Water-saving garden tips shared
I’m no weather person,
but I’m thinking surely
we’re in for warmer days
and the cold weather is
gone (I hope).
The warmer weather and
longer days have got me
thinking about the outdoors.
After a winter that felt like
it would never end (I always
feel like that, by the way),
it’s finally time to start
thinking about summer
blooms and getting things
in order.
Quick question for you
first. How did your tulips
do this year? Mine did terrible, but I’m not sure that
was the weather or the fact
that my dog most likely
dug up the bulbs. Any input
would be appreciated.
Anyway, back to the task
at hand, summer blooms
and watering. I’m sure you
are all well aware of the
major drought going on in
parts of this country, particularly California and the
water restrictions they are

under. I believe we all need
to start looking at ways to
conserve before it’s too
late.
• Pick plants and flowers that are drought-tolerant. These types of things
are great when you’re gone
on vacation. How many
times have you forgotten to
have someone water your
flowers while on vacation
and come home to a bunch
of shriveled sticks? One
summer I had the most
beautiful pot of petunias
before vacation ... came
home, they were dead.
Admittedly, I will always
plant at least one pot of
petunias, though, because
their smell reminds me of
my grandma. According to
www.bhg.com, the best
drought-tolerant flowers
are:
• Blanket flower — A
tough prairie plant, gaillardia, that blooms all summer
into fall.
• Yarrow — Achillea —
You will be doubly happy
with this guy, because it is
beautiful in fall arrangements. I used it all of the
time at the flower shop.
• Russian sage — This
works well for a back border and deer and rabbit
don’t like it. It is also very
fragrant.
• Mojave sage — A
beautiful variety of sage
with pink blooms that continue into the fall.
• Add more mulch.
Applying three inches of
mulch will help keep the
soil moist and weeds at
bay.
• Get a rain barrel. I
have looked at these at
home improvement stores
in the past, but haven’t
really spent much time
researching them. I believe
this summer it’s high time
for me to invest in one. For
every inch of rain that falls
on 1,000 square feet of
roof, you can collect about
600 gallons of water.
Besides providing a water
source, these eco-friendly
barrels reduce the amount
of runoff flowing into
waterways.
I hope you all had a
wonderful Easter weekend.
It’s time to get out there
and enjoy the beauty of the
outdoors and get to planting. Glenda Wise of Poteau

Testimonial Talk
Linda Schmuck
Richard’s
salvation
Thirty-three years ago, my husband came in from work
and sat down in his recliner with his Pepsi and cigar. A car
came into our driveway. “Who is it?” he asked. I answered
that it was the preacher from the church Doug and I had
been attending. When I went to answer the door, I heard the
another door close. When the preacher came into the house,
Richard was no where to be found. I told the preacher he
was somewhere outside, and he said he would go look for
Richard. I went out the front door and around the side of the
house. There is a small door that goes under our house, and
I noticed the lock on it was undone. I opened the door and
found Richard sitting on some tires smoking his cigar and
drinking his Pepsi in the dark, “Richard, what do you think
you are doing? Do you think you can hide from the Lord?
Come out this instant, or I am going to call that preacher
who is walking in the pasture, and he will sit with you here
in the dark.” Richard was so angry, “I will get you back for
this. You will pay for this.”
I called for the preacher to come back. He stayed and we
visited for a couple of hours. When he started to leave,
Brother Burton Perry invited Richard to church. Richard
promised to be there on Sunday. At 4 a.m., I heard Richard
up, “What are you doing?” I asked. He answered, “Can’t
you hear that water outside our bedroom window? It sounds
like Niagara Falls. Can’t you hear it?” I told him that I did
not hear anything. “Well I do. It woke me, and a voice spoke
to me out of it and asked me, ‘Richard, what if you do not
have until Sunday?’ I am going to church right now.”
“Don’t you think I should call the preacher since it is 4
a.m. and no one will be at the church?”
“You do what you think best. All I know is that I am
going to church now and give my life to God.” Out the door
he went. Perry later said that he had just opened the door to
the church, and Richard ran past him and to the altar. They
stayed at the altar for a couple of hours, because a couple of
men on the way to work saw the church open and stopped.
They had a revival and time of rejoicing for a while. Richard
came home an entirely different person. He has not looked
back. I and our family have been so blessed to have him as
head of our home.
Soon after that great day, I read in Revelation 1:15 and
14:2 that God’s voice is ‘as the sound of many waters.’ God
loved Richard and wanted Richard to serve him. He had a
plan for Richard. I am so thankful. Did that make us perfect?
No, but serving God has helped us to find solid ground when
everything seemed lost. Did that keep Satan from sending
temptation or problems? No, but we knew we could count
on God, we have had to go to the Bible for answers to problems so many times, and God has never steered us in the
wrong direction. Thank you, Jesus, for all you do every day
in our lives. If you don’t give us another blessing, you have
already given us far more than we deserve. Thank you.

Temptations of Jesus
Immediately after Jesus was baptized, he went into the desert. He
fasted and prayed for 40 days. At the
end of that period, Satan tempted
him.
“Then Jesus was led up by the
Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And when he had
fasted 40 days and 40 nights, afterward he was hungry.” Now when the
tempter came to him, he said, “If you
are the son of God, command that
these stones become bread.” But he
answered and said, “It is written.
‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that proceeds from
the mouth of God.’” Then the devil
took him up into the holy city, set
him on the pinnacle of the temple
and said to him, “If you are the son of
God, throw yourself down. For it is
written, ‘He shall give his angels
charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands
they shall bear you up, lest you dash
your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said
to him, “It is written again, ‘You
shall not tempt the Lord your God.’”
Again, the devil took him up on an

Where are we now?
If you have read the 24th
chapter of the book of
Matthew, you will be aware
that the things spoken of
may be beginning to happen. There is a seven-year
period that is called the
Great Tribulation. It speaks
of the days before the Lord
Jesus comes back to collect
his people who have been
loyal to him. There are
many theories about when
this shall all begin. But
Saint Matthew had it all
laid out in the 24th chapter
of Matthew. It is called
“The Olivet Discourse.”
The seven-year period is
divided into three parts.
The disciples came to Jesus
after he had told them the
temple would be destroyed,
they were anxious to learn
what will come to pass
concerning their relationship with him and about
the time of Jesus coming
back and of the end of the
world. Matthew 24 says,
beginning in verse 4, “Take
heed that no man deceive
you, for man shall come in
my name, saying, ‘I am
Christ; and shall deceive
many.’” Ever since I have
been a Christian, I have
heard of the time the tribulation. It is a seven-year
time and this world shall
see the time that will make
people pray for the Lord to
come back and take them
out of this world. It will
seem to be Hell on earth.
The reason I am writing
this is to warn those who
might not know that it is
possible we are entering
that terrible time. If you
read that chapter of
Matthew you will see what
I am talking about. The
things that happen in that
seven-year period are devastating to say the least.
Just check to see if you
have experienced hearing
the following words of the
Lord, “For many shall
come in my name, saying, I
am Christ, and shall deceive
many.” Think back to the
past years and how many
men have supposedly tried
to get their people to believe
that they were the Lord.
Also they have looked for
the money to satisfy their
need to be worshiped and
have already deceived hundreds of people. Verse 6
Love from Latham
Betty Qualls
says, “And you shall hear
of wars and rumors of
wars.” Wow that is something we hear on television
every day. And in my own
words it’s said; “Nation
shall rise against nation and
there will be famines and
pestilences and earthquakes
in diverse places.” Jesus
said, “These are the beginning of sorrows.” And we
are now hear of earthquakes
in places where they had
never been before. I am
from California and I have
seen earthquakes and they
are pretty upsetting. Now
they are having some here
in Oklahoma. Also, we are
hearing about other places
that are having their first
ones. The Bible goes on to
say, in Verse 9, “Then shall
they deliver you up to be
afflicted and shall kill you.”
There will be people killed
and Christians shall be
hated. Did you read about
the killing of 140 Christians
last week because they
were Christians. In the
times of the tribulation you
will be ask if you are
Christian and will be killed
if you say yes. Wouldn’t
you choose to be in Heaven
than to be on the earth during that terrible time? Of
course we all would but we
need to pray more for those
we know are not ready to
go to Heaven. That’s the
only thing that will keep
our loved ones from being
sent to Hell because of their
sinful lifestyle. That’s our
job.

Religion or Christ
By nature man is a pleasure seeking animal. He
was created in the image
of God, but that image has
been so marred by sin that
men are now totally
depraved. Adam fell by
disobedience to a simple
command. His descendants, unless God intervenes in their lives, spend
their money, time and
energy in pleasure. Many
people, uneasy about their
eternal destiny, find pleasure in religion. This is
true worldwide. All of the
world’s religions have one
thing in common except
biblical Christianity. The
one thing that all the
world’s religions have in
common — including a
great many that pretend to
be Christianity — is this:
they all believe that they
will be saved by their
works. Some may think to
please their god and be
saved by making a pilgrimage to a supposedly
holy place. Others by bathing in some river. Others
by being baptized, supposing that obedience produces eternal life. Only biblical Christianity says what
the Bible says: “For by
grace are ye saved through
faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of
God: Not of works, lest
any man should boast,”
(Ephesians 2:8-9). Plain
words these and easily
understood, but seldom
believed.
The Bible is quite specific. Speaking of Christ,
Peter said, “Neither is
there salvation in any
other: for there is none
other name under heaven
given among men, whereby we must be saved,”
(Acts 4:12). But he did not
mean mere religion in the
name of Christ was sufficient to bring salvation. In
fact Jesus spoke of very
zealous religious folk who
in spite of their religion
— or rather because of it
— would be lost. Christ’s
words are found in
Matthew 7:21-23 as follows: “Not every one that
saith unto me, Lord, Lord,
shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that
doeth the will of my Father
which is in heaven. Many
will say to me in that day,
Lord, Lord, have we not

prophesied in thy name?
and in thy name have cast
out devils? and in thy
name done many wonderful works? And then will I
profess unto them, I never
knew you: depart from
me, ye that work iniquity.”
Prophesying, casting out
devils, performing many
miracles — and all in
Christ’s name — religious
folk think all these kinds
of things indicate their
acceptability. But Christ
said they meant nothing
because he did not know
them. They claimed to
know him, but that claim
did not matter.
What matters is this:
does Christ know you?
Religion talks about
accepting Christ. The
Bible talks about people
being made acceptable in
the beloved — in the
Beloved Son of God. Paul,
in Ephesians 1:6 wrote
about himself and other
genuinely saved people
saying that God “hath
made us accepted in the
beloved.” Mere religion
will not do. Only by being
made accepted in Christ is
there salvation. Being
made accepted is a work
of God, not of man or his
religious deeds and efforts.
“Ye must be born again.”
(John 3:7).

MEMORANDUM:
GALATIANS 3
For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written:
“Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the
Book of the Law.” 11 Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before
God, because “the righteous will live by faith.” 12 The law is not based on
faith; on the contrary, it says, “The person who does these things will live by
them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse
for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.” 14 He
redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the
Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise
of the Spirit.
GALATIANS 5
1
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let
yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. 2 Mark my words! I,
Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no
value to you at all. 3 Again I declare to every man who lets himself be
circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law. 4 You who are trying
to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen
away from grace. 5 For through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the
righteousness for which we hope. 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision
nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith
expressing itself through love.

You will be involved in many
diverse and stimulating situations this year. Your intuition
will help you accomplish all
that you set out to do. Avoid
becoming overstressed or anxious. Hone your skills to ensure
that you are ready for any
career changes you want to
pursue.
ARIES (March 21-April 19)
-- Emotional clashes are likely
if you are not true to your word.
You can't be everything to
everyone, so put yourself first.
Don't make promises you can't
keep or plans that are
unrealistic.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20)
-- Avoid conflicts. Do your best
to listen to and observe what's
going on around you. Elderly
relatives will offer interesting
insight into your family history.
Rethink your strategy.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20)
-- Take time for relaxation and
pampering. Stretching yourself
to the limit daily can cause
minor injuries and stress. Spend
a day doing whatever makes
you happy.
CANCER (June 21-July 22)
-- You must realize that not
everyone will agree with your
opinions, methods or decisions.
Treat others' opinions with
respect if you wish to avoid
conflict.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)
-- Consider making a career
move. Delve into information
that will help you start a business from your home. There are
many courses and seminars that
could provide you with entrepreneurial strategies.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
-- Someone from your past will
return to your life. Plan to take
a trip to a nearby place of interest. Romance is looking hot.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23)
-- If you pry into someone else's
business, you will end up
regretting it. Joint ventures and
gullibility will lead to disappointment and loss. Rely on
factual information, not
hearsay.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22)
-- Family members will be difficult or demanding. Make
plans to go out with friends or
work on a pleasurable hobby
away from any turmoil.
Creativity and imagination are
highlighted.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21)
-- Don't spend money thoughtlessly, or you will have trouble
meeting your fiscal obligations.
Set a strict budget. Let a financial professional guide you.
Conservative long-term investments will pay off.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
-- Your emotions will be close
to the surface. Think twice
before you say something that
could damage an important
relationship. Reasonable concessions will help solve issues.
Prepare to compromise.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 19)
-- Don't risk your reputation by
becoming involved in secretive
plots. Pick and choose your
partners wisely and abide by
your code of ethics, no matter
what others do.
PISCES (Feb. 20-March 20)
-- Focus on your home. Making
personal improvements or
redecorating your space will
bring you satisfaction and comfort. Take a look at other houses
in your area for ideas.

Today is the 101st day of 2015
and the 23rd day of spring.
TODAY'S HISTORY: In
1814,
French
emperor
Napoleon Bonaparte abdicated
the throne and was banished to
the island of Elba.
In 1945, U.S. forces liberated
the Buchenwald concentration
camp.
In 1951, President Harry
Truman relieved Gen. Douglas
MacArthur of his command in
Korea.
In 1979, Ugandan dictator Idi
Amin was overthrown.
In 2006, Iran announced that it
had successfully enriched uranium.
TODAY'S BIRTHDAYS: Dean
Acheson (1893-1971), diplomat/
statesman; Oleg Cassini (19132006), fashion designer; Joel
Grey (1932- ), actor; Louise
Lasser (1939- ), actress; Thomas
Harris (1940- ), author/screenwriter; Jason Varitek (1972- ),
baseball player; Jennifer
Esposito (1973- ), actress; Mark
Teixeira (1980- ), baseball player; Joss Stone (1987- ), singer.
TODAY'S FACT: Idi Amin
was one of only two native officers in Uganda's military when
the nation gained its independence in 1962.
TODAY'S SPORTS: In 2004,
Phil Mickelson won his first
Masters Tournament after eight
second- or third-place majors
finishes in almost 12 years as a
professional golfer, sinking an
18-foot birdie putt on the final
hole to edge Ernie Els by a single
stroke.
TODAY'S QUOTE: "It is a
mistake to interpret too literally
and sweepingly the poet's admonition that things are not what
they seem. Sometimes they are,
and it is often essential to survival to know when they are and
when they are not."
– Dean Acheson
TODAY'S NUMBER: 35.9
million - estimated population of
Uganda in July 2014.
TODAY'S MOON: Last quarter moon (April 11).
Sense & Sensitivity
DEAR HARRIETTE: I started
an exercise regimen last year and
was doing pretty well, walking
almost 10 miles a day. And then
the winter came. Despite my best
intentions, I slacked off dramatically. I ended up gaining back
almost all the weight I had lost,
and I'm kind of sad about that.
Now that spring is here, I want to
start my regimen again, but I'm
worried it won't work. How can I
get motivated to stay on course?
– Get Fit, Syracuse, NY
DEAR GET FIT: Many people
get into a similar rut. Warm
weather can make it easier for
you to get motivated. Rather than
worrying about what happens
after summer, get moving now. If
walking was once your thing,
start walking again. Build up to
10,000 steps per day, which is
recommended by the American
Heart Association for everyone.
If you are up for it, add other
aerobic activities. You may want
to consider hiring a trainer to
help you get started. If you have
any friends who may want to walk
with you, enlist them. This will
help you to keep up your activity,
even when you don't feel like it.
Once you have established a
rhythm, add an indoor physical
activity so that when the weather
does change, you already have
established an exercise program
that will keep you going.
DEAR HARRIETTE: My husband's family lives far away, and
we get to visit them only once a
year. He has cousins who live
kind of close to my family, a few
states away from us. We used to
By
Harriette Cole
go visit those cousins when we
traveled to see my mom. In
recent years, we haven't been in
touch with them at all. I feel
somewhat responsible for this
because when we go home, I
often just want to hang with my
parents and siblings. Time
doesn't seem to last long enough
to see everybody. My husband
never mentions it, so I just forgot. This year, I remembered
them and thought we should
make an effort to include them
in our next trip. The thing is,
they really don't know my family, so rather than trying to organize a group activity, I think it's
best to do something separate.
How can I organize this without
making it a hassle?
– Engaging Family, Raleigh,
NC
DEAR ENGAGING FAMILY:
Making a conscious effort to
include all of your family members in regular get-togethers is
a wonderful way to stay connected. Rather than bemoaning
what you did not do in the past,
it's great for you to figure out a
way to see your husband's
extended family more regularly
now.
By all means, when you plan
your next trip, set aside a day
that you will spend with these
other relatives. Contact them in
advance and find out if they will
be available, and then see if you
can go visit them. Over time,
you may discover that your two
families will enjoy spending
time together. One step at a
time.
