Though Barberitos Southwestern Grille & Cantina opened on 23rd Street in January 2014, I hadn’t been until a recent Friday — I Side Dish went twice that day. JAN WADDY “I probably know about every fourth customer that comes in here,” said manager Scott Goldwire, whose favorite is the “chicken fajita burrita.” Originally from Georgia, Goldwire first tried Barberitos in Athens, Ga. “I had no restaurant experience but I was familiar with the restaurant, a great concept ... the approach they take to freshness. We prepare everything every day, and the idea is to quit counting calories and start counting chemicals. We don’t add any chemicals or preservatives — down to our spices. They are specially blended, so we can control what’s in it.” All produce and herbs are naturally grown and all meats are completely hormone and additive free. The beef, from ground to steaks, also is grass-fed. “We marinate all of our meats in a marinade we make here,” Goldwire said.“We try to get as many things locally sourced as possible; we are part of Green Fields Together. We get our chicken from a specialty supplier, hormone-free chicken.” Though the tortillas are not made in-house, the chips are made fresh daily from the corn tortillas. The flour tortillas are the most popular for the tacos and burritos, and gluten-free tortillas also are available. “We go through close to 60 pounds of chips daily,” Goldwire said. “The Heavy D — a mild garden salsa variety, is the most popular. We make about 10 gallons of that a day, and about 15 gallons of salsa total.” The salsa bar features Heavy D salsa, Tomatillo salsa, Fire Roasted Poblano Salsa, Smoked Chipotle Hot of tilapia, lime, guacamole, tomatoes, cheese and cilantro — and added a small side of cheese dip at the register. Though I decided I would not order the tacos with fish again, everything else tasted so good and fresh, I knew I would be back to find what I would like better. I wouldn’t change anything about the thin tortilla chips with the Heavy D salsa. The Tomatillo salsa was a close second, and the smoky, slightly sweet Fire Roasted Poblano would probably be good on a fajita. The creamy cheese dip was a nice complement, but I wanted even more chips. (I found out I can order extra, and I will.) After spending the afternoon craving more chips and the chicken quesadilla I saw on the menu, I went back for dinner and brought my husband (who had been before and really liked the giant steak burrito) and our 8year-old son. “I hear a lot of people say, ‘We’re here because my kids wanted to come here.’ I say, ‘That’s fantastic! My husband switched his order up with the steak fajita burrito, which he also liked. “A regular burrito with nothing on it will be about 1 pound up to 23 ounces depending on what you put on it,” said Goldwire, who added,“The regular chicken burrito is the most popular.” Telling the lady behind the counter,“I would like the chicken quesadilla,” led to a slew of questions. She acknowledged this and took a comedic approach: Regular or spicy chicken? Flour or corn? Toppings? Side of sour cream? The regular chicken quesadilla with fresh pico de gallo and another sprinkle of cilantro had me finishing my basket, and our son finished his kids’ ground beef taco, plus one more, and his cookie. On Wednesdays we have dollar drinks ($1 wells, $2 calls, $3 top shelf) and on Thursdays, we have all you can drink for $10 (well drinks and draft beer). Who’s your favorite potion pourer? Do you know of some funky concoction we should feature? If you know a bartender who spills the best Sazerac or makes a margarita like no other email their info to [email protected] and we’ll send someone over to Meet the Mixologist. The 10-time Grammy Award winning jazz guitarist and singer George Benson, who goes on stage Friday night, also performed at Seabreeze in 2011. But this will be the first appearance for jazz vocalist Al Jarreau, a seven-time Grammy winner, and saxophonist David Sanborn, winner of six Grammy Awards. Benson and Jarreau both received a 2007 Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance for “God Bless the Child.” “This is the most Grammy winners we’ve had in any festival line up. Norman Brown also is a Grammy-award winner,” Carter said. “George Benson had a smooth jazz album that was nominated for the most Grammys by a jazz artist ever.” Jarreau goes on stage Saturday just before BWB, a group formed by guitarist and singer Norman Brown in 2002. BWB features Brown with saxophonist Kirk Whalum and trumpeter Rick Braun. Brown won a Grammy Award in 2003 for 2002’s “Just Chillin’,” his fifth album. Local ticket outlets include the Florida House and Pompano Joe’s at Pier Park, and festival tickets will be sold at the event. “As long as tickets are left, will be selling at them at the gate,” Carter said. “Saturday APRIL 22ND-26TH, PANAMA CITY BEACH, FLORIDA PRESENTED BY Call for tickets at 800-595-4849 BRIAN CULBERTSON PLEASE SEE Seabreeze | 20 1141435 1141206 Visit SeabreezeJazzFestival.com BEACH INSIDER SEABREEZE JAZZ FESTIVAL When: Gates open at 3 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday; rain or shine Where: Aaron Bessant Park Amphitheatre, 600 Pier Park Drive, Panama City Beach Seating: Bring lawn chair or blanket for General Admission seating; lawn chairs will be available for rent during festival Parking: General admission is in Pier Park; VIP and Gold Reserve: Turn on to West Park Drive from Front Beach Road and turn left at the stage to follow the signs to the designated areas. Last year, we sold out Saturday a few days in advance.” A new Gold Reserved Section with provided seating has been added this year right behind the VIP section, which is sold out. On Wednesday, about 20 tickets were left for the Gold Reserved Section. “Basically, it’s the VIP ticket without the food,” Carter said. Tickets will be in the form of high-tech wristbands from Intellitix, and the armbands will replace the need for cash or credit cards at the event. “This year the entire event is cashless. All food, merchandise and CDs will only be purchased through loading funds,” Carter said. Vendors only will accept swipes of the encrypted wristbands as payment. Registering and loading money on the armbands in advance will make the process even smoother. Bands also can be loaded and topped off at Top Up Stations in Aaron Bessant Park. The money that you don’t spend will be refunded. “We will have gourmet food trucks from Atlanta, Jacksonville and Tallahassee — offering things such as Mediterranean,” Carter said. “We will have some local — Smoke N Butts barbecue from Panama City Beach. Many will be from out of town, a lot more variety.” Bring empty sports bottles or water bottles for free water refills in the park at the Water Monster filling stations. The Seabreeze 106.3 FM is sponsoring a free Sunday after party at Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville in Pier Park. Doors open at 10:30 p.m., and the show starts at 11 p.m. Admission is free, with items from the restaurant’s full menu and bar available for purchase. The Seabreeze End of Festival After Party will feature Matt Marshak, Four 80 East, Marcus Anderson and Friends. “We have special guest artists who come and jam with them, but we never know who it will be until that night,” Carter said. Named “Top 10 Jazz Festival” by JazzIZ Magazine, Seabreeze brings in more than 25,000 fans for an upbeat and cool weekend of good vibes for all ages. “We’d like to see even more events in Panama City Beach that cater to families,” Carter added. We are predicting over 200 this year,” said Jason Brown, president of the German Metal VW Club Inc. “We have people coming from Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.” This year, a Pre-Show Meet and Greet Party will take place Friday night at C-Level Bar & Grill, 5508 Thomas Drive, with live music and beer and food specials. The party begins at 6 p.m., and the public is welcome. “A lot of people will be there from out of town,” Brown said. “Anybody can come out and look at the cars.” Brown began the German Metal vehicles and more elaborate modifications. For those looking to make their own mods, the event will feature a raffle for wheels. “We’re doing multiple raffles — wheels and a 50/50 raffle,” Brown said. “Last year we donated $3,800 to Anchorage Children’s Home. Half of the proceeds from the 50/50 raffle go to the charity, as well as proceeds from T-shirt sales and registration.” The Sugar Sands Roller Dolls, an all women roller derby team in Panama City, also will be at Spinnaker. The restaurant will be serving its regular menu. “We will have a hula-hoop contest, Volkswagen tattoo contest and a kids’ area with coloring for prizes,” Brown added. Anyone who has a tattoo of a Volkswagen is eligible for the tattoo contest. “One guy had his whole calf covered with a Volkswagen scene — a couple of buses and sunset,” Brown said. eac Clara Ave 747-5072 | @JanWaddy1 [email protected] members, ranging in age from 18 to 67, own old bugs, newer bugs — and both. “We all bond; we all have the same interests,” Brown said. “I have a 1957 Volkswagen single cab, a ’65 Camper/Bus, a ’56 Beetle and a ’72 Squareback.” The Volkswagen Type 2 panel van derived from the Type 1 (Beetle) and was introduced in 1950 by the German automaker. “Buses have now skyrocketed — going for $50,000 to $80,000 for the older ones,” Brown said. PANAMA CITY — A collaborative project involving Gulf Coast State College students, community volunteers and Bay Arts Alliance will culminate next week with the “world premiere” of an original musical production adapted from a novel written by local authors. “Miracle of the White Leaves: The Musical” will have one public performance, 7 p.m. Thursday at the Marina Civic Center in downtown Panama City. Bay Arts Alliance commissioned this hourlong children’s musical as part of the Arts in Education programming. It evolved through the input of many people during the GCSC 2014 Summer Theatre Project, which is funded by grants from the St Joe Community Foundation and the Gulf Power Foundation. For podcasts and more, visit MovietownMovieClub.com ‘WHILE WE’RE YOUNG’ “While We’re Young” is smart, funny, and written with a lot of intention. Unfortunately, it’s also a little too ambitious. Writer-director Noah Baumbach offers up some great dialogue, but he also gives us a product that is dramatically flimsy and not half as clever as it aims. The story follows a middleaged documentary filmmaker, played by Ben Stiller, and his wife, played by Naomi Watts, as their marriage becomes reinvigorated through their new friendship with a young, lively couple. Had “While We’re Young” been wise enough to concentrate on one or two narrative strands it may have been great, but instead we get a muddied, though very entertaining, mess of a product. Director: Noah Baumbach Starring: Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts, Adam Driver, Amanda Seyfried, It’s a film about a generational divide, growing old, staying young, marriage, parenthood, friendship, creative integrity, process vs. product, mainstream product vs. hipster product, and documentary vs. fiction, among too many other things. The film is at its best when it’s relaxed and without any agenda. As it develops, it becomes far less interesting, and its third act manages to somehow be predictable, zany and preachy all at once. It’s Baumbach’s middle-aged autobiography, and he comes across as a kind of grumpy old man, painting with broad strokes an aging generation as arbiters of values and truth and a new one that neither has values nor cares about truth at all. It’s more complex than that, to be fair, but fundamentally this is Friday, April 24, 2015 Movietown from Page 30 the picture he has created. “While We’re Young” brings the intended laughs but lacks its intended profundity. Rating: 3 out of 5 stars Longtime Panama City resident Cole Schneider, born in Long Beach, Calif., always has preferred popcorn and a movie to a long walk on the beach. Matt: ‘While We’re Young’ charms The older I get, the more I realize growing up and finding purpose doesn’t end at a certain age, and we only have so much of this life to enjoy. This overwhelmingly quick passage of time is looked at with humor and heart in 45year-old director Noah Baumbach’s (“Frances Ha,”“The Squid and the Whale”) most purely comedic film to date. Through hilariously relatable awkwardness and tons of misplaced conceit,“While We’re Young” presents a fear of aging that replaces gerascophobia with loads of laughs. Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts play a longmarried filmmaking couple who befriend and ultimately admire a young artistic pair and their apparent zest for life. Through Baumbach’s smoothly prompt style, the story SEE movietown | 31 Charles Grodin, Adam Horowitz, Maria Dizzia Rated: R (language) GO & DO The ENTERTAINER • 31 Find movie times, previews and buys tickets @ NewsHerald.com and on our app! of these hipsters moves along quite nicely, readily mining their pretentious and absurd community for all the comedy it holds. The script is full of some great lines that show a witty understanding of adulthood in all its stages. The cast also stands-out. I usually prefer Stiller in his more over-the-top roles (“Zoolander”), but he holds his own here. Watts is outstandingly cute, funny and honest; Adam Driver is charmingly abrasive; and Adam Horowitz, known more for his rapping than his acting, is so natural it’s hard to believe this isn’t his day-job. These older actors and filmmakers are clearly speaking from life experience, as the film studies the unique difficulties of growing old in youth-obsessed Hollywood. However, the ethical ambiguities of success and the dangers of personal pretension are universal. With so much light-hearted spunk, WWY’s surface-y themes are swept up in its ageless charms. Rating: 4 out of 5 stars Panama City Beach musician Matt Greene, who has a bachelor’s in philosophy from the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, always has enjoyed viewing, debating and critiquing all forms and aspects of film, from foreign films to slapstick comedies.
