Absentee Number: 9301 6270 th 12 June 2015 “PRENDIVILLIAN” Definition: A term affectionately used to describe students at Prendiville Catholic College. Over the past two terms I have been meeting regularly with Year 12 students. One of our topics of conversation has been responding to the question “what are the qualities of a Prendivillian?” The student answers have been fantastic. The following are some of the words students describe as being a “Prendivillian”: Strives to do their very best Seeks to excel Accepting of difference Looks out for others Has pride in the College Respects others Embraces opportunity Helpful Faithful We have begun a process of working with staff, parents and students to identify what are the key qualities of being a Prendivillian. What are the characteristics we want our students to aspire to? EXAMINATIONS Exams continue for our senior students. It is an important time for our students. The Year 10 students have sat their first set of written examinations. Some subjects also have practical examinations. Examinations are just one form of assessment that is used at the College. The main benefit of examinations in Year 10 is to encourage students to reflect upon and study their coursework, thereby improving student retention of information. The student’s examination mark will contribute to their Semester One mark and grade. It is important that students work hard to achieve their very best, as the Semester One mark and grade will be used to guide their subject selection process. For your children Mr Mark Antulov Principal YEAR 10 PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT - COURSE SELECTION FOR YEAR 11 2016 One of the most important decisions a student will make whilst at school is what courses to study in Year 11 and 12. A Year 10 Parent Information Night will be held on Monday 15th June 2015. The evening will be held in the Performing Arts Centre and will commence at 7:00pm. Parents will be informed about requirements for Western Australian Certificate of Education, postschool options and course selection procedures for Year 11, 2016. It is very important that parents are present on the night, particularly to offer direction to your child in their subject selection for Year 11. Attendance of your child is not required, as the information will be covered with your child during a Year 10 assembly on Tuesday 16th June 2015. Paul Watson Deputy Principal YEAR 7’S CREATE THE ‘CROSS’ IN CROSS-CURRICULAR EDUCATION Our Principal, Mr Mark Antulov, Director of Mission & Identity, Ms Karen Black, Visual Arts Subject Coordinator, Mr Eamon Matthews and Manual Arts Subject Coordinator, Mr Warrick Palmateer have joined forces to provide a cross-curricular opportunity for Year 7 students. These students have been commissioned to create a unique glass cross for the Prendiville Catholic College Chapel to be opened later this year. As a part of the Year 7 Religious Education programme students study the symbolism of the cross. An exciting innovation this year was to invite every Year 7 student studying Manual Arts to make a small glass cross. Each cross will be fused into a mosaic pattern to create a collaborative work in the shape of a 1.8 x 1.2m large cross. All of the expertise to cut, fuse and slump the glass is being provided by Prendiville Catholic College Art teacher and glass artist, Mrs Lynn Vroombout. This unique glass project will be placed behind the altar in the new chapel. Using the skills learnt, our Year 7 Manual Arts students will also construct a fused glass cross and a small piece of glass jewellery to take home. This is part of an introductory programme and provides a pathway to a new course being offered to Year 8 and 9 students in 2016 that will be run through the newly named Design and Creative Technology Department as ‘Jewellery and 3 Dimensional Design’. Warrick Palmateer Manual Arts Coordinator GLASS AT PRENDIVILLE We're excited to inform the wider College community about the Art Department's new purchase. We have recently taken delivery of a new, state of the art glass kiln. The addition of this piece of technology means that, for the first time in the College's history, students can choose glass as a major studio area or use this medium in combination with traditional ones. Prendiville teacher and resident glass artist Lynn Vroombout (pictured with one of her recent works) is particularly thrilled about the new acquisition. It will provide the opportunity for all members of the College to learn from her expertise and will result in glass art that few other schools would be able to create. This year proved to be one of the more challenging years for the Prendiville team with 20 students succumbing largely to injury and illness in the days leading up to the carnival, meaning we were forced to compete largely undermanned. In order to qualify for the overall aggregate competition schools must have 3 students finish in every race on the program. Thanks largely to our Year 7 and 8 students, we were able to do so with a number of them competing in older age groups to fill unexpected absences on the day. Our final result had us placed 15th out of the 30 schools who qualified for overall aggregate honours and 58 schools overall. Despite this, we were treated to amazing conditions for the entire day. This year’s training program was certainly the hardest I have been involved in and the other coaches and I were looking forward to seeing this pay dividends in the various races throughout the day. There were some outstanding individual performances at the carnival that deserve recognition. Congratulations to both Ben Hillen (Year 8) and Maddison Lea (Year 8) who finished 4th in their respective races. As a result both students achieved All Star status and will receive their badges shortly. Furthermore Ben and the rest of the U14 Boys team finished second in their race, only 1 point behind first place. A reminder to all students that 100K Club will continue for the rest of this term. We have cut back on the tough beach/hill/sprint/ interval sessions and instead are completing more leisurely runs anywhere from 2-8kms depending on your fitness level. Everyone is welcome from the competitive runner to someone who wants to improve their fitness a little bit. It is a great opportunity to gently work out some of the soreness from weekend sporting commitments or to supplement your other training with some fitness work. Interhouse Surfing Carnival Direqt messages have been sent to all students and parents regarding the school’s annual Surfing Carnival on the 20th June. Competency in the water is an obvious prerequisite and not all students are expected to attend. Students must complete the online registration form (PCC Surfing Form) and take their entry fees to the Finance office prior to Tuesday 16th June. Permission slips will be generated from this list and distributed to students to return prior to the carnival. Please read all instructions on the sign up page to ensure correct events are chosen. Sporting Excellence. Tom O'Donnell (Year 9) has been selected in the U15 State Schoolboys Football Team. He will be travelling to Geelong to compete in the National championships later in the year. Prior to their outstanding performances at the ACC X Country, Ben Hillen (Year 8) and Maddison Lea (Year 8) were selected in the WA State Schools Cross Country Team. Furthermore Ryley Gardener (Year 8) was also selected following his strong performance in the U13 Boys race at the Schools Sport WA Cross Country Carnival. All three students have the opportunity to compete at the National Schools Cross Country Championships being held in Melbourne later in the year. Jessica Barnes (Year 10), Alyssa Burgess (Year 7) and Makayla Ince (Year 7), have all been named in the State Schools Swimming Squad. They have the opportunity to compete at the Pacific Games in Adelaide in November. Michael Ross (Year 7), Holly Williams (Year 7), Thomas Hannaire (Year 8) and Emma Hannaire (Year 10) all recently competed at the Australian National Judo Championships in Wollongong, NSW and achieved outstanding results in their respective divisions with Michael winning the gold medal, Holly the silver medal and Thomas bringing home the bronze medal. Congratulations to all four students. Michael Ross receives the gold medal at the Australian National Judo Championships If your son/daughter achieves an outstanding result in a competition outside of school or is named in a representative team please email the details to me ([email protected]) so they can be duly recognised for their achievement. Although there are the usual channels I keep my eyes on throughout the year I am bound to miss some instances across the seemingly endless opportunities available to students. This section of our newsletter is for students and staff to share tips, tricks, ideas and apps to do with technology at Prendiville. This week, we look at screen time. Screen time refers to ‘the total amount of time spent watching TV, DVDs, video, computer games, consoles or using computers or phones for other purposes such as social media.’ (National Australian Children’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey, 2007) Australia’s Physical Activity Recommendations recommend that 5-18 year-olds accumulate no more than 2 hours of screen time a day (excluding educational purposes). Increases in screen time have been positively linked to childhood obesity, consumption of sugar, decreased physical activity and sleep issues in young people. We also know, however, that there is a difference between ‘productive screen time’ and ‘junk screen time.’ For example, most adults use screen time effectively at work – there are tasks that require a computer in order to complete them. Communication, networking, organisation, business and collaboration can all take place in a digital world. When technology helps us get things done in new ways, or more efficiently and effectively, this is good screen time. Junk screen time steals time away from other things and can include: - Having more than one screen open at once (watching TV and being on an iPad, for example) Mindless scrolling through videos on YouTube Constant checks of social media for updates Reading listicles or other unhelpful articles online Having social media accounts open while trying to complete an assignment Symptoms can include headaches, inability to focus, limited time to spend with friends and family and disrupted sleep. How do you use your screen time? Is it productive? Is it time to get outside and away from it for a while? Is limiting to two hours outside of school an unrealistic goal? Read UWA’s findings here. – ‘Impossible screen time requires a rethink’ Reference: Federal Government (2007) National Australian Children’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey.
