April 2015 Chamber Network News promotion • education • tourism What’s Inside: Together We Achieve More Good Morning Platteville Business After Hours Corporate Sponsors Member Updates April Calendar PLATTEVILLE REGIONAL CHAMBER Hello Members! March was a great month for the Chamber! The Wisconsin Governor’s Conference on Tourism, held in LaCrosse, was one of the best ever! We were able to network with tourism leaders throughout the State, hear some great presentations and participate in other activities where we were able to promote the Platteville community. We will be using the tools they gave us to make promoting our great area of the State even better. Membership retention is quite strong and we are seeing new members as well. We are on an aggressive path to recruit new members that will enable your Chamber organization to continue providing support and promotion of your businesses and organizations. Our 2015 Platteville Community Guide has just been delivered and it looks great! We are really excited about this year’s guide with the emphasis on promoting our community to visitors as well as highlighting our area veterans. Thank you to the Shopping News for our partnership in making this publication a show piece for promoting the City of Platteville. We will be celebrating National Tourism Week by hosting an open house on Tuesday, May 5th at the Chamber offices and Katie’s Garden. It will be in the form of a picnic lunch (local foods) and run from 11:30-1:30PM. Patrick Reinsma with the Wisconsin Department of Tourism will be joining us and talking about the economic impact of tourism on Grant County in 2014. This will be a great opportunity to see and hear how our economy is impacted by visitors coming to the area. Please plan to join us! Cost is only $10. Our newest event, Derby Day, is Saturday, May 2nd in the downtown area. This will be a great way to kick-off National Tourism Week! The event includes a costumed horse parade at noon followed by live entertainment, games and food in the area between Main/Mineral/Fourth/Oak Streets. Tickets are $10 in advance (available at the Chamber) and $15 at the gate. This is one you don’t want to miss! The Chamber staff is working at a fast pace to get ready for all the events, festivals, workshops and celebrations that we have planned in the next few months. We could always use some volunteers, so if you have a few hours or know of someone who may be interested, please let me know! Member Updates Rountree Gallery Artist of the Month at Clare Bank Wood Turner/ Artist Joe Grim is the artist of the month at Clare Bank in Platteville. He will have his work on display from April 1st - April 30th. Hello, my name is Joe Grimm. I have been turning wood every chance I get for the last 6 ½ years. I first experienced wood turning, when I was about 13, in middle school Industrial Arts class. I still have the candle holders that were my first work. I also made a baseball bat in high school but hadn’t used a lathe since. I’ve worked in the construction business 35 years with custom built homes my favorite part of the last 20 years. Working with wood has always been part of my life. My father helped me when I was young with my first 4-H projects for the Iowa County Fair. I turn all types of wood, but especially enjoy turning cherry burl both with and without natural edge. I have made many wedding and anniversary gifts for relatives and friends and even consignments from wood collected on family property to make the gifts mean that much more. Finding the right piece of wood is a large part of a beautiful finished project. Nature put it there, a wood turner just removes what is covering up the natural beauty. BLACK OUT JERSEY AUCTION RAISES NEARLY $13,000 FOR YOUTH HOCKEY BLACK OUT Game presented by Truck Country helps raise funds for Dubuque Youth Hockey Association The Dubuque Fighting Saints are committed to growing the game of hockey in the tri-state area, and the club’s post-game jersey auction following the February 28 game against Waterloo raised nearly $13,000 to benefit youth hockey. That evening marked the 3rd annual BLACK OUT GAME presented by Truck Country, and net proceeds from the special jerseys worn that evening will go to the Dubuque Youth Hockey Association to help grow hockey participation. “We’re proud of our relationship with the Dubuque Youth Hockey Association,” said Fighting Saints President Dan Lehv. “Along with outstanding partners like Truck Country and the generosity of Fighting Saints fans, we’re collectively working to grow the sport of hockey in the tri-state area, and events like the BLACK OUT GAME go a long way in introducing more kids to the sport we love.” The special jerseys brought back a similar look to the club’s BLACK OUT jerseys worn during the 2013-2014 season. The black uniforms featured the Fighting Saints primary “D-Logo” in chrome on the front of the jersey, with white, silver and red accents on the body on the uniform. In total, $12,750 was raised in the BLACK OUT jersey auction with net proceeds in excess of $10,000. Jerseys for all 24 players on the Fighting Saints roster, and the team’s mascot, Bernie the “The partnership with the Dubuque Fighting Saints is helping to make DYHA and the Junior Saints stronger,” said Jim Riley, President of the Dubuque Youth Hockey Association. “With opportunities like the BLACK OUT GAME with the Dubuque Fighting Saints, we are able to make hockey more affordable, and get more kids excited about participating. Once they get hooked on hockey, we have the benefit of a Fighting Saints presence in coaching help from staff and the players, which just makes the kids love the experience even more. These kids are Junior Saints now, but are dreaming of becoming a Dubuque Fighting Saint.” Platteville Public High School is looking for employeers to participate in the Platteville High School’s Job Shadow Program Signing up is easy - provide contact information for one or more people at your company who would be willing to take on students who are interested in their professions.
