Peter Jezukevich announced that he started up the Sunshine Committee again, and will send a card in care of the PCE RA membership if you know of someone in the neighborhood who is ill, or Heav- en forbid has passed away. We formed a special committee, the Sign Committee, to develop and implement a plan to rehabili- tate the existing front entrance block sign, including landscaping, and to install a new wooden mes- sage sign at the Pavilion. NEIGHBORHOOD BLOCK PARTY COOKOUT We had our 1st Annual Neighborhood Block Party Cookout on March 1, 2015. Everyone in the neighborhood was invited and we had good weather and a great turnout. Special thanks to Matt and Jenny for cooking the hamburgers and hotdogs, and to everyone else who made the rest of the delicious food. The cookout was a success and we even got a few new memberships out of it! PROJECTS IN PROGRESS Sign Project - defined as the rehabilitation of the existing front entrance sign, including landscaping (with Option 1 being complete reconstruction, or Option 2 to modify existing), and to also install a new message sign at the Pavilion Sign Committee to bring a conceptual plan to the March 21, 2015 Regular Meeting, and members to vote on the plan at the April 18, 2015 Regular Meeting STREET AMBASSADORS We are still looking for volunteers to be our “Street Ambassadors” to help with passing out flyers;; to help keep members informed of upcoming meeting dates and events;; and to help welcome new neighbors and encourage new memberships. Please let Chelle’ know if you would like to volunteer. Thank you in advance! 2 PCE NEWS FUN-RAISING EVENTS We are soliciting members to join our FUN committee to handle promoting, scheduling, and host- ing the upcoming FUN-raising events, such as: Bingo nights Community yard sale Fishing tournament Other FUN activities or events??? If you would like to join this committee, please let Chelle’ know as soon as possible so that she will be sure to include you in emails and other communications. JOIN A CLUB Being part of a club is a good way to get to know your neighbors a little better by having something in common. Therefore, we’d like to start up the following clubs: Book Club - read a good book then share your thoughts Coffee Club - start your day out right at the Pavilion enjoying our beautiful view Birding Club - take advantage of our location across from one of the world’s best birding estuaries Angler’s Club - “Bait Your Own Hook, Clean Your Own Fish, Tell Your Own Lies” with all your new fishing buddies Kayaking Club - explore the backwaters of your own backyard Card Night - spend a fun evening playing cards Photography Club - get your photo on the cover of the PCE Newsletter Be on the look out for start dates and times for these clubs, and if you’d like to host the first meet- ing for the Book Club, or Card Night, then please let Chelle’ know. HOBBY WORKSHOPS If any of our members have a particular skill, such as: vegetable gardening, watercolor painting, refinishing old furniture, etc, and would like to share your knowledge, then please let Chelle’ know. PCE “I MADE A DIFFERENCE” AWARD We’d like to recognize the Pelican Cove East residents (members and non-members alike) who have made a difference in the lives of their neighbors or neighborhood. And Thank You in advance! 3 PCE NEWS CALENDAR OF EVENTS - MARCH 2015 1st Saturday Art Stroll/Gallery Walk: Stroll the Canal Street Historic District during the monthly 1st Saturday Art Stroll and Gallery Walk in the NSB Waterfront LOOP. On the first Saturday of the month, artistic vendors set up along the historic street from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., along with free concerts from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. in Christmas Park. Galleries feature solo and group exhibitions and artist talks in the Douglas Avenue area of the district from 4-7 p.m. Admission is free. Music Night at the Hub: On the second Friday of the month, the Hub on Canal hosts Music Night at the Hub. From 6-9 p.m. enjoy live entertainment. Member admission is free. The fee for non-members is $5. The Hub is at 132 Canal Street, New Smyrna Beach. Canal Street Cruise: Held the 2nd Saturday of each month, the Canal Street Cruise will be from 4-8 p.m., along historic Canal Street, New Smyrna Beach. Sponsored by the East Coast Cruisers, the family-friendly classic car show offers food and entertainment in a historic setting. Art Walk / Wine Walk on Flagler Avenue: Every 4th Saturday of the month, artists will be on Flagler Avenue from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. There will be fine arts exhibits, children’s activities, music and entertainment. The progressive wine tasting and wine walk starts at 1 p.m. New Smyrna Beach Farmers Market: Open every Saturday from 7 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Located on Sams Avenue in the historic district of New Smyrna Beach, in between City Hall and Old Fort Park. Beachside Farmers Market: Open every Saturday from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. Located at 400 E. 2nd Avenue (Norwood's Restaurant park- ing lot), New Smyrna Beach. Oak Hill Farmers / Flea Market: Open every Saturday and Sunday from 6 a.m. – 1 p.m. Located on US1 in Oak Hill. New Smyrna Speedway: Races held every Saturday night throughout the year at 8 p.m. Located at SR 44 and CR 415, the pro- grams will vary weekly but feature at least 6 different divisions. February 7 – March 28, 2015: New Smyrna Museum of History Presents... The Smithsonian is coming to the New Smyrna Museum of History! That's right the Smithsonian. During February and March 2015 the museum (120 Sams Avenue) will be home to a touring exhibit called The W ay W e W orked. This exhibit is co-sponsored by the Smithsonian and the Florida Humanities Council. The New Smyrna Museum of History is one of only six museums in the state that will be pre- senting this exhibit. As with all museum exhibits this will be free and open to the public. 4 PCE NEWS CALENDAR OF EVENTS - MARCH 2015 (continued) February 27 - March 15, 2015: Oklahoma! The high-spirited rivalry between local farmers and cowboys makes its way to the LOOP when the mu- sical, Oklahoma! opens at the Little Theatre of New Smyrna Beach. The show runs February 27 – March 1 and March 5-8 and March 12-15. All performances are at 8 p.m. except Sundays, which are 2 p.m. matinees. March 6-15, 2015: Bike Week The 74th Annual Bike Week will be held from March 6th to the 15th with venues in Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach, DeLand, and most points in-between. March 7, 2015: Downtown Music Festival III Music lovers are certain to find something to get their toes tapping March 7, from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m., in the Canal Street Historic District. As part of the Downtown Music Festival III, artists will play in several venues indoors and outside under the trees. Most performances are free. March 7, 2015: 4th Annual Waterwise Garden Fair The 4th annual W ater-Wise Garden Fair will be from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Saturday March 7, in the Utilities Commission parking lot, 200 Canal Street, New Smyrna Breach. Gardeners may learn how to con- serve water in the landscape. More than 25 cold-tolerant, low maintenance plants, trees and shrubs will be on display. Local merchants will also join the Utilities Commission to paint rain barrels for dis- play outside their businesses. Barrels will be raffle prizes. Children’s games and flower pot painting will also be offered along with expert talks on Florida-friendly gardening. March 11, 2015: ‘Island Education’ on Audubon Birding The New Smyrna Beach Island Education series continues March 11 with a class on Audubon birding. The one-hour class begins at 9 a.m. at Esther Street Beachfront Park, one block north of Flagler Ave- nue, and is part of a free educational series on the City’s barrier island. The class begins at 9 a.m. at Esther Street Beachfront Park, one block north of Flagler Avenue. The one-hour class is part of a free educational series on the City’s barrier is- land. March 20-22, 2015: Benji’s BluesDoggle This is a three day blues music festival, featuring award-winning artists from all over North America! Net proceeds benefit the Childhood Cancer Foundation, a local cancer charity supporting families in need. The event will be held at the Airport Field in New Smyrna Beach, FL. The grassy, open field venue is filled with shady oak trees and faces HWY US-1, just north of the Lost Lagoon Restaurant. Parking is on-site. March 20-22, 2015: Edgewater Riverfest and Business Expo The Edgewater Riverfest and Business Expo will be held on Riverside Drive between Kennedy Park and Menard May Park. The event happens on Friday, 5-9pm;; Saturday, Carnival 9am-9pm;; Business Expo 10am-4pm;; and Sunday, 1-5pm. Learn about local merchants, shop, enjoy music, have fun at the carnival, and indulge in a variety of tasty treats offered from gourmet food truck vendors. This is a fun, family-friendly event. March 25, 2015: ‘Island Education’ on Beach Safety The New Smyrna Beach Island Education series continues March 25 with a class on beach safety in- cluding run outs, rip currents, swift currents and public interaction with the shore. The class begins at 9 a.m. at Esther Street Beachfront Park, one block north of Flagler Avenue. The one-hour class is part of a free educational series on the City’s barrier island. March 28-29, 2015: 50th Annual DeLand Outdoor Art Festival The art festival will take place in Earl Brown Park, Deland, on Saturday, 10am-5pm and Sunday, 11am -3pm.
