Our beloved mother, Bernice Joy, died on
March 6, 2015. Thank you for all your prayers
and support on the occasion of her death.
Mom was a loyal parishioner for many years and truly
loved Holy Family. Your assistance and presence as
we prepared for and celebrated her funeral mass was
a great blessing. We deeply appreciate your kindness
and sympathy during this time of loss.

Hungering for a Healthy Harvest
CRS Rice Bowl brings our Lenten journey back to
Africa this week, to the Democratic Republic of
Congo. We join our fasting in solidarity with people who go hungry, and we remember in prayer the importance of building a community that is willing to support
those most in need.
Remember, your Lenten sacrifices change lives.

HOLY FAMILY SCHOOL—DID YOU KNOW?
This Thursday students of Holy Family in grades 3-8 will
be participating in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. In addition, every Friday during the season of Lent our students
attend a reflective service of the Stations of the Cross.
In the next Catholic Sentinel, see times for Holy Week
services all over the region. Hear about how
youths, and others, turned out to greet relics
of St. John Paul II, a pope who loved
youths. Meet class families and see what
they do to afford Catholic schools. Learn
how teens can manage stress and how faith
guides a developer of low-cost housing in
Portland. See why St. Vincent de Paul needs your urgent
help. Find all this news and more at CatholicSentinel.org.
March 22 ♥ 5th Sunday in Lent ♥ John
12:20-33 In today’s Gospel, Jesus talks
about resurrection, “I tell you that a grain
of wheat that falls on the ground will never be
more than one grain unless it dies. But if it dies, it
will produce lots of wheat.” These words are at the
heart of our Faith. The grain of wheat is Jesus,
himself, and it is His death on a cross that produces the “fruit” of everlasting life.

Think about someone that you think is unselfish. How have they made others happy by
being unselfishness?
What do you tend to “hold on to” rather than
follow Jesus? (What do you need “to die to”
or “let go of” to better follow Jesus?)

Another successful evening—THANKS to

LENTEN PRETZELS
The one traditional Lenten food is the pretzel. In the early Church the rules of fasting
did not allow meat, dairy products or eggs.
These small breads made from flour, water
and salt were made to accompany the simple meals
of fish, fruits and vegetables. The breads were shaped
in the forms of arms crossed in prayer to keep a reminder that Lent was a time of prayer and penance.
The Latin term for these was bracellae, or "little
arms" (bracellae). The word "pretzel" comes from the
German word brezel or prezel.
INGREDIENTS:
1 pkg. yeast 1 1/2 c. warm water
1 t. salt
1 T. sugar
4 c. flour
DIRECTIONS:CTIONS
 Dissolve warm water, yeast, salt & sugar let stand
for a bit.
 Blend in the flour, and knead the dough until
smooth.
 Cut the dough into pieces. Roll them into ropes and
twist into pretzel shapes. You can make small pretzels with thin ropes, or large ones with fat ropes, but
remember that to cook at the same rate, your pretzels need to be all the same size.
 Place the pretzels on lightly greased cookie sheets.
 Brush them with beaten egg. Sprinkle with coarse
salt.
 Bake at 425º F. for 12 to 15 minutes, until the pretzels are golden brown.

WHAT’S HAPPENING!
OPPORTUNITIES AROUND THE ARCHDIOCESE
Friends of the Garden
Gardening season has begun! I've planted
snap peas in two beds so far (160 feet),
and the first bed's plantings are already
showing! Radishes have been planed
down the middle of both beds and will be up soon.
Mike Fisher, a member of the Parish Garden Committee,
helped me put up the replaced cover for the greenhouse. I
couldn't have done it without him; thank you Mike! I've
started a couple of trays of lettuce seeds in my basement,
and when they sprout, I'll move them into the greenhouse. So much fun!
Dan Hoffa has retired from St. Vincent de Paul and the Parish Garden Committee. Please welcome Kirston Burgher
and Jerry Gianotti as the new members of the Committee.
Please contact me if you:
Would like to volunteer in the Parish Garden?
Would like to have some space in the Garden for
your own?
Would like to learn how to grow vegetables?
Yours in Life,
Baruch Bashan
707.494.7666 [email protected]
AND … I know many of you were the recipients of starts
last year and you were grateful for how well they produced.
I will be having some starts available later—I will have lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes, cucumbers and cantaloupe. Let
me know your interest so I can plant accordingly.
CYO NEW and NOTES:
At Holy Family CYO we are very proud of our rich tradition and we celebrate that in many ways including at
the annual spring Legends & Legacy Reception. Geared as a community event to celebrate our
graduating athletes, the standout performances of the
past year and to serve as a connection for our current
families with our heritage here in southeast Portland. Save the date...Saturday evening, May
16th. All are invited and we hope to see you there!
