Viking Voyager PLEASANT GROVE JUNIOR HIGH April 2015 pleasantgrove.alpineschools.org Principal’s Message—8th Grade Completion & Skyward Tool through email. Follow these steps to set up these regular emails: Parents and Students, Let me take this opportunity to share information with you on two important items. First, I wanted to r emind, or possibly communicate for the first time, the rationale behind 8th Grade Completion. It is important that all of our 7th and 8th grade students truly believe that 7th and 8th grade grades matter. We understand that credits do not count towards high school graduation until 9th grade. However, the skills and habits that 7th and 8th graders develop, as they work during these two years, are absolutely critical. Those students who decide they will “turn it on” once 9th grade begins often find themselves overwhelmed quickly because of a lack of executive skills that they should have developed during their 7th and 8th grade years. It is because of this that we hold a very symbolic graduation from 8th grade that we have called 8th Grade Completion. By walking across that stage and receiving their certificate of completion, both the parents and the student can be supremely confident that they are prepared with the skills to be successful in high school and to ultimately graduate with every option available to them as far as their future is concerned. We hope that every child who qualifies for the certificate will attend the ceremony and the dance and party that follows on May 27th. Second, I find it impor tant to share with you a great tool that is available through Skyward that gives you daily, weekly, or monthly updates on your child’s grades Go to the Skyward login page and enter your username and password. If you do not have this, please contact the front office and they can send this information to you. Go to the Skyward login page and enter your username and password. On the Home Page, click on "my account" at the top right area of your screen. Read through all of the options and click on the ones you would like to have. I highly recommend this option because you don’t have to remember to logon to Skyward on a regular basis to be in tune with where your child is in each class. The 6th graders who have registered are brimming with excitement for PGJH. We look forward to these brand new enthusiastic students. you are not certain your 8th grader should attend the completion ceremony, please contact his or her counselor. Last year the completion ceremony was filled with happy parents, siblings, grandparents, and teachers. So mark your calendars. Congratulations to the new 2015-2016 PALs-Peer Advocacy Leaders. We’d like to express our appreciation to our 9th grade PALs who served our school well. We had a fun breakfast to honor these amazing 9th grade PALs. 9th grade students who have failed any quarter of credit this school year, need to make up credit before entering the doors of PGHS. If your 9th grade student needs to make-up graduation credit note the following options. As always, we enjoyed our field trip to CLAS Ropes Course with our counseling groups as well as our PALs. CLAS Ropes Course is a unique series of team building exercises nestled in a park-like setting along the Provo River. Through handson challenges and experiences the students internalize concepts like problem solving, leadership, communication, conflict resolution, group cooperation, trust, teamwork and self-confidence. Page 3 April 2015 Getting Students College & Career Ready at PGJH We are wrapping up a wonderful year in Career and Technical Education. The CTE Team has pushed forward this year with opening up many new opportunities for students to learn and polish career skills, gain leadership experience, and organize service opportunities for group participation that will build resumes and applications for college and careers in their future. With three student organizations now available for students to join in our school, there are many more leadership positions available to them as well as great activities to strengthen friendships, network for their future, and gain experiences to enhance college and career readiness. We have three great Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO) that have strong chapters at our school now. Get your student involved in one of these chapters starting next year! It really is the best place for them to learn these important leadership skills for their future success. Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) has had a strong chapter here at PGJH for 8 years. This year we have had 68 members, 16 Region STAR Event Competitors, 13 State STAR Event Competitors, and 5 National Qualifiers in Competitive Events. We even had 5 participate in the National Cluster Meeting in Salt Lake City in November where 4 competed in Skills Demonstration Events. Gabie Labrum took 1st place in Impromptu Speaking. We have had huge success this year in our activities and projects including helping 75 angels receive Christmas gifts this year through Angel Tree. We also sponsored the first Jr. Viking Leadership Academy which provided quality training and experience taught by district, state, and national leaders. We have a great legacy of leadership for FCCLA here at PGJH with starting strong leaders that then continue on to state and national positions after starting in our chapter. We have had 9 former members of our chapter serve as state officers and one national officer. We start them strong to continue on to great future opportunities! Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) started a chapter this year. They have had 20 members, 10 competed at state, and 4 qualified for Nationals. We did a Teddy bear service project where we collected Teddy bears from any students at the school. We contributed 8 large bags, over 1,000 Teddy bears, to the women's shelters in the area through the Bank of American Fork. We went on three field trips to REAL Salt Lake Soccer stadium, InKredibles T-shirt printing business, and the Adobe campus in American Fork. We are having our closing social with the high school FBLA on May 1, and May 9 is our FBLA Lagoon Day with the other chapters in the state. This has been a great jumpstart year for FBLA. Technology Student Association (TSA) also started a chapter this year. They have had 20 members with 8 participating in the State Competition. They completed many different projects throughout the year, including the Canned Food Drive for CTE Month in February where we collected 1,077 cans to donate to the local food bank. FBLA Teddy Bear Service Project We encourage every student to get involved with these wonderful leadership opportunities. We look forward to seeing your student in one of these great organizations next year! Thank you for your support!
