We are being forced to lift caps on spending in the plan and offer new benefits without any |imits on what doctors and hospitals can charge. These changes are forcing many small union healthcare plans to require significant increases in contributions from the ernployers at contract time. It's a choice we don't want to make because rue know that t'iie harci workirig mertbei-s of 'rhis Union ireed increases in wages and security irr their futu re. We are plr:ased to reportthat after many discus:;ions with different'leamster Locals in New York City, Local8i.0 IBT has offered to merge our Union and health plan into theirs. They have the ability to do this because they have large reserves in their Fr.rnds and a very well-run Plan. Local 810 is doing this to help us keep all that we've fought for and move forward together into a prosperous future. The health benefits would be the same or better than what you have now, with the addition of a free dental clinic for you and your family, (We will be providing a side by side comparison for your review). ln order for our members to receive these benefits we must merge Local 805 into Local 810. This merger would benefit our members in many other ways - our combined membership would be over 3,500 members, and with numbers comes strength. We would have an in-house Union attorney and a bilingual office staff that's located in Long lsland City. Local 810 has also agreed to bring over our staff so that Llnda, Enrique and myself can continue to represent tlre members. Mike Smith is the President and a 20 year membr:r of the Local. After numerous conversations and meetings with the members, I am confident that this is the right move for Local 805 members. The combined leadership and membersl'rip wiil make us stronger in facing the erver increasing challenges of bargaining fair contracts for our members - continuing to provide secure, affordable health and retirement benefits while winning the kinds of raises in pay that are needed to keep up with the spiraling cost of living. Under the Teamster constitution a vote is requirr:d of the 805 membership. This vote will be at Local 805 on November 23'd from 10am-12pm.
