Community Support and Health Services
“Accessible and affordable community and health services are crucial in keeping
seniors healthy, independent and active. This involves an appropriate supply of
aged care services conveniently located close to where older people live and
trained health and social workers to provide these services.” (1)
The topic of community support and health services spans a wide variety of programs and services offered in
a community. These include primary health services offered by family doctors or nurse practitioners,
alternative services such as those offered by naturopaths and community-based services that support aging
at home and promote healthy living through education and activities. Having good physical and mental health
enables older adults to continue participating in their community well into older age, a key feature of an agefriendly community.
Health Indicators
Preventing injury from falls is a significant public health
priority for older adults. Rates of ER visits for falls related
injuries are consistently higher in Peterborough than Ontario
as a whole. Older women in Peterborough are far more likely
to end up in the ER from a fall related injury as compared to
older men (2).
Oral health is an important part of overall health. Dental
insurance coverage rates are significantly lower for older
adults in Peterborough, with only 48.1% of people over the
age of 65 reporting access to dental insurance. However, this
figure is still higher than the provincial average which sits at
34.8% (3).
Health Service Coordination
In Ontario, Community Care Access Centres (CCACs) work to
connect patients with in-home and community-based health
care services. The Peterborough region is served by the

Central East Community Care Access Centre (CECCAC). The CECCAC has seven local branches, of which
Peterborough is one (local phone: 705-743-2212). The CECCAC provides information, health care referrals,
and direct access to qualified health care providers. In Peterborough there are 11 health care providers
contracted to provide care through the CECCAC (5).

In the 2013 fiscal year (April 2013 to March 2014) the Peterborough branch of the CECCAC created 5464
discharge care plans for patients transitioning from the hospital back to their homes. In this same period 7537

Links are local health care networks consisting of patient, caregivers,

Hospital Services
There is one regional hospital located in the
Peterborough region: The Peterborough Regional
Health Centre (PRHC). PRHC has an operating capacity
of 494 beds and an annual budget of $250 million (7).

In addition to running an emergency department and offering various screening and treatment services,
PRHC also houses a number of clinics that offer specialized geriatric services including the GAIN geriatric
assessment clinic and the Psychiatric Assessment Services for the Elderly (PASE) (7). PRHC is also one of many
participating Ontario hospitals who offer Geriatric Emergency Management (GEM) services. A GEM nurse
provides specialized frailty focused nursing services to older adults in the Emergency room and is linked with
the Geriatric Assessment Intervention Network (GAIN) clinic at the hospital (8).
Community Support Services
A number of community-based organizations provide support services for older adults in the Peterborough
Region.
The Peterborough Victoria Haliburton branch of the
Victorian Order of Nurses (local phone: 705-745-9155)
provides community-based health services for older
adults in Peterborough region. Of particular
significance are their adult day programs which
provide social, recreational, and therapeutic activities
for older adults who are frail, cognitively impaired, or
isolated (10).
The local branch of the Azheimer Society (local phone:
705-748-513) and Hospice Peterborough (local phone
705-742-4042) also provide community-based support
services and offer volunteer home visitors.

Community Care Peterborough also provides a variety of services that enable older adults to live safely at
home. These include transportation services, meal delivery services, and friendly visiting programs (11).
Community Care Peterborough operates eight offices in the Peterborough region.
