Dear Parent,
All students entering grades 6-12 for the 2015-2016 school year have received a copy of the 2015
RCPS Summer Required Reading Novel List, which includes grade-level book titles with a brief
summary of each book. To better equip students for success with these reading assignments, teachers
will be conferencing with students about their book selection during the month of May. Each student
will read a book from the required reading list for his/her appropriate grade-level and take an
assessment on that novel in August. In addition, students are required to read a second text of his/her
choosing. Although there is no written requirement for the choice text, we hope you will discuss the
benefits of reading with your child and encourage him/her to select additional titles to read this
summer.
2015 RCPS Summer Reading Requirements:
 Students must read one novel from the required reading list for the grade level they will enter for
the 2015-2016 school year.
 Students will take an assessment on the required novel they selected in August.
 Students must read a minimum of one choice novel, article, etc., based on their own interests.
Research suggests that students need to read widely over the summer to maintain their reading skills.
Moreover, students who do not read during the summer months tend to lose academic ground. For
more information on summer reading, please visit the National Summer Learning Association website
at http://www.summerlearning.org/ or the Georgia Department of Education summer reading website
at http://www.gadoe.org/Curriculum-Instruction-and-Assessment/Curriculum-andInstruction/Pages/Georgia-Summer-Reading-Challenge.aspx.
If you have any questions about this program, please contact your child’s language arts teacher or
Erika Y. Tucker, RCPS K-12 English Language Arts Coordinator at 770-918-6180 or
[email protected].
Sincerely,
Erika Y. Tucker
