MAY 2015 Issue No. 5 Parkrose Business Association Katie Meyer PBA Executive Director APRIL GUEST SPEAKER FBI Representative, IDENTITY FRAUD It is only Spring in Parkrose, but the PBA already has its sights on the Fall! One of the PBA’s major projects this year is to promote Parkrose as a Halloween destination. We are picking up Historic Parkrose’ great retail marketing event, the Halloween BOGO, and adding a super fun, family friendly trick-or-treating event hosted by Parkrose businesses. The Halloween BOGO is a shopping event in which local retailers offer an item at buy one, get one half off around the time of Halloween. 2015 will be the events third year and the PBA is excited to pick it up, as Historic Parkrose focuses on more infrastructure projects. In conjunction with the shopping event, the PBA will be soliciting businesses to participate in Parkrose Trunk or Treat! Businesses come together in a big parking lot to offer safe, family friendly trick-or-treating to Parkrose residents. The businesses dress up their cars and themselves and offer candy out of their trunks! It is a marketing opportunity as well as a way to give back and engage with the local community. Parkrose High School is graciously allowing us to use their parking lot on Saturday, October 31st for the event. “J” from the FBI confirmed that cyber crime was a #1 priority the various task forces are dealing with. For the first time in Oregon we have in place a Cyber Crime Task Force. Change your passwords often and make them challenging is the constant advice. Whether you have Business Email Compromise (BEC) or other types of cyber crime, you have a resource at your fingertips. Report all crime! www.ic3.gov. We hope that all of the PBA businesses participate in the event! On a personal note, circumstances are forcing me to end my tenure as the Executive Director of the Parkrose Business Association. I have greatly enjoyed getting to know all of the great businesses in Parkrose and know many great things are ahead. In the coming months, the PBA will be getting a new staff person, as a part of the East Portland Pilot Project, and they will take over where I am leaving off. I look forward to seeing you all again and wish everyone great prosperity in business. [email protected]. Parkrose Business Association “Businesses for Business” Congrats to PNWFCU’s Judy Kennedy, with Pacific NW Federal Credit union on receiving the Oregon FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) Award for the Business Person of the Year in the State of Oregon! Judy also will be recognized at the FBLA National level in Chicago this June. Judy has dedicated a lot of time, energy and enthusiasm to Parkrose High School through the Financial Reality Fair, PTO/ PTA, the scholarship committee, fundraisers, and the FBLA committee, so it is great to see her efforts recognized! www.parkrosebusiness.org MARCH Highlights Know Your Neighbor Portland Disposal & Recycling Ray Salvi, Owner What does your business do/sell? We do disposal and recycling in the City of Portland. We have a contract with the City that picks up the majority of the residences in Parkrose. We also offer commercial services. Did you purchase the business or start the business? I am a second-generation owner. My dad started in 1946 and I took over his route in 1964. Through the years, I partnered with several other haulers and we bought and merged with many different companies. We are a family business. Both myself and my partners have several of our children and grand children working in the business. What inspired you to start your business? Back in the 60’s there were no large trash companies. Each man had his own truck and companies were one man/one truck operations. My dad ran his own line and he had a stroke when he was 55 years old. At the time, I had just come back from the service and was trying to figure out what to do for work. It was a natural fit to take over his route. And now here I am 51 years later! AN AMAZING EVENT !! April is the month that PBA members and guests generously pledge a donation to the Scholarship fund. As is our tradition for the last several years, Gordon Boorse (Compaction And Recycling Equipment) moderated the event. What is truly amazing is $6,850.00 was raised in only 15 minutes with additional funds being pledged from businesses! Parkrose Business Association/Foundation has awarded 63 scholarships totaling $65,500 from 1998 to 2014. This year, 2015, we will award 4 scholarships with each recipient receiving $2,000.00 each. When did you open in Parkrose and Why? Throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s we had been merging with several other one man companies. In 1995 we bought out a guy who had the Parkrose route and we have been doing that route ever since! What makes your business unique? Service and Longevity. We’ve seen a lot of garbage haulers go out of business over the years, and we endure. We are also really flexible and do not offer contracts. Many commercial businesses get into long contracts with some of the national companies and get stuck in situations that are unfavorable after some time. We provide flexibility and people like doing business with a local company. What is a hobby or interest of yours that is unique? I’m really into classic cars and I go to Arizona for several months every year to play golf and swim. I’m slowly stepping away and letting the kids run the business, but I’ll never retire! Wayne Stoll and Gail Bash, as always, add to the fun by outpledging one another. Wayne also gave a parting gift to those who pledged. When you see Wayne or Gail, ask them about the Babacar Bobblehead that Gail is holding. At the Thursday, June 18th luncheon PBA/PBF scholarship recipients will be presented to the membership. Put the date on your calendar! If you were not at the April PBA luncheon and would like to donate to the Scholarship Fund, email PBA Treasurer at: [email protected]. You will receive an invoice/tax deductible receipt for your records. www.parkrosebusiness.org DOOR PRIZE WINNERS 50/50 winner PBA President Mike Taylor Leadership Works, LLC Mike had the winning 50/50 ticket at the April meeting. As PBA/PBF Accountant William Keller hands the cash to Mike, Mike hands it right back with the desire to donate his winnings to the Scholarship Fund.
