the nation five times, attracting
crowds of millions. His successor Pope Benedict XVI visited Mexico in 2012 and drew
more modest crowds, before stepping down due to ill health.
“There was a deep affection in Mexico for John Paul II, and those are hard shoes to fill,”
Rev. Valdemar said. “But Pope Francis can still win the hearts of the Mexican people.”

Pope Francis Will Break Bread With Gay, Transgender Inmates
During Prison Visit
(RNS) When Pope Francis pays a visit to Naples this Saturday (March 21) he will have
lunch with some 90 inmates at a local prison, a contingent that will reportedly include 10
from a section reserved for gay and transgendered prisoners, and those infected with the
virus that causes AIDS.
The stopover at the Giuseppe Salvia Detention Center in Poggioreale, near Naples, was
originally not scheduled to include lunch, according to a report from Tv2000, an Italian
television network operated by the country’s Catholic bishops.
But the pope insisted on the meal, which will be prepared by the prisoners, some of whom
will come from two other detention centers. The 90 were chosen by lottery from among
1,900 inmates, according to the Vatican Insider website.
Among the many innovations Francis has made since his election two years ago this
month has been a new tone and approach to gay and transgender people.
One of his signature phrases, “Who am I to judge?,” came in response to a question about
whether a gay man could be a priest. And in late January he met privately in the Vatican
with a transgender man from Spain who had written to Francis about the rejection he was
experiencing in his home parish.
Francis has made an outreach to detainees a signature part of his ministry to the
“marginalized.” On Holy Thursday next month, he will wash the feet of men and women
inmates at a facility near Rome, as he did shortly after his election.
The lunch this Saturday will be very simple, even “frugal,” because the pontiff wants
to take time to meet each prisoner individually, Anna Maria Esposito, head of a prison
ministry, told Vatican Radio.
The prison visit is part of a busy day for the pope in the sprawling Italian city 150 miles
south of Rome.
Francis will begin by praying at a sanctuary in Pompeii — a town known for its Marian
shrine, as well as a volcano — and he will go on to hold a series of events, including
an outdoor Mass and meetings with young people and the sick before returning in the
evening to the Vatican.

“I’d like people to know that there’s someone out there fighting for them,” Barnes said. “I
want to take my group to each community in Buffalo and spread the word about multiple
myeloma.”
As a member of the Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) Minority Patient Action
Team, whose members consists of predominantly African-American and Hispanic/Latino
patients at RPCI, he offers advice, feedback, and insight based on his own experiences to
help enhance programs and services for his fellow patients.
Barnes is currently dealing with the side effects of chemotherapy, including dizzy spells
that make it difficult to be active and travel. “It’s hard to attend events in the condition
I’m in,” he said. “I have my good days and my bad days, and on my good days I try to get
around and do whatever I can.”
Research underway at RPCI aims to extend and improve the lives of patients like Barnes.
Kelvin Lee, MD, Chair of the Department of Immunology and Co-Leader of the Tumor
Immunology and Immunotherapy Program, focuses his work on the immunology and
biology of multiple myeloma. The ultimate goal: to develop vaccines that can harness the

9 Billionaires Are About to Remake New York's Public Schools—
Here's Their Story

Hedge-fund manager Whitney Tilson stands at a Harvard club podium in midtown
Manhattan, facing a room full of investors eating eggs and bacon, and eager to learn more
about charter schools. The walls of the wood-paneled room are lined with the portraits of
Tilson's Harvard forefathers. Above the podium where Tilson stands hangs an ornamental
gold ship, swaying. In the corner of the room is a large screen, on which the logos of the
day's sponsors, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Sam Walton Foundation,
float like guardian angels. Two large stone fireplaces dominate the west end of the room.
Their exaggerated mantelpieces are each decorated with two empty crests and a laurel—
symbols of power drained of any purpose.
Tilson begins an enormous PowerPoint presentation, speaking of the inequities black and
Latino children face in the public school system. "Your entire prison population is in these
red bars," he explains, showing red bars indicating the high percentage of poor black and
Latino children who could not read at a fourth-grade level. No such children, nor their
parents, seemed to have been invited to this presentation.
Despite the role poverty plays in determining whose kids gets stuck in those red bars,
Tilson declares to the room of Ivy League investors, "This is not rocket science. Notice
on my list there's no #5, no Spend More Money. You get new facilities and smaller
classrooms but nothing changes. Nobody believes anymore that if you give us more
money we'll solve all the problems."
Something is Rotten in the State of New York
These exact talking points were echoed in Democrat Andrew Cuomo's State of the State
address, last January, where the governor commanded the legislature, "Don't tell me that
if we only had more money [for education], it would change. We have been putting more
money into this system every year for a decade and it hasn't changed and 250,000 [failing
children] will condemn the failing schools by this system."
Putting his money, or lack thereof, where his mouth is, Cuomo has banked his
gubernatorial legacy on a budget that would again fail to meet the state's public-school
funding requirements, instead increasing the privatization of New York's education system
and weakening New York State's once powerful teachers' union, NYSUT. Cuomo's
education reform proposal would tie 50 percent of teacher evaluations to student test
scores, based on a controversial practice called Value-Added Modeling, drastically
weaken teachers' opportunity for tenure, expedite the firing of teachers, make room for
a hundred more charter schools, and promote state takeover of "failing" (or poor) school
districts—a tactic that has been used to expand charter school growth without the consent
of elected school boards across the country. In his 2014 re-election bid, Cuomo declared
that as governor he would work to enact long-term measures to "break" public education,
which he called "one of the only remaining public monopolies." His pledge will be put to
the test when the state legislature votes on his budget proposals at the end of this month.
The consensus that New York public schools do not require more funding is curious,
given the landmark 2006 Campaign for Fiscal Equity court ruling and subsequent
statewide resolution ordering the state to correct its inequitable school-funding formula
to provide every student their constitutional right to "sound basic education." In 2007,
Governor Spitzer and the New York State Legislature enacted a statewide resolution,
creating one statewide school aid formula based on student poverty concentration and
district wealth and promising to add $5.5 billion in schools's operating aid over four years.
Yet in 2009, after two years of more equitable funding, the state froze school aid, citing
the financial crisis. Over the next two years, New York State actually cut school funding,
including $2.1 billion in classroom cuts.
Zakiyah Ansari, a parent and public schools advocate with the labor-backed Alliance for
Quality Education, called such reasoning shameful, "Why do Cuomo and these hedge
funders say money doesn't matter? I'm sure it matters in Scarsdale. I'm sure it matters
where the Waltons send their kids. They don't send their kids to schools with overcrowded
classrooms, over-testing, no art, no music, no sports programs, etc. Does money only ‘not
matter' when it comes to black and brown kids?"
But the coalition to remake New York's education system isn't hearing it. A few years ago,
such blunt threats against public schools, the state's formidable teachers' union, NYSUT,
not to mention the majority of Cuomo's own party, would have been unthinkable. Yet
over the last year, a dark-money charter-school advocacy group, Families for Excellent
Schools, smashed almost all lobbying records in Albany and a Super PAC, New Yorkers'
for a balanced Albany poured $4.3 million into six Senate races, helping tip the Senate
Republican in a state with six times as many registered Democrats as Republicans. Thus,
with the infusion of five business-friendly senators, Governor Cuomo's radical education
reform bill is suddenly a real political possibility.
Clearly, the governor's ambitions are not focused on New York State any longer. A
recent Quinnipiac poll, for example, indicates Cuomo's education proposal has lowered
his overall approval rating to its lowest in office, with only 28 percent in support of and
63 percent against his massive reform plan. While 50 percent support his advocacy of
charter schools, an overwhelming 71 percent do not believe teachers should be evaluated
based on student test scores, and 65 percent do not believe such scores should determine
tenure. Furthermore, if Cuomo was at all interested in staying in New York, he would
not be waging an all out war against the state's still formidable teachers' union, once
considered the preeminent political force in Albany. "Andrew Cuomo's career is based on
copying everything Bill Clinton ever did, going against teachers' unions with the support
of billionaires, just like the Clintons did with Walmart," argues one Albany lobbyist to
The Nation. "He's not especially original, but he's tough, mean, and can execute a plan.
He doesn't give a rats' ass about education, he just wants Wall Street money. He sees the
backing of billionaires key to his future success."
And over years, Cuomo has earned this backing. According to a recent Competitive
Advantage Research analysis, individual contributions to Cuomo during his tenure as
attorney general and governor from New York City's hedge-fund community alone
amount to over $4.83 million; additionally, hedge-fund managers have also given $2.53
million to the New York State Democratic Party Committee's Housekeeping fund,
which Hedge Clippers called "a Cuomo-controlled slush fund that has been used to
pay for advertisements to support the Governor." Thus, in exchange for the hedge fund
community's financial support, Cuomo is willing to deal a massive blow to the state's
public school system.
But according to an investigation by The Nation, several hedge fund–backed
organizations have been laying the groundwork for this maneuver for years, even
before Cuomo took office. The current push for education reform in New York is not an
expression of the vast majority of New York's parents and children but the result of a
five-year-long billionaire hedge-funders' campaign to realize their own vision for public
schools.
The Billionaire Boy's Club
In the 2014 election cycle, no two groups dominated Albany more than the pro–education
reform Families for Excellent Schools (FES) and the anti-tax Super PAC New Yorkers
for a Balanced Albany. Cuomo's policy proposals come straight out of FES's playbook.
Eliza Shapiro in a recent Capital New York piece, noted that Cuomo's report about New
York's ‘failing schools' crisis "was sometimes indistinguishable from the eight reports
on struggling schools F.E.S. [Families for Excellent Schools] has sent reporters since the
summer."
This rapid purchase of this influence is unprecedented. As Capital New York reported, last
September and October alone Families for Excellent Schools spent nearly $2.9 million,
more than doubling the previous spending record for that period and making ideas like a
50 percent test-based teacher evaluation suddenly conceivable. The year's final numbers
are not out yet, but if such high levels of spending has continued, Families for Excellent
Schools will have spent $13.4 million in 2014, the largest single-year lobbying spree in
New York state history. Similarly, in just a matter of weeks, New Yorkers for a Balanced
Albany's $4.3 million ad buy pushed the possibility of a Republican Senate takeover from
probable to guaranteed, freeing Cuomo to go even farther rightward in his State of the
State budget proposal.
Nonetheless, despite the two groups' distinct political expenditures and public rhetoric, it is
almost certain that Families for Excellent Schools and New Yorkers for a Balanced Albany
are funded and organized by the same small network of people: the same nine New York
hedge-fund billionaires.
Though Families for Excellent Schools presents itself as a grassroots parent education
reform organization, four of its five original board members are Wall Street titans like
Bryan Lawrence and Paul Appelbaum, who made their millions in the hedge fund and
private equity worlds respectively. Families for Excellent Schools' known donors include
corporate foundation groups like the Walton Family Foundation ($700,000) and the Broad
Foundation ($200,000), but these donations account for only a tiny fraction of Families for
Excellent Schools' overall revenue. In contrast to most "grassroots" parents' organizations,
Families for Excellent Schools has retained the services of David Grandeau, New York's
former top lobbying regulator, whose expertise has helped shield its donors' identities by
funneling most of its spending through a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.
Nonetheless, overwhelming institutional similarities indicate that Families for Excellent
Schools is largely funded by the same nine hedge-fund billionaires behind almost all
of New Yorkers for a Balanced Albany's rapid expenditures. Hedge fund manager Joel
Greenblatt, who gave $250,000 to New Yorkers for a Balanced Albany, founded Success
Academy, a charter school chain that has been spearheading Families for Excellent
Schools' on the ground efforts. Additionally, hedge fund mogul Daniel Loeb, who gave
$1.025 million to New Yorkers for a Balanced Albany, sits on the board of Success
Academy and Julian H. Robertson Jr. who also gave $1 million to the PAC, is the father
of the founder of PAVE charter school, also affiliated with Families for Excellent Schools.
To top it all off, as WNYC reported last year, Families for Excellent Schools and the New
York branch of New Yorkers for A Balanced Albany's registered parent organization,
StudentsFirst, share a business address.
aken together, these two organizations have provided a vehicle for a tiny group of wealthy
NYC hedge-fund managers not just to push their vision of education reform but to tip the
political balance of the entire state—throwing support to Cuomo and state Republicans—
to ensure its success.
Astroturfing a Movement
Though Families for Excellent Schools really began making headlines in 2014 with its
record lobbying expenditures, its first few years were spent quietly organizing rallies with
charter school parents and college students in support of education reform issues. Much of
this "activism" was funded and directly organized by FES.
FES' director Jeremiah Kittredge, for example, trained student organizers from the college
group, Students For Education Reform, which the pro-charter school advocacy group
Education Reform Now boasted about helping laying the groundwork for back in 2010.
Though Students For Education Reform has begun to implode due to students' concerns
about its top-down corporate agenda, SFER, like its parent organization Education Reform
Now, has raised headlines for allegedly violating its 501(c)(3) status in explicitly proeducation reform political activities in mayoral and state races nationwide.

Orlando “Siri” Salido se enfrentará contra Román “Rocky” Martínez
En sus 19 años de carrera deportiva, el boxeador mexicano Orlando “Siri” Salido (4212-2, 29 KO’s) ha logrado imponerse sobre cuatro peleadores boricuas. Estos son Carlos
“El Topo” Gerena, a quien venció por decisión mayoritaria en 2002; Omar Adorno, que
se fue vía nocaut dos años después; Juan Manuel “Juanma” López, que probó la amarga
medicina de la derrota en dos ocasiones (2011 y 2012) por nocaut técnico; y Orlando “El
Fenónemo” Cruz, que también fue despachado por nocaut en el 2013.
Sin embargo, el vegabajeño Román “Rocky” Martínez (28-2-2, 17 KO’s) confía en
detener esa racha cuando se enfrente a Salido el sábado, 11 de abril, por el cinturón de las
130 libras de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB) en la cartelera bautizada como
“The War” que se escenificará en el Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot, en San Juan.
“En lo absoluto”, dijo el dos veces excampeón junior ligero de OMB cuando se le
preguntó si él podría ponerle fin a la racha de victorias sobre boxeadores boricuas que
lleva el mexicano.
“Estoy sumamente seguro que el 11 de abril voy a salir con la victoria. Estoy trabajando
a 12 asaltos porque Salido es un peleador que se cae y vuelve y se para. Si lo puedo parar
por nocaut, muy bien. Si no, le vamos a ganar por decisión. Lo que tengo en la mente es la
victoria”, agregó el peleador este miércoles durante un entrenamiento público que realizó
en el gimnasio municipal de Dorado.
Durante la jornada de ejercicios, Martínez lució una máscara de entrenamiento, cuyo
propósito es simular los entrenamientos en altitud sin necesidad de tener que desplazarse
durante una temporada a un lugar alto. Lo que se busca es que los atletas puedan aumentar
su capacidad pulmonar mientras hacen ejercicios. Y eso es precisamente lo que pretende
la esquina de “Rocky”.
“Esa máscara emula la altura de 10,000 a 12,000 pies. Lo podemos comparar como con
la altura de México, más o menos. Muchos atletas la están usando ahora. Nosotros la
estamos usando porque deseo que cuando Rocky esté en el sexto round, se sienta como en
el primero. Para que siga por ahí para abajo a las millas”, explicó el entrenador del púgil,
Raúl “Papo” Torres.
El técnico añadió que su pupilo lleva aproximadamente un mes usando la máscara y
sostiene que ha visto mejoría en el aguante a la distancia.
“Se nota el cambio porque cuando trabaja 12 asaltos de guanteo, no abre la boca.
Nosotros solo la usamos cuando tenemos entrenamiento de piso. Cuando hay guanteos
y otros trabajos, la eliminamos. También la eliminamos en la carrera matutina”, acotó
Torres, quien también se mostró seguro de que Martínez ganará.
El púgil coincidió con su entrenador en que la máscara le ha ayudado a mejorar su
función cardiovascular cuando se enfrentará a Salido, un boxeador que es conocido por
tener mucho aguante.
“Hasta ahora he sentido la diferencia cuando la uso. Esto es para coger un poquito más de
aire porque sabemos queSalido es peleador que rinde, al igual que yo, pero un extra puede
ayudar”, declaró Martínez.
Más allá de la máscara, el peleador puntualizó que la preparación para esta pelea ha
sido la mejor que ha tenido en su carrera. Expuso que ha utilizado como compañeros de
guanteo a peleadores de 130 y 135 libras con distintas habilidades para poder adaptarse a
distintos patrones de pelea. También ha trabajado para evitar caer en el excesivo toma y
dame y para cuidar su guardia.
Asimismo, indicó que entiende que podrá hacer de manera cómoda las 130 libras
reglamentarias.
“Gracias a Dios estoy bien, estoy como a unas 10 o nueve libras (de las 130). Esperamos
hacer el peso bien. Siempre cuando uno llega a las 133-134, la cosa se pone un poco mala.
Pero con el trabajo que llevamos, podremos hacerlas”, dijo.
Por último, Martínez sostuvo que la pelea contra Salido es “la más importante de su
carrera” porque de ganar, volvería a la cima. “Por eso he tomado esta preparación bien,
bien en serio porque sé que mi carrera depende de ella”, puntualizó.
Además de la pelea de Salido y Martínez, la cartelera “The War” enfrentará al
puertorriqueño McWilliams Arroyo (15-2, 13 KO’s) y al excampeón mundial junior
mosca, el mexicano Ramón García Hirales (20-5-1, 12 KO’s), por el título regional peso
mosca (112 libras) Latino de la OMB. También se medirán José 'Chelo' González (23-1,
18 KO’s) y el estadounidense Sharif Bogere (26-1, 18 KO’s) por el vacante título ligero

declararse culpable de los cargos por trasiego de sustancias dopantes, según documentos
de la corte.

por la trama de dopaje de la clínica Biogenesis.
Los documentos judiciales indican que Sucart cambiará su declaración inicial en la
audiencia pautada para el próximo viernes ante la jueza de distrito federal, Cecilia M.
Altonaga. Sucart fue sindicado dentro un pliego de siete cargos en los que se menciona
distribución de testosterona y conspiración para distribuir sustancias para mejorar el
rendimiento físico.

Se cumplen 20 años del primer regreso del exastro de la NBA
Si pensamos en los grandes regresos en la historia de los deportes, seguramente el primero
en la memoria sería la reaparición de Michael Jordan en la NBA en 1995 luego de un año
de anunciar su retiro, cuando se encontraba en el mejor momento de su carrera.
Y su 'escudero' Scottie Pippen jamás pensó que vería nuevamente a su compañero en uniforme.
En una serie de tuits, el exalero de la NBA contó sobre el día que se concretó el regresoel primero de dos- de quizás el mejor jugador de liga en la historia.
"Veo que han pasado 20 años desde las dos palabras más famosas en la historia del
deporte: 'I'm back'", recordó Pippen en la red social.
Jordan entró en cancha el 19 de marzo de 1995 frente a los Pacers de Indiana luego
de anunciar vía un mensaje de fax que se pondría las zapatillas nuevamente luego de
colgarlas en 1993 tras tres campeonatos corridos con los Bulls.
Con el número 45 en vez del clásico 23, Jordan jugó 43 minutos con 19 puntos, 6
asistencias, 6 rebotes y tres robos de balón en la derrota en tiempo extra.
"Para ser honesto, después que se retiró por primera vez en 1993 pensé que para él era el
fin. Creo que un regreso era lo más lejos de su mente. Siempre recuerdo lo impactados
que estuvimos cuando MJ abandonó el juego de esa manera. Estábamos listos para ir por
un cuarto título al hilo", contó Pippen.
Jordan se sumergió en otras de sus pasiones: el béisbol. Estuvo activo con los Barons de
Birmingham, novena afiliada a los Medias Blancas de Chicago, en la Doble A.
"Estuve en contacto con él mientras jugaba béisbol pero no hablamos mucho. Le di su
espacio ya que necesitaba un tiempo fuera del baloncesto. No sabía cuánto amaba el
béisbol hasta ese punto. Era bastante apasionado sobre el juego y demostró que podía
jugar", continuó Pippen.
Los Bulls terminaron con marca de 47-35 con la integración de Jordan, pero perdieron en
las semifinales de la Conferencia del Este en seis juegos frente al Magic de Orlando.
"Perder contra Orlando fue duro. Pasó mucho tiempo desde que tuvimos a MJ y perder en
los playoffs. Pero nos motivó. Él lo tomó duro", siguió Pippen.
La temporada siguiente, los Bulls regresaron al trono para repetir la hazaña de tres títulos
en fila (seis en ocho años) antes del segundo retiro de Jordan en 1998. Regresó por tercera
vez en el 2001 por par de temporadas con los Wizards de Washington.
Pele backs Blatter for 5th term running FIFA
LONDON (AP) Pele is supporting Sepp Blatter's bid to continue running world football
as the FIFA president prepares for his toughest-ever election battle.
Blatter is taking on three rivals in FIFA's May election, including Pele's friend, Luis Figo,
the former Portugal, Barcelona and Real Madrid player.
But Pele is insistent that the 79-year-old Blatter should serve a fifth, four-year term
despite lingering questions over FIFA's handling of ethics scandals.
''I am going to be clear, I will support Sepp Blatter because Blatter has more experience,
he stayed there a long time,'' Pele said in an interview with The Associated Press on
Friday. ''Of course in life you must have some changes, but I will support Blatter, I think
he is still has opportunity to do nice administration.''
Pele believes FIFA's biggest challenge is being able to effectively manage a rapidlyexpanding game.
''People should pay attention to one thing, for some years it was two or three countries
(dominating) football),'' the Brazilian said. ''Now you have growth ... Asia, Africa. (It's)
becoming more difficult to administrate FIFA now, that is the problem.''
Pele also highlighted ''this problem with Platini and Blatter'' - with UEFA President
Michel Platini demanding the 79-year-old Swiss steps aside.
Platini, though, is not a candidate in the election. Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan and
Dutch football chief Michael van Praag are joining Figo and Blatter as candidates in the
secret ballot of FIFA's 209 member associations.
The 74-year-old Pele was speaking at a Subway sandwich store promotional event in
London three months after leaving a Brazilian hospital after being treated for a urinary
tract infection. The infection stemmed from a Nov. 13 surgery to remove kidney stones.
''Of course, when you stay in the hospital always people worry but ... I am a strong guy,''
said Pele, who is attending Liverpool's Premier League match against Manchester United
on Sunday. ''I am healthy. Thanks to everyone who prayed for me.''
The illness also brought on renewed reflections on Pele's achievements - winning three
World Cups with Brazil - and where he ranks among the greatest players of all time.
''I think always when they talk about big names, big players at the moment they compare
with me,'' Pele said. ''We have to talk about the moment - the past is the past - but you
cannot forget George Best, Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton, Pele, (Franz) Beckenbauer,
(Johan) Cruyff. You have excellent players in the past.''
These days, it's Barcelona forward Lionel Messi and Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo
who have joined the discussion about the best ever.
''Messi is more my style,'' said Pele, who presented the FIFA world player of the year
award to Ronaldo in 2014. ''In the last 10 years the better player in the world was Messi no doubt. ... Ronaldo is more of a center forward. Messi is more for the team.''
One thing Pele still finds it painful to talk about is Brazil's 7-1 loss to Germany in the
World Cup semifinals on home soil last July.
''You have to talk about this?'' Pele said. ''This is life. This happens. Football is always a
box of surprise.''

Continuing Momentum At Los Tainos
When I was voted in as President at Los Tainos, the organization was in turmoil.
Accusations of theft, lack of transparency and questions about how the funds were
misappropriated were commonplace. Trust had deteriorated to the point that some
members of the board were pushed out and I, a relative new comer, had been sought out
to lead the organization toward transparency. A new board was quickly established and
with it, a hope for a brighter future.
That was 4 years ago.
Recently, I decided to step down from my leadership position due to numerous
responsibilities related to full-time work and my recent commitment as Chairman of the
City of Buffalo Boy Scouts organization, among others. I knew I could not juggle these
responsibilities while maintaining a healthy work-life balance- something that has become
increasingly important to me throughout the past decade. After four years, it was my time
to hand over the ropes to someone with the enthusiasm and energy to carry on the mission
of Los Tainos.
I reached out to various individuals in the community, requesting involvement in the
organization with the goal of establishing a new leadership board.
The call was heeded by Mr. Benny Matta, a longtime community advocate, at an open
meeting announced nearly 4 weeks in advance and held Wednesday, March 18th. The
house was packed with around 30 seniors in attendance, as well as representatives from
the West Side Community Services and Concerned Ecumenical Ministries, who were also
invited to attend.
By most accounts, the meeting was a success. I commended Mr. Matta for stepping up
to the plate and I answered questions from those in attendance. A succession plan was
firmly established, with my full confidence in Mr. Matta’s ability to lead the organization
forward.
The next day I received a call from an active member in the community who had heard
rumors that there were “problems” at Los Tainos. This community resident was unable to
provide me with any additional details.
Although I had no details of these rumors, it disturbed me. I want to set the record straight
by highlighting the progress of Los Tainos over the past four years through this open
letter.
With the help of our volunteer board, With the help of our volunteer board, numerous
initiatives were established that helped to secure a better future for Los Tainos including:
Infrastructure upgrades which included replacement of floor tiles, ceiling boards, wall
painting.
New carpeting for offices and new chairs for waiting area.
Complete upgrade of the center’s plumbing system, including bathrooms and kitchen.
Purchase of new equipment including industrial-size refrigerator and freezer.
Fixing broken equipment, including food warmers, stove and fryer.
Re-negotiation of existing lease agreement with the WNY Puerto Rican and Hispanic
Parade which more than doubled revenue from previous agreement.
Partnership with welfare-to-work participants to upkeep maintenance of facility.
Establishment of bilingual literacy program
Increased participation of the Center’s subsidized lunch program.
Increased participation of the center’s Bingo program
Establishment of new revenue streams, including a donation box program at Niagara
Cafe.
Renewal of Community Development Block Grant funding.
Secured financial support from private entities, including the Buffalo Metropolitan
Federal Credit Union and H&R Block.
Secured generous funding from elected officials, including the office of Councilman
Rivera and Councilman Pridgen.
Partnership with West Side Community Services and Concerned Ecumenical Ministries
to establish West Side Seniors, an initiative which has introduced new programs and
activities to engage the seniors and improve their quality of life.
Agreement with Catholic Charities to assume responsibility over plumbing and other
costs, thereby significantly reducing costs to Los Tainos.
Negotiated $1 annual lease agreement Delta Development and La Casa De Los Tainos.
Establish space rental for birthday parties, weddings, etc..
Creation of website and social media presence.
MATAN INMIGRANTES Y NO PASA NADA
Cuando la policía mata a un inmigrante en Estados Unidos, la indignación es la misma que
cuando mata un afroamericano.
Pero la respuesta es distinta. Tras la muerte de tres mexicanos a manos de la policía
no hemos visto las protestas y las marchas que ocurrieron luego de las muertes de los
afroamericanos Michael Brown en Ferguson, Missouri, y Eric Garner en Staten Island,
Nueva York. Algo no está bien aquí.
El problema es que, además de la tragedia por sus muertes, los latinos e inmigrantes siguen
con miedo ante la policía y no confían en que se hará justicia. Por eso la reacción es tan
tibia. Pero no debería ser así.
A nivel oficial parecería que la muerte de inmigrantes es menos importante que la de
ciudadanos norteamericanos. Ni el presidente Barack Obama, ni el Procurador General,
Erick Holder, ni ningún líder Republicanos han salido en público a denunciar que la
policía mató a tres inmigrantes mexicanos en menos de tres semanas.
El gobierno mexicano envió una carta de protesta a Washington -diciendo que no son
hechos aislados- pero no ha querido convertir estas tres muertes en un asunto central que
tense las relaciones bilaterales. Los mexicanos que viven en Estados Unidos están solos;
saben que no son una prioridad para el gobierno en la ciudad de México. Matan mexicanos
y no pasa nada.
Esto es lo que pasó:
1) El 10 de febrero la policía de Pasco, estado de Washington, mató al mexicano Antonio
Zambrano luego que el indigente les tirara piedras, según muestra un video.
2) El 20 de febrero la policía de Grapevine, Texas, mató al mexicano Rubén García luego
de una persecución. “¿Me vas a matar?” aparentemente le preguntó García a un agente de
la policía, con los brazos en alto, de acuerdo con la versión de su cuñado. Sí, lo mataron:
recibió dos disparos en el pecho.
3) Y por último, el 27 de febrero la policía de Santa Ana, California, mató al mexicano
Ernesto Canepa, quien era sospechoso de robo y a quien le encontraron un pistola de
perdigones en su auto. La familia de Canepa dice que tenía dos trabajos y cuatro hijos.
A estas tres muertes -que están bajo investigación- hay que sumar las de al menos 17
mexicanos que han muerto en enfrentamientos con la Patrulla Fronteriza desde el 2010,
de acuerdo con las cifras de la organización Southern Border Communities Coalition. La
triste realidad es que la mayoría de estas muertes pasan desapercibidas y, pocas veces, se
sabe realmente qué pasó. La impunidad es, casi, total. Nadie, generalmente, termina en la cárcel.
Otra triste conclusión es que tampoco existe una expectativa de justicia. No me imagino
al Departamento de Justicia haciendo una investigación a fondo sobre los abusos de la
policía en contra de inmigrantes latinoamericanos. Estoy seguro que, si la hicieran, sus
conclusiones serían muy parecidas a las de su reciente informe sobre el maltrato de la
policía de Ferguson contra afroamericanos: detenciones sin razón, uso de lenguaje racista,
abuso de fuerza y la terrible sensación de que no son tratados justamente.
Esta sensación de injusticia contra los inmigrantes en Estados Unidos está reforzada por
el lenguaje de muchos políticos en Washington, y fuera de Washington, que los califican
de “criminales”. Los políticos son culpables de crear este falso estereotipo del inmigrante;
una cosa es estar aquí ilegalmente y otra muy distinta es cometer crímenes. Y, siguiendo
el mismo y equivocado argumento, muchos departamentos de policía de Estados Unidos
tratan a los inmigrantes como “criminales” aunque lo no sean.
No, a pesar de lo que diga la Declaración de Independencia, en Estados Unidos no todos
son tratados como iguales. Algunos -por el simple hecho de haber nacido en el extranjero,
hablar con acento y tener otro color de piel- pueden perder la vida a manos de quien los
debería proteger: la policía.

When the new board was established nearly 4 years ago, it inherited thousands of dollars
in debt and it successfully cleared all outstanding debt up that point. This non-profit
organization is ALWAYS in need of additional funding sources and individuals willing to
step up to the plate and get involved. On Wednesday, March 25th, a new leadership will
be established at the center and I encourage you to be part of the solution to help make the
lives of the elderly better.
The future of Los Tainos is set atop a strong foundation and with the right leadership and
guidance, I am certain that the best is yet to come. Get involved.
