CANARY ISLANDS Poema del Mar Early March was finally the time for the long, drawn out process for a new aquarium to be finalised. The founder and owner of Loro Parque and Siam Park in Tenerife has now received the Port Authority’s permission to build an aquarium on an area of 8,500 square metres at the Sanapú pier in Las Palmas. This should be one of the most spectacular and modern aquariums in the world and will surprise both tourists and residents alike. Especially for cruise passengers, the direct integration of an attraction at the port is an attractive option. A total of €30 million is likely to be invested in the project and construction will begin as soon as possible, with the opening of the aquarium expected in 2017. A huge underwater world The aquarium will have a total exhibition area of 12,519 square metres and the tanks will be filled with 7,509 litres of seawater and freshwater. As in Loro Parque and Siam Park, both of which have won numerous awards for their quality and environmental practices, the emphasis will be on sustainability at Poema de Mar. This ARONA There’s a fabulous new market recently opened in the El Cho / Parque de la Reina area. The delightful range of produce on offer includes plenty of delicious vegetables, of course, as well as stalls offering cakes and pastries, perfect for accompanying coffee. There is fish caught and sold by the fisherman himself, all from sustainable sources, and there is even a butcher. Even more exciting is that, in A new attraction for Gran Canaria Poema del Mar - a major new tourist attraction for Gran Canaria with a modern design includes, for example, that one of the most advanced desalination and filtration systems, as well as a photovoltaic plant, will be installed. In the 38 display tanks, around 300 different species of fish, birds, small mammals, amphibians and reptiles are to be exhibited. Also, interesting deepsea species and a selection of various sharks will bring the visitor closer to the world’s oceans. A major focus will be placed on the fish and creatures that inhabit the Atlantic Ocean around the Canary Islands, the Azores and along the African coast. Known Success Factors As with the two parks in Tenerife, the Gran Canaria project has been designed on proven success factors. For instance, there will be three main zones: A building will house the exhibition, another will home a giant jungle style garden, and part will be dedicated to technology and the care of guests. Sustainability is a big issue, to which the parks’ management, under President Wolfgang Kiessling, has been committed for many years, and his son Christopher Kiessling follows this principle. Therefore, modern techniques have been the pillar of this successful concept. On the other hand, building on the experience of the Loro Parque Foundation, emphasis is also placed on biodiversity and nature conservation. In this way, the already well-established close collaboration with the University of Las Palmas will be intensified. In addition, education is an important issue both to school groups and other visitors. The Poema del Mar will thus inform the public regarding the ocean and its inhabitants, endangered species, the risks of over-fishing, pollution of the ocean with plastic waste and the dubious practices of shark fishing, in which only the fins are cut off. Since 1994, the Loro Parque Foundation has participated in more than 100 species conservation projects in 30 countries, and donated over $15 million dollars. Preservation of the natural environment and the protection of its occupants will be a major topic at the marine aquarium n Poema del Mar. Continued from front page During the police investigation into the death of Philippe Vandendorpe, it transpired that the drug had often been used at the gentlemen’s club he attended. The incident follows a similar case in Gran Canaria in 2014, when six people were arrested after approaching tourists and inviting them into the Divinity Club, also in Playa del Inglés. Unsuspecting men, who thought they’d agreed to an erotic massage, would have the drug slipped into their drink and promptly pass out, only to wake bewildered, with their credit cards drained of funds. It’s widely known that women are at risk from sexual predators and date rape drugs, but men are also targeted and, with cases of burundanga use on the rise throughout Europe, all visitors to unknown areas are advised to exercise particular caution. Apart from the difficulties caused by the amnesia associated with the drug, many victims are also too embarrassed or ashamed to go to the police, so burundanga use can often be the perfect crime. In the case of the late Belgian businessman, the police have placed Sandra EM and Victoria K into custody and have also arrested both a waiter and the manager of the establishment. While the incident is under investigation, police do not n rule out further arrests being made. Burundanga is colourless, odourless and easily administered New farmer’s Market contrast to most other farmers’ markets, this new one will be open from 7am to 2pm all week long, with the exception of Wednesdays. To find the market hall, take the Parque de la Reina exit off the TF1 motorway and at the first roundabout turn towards El Cho / Las Galletas. From a distance, you will be able to see the main ‘Titsa’ bus station and the market is right n next door – enjoy.
