v  We are doing a brain imaging study of people with
Fragile X Syndrome between ages 12 and 70.
v  We want to look at what the brains of people with fragile
X look like, and also how they work.
v  We will do this using a brain scanner called an MRI.
v  You should have a talk about the study with a relative or
someone who supports you.
v  It is your choice if you want to take part.

We are inviting adolescents and adults with Fragile X Syndrome to
take part in a study. This leaflet is to help you think about if you want to
take part. If you are interested, we can discuss it with you, and give
you more information. We will answer all your questions.
What is the aim of the study?
In this study we are using MRI brain scanning to examine
both the structure and function of the brains of individuals
with Fragile X Syndrome. We are trying to describe these
in as much detail as possible, so as to have a baseline
from which we can compare changes over time and with/
without medications. Particularly, we are interested in
which regions of the brain are most active when looking at
other people’s emotions.
Do you have to take part?
You don’t have to do it if you don’t want to. If you start the
study, you can stop at any time.
Where is the study taking place?
The study is taking place in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Who is doing the study?
Dr Andrew McKechanie, a doctor and researcher, is doing
the study.
What about expenses?
We can pay for travel and accommodation (if needed) for
the visit. We can pay for you and someone who knows you
well to come with you.
What will happen if I take part?
We will:
Ask you to visit us at these
two buildings in Edinburgh.
Ask you and someone who knows you
well some questions.
Ask you to practice having a brain scan.
Ask you to have a real brain scan.
