T
he Santa Rosa
High School
auditorium is the
venue for a very
special performance by two
of Santa Rosa Symphony’s
four Youth Ensembles—the
Preparatory Orchestra and
the Repertory Orchestra—on
Saturday, May 2 at 3 PM.
At this concer t, the
Symphony celebrates the
20th anniversar y of the
Repertory Orchestra with a
new work commissioned for
this ensemble by Bay Area
composer Martha Stoddard.
Ms. Stoddard’s work, titled
“ T h o u g h t Pr o c e s s” , i s
based on the personalities
of the young musicians she
encountered during visits
with the orchestra.
The Repertory Orchestra,
founded in 1994, was
originally called the Discovery
Orchestra. The founding
conductor, William R. “Bob”
Williams (a violinist with
the Symphony’s professional
orchestra) held the position
until 2010. The Repertory
Orchestra is currently under
the baton of Bobby Rogers.
In addition to the world
premiere piece, the Repertory
Orchestra will play Mozart’s
Overture to “Don Giovanni,
Pirates of the Caribbean” as
arranged by Ted Rickets, and
Tchaikovsky’s “Peter and the
Wolf ”(with a narrator).
The Preparatory
Orchestra provides a solid
foundation for younger
students to learn to play
within a full orchestra under
the direction of a professional
conductor. Tristan Arnold
currently leads this orchestra.
Arnold is himself an
alumnus of the Santa Rosa
Symphony’s Training Young
Musicians program. The
Preparatory Orchestra will
play Beethoven’s Overture to
“Egmont”, “Dark Adventure”
by Ralph Ford, and Themes
from “Capriccio Italien” by
Tchaikovsky.
The Preparator y and
Repertory Orchestras will
combine for a performance
of Hofeldt’s “Song of the
Prairie”.
