Being Observant
My colleague Rabbi Sue Levi
Elwell remembers a conversion
for which she was present. The
gioret—the individual choosing Judaism—announced to the
beit din—the rabbinical court, “I
am becoming an observant Jew.
(Rather than have those present
think she was becoming Orthodox, she continued) I will pay
attention and be intentional about
my Judaism all the days of my
life.” That wonderful Jew taught
all those present that we should
not associate the word observant with how many of the
mitzvot we observe but that there are so many ways to
fulfill the challenge of living a rich Jewish life if we observe
and remember, paying attention to the mitzvot and to our
lives.
This is of course what I like about this holiday of Passover.
The festival and its observances force us to pay attention.
If we are mindful of what we eat all week, we can’t help
think about the experiences of our ancestors and pay attention to oppression in our own day. If we fulfill the rituals of a seder, we can’t help but want to make a difference
in lifting others out of slavery in the many ways that we
encounter it. In my family, we never kept kosher, but we
didn’t eat pork, or bread during Passover. We were always
mindful and observant during Pesach, understanding what
the bread of affliction might be for us—understanding
what it meant to welcome the stranger.

From beginning to end the Exodus story is woven with the
themes memory and forgetfulness. Our story of Exodus
begins, “A new king arose over Egypt who did not know
Joseph.” The redemption of the Israelites begins when
“God remembered the people and took notice.” The Children of Israel leave Israel and remember to bring Joseph’s
bones with them on their journey to the Promised Land.
Legend tells us Moses seeks out an old woman, Serah, a
historian, to locate the bones, to remember.
As we observe this Passover and remember this sacred
time, we remember to pay attention like to regain the history of our sufferings and joys, to tell of our wanderings
and to be observant—to be mindful of the world around
us and pay heed to our inner lives as well, each of us becoming historians and observant Jews.
We remember Joseph and Moses and Serah. We remember God’s promise to us and our covenant with God. We
observe and are mindful of the ways that God works in our
lives—supporting us through sufferings and joys and wanderings, helping us to be mindful of others, to live our lives as
observant Jews.

• Rockdale Temple is now incandescent free! All of our
interior bulbs are CFL or LED, except those involved
in our worship program. We’re still looking for ways

The Boomers were having fun again. On Saturday, March 7,
they attended and patronized the Essex Studios Art Walk and
dined at the Blue River Gastro Pub. More exciting times are
being planned including attending a baseball game and riding
the Bourbon Trail. This is a great way to have fun and socialize.
Speaking of fun, we all had a great time celebrating Purim on
Sunday, March 8. The cast of I Just Can’t Wait to be Queen
(A Lion King Purim Shpiel) gave their all and did a great job.
Our Brotherhood provided and served food. YGOR (Youth
Group of Rockdale) ran a fantastic Purim Carnival. Special
thanks to Sam Kocherov for providing the hamantashen. It
was a fantastic day for all.

The recent death of Leonard Nimoy, that is Star Trek’s
Mr. Spock, has left us without the man who was probably
the most recognizable, and perhaps most beloved, Reform
Jew in the world. One does not have to be a Trekkie to
mourn his passing. Many Jews may not be aware of his
magnificent contributions to Jewish life and culture and his
role as an ambassador for Reform Judaism. In addition to
his television and movie career, Nimoy was, especially in the
last 25 years, a tireless advocate for Judaism. He performed
the role of Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof many times. He
narrated, along with Cincinnati-native Sarah Jessica Parker,
the highly regarded documentary on Hassidism in America.
He narrated numerous radio programs on Jewish music for
the Milken Archive (with which we should all be familiar),
narrated Jewish High Holiday music performed on CDs by
the wonderful group, The Western Wind, and published a
book of his own photographs of women as manifestations
of the Shechinah, the feminine manifestation of the Divine.
Then there were his many Public Radio readings of Jewish
Stories over the years. Although he resisted going to Germany because of the Holocaust, even at the relentless invitation of German Trekkies, he finally went and was received
with enthusiasm surpassing any other representative of the
Jewish world. Nimoy was never shy about speaking up about
his dedication to the Reform Movement, not only his devotion to Judaism.
I mention Nimoy here because I wonder who in the world is
now the most visible and beloved ambassador of Reform Judaism. Of course, we have many great rabbis (including ours
in Cincinnati!) and leaders in the Union for Reform Judaism,
at Hebrew Union College, and in the Central Conference of
American Rabbis, our three Reform institutions. Indeed, the
URJ, our “parent organization,” along with its sister institutions (all founded in Cincinnati, let us remember) are very
busy building the future of our Reform Movement. In addition to our “new” prayerbook, Mishkan Tefilah, soon we will
have a new High Holiday prayerbook to consider. In the
past month alone, there have been on-line seminars from the
URJ about every three days, all available to temple leaders
across the country to help us improve our temple leadership.
There is so much work going on within our Movement, it is
sometimes overwhelming.

considered the financial implications of this, even held a special
board meeting to discuss the matter. After analyzing the budgetary
implications over the three-year
extension—most importantly
including the money now committed by the Jewish Foundation
of Cincinnati for the specific purpose of underwriting our
Assistant Rabbi—the financial cost of this three-year extension beyond the grant money is quite small. And there
was universal support in the board for Rabbi Kahan and
gratitude for the added value she brings in many ways to
our temple’s future. So, your board continues to be fiscally
prudent, even as we are forward-thinking.
There is always much going on at your temple. If you are
on the fringes, come engage a little more and see what you
like—or start a new activity. When I look through our
membership directory I am reminded of how much I miss
seeing many of you—and of how many of you I have not
met. The world, including the Jewish world, around us is
changing very fast, but with your engagement Rockdale
will not fall behind. In one of his Star Trek roles, Mr.
Spock says to Captain Kirk, “Change is the essential process of all existence.” Indeed, change is the only thing that
never changes. We need every member to come together
on our journey in Judaism, the final frontier. These are the
voyages of Rockdale Temple. Our mission: to explore new
spiritual worlds, to seek out new Jewish life and build Jewish civilization, to boldly go where no Jew has gone before!

April Update
In the book from our Rockdale Library, Judaism and
Ecology edited by Aubrey Rose, I found this Midrash:
Two men are facing each other in a rowing boat. One is drilling a
hole in the bottom of the boat beneath his seat. The other protests as
water pours in through the hole. The man continues drilling and replies, “But it is only under my seat” “ Yes.” replies his friend, “But we
are in the same boat, and if you don’t stop we shall both be drowned.”
This Midrash applies to all of us for we are all in the same
boat on planet earth. We go through our everyday actions not
realizing we are drilling holes under our seats. One step in
the right direction is that we can change the way we buy food.
Buying locally, sustainably grown food is an important choice
we can make for our health, the environment and food security,
especially in light of climate change and related drought in
areas that currently produce most of our food.
Locally grown produce is generally healthier and tastes better
as a result of shorter time from farm to table. This decreases
the loss of nutrients compared to older food that has traveled
by rail, truck or plane, sits in warehouses, and is sold 4 to 7
days after it is picked. Industrial farms limit to varieties that
withstand harvesting equipment and can survive packing and
shipping. Increased CO2 emissions result from the transporting
of industrial farm food thousands of miles.
In contrast to industrial farms, local farmers grow a huge number of varieties, including wonderful heirlooms with genetic
material from thousands of years of selection. They may someday provide the genes needed to create varieties that will thrive
in a changing climate. Local farmers pick the crops at their
peak and farmstead products are hand-crafted for best flavor.
Local farmers are not anonymous and take their responsibility seriously. They sell directly to the consumer taking out the
middleman.
Economically, local sustainably grown food keeps taxes down,
according to the American Farmland Trust, whereas industrial farms receive large tax breaks and contribute little to local
revenue. Factory farm materials are bought from large corporations rather than from local feed and hardware stores hurting
the local economy. When living near factory farms, property
values decrease due to strong unpleasant odors from large scale
livestock production and/or air and water pollution from heavy
chemical usage.
Fewer than 1 million Americans now claim farming as their
primary occupation. By supporting local farmers today, you
can ensure that there will be farms in our community tomorrow, and that future generations will have access to nourishing,
flavorful and abundant food. Stop drilling holes under your seat
and protect the future of everyone in this boat.

Here is what you can do now. Buy locally organically
grown food at small food markets, local farmer’s markets, and through a local Community Support Agriculture (CSA) Program. Ask you grocery store manager to
stock locally grown organic food. Rockdale has supported the OUR HARVEST CSA as a drop off point
for weekly produce pick-up. Though Rockdale will no
longer be a pick-up location, we encourage you to check
their website for their other locations. https://www.

For the past 5 years, the Environment Committee has
provided vegetables or fruit trees to Sunday school
students. This year is no exception. David Rosenberg has
started organically grown garden vegetables that will be
ready for students to pick up at Rockdale, May 3rd, the
last day of class. Plant them in a pot or in your garden
and enjoy your own locally grown vegetables!

Deborah Levine shares lessons and stories from her recent book. Her
storytelling blends family, history, and humor. The stories include eye-witness
accounts of the early years of the women’s movement, of immigrant experiences
and lessons from those with disabilities. She also includes letters and diaries
from the German front during World War II, written by her parents Estelle
and Aaron Levine, Rockdale congregants (Estelle was the beloved educator at
Rockdale for many years until her death in 1988).
Deborah will inspire your own leadership for change as well as facilitate a lively
discussion. Brunch will be served.

is more than welcome to join you on the
Bimah for the blessings and the candle
lighting.
