ALBANS
BROOKLYN
St. Albans is a middle class community in the New York City
borough of Queens centered around the intersection of Linden
Boulevard and Farmers Boulevard, about two miles north of
JFK Airport. The Colorful Mural on Linden Boulevard depicts
some of the neighborhood’s most noted African-American residents of the past: James Brown, Cab Calloway, John Coltrane,
Lena Horne. But if a mural were to be painted today, the faces
would hail from the Caribbean. St. Albans, a bastion of the
city’s African-American middle class for most of the last century, is the new neighborhood of choice for Jamaican-Americans
looking to move up the economic ladder. They are claiming
this tranquil corner of southeast Queens for their shops and
restaurants, leaving behind overcrowded rentals in Brooklyn.
It is quiet, peaceful, and different - it is definitely different. Now
colloquially referred to as “Little Kingston”, St. Albans, with all
its Jamaican inhabitants, has imparted a semblance of the
little island of Jamaica, with the emergence of these Jamaican restaurants, recreational parks and annual Jerk Festivals.
These tokens give a spirited atmosphere, kindred to true Jamaican culture. Especially, with the annual festivals, serving
as a commemoration of Jamaican’s love for music, dance and
food. Little Kingston, is an honest town that lends an unabashed peak into Jamaica’s vibrant and bold culture.
